Waqf Act Amendments will be opposed by the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav said (File).

New Delhi:

Samajwadi Party boss Akhilesh Yadav attacked the BJP Thursday morning over proposed amendments to 44 sections of the Waqf Act of 1995, declaring the Bill a pretext to profit from sale of Waqf-owned lands and that the ruling outfit should rename itself ‘Bharatiya Zameen (land) Party’.

Mr Yadav’s sarcastic swipe came hours before Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tables the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act in the Lok Sabha.

The proposed amendments will change 44 sections of the older legislation, including allowing non-Muslims and Muslim women to be named to central and state Waqf bodies. Among other major proposed changes are omission of Section 40 from the existing law, which allows the Board to classify properties; this means it can, under current rules, declare any of its properties as Waqf.

“All these amendments… are just an excuse. Selling land (owned by) Defence Ministry, Railways, and Nazul land (i.e., land inherited from the colonial British government) is the target. Waqf Board lands are just another link in the chain of ‘schemes for the benefit of BJP’…” Mr Yadav said in Hindi on X.

“Why doesn’t BJP openly write: ‘Issued in interest of BJP’? BJP is working like a real estate company. It should change its name by adding ‘Zameen’ instead of ‘Janta’: Bhartiya Zameen Party.”

Mr Yadav called for a “written guarantee that Waqf Board lands will not be sold”.

Waqf Boards across India own nearly eight lakh acres, making it the largest private land-owning organisation. The Defence Ministry and the Railways have more, but they are government-owned.

The proposal to alter the Waqf Act has been heavily criticised by the opposition and some members of the Muslim community, and fiery protests are likely when the amendments are tabled later today.

Earlier today, Congress MPs KC Venugopal and Hibi Eden filed notices to oppose introduction of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha. Akhilesh Yadav’s party will also oppose the Bill.

NDTV Explains | Non-Muslims On Boards, Council Can’t Claim Land: Waqf Changes

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has given notice to oppose the amendments, claiming it is against rights guaranteed under the Constitution, including freedom to practice religion. “The amendments are discriminatory and arbitrary, and are a grave attack on the basic structure of the Constitution as it violates principle of judicial independence and separation of powers,” Mr Owaisi said.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board said changes “will not be tolerated”. Spokesman SQR Ilyas said the government wants to change the status of Waqf properties so “possession is easier”. Also, the Tamil Nadu Board chief told NDTV called it a ploy to “weaken” and “destabilise” such organisations.

The government, however, has dismissed such claims.

Sources told NDTV the idea is to empower Muslim women and children who “suffered” under the old law. The objective, sources declared, is also to curb illegal occupancy of by Waqf boards.

Sources also claimed a “dangerous narrative” is being manufactured by certain Muslim clerics who are making wild statements that their land will be snatched

The government, meanwhile, also wants the passage of the bill to be “inclusive” exercise, and is willing to send the amendments to a joint committee for further study, sources said.

The 1995 Wakf Act was passed to regulate ‘auqaf‘ (assets donated and notified as Waqf) by a ‘wakif’ (the person who dedicates the property). The legislation was last amended in 2013.

Akhilesh Yadav and Anurag Thakur were locked in a heated exchange in Lok Sabha today

New Delhi:

The debate on Budget 2024 in Lok Sabha today saw an explosive exchange between Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and BJP MP Anurag Thakur over the Agnipath scheme.

Mr Yadav, MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj, said this is a “budget of despair” but people in the government are praising it. He said there was nothing in the budget for the unemployed, youngsters and villages. “Those with family know how difficult it is to run the household, provide education to children and take care of the treatment of the elderly,” Mr Yadav said.

Shifting focus to Uttar Pradesh, the former Chief Minister said, “You showed the Make in India dream, but Uttar Pradesh did not get any big project even though we got a Prime Minister. Did we get an IIM or an IIT? Which central institution was set up? The Samajwadi Party government gave land for two AIIMS in Raebareli and Gorakhpur, but are people getting adequate treatment there?”

Taking a swipe at the BJP for its lack-lustre show in Uttar Pradesh in this general election, he said, “Results in UP showed how much you worked, would results be like this if you did everything right?”

