Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar lauded all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for taking India from “despair to domination” with their counter-attacking partnership during the first Test against Bangladesh. Ashwin and Jadeja’s rearguard performances salvaged India in the first innings of the first Test against Bangladesh, with both allrounders unbeaten at the end of the first day’s play at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here. At stumps on day one, Team India were at 339/6, with Ashwin (102*) and Jadeja (86*) looking strong after an unbeaten 195-run partnership.

Tendulkar took to X and wrote, “From despair to domination! @ashwinravi99 and @imjadeja’s knocks have turned the tide for India once again. This all-round brilliance is invaluable. Super partnership boys. #INDvBAN.”

“@ashwinravi99’s century paired with @imjadeja’s inning turned the tide for India. Their determination and partnership were vital after that shaky start,” wrote Anil Kumble.

“Serious cricketers .. @ashwinravi99 & @imjadeja .. How often at home in India do they produce magic with the Bat .. !! They will no doubt follow with the Ball as well … #INDvBAN,” wrote Vaughan.

Coming to the match, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bowl first. The top-order collapsed and India was left at 34/3. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (56 in 118 balls, with nine fours) and Rishabh Pant (39 in 52 balls, with six fours) stitched a 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket, bringing India into the game. After India was reduced to 144/6, Ashwin and Jadeja (86* in 117 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes) stitched a 195-run partnership, ending the day at 339/6.

Hasan Mahmud (4/58) was the top bowler for Bangladesh, destroying the Indian top order, removing skipper Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0) and Virat Kohli (6).

Teams:

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Shadman Islam, Zakir Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto(c), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das(w), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Nahid Rana

India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant (w), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj.

Hinting at the possibility of taking a coaching role for Team India in future, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh said that he would love to give back to the sport which gave him such an illustrious career if given a chance and added that coaching Men in Blue is all about team management. Harbhajan’s statement comes a week after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) invited the applications for position of men’s national team head coach, with the tenure starting from July 1 this year and concluding on December 31, 2027, which will the year when the next 50-over Cricket World Cup will take place. Speaking to ANI about coaching Indian team, Harbhajan said, “I do not know if I would apply. Coaching India is about man management, not about teaching players how to drive and pull. They know it very well. You can give some guidance to them. Cricket has given me so much and If I get a chance to give it back, I would be more than happy.”

After India could not lift the ICC Cricket World Cup at home last year in November after reaching finals, the current head coach Rahul Dravid was given an extension till June, which also marks the month during which the ICC T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA will take place from June 1 to 29.

The deadline for application will be till May 27, 6 PM.

“The BCCI on Monday invited applications for the position of Head Coach of the Senior Men’s Team. Applications for the position should be submitted by 6PM IST on May 27, 2024,” said a statement from BCCI.

The selection process will include a thorough review of applications, followed by personal interviews and assessments of shortlisted candidates.

BCCI has put out the qualifications for a potential head coach as:

“Should have played a minimum of 30 Test Matches or 50 ODI’s or head coach of a full member Test playing nation, for a minimum period of 2 years; or the head coach of an Associate member/Indian Premier League (IPL) Team or equivalent international league/first class teams/national A teams, for a minimum period of 3 years; or Should have BCCI Level 3 Certification or equivalent; and should be below 60 years of age.”

India are placed in Group A of the T20 WC this year alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and co-hosts USA.

India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, followed by the marquee clash against Pakistan on June 9 at the same venue.

India will then play the USA and Canada on June 12 and 15 respectively.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj

Reserves: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan.

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh recently questioned the scheduling of the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), considering that the T20 World Cup kicks off a week later after the final of the cash-rich league. Harbhajan suggested that the BCCI got scheduling all wrong and also stressed the need for playing at least 4-5 practice games before India’s opening game of the campaign against Ireland in New York on June 5. However, former India captain Anil Kumble had a different view on the matter.

“Yes, I believe it would have been better for them to have 4-5 games, you know collectively playing against some top team like England or Australia in America, just to get used to those conditions. But that doesn’t seem to be happening. But now, whatever small window we have, those two games, we have to make the best use of it. Going forward, it is a great suggestion. When you are playing a tournament like the World Cup or WTC, the team should play together for 10-15 days, it will be better,” Harbhajan had said during a discussion on Star Sports.

The legendary leg-spinner feels there’s no better way to prepare for the T20 World Cup than grinding it out in IPL.

“With regard to the Indian players, people who are not part of the playoffs will certainly be going early, and the guys who will be playing or who will be part of the playoffs will leave immediately after the IPL. So I don’t see any reason why the preparation should be different. I don’t think there’s any issue with that,” Kumble said in a different discussion on Jio Cinema.

