Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq on Thursday rubbished allegations of favouring certain Pakistan players and forcing other selectors to toe the line in the T20 World Cup. Both the former Test cricketers, Wahab and Razzaq, were on Wednesday sacked as selectors by the Pakistan Cricket Board. The decision to remove Wahab came as a surprise since he is perceived to be very close to the incumbent PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Wahab had also worked as an advisor on sports with wide ranging powers in the caretaker government in Punjab ran by Naqvi, until the elections were held earlier this year.

Since last year, Wahab has also worked in the PCB in various roles such as the chief selector and senior team manager.

Shortly after Wahab and Razzaq were axed, it was alleged that the former, in capacity of senior team manager, had ignored uncooperative and bad behaviour from pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi in the T20 World Cup.

Wahab and Razzaq were also alleged to have insisted on selecting some players who were not in form or fully fit.

Wahab said in a statement, “To make collaborative decisions as part of the seven-man panel to select the national team was a privilege — everyone’s vote carries equal weight, we made selection decisions as a team and shared the responsibility of that process equally,” said Wahab in a statement.

“I don’t want to be in any blame game. But I don’t agree with claims that I put pressure on other members of the selection committee. How is it possible that one vote prevailed over six others,” said Wahab, adding that everything is documented on record in the ‘minutes of the meeting’.

Razzaq said the selectors took collective decisions which were determined by the majority votes. “So how can I sway the other selectors while selecting the team?” he said.

The PCB had appointed a seven-member selection committee in March without a chief selector in place, soon after Naqvi took over as chairman.

The committee also included former cricketers such as Mohammad Yousuf and Asad Shafiq, Wahab, Razzaq along with the head coach, captain and data analyst Bilal Afzal.

The board’s analyst Hasan Cheema and director of international cricket operations Usman Wahla also attended selection committee meetings.

Following a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz have been sacked from their positions in Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection committee. Razzaq was a part of the men’s and women’s selection committee, while Wahab was a selector of the men’s team. The PCB in a statement confirmed that “they have notified Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz that their services will no longer be required in the national selection committee setup”. The statement from PCB comes after Pakistan’s early departure from the recently concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 where they exited after the Group Stage, including losses against USA and India.

Wahab earlier served as the chief selector before being reinstated as one of the seven members of the men’s selection committee in March this year. The former fast bowler had also travelled with the Pakistan side to the T20 World Cup as senior team manager.

Pakistan have further confirmed the restructuring of the selection committee and will “provide further updates on the composition in due course”.

Over the last four years, the PCB has had six top selectors — Wahab, Mohammad Wasim, Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Haroon Rashid, and Misbah-ul-Haq, all of whom had brief tenures.

The India vs Pakistan rivalry always makes news. Opinions and comments from both sides more often than not are strong and sharp. During the India vs Pakistan ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 the hype hit the roof. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team won the match easily and are on a winning run of six matches. On the other hand, the Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team are in tricky spot with only three wins in seven matches. Their chances of entering the semi-final are slim.

In the midst of this, former Pakistan allrounder Abdul Razzaq was asked a question on an Youtube channel ‘Hasna Mana Hai’ regarding an old comment of his, where he called Jasprit Bumrah, a ‘baby bowler’. Jasprit Bumrah has been the leader of the Indian bowling attack at the Cricket World Cup, with his latest fine show coming against England.

In 2019, in an interview to Cricket Pakistan, Abdul Razzaq had said: “I have played against great bowlers like Glenn Mcgrath and Wasim Akram, so Bumrah is a baby bowler in front of me and I could have easily dominated and attacked him.”

On the TV show, Abdul Razzaq was asked about his comments considering his performance in the World Cup.

“Whatever I said, it was interpreted in the wrong way. The question was how do you see Glenn McGrath, Wasim Akram, Jasprit Bumrah, Shoaib Akhtar. Unke samne, woh baby bowler hai (He is a baby bowler  in front of them) Maine ye kabhi nhi kaha ki Bumrah acha bowler nhi hai. Par jab aap unhe Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath se compare karenge to unhe baby bowler na kahu to aur kya kahu. (I have never said that he is not a good bowler. But if you compare him with Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath, you tell me if I am wrong in calling him baby bowler). Jab main team main aaya tha, main bhi bachcha tha Wasim Akram ke samne (When I came into the Pakistan team, I was also a baby in front of Wasim Akram),” said Razzaq.

While Bumrah has often been compared with Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi, former Pakistan pace great Wasim Akram seems to have completely ended that debate.

“He is the best in the world right now. Top of the ladder! The control, the pace, the variations, just a complete bowler. A treat to watch. With the new ball, to get this kind of movement on this kind of pitch … pace, carry, follow-through… you name it he’s a complete bowler,” Wasim said in a chat on A-Sports.

The cricketing buzz all across the globe is mostly centered around the India vs Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup, with the two giants all set to square-off on September 02. Pakistan and India aren’t just the two favourites to go through from their group but also touted as the two sides who could face each other in the final of the continental event. Speaking of the Indo-Pak clash on Saturday, former Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq feels the team needs to persist with its team, even if it loses the match against India.

Calling Pakistan’s line-up one of the most balanced in the Asia Cup, Razzaq feels skipper Babar Azam and the team management need to back the players fully even if the India match produces an unfavourable result.

“See, the current Pakistan XI is well-balanced. You have proper batters and all-rounders in middle-order. You have full strength in pace and spin attack. You have everything. You should have the same team, this is the best combination. Even if we lose the match against India, you shouldn’t be changing the current team. This is the best team we have,” Razzaq said on GEO Super.

Pakistan have already won one of their matches in the Asia Cup, defeating debutants Nepal in the opener. In the match, while skipper Babar Azam scored 151 runs, middle-order batter Iftikhar Ahmed also registered a century. Wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan produced a fine cameo of 44 runs off 50 balls.

With the ball, Shadab Khan was the superstar for Pakistan, bagging 4 wickets for just 27 runs in 6.4 overs. Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi claimed two wickets each against Nepal.

After setting a target of 343 runs for Nepal to chase, Pakistan managed to bowl them out for just 104 runs, hence securing a monumental 238-run win.