He then quoted shayari by Wasim Barelvi. “Woh jhoot bol raha tha bade salike se, main aitbaar na karta toh kya karta? (He lied with such finesse, I had no option but to believe)” he said, to cheers from the Opposition benches.

Referring to the train derailment in Jharkhand, Mr Yadav said, “Ever since the government has taken over, there is a competition between rail accidents and paper leaks.”

The Samajwadi Party chief questioned if the ruling party has fulfilled its promise of doubling farmers’ income. “You say you are giving MSP (Minimum Support Price), then why are you denying a legal guarantee.”

Moving to the Agnipath scheme for short-term recruitment in the armed forces, Mr Yadav said, “No youngster preparing to join the forces can accept it. When this scheme came, prominent industrialists were asked to tweet that there is no better job and they will rehire them (Agniveers) once their four-year stint ended.”

“But the government knows it is not a good scheme, that’s why it is asking BJP-led state governments to give job quota to Agniveers,” he added.

When BJP MP and former Union minister Anurag Thakur opposed his remarks, Mr Yadav dared him to say that Agnipath is a good scheme and sat down.

“I come from Himachal Pradesh, which gave the country its first Param Vir Chakra awardee, the late Major Somnath Sharma. Most martyrs in Kargil were from Himachal. It is the Narendra Modi government that fulfilled the long-pending demand of One Rank One Pension. I am saying this, Agniveer has 100 per cent employment guarantee,” Mr Thakur responded.

Mr Yadav then asked, “Then what is the need for state governments giving quota (for Agniveers). I went to a military school, we can also count Param Vir Chakras.”

The former Union Minister stood up again and said, “He has just gone to a military school, I am serving as Territorial Army captain. Akhilesh ji, don’t give gyan.”

Hitting back, Mr Yadav took a swipe at Mr Thakur not getting a ministerial berth this time. “Maybe he is agitated because he is no longer a minister. I read pain on your face,” he said.

Before he ended his address, Mr Yadav took a parting shot at the Narendra Modi government. “This government is not one that would run, it is a government that will topple.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on July 23 described the Union Budget, as having unlimited development potential. He said it will fulfil the aspirations of 140 crore Indians and help achieve Amritkaal.

“Under the guidance of the respected prime minister, the all-encompassing, all-inclusive, and development-oriented General Budget 2024–25 presented by the Union Finance Minister is going to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of 140 crore Indians and all the resolutions of Amritkaal,” said Mr. Adityanath.

“The budget will aid the overall development of different sections of society, including people in villages, the poor, farmers, women, and youth. It is a vision to become self-reliant in every field and a roadmap to free the deprived from deprivation,” the U.P. CM wrote in a post on X.

“The budget will promote the development of villages, the poor, farmers, women, and youth. It has a vision of self-reliance in every field and provides a roadmap to end deprivation,” the U.P. CM wrote in a post on X.

Youth ignored

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav criticised the Union Budget, alleging it ignored the interests of the youth and farmers, adding Uttar Pradesh was totally sidelined in the Union Budget. ‘It is good that Bihar and Andhra Pradesh have been linked to special schemes, but is there anything in the budget for the farmers of Uttar Pradesh? Looking at Uttar Pradesh, what is the investment situation? Ongoing projects are never completed on time. The youth and farmers have been completely ignored,” he alleged.

Farmers completely ignored: Akhilesh Yadav

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati claimed that the budget lacks reformist measures for the upliftment of underprivileged sections. “Today’s Union Budget follows the same old pattern, where except for a handful of wealthy people, it offers little hope of better days to the nation’s poor, farmers, unemployed, women, labourers, the marginalised and neglected communities and is full of disappointment for them,” Ms. Mayawati wrote, on X.

Nagina MP and Azad Samaj Party (ASP) leader Chandra Shekhar Aazad said that marginalised sections, including Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), have been ignored. “Today’s budget is going to please the industrialists and disappoint the country’s labourers, farmers, youth, unemployed, women, and Bahujans. The budget has not lived up to the expectations that the people of the country had of it, and they feel cheated. In this budget, no separate provision has been made for the economic development of the poor, the deprived, SC, ST, OBC, and the minority community,” said the Nagina MP.

Akhilesh Yadav has said BJP is reeling due to infighting and public issues in UP are being ignored

Lucknow:

Amid the buzz over a social media post by Uttar Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, main Opposition Samajwadi Party’s leader Akhilesh Yadav today said the people of Uttar Pradesh are fed up with infighting within the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government. In a sharp response, Mr Maurya stressed that the BJP has strong governments and organisation at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh and the Samajwadi Party has no chance of a comeback.

This comes against the backdrop of a remark by the Deputy Chief Minister that triggered speculation that all is not well within the Uttar Pradesh government. The BJP, however, has trashed this buzz. “The organisation is bigger than the government. No one is bigger than the organisation,” Mr Maurya said at a meeting of the state BJP working committee on Sunday. The remark, which following Mr Maurya’s meeting with BJP president JP Nadda, was widely seen as a veiled swipe at Mr Adityanath.

“There is infighting in the government. BJP leaders are fighting among themselves. The people know about the corruption and are fed up with the game of thrones,” Mr Yadav said at a party event.

The Samajwadi Party chief had earlier said that the administration had been put on the back burner as the state’s BJP leaders compete with each other. “The BJP, which engineered splits in other parties, is now doing the same within. This is why it is sinking in the quicksand of infighting. There is no one in the BJP to think for the people,” he had said in a post on X.

On the buzz surrounding Mr Maurya’s remark, Akhilesh Yadav said the BJP “wants to stand with those who lost”. Mr Maurya, a former UP BJP chief, lost the 2022 Assembly election but was retained as Deputy Chief Minister. He is now a member of the legislative council.

Responding to the Samajwadi Party chief, Mr Maurya tweeted this afternoon that the BJP’s governments and organisation in the country and the state are strong. “The return of SP’s reign of goons in UP is impossible. BJP will repeat 2017 in the 2027 state polls,” he posted on X. Significantly, Mr Maurya was state BJP chief in 2017 and the BJP had scored a thumping win in that election.

Speaking at the BJP state leaders’ meet, Mr Adityanath had said “overconfidence” cost the BJP dearly in the recently-held Lok Sabha election. The results of Uttar Pradesh came as a rude shock to the BJP in this general election, its score dropping from 62 in 2019 to 33 this time. The Samajwadi Party made huge gains to bag 37 seats.

“The percentage of votes that was in favour of BJP in 2014 and subsequent elections, BJP has been successful in getting the same number of votes in 2024 as well, but the shifting of votes and overconfidence have hurt our expectations,” Mr Adityanath said, calling upon party workers to step up preparations for the upcoming bypolls in 10 Assembly seats.

Mr Yadav said he was confident of a good show by the Samajwadi Party in the bypolls, the date of which has not been announced yet.

On the upcoming state budget, Mr Yadav said, “The Centre says we are the fifth-largest economy globally. And UP talks about a 1 trillion dollar economy. The state government should tell us how much the Centre has helped in this case. The government in Delhi must put out the per capita income, if we become the third-largest economy, will we be able to match per capital income in developed countries?”

The Congress, meanwhile, has drawn a Kalyan Singh parallel. “I have an experience of 44 years in UP… The same thing is happening now when Kalyan Singh was removed by the BJP and only time will tell if there is another Kalyan Singh or if Kalyan Singh can overpower. We will have to wait and see why all this is happening. But one thing is sure: the honest BJP workers are really sad inside,” Congress leader Pramod Tiwari has said, according to news agency ANI.

The BJP has downplayed the issue. Union Minister BL Verma said there is no infighting in Uttar Pradesh. “The government and the organisation are doing their work. The organisation and the government compliment each other,” he said.

Faizabad MP Awadhesh Prasad sat next to Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav

New Delhi:

A ‘shayari’ used by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav to take a swipe at Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh Assembly resurfaced in Lok Sabha today.

Mr Yadav, now MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj, was speaking during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to President’s address. Thanking the people of Uttar Pradesh for the Lok Sabha poll results, in which his party put up a stellar show, Mr Yadav focused on the Faizabad seat.

Ayodhya, which was a big talking point in this election since the grand Ram Temple was built, is part of the Faizabad seat. Samajwadi Party’s Awadhesh Prasad won the seat by a margin of over 50,000 votes.

Earlier this year, during the budget session of Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Mr Yadav had said that Mr Adityanath oversaw all arrangements for the Ram Temple inauguration, but did not find a place on the red carpet as the whole focus was on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He had then recited a shayari that meant that the person who organised the event got no attention. “Huzoor e ala khamosh baithe isi gham mein, mehfil lut le gaya koi jab sajai thi humne,” he had said.

Mr Yadav had also said that the Chief Minister was seen making preparations in the run-up to the temple’s opening, but was “out of focus” on the big day. In the videos of the speech that went viral, Mr Adityanath was seen smiling sportingly.

The Kannauj MP revived the shayari today to take a swipe at the BJP for losing the Faizabad seat despite showcasing the Ram Temple in its poll campaign.

“Some things transcend time, so I am reminded of a ‘sher’ read in the UP Assembly. It was apt then, now more so,” Mr Yadav said before repeating the shayari.

As the ‘shayari’ landed, Mr Yadav patted the shoulder of his party colleague and the Faizabad MP. And Awadesh Prasad replied, “Yogi ji ke liye (for Yogi ji).”

The ‘shayari’ drew loud cheers from the Opposition benches as Mr Yadav went on to say that the poll result in Faizabad reflected the “political understanding of the mature Indian voter”.

“We have heard, what Lord Ram wills, happens. This is his decision. Those who claimed they have brought someone now depend on others’ support,” he said. This was an ostensible reference to the ‘jo ram ko layein hain, hum unko layenge’ slogan that was used during the run-up to the election as the BJP claimed credit for building the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

The Samajwadi Party chief also targeted the Narendra Modi government on paper leaks and alleged that the government is behind these leaks because it doesn’t want to give jobs.

Akhilesh Yadav was speaking after NDA’s Om Birla was re-elected as the Lok Sabha speaker

New Delhi:

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said that he hoped that actions like suspension of MPs would not be taken in the 18th Lok Sabha. Speaking shortly after NDA’s Om Birla was re-elected as the Lok Sabha speaker, Mr Yadav said he believed that the BJP MP would be impartial towards the opposition and give its leaders equal opportunity.

“I congratulate you and extend you best wishes on behalf of all my colleagues. The post that you are occupying has glorious traditions attached to it. We believe that this will continue without any discrimination and as Lok Sabha Speaker you will give equal opportunities and respect to every member and party,” he said.

“Impartiality is a great responsibility of this great position… We expect that no public representative’s voice will be stifled, nor will an action like expulsion take place again,” he said.

Mr Yadav was apparently referring to the unprecedented suspension of more than 100 MPs during the Winter Session of Parliament last year.

“Your control is on the Opposition but it should be on the ruling side too. The House should function on your signals and not the other way round,” he said.

“I hope that you would respect the Opposition as much as you respect the ruling dispensation and let them present their side,” Mr Yadav said.

Rahul Gandhi’s Similar Appeal To Lok Sabha Speaker

Speaking before Akhilesh Yadav, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also made a similar appeal to Om Birla and said that “it is very important that the voice of the Opposition is allowed to be represented in this House”.

“I am confident that you will allow us to speak. The question is not how efficiently the House is run. The question is how much of India’s voice is being allowed to be heard. So the idea that you can run the House efficiently by silencing the voice of the Opposition is a non-democratic idea. And this election has shown that the people of India expect the Opposition to defend the Constitution,” Mr Gandhi said.

“We are confident that by allowing the Opposition to speak, you will do your duty of defending the Constitution,” Mr Gandhi, who is also named as the leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, said.

Opposition leaders have renewed their attack on Centre over EVMs after Elon Musk’s tweet

New Delhi:

More than a week after the Lok Sabha election results, the debate over Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) and whether they can be hacked is back under the spotlight, thanks to ‘X’ Boss Elon Musk.

A remark by the Tesla CEO on EVMs prompted a sharp response from BJP leader and former technology minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar. And now, Opposition leaders are sharing Mr Musk’s tweet to emphasise their concerns over EVMs.

Musk’s post, in which he flagged the risk of EVMs being hacked, also comes amid reports that a relative of Ravindra Waikar, Shiv Sena MP from Mumbai North West, was using a phone that could be connected to an EVM. The reports have fuelled the EVM debate, with Opposition leaders questioning the Election Commission’s “silence”.

Elon Musk’s tweet on EVMs was in reply to a post by Robert F Kennedy Jr, nephew of former US President John F Kennedy and independent hopeful for the next US Elections, on polling in poll irregularities in Puerto Rico. “We should eliminate electronic voting machines. The risk of being hacked by humans or AI, while small, is still too high,” Musk posted.

In response, former Union minister Chandrasekhar said Musk’s remark is a “huge sweeping generalization statement that implies no one can build secure digital hardware”.

“@elonmusk’s view may apply to US n other places – where they use regular compute platforms to build Internet connected Voting machines. But Indian EVMs are custom designed, secure and isolated from any network or media – No connectivity, no bluetooth, wifi, Internet. ie there is no way in. Factory programmed controllers that cannot be reprogrammed. Electronic voting machines can be architected and built right as India has done. We wud be happy to run a tutorial Elon,” he said.

This drew a short response from Musk, as he doubled down on his point. “Anything can be hacked,” he said. Mr Chandrasekhar argued that while “anything is possible”, EVMs continue to be a reliable voting method as compared to paper ballots.

Jumping into the debate, Opposition leaders shared Elon Musk’s remarks to stress their oft-repeated concerns about the EVM method.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said EVMs in Indian “are a ‘black box’ and nobody is allowed to scrutinize them”.

“Serious concerns are being raised about transparency in our electoral process. Democracy ends up becoming a sham and prone to fraud when institutions lack accountability,” he said, while sharing Musk’s post and a news report on Ravindra Waikar’s election.

Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party chief and a Congress ally, shared Musk’s post. “Technology is to remove problems, if they become a cause of problems, their use must be stopped. When risks of EVM tampering are being flagged in several elections across the world and well-known technology experts are flagging risks, the BJP must clear the air on why they are bent on using EVMs,” he said, demanding that upcoming polls be used by ballot paper method.

Rajya Sabha MP and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi flagged the reports on Mumbai election. “This is a fraud at the highest level and yet the @ECISVEEP continues to sleep,” she said in a post on X.

The INDIA Opposition bloc, too, shared Elon Musk’s remarks from its official handle.

The Election Commission maintains that the EVMs constitute a viable voting method and robust technical and administrative safeguards are in place for their use.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar recently took a swipe at those questioning EVMs. Addressing the media after the Lok Sabha poll results, he said, “The results of EVM are in front of everyone. Why to accuse that poor fellow? Let it rest for a few days. Let EVM rest till the next election. Then it will come out, then its battery will be changed, then its papers will be changed. Then it will get abused again, but will deliver good results. It has been showing similar results since the last 20-22 elections, the government keeps changing,” he said.

Akhilesh Yadav’s SP is allied with the Congress-led INDIA bloc for this election.

New Delhi:

There was a stampede-like situation at an election rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh Tuesday that was headlined by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. The chaos erupted after the former UP Chief Minister arrived at the event, with over-eager party workers and supporters jostling with each other, and climbing over wooden barriers, to see Mr Yadav.

As the jostling and shoving escalated, not helped at points by unruly sections, the meeting devolved into bedlam. This was the third time a rally led by Mr Yadav has ended in disorder.

Visuals from the scene today showed carnage at a fair ground in the town of Saraymeer, with broken chairs and torn streamers littering the ground, prompting the police to step in and try and control the situation. The cops had to resort to a lathi charge to do so.

During the chaos Mr Yadav and others, including leaders from the INDIA opposition bloc, remained on stage and appealed, in vain, for the supporters and workers to calm down. The appeals, unfortunately, had no effect. Eventually, though, police restored a measure of order and Mr Yadav addressed the crowd.

The public rally was being held for the SP candidate in the Lalganj Lok Sabha seat, which Mr Yadav’s party is trying to win for the first time since Daroga Prasad’s 2004 success.

In 2019 the seat was won by Sangeeta Azad from Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party.

In this election Daroga Prasad has been fielded (as the joint INDIA bloc candidate) by the Samajwadi Party against the BJP’s Neelam Sonkar and the BSP’s Indu Chaudhry.

The Lalganj seat will vote in the sixth phase – on May 25.

This is not the first time chaos has visited one of Mr Yadav’s rallies in this election.

Earlier this week a rally in Prayagraj’s Phulpur had to be cancelled, leaving Mr Yadav and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who was also on stage, free for an impromptu on-stage chat.

Mr Yadav and Mr Gandhi had to abandon plans for another joint election meeting, each without delivering their speeches. Sources said supporters broke through barricades trying to reach the dais at the rally.

UP is a key battleground as the BJP bids for a third consecutive term in power. The state – dominated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party in the last two general elections and intervening state polls – sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha, by far the most of any state.

According to the seat-sharing agreement between the two parties, the Samajwadi Party is contesting 63 seats while the Congress is contesting 17.

The state has voted in every phase so far and will vote in the sixth and seventh phases too.

The results will be out on June 4.

Congress’ Rahul Gandhi with Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav during a joint election rally.

Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh):

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav engaged in a free-wheeling conversation on stage at Prayagraj’s Phulpur as their public meeting got cancelled owing to a stampede-like situation at the public rally.

The Samajwadi Party chief has often claimed that the INDIA bloc will be winning 79 out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh and will be facing a cut-throat contest at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi which he referred to as ‘Kyoto’.

“The Prime MP (PM Modi) had promised the people of Kashi that ‘Kyoto’ will be the world’s best city. Whether it became a reality or not will be determined by the people of Kashi in the elections.”

Akhilesh’s reference to Kyoto is a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had promised that his government would be developing Varanasi in the style of Japan’s Kyoto city.

Taking a veiled dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “This time Mann ki Baat won’t work. They have to listen to us, 140 crore people and that of the Constitution.”

Speaking about unemployment, Rahul Gandhi said, “PM Modi has made Uttar Pradesh the centre of unemployment.”

Pointing at the jeering crowd, Akhilesh Yadav said, “These are those youths who did not get jobs owing to Agniveer or paper leak. The false promises given by the BJP of Investment Meets, Defence Expo or those dreams sold at the G20 Summit are visible.”

Speaking about his father Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party chief said, “He was very attached to the ground. I have learnt several things from Netaji starting from his hard work, his determination to stay focussed on his goal and his fight for equality started by Ram Manohar Lohia.”

Pointing out the strength of their alliance, Rahul Gandhi said, “The INDIA alliance that has been formed this time has never been seen. All the parties are together in the fight.”

On the alliance between the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, Mr Yadav said, “This is a natural alliance and people can see that. The youth can connect with us because we are highlighting issues like employment.”

In an attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr Yadav said, “The BJP acts on its own will.”

To this Rahul Gandhi added, “They think that there is no need for discussion because they know everything.”

Highlighting the importance of holding discussions, Mr Yadav said, “The more there are discussions, the more we listen to others and trust others, the stronger will be our democracy. The BJP has not only endangered our lives but is also posing a threat to our democracy and our Constitution.”

Speaking about the alleged threat from neighbouring China, Mr Yadav said, “Our borders with China at Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh are very insecure. On top of that China also posed a threat to our markets. So we need to give a boost to our manufacturing sector.”

On ensuing reservations to all castes in every sector of the society, Mr Yadav said, “Social justice, caste census is important for the country. America and European countries undertake several welfare measures for those who are left behind. This will play a major role in our country to uplift those people who are left behind based on caste.”

Uttar Pradesh which contributes the maximum number of seats to the Lok Sabha elections is voting in all seven phases. According to the seat-sharing agreement between the two parties, the Samajwadi Party is contesting 63 seats while the Congress is contesting 17.