Kumble suggested that playing 16-17 IPL games is more than enough to prepare for the T20 World Cup, and also pointed out that some of the Indian players will leave before the IPL final, especially with their teams out of IPL playoffs race.

“You can’t get a better sort of preparation for the World Cup than playing in an IPL where you played either 14 matches or 16 or 17. So, in that sense, you’ve prepared really well in this tournament in terms of any situation and under pressure you played. So it’s a good sort of understanding of where your game is and going into the World Cup,” he added.

If the game of cricket remains tilted heavily in the favour of batters, not many youngsters would be lining up to start bowling in a couple of years, fears spin great Anil Kumble, who advocated the need to keep biggest possible boundaries at IPL venues and use of more pronounced seam to restore the balance between bat and ball.

The score of 250 has been breached as many as eight times this season with shorter boundaries, flat pitches and impact player rule aiding the batting side.

Like the great Sunil Gavaskar, Kumble also feels that keeping the maximum possible boundaries length is need of the hour.

“It’s been really hard on the bowlers, especially the first half of the tournament. I certainly believe that you need to maximize the boundaries at every venue. Try and keep the biggest boundary possible in that venue,” India’s leading wicket taker across formats told select media in an interaction arranged by JioCinema.

“For a start, you could move the dugout into the stands. I know you’ll lose a few seats but so be it. Then the other aspect is to perhaps look at white ball to have slightly more pronounced seam so that there’s a bit more movement.

“We have seen that the ball stops swinging after maybe just the one over or even less than that sometimes. You need a balance between bat and ball. You can’t be running in and just going through the motions where in a couple of years you won’t have too many youngsters lining up to start bowling.

“Everybody wants to be a batter. You need the bowlers also to be a part of this game and the balance is very important. I expect that will also get addressed,” he said.

As per the playing conditions of the IPL, “The playing area shall be a minimum of 150 yards (137.16 metres) from boundary to boundary square of the pitch, with the shorter of the two square boundaries being a minimum 65 yards (59.43m).

“The straight boundary at both ends of the pitch shall be a minimum of 70 yards (64.00 metres). Distances shall be measured from the centre of the pitch to be used. In all cases the aim shall be to provide the largest playing area, subject to no boundary exceeding 85 yards (77.71 metres) from the centre of the pitch to be used.”

Decision to replace Rohit as MI captain was sudden

The call to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya has not worked for Mumbai Indians. Kumble feels that transition could have been completed next season when the mega auctions are due.

“The change that happened was a bit sudden. Obviously Rohit Sharma was a part of Mumbai Indians for the last 10 years and then led the team for five titles. Maybe in hindsight, maybe he could have sort of looked at Rohit to manage this year and then maybe Hardik coming in next year but the leadership obviously took that decision. But having said that, I don’t think they played good cricket,” said Kumble.

Hardik’s former team Gujarat Titans also could not make the play-offs but Kumble praised his successor Shubman Gill for his leadership in first year as captain.

“You can’t really judge (in one season), I thought he was pretty aggressive in his approach when it came to captaincy. He was always looking to take wickets and again for GT unfortunately a couple of injuries didn’t help. Shami was a big miss,” said the former India captain.

Kuldeep will be India’s number one spinner in T20 World Cup

India have picked four spinners in the T20 World Cup squad with Yuzvendra Chahal making a comeback to be the second wrist spin option alongside Kuldeep Yadav. All-rounder Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja also provide spin options.

“I don’t know who will be starting in the first game against Ireland. Kuldeep for sure. I don’t know what the pitch conditions are. I don’t think any Indian team has played in the US other than in Fort Lauderdale. So it all depends on the pitch conditions.

“I guess Kuldeep probably will be the number one spinner in that sense because he’s your wrist spinner. I’m sure there’ll be one wrist spinner who will play,” said Kumble who expects spinners to play a major role in the tournament.

New Delhi :

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah have condoled the demise of legendary India spinner Bishan Singh Bedi and said he defined an era of cricket and his artistry on the field will always be remembered. Regarded as one of the greatest left-arm spinners in world cricket, Bedi passed away on Monday at the age of 77 years old, leaving a great legacy behind. The Amritsar-born spinner, who played domestically for Delhi, finished his career with 1,560 wickets in first-class cricket –more than any other Indian.

Union Sports Minister said that Bishan Singh Bedi’s demise is a huge loss to the cricket world.

“Former captain of the Indian cricket team, Bishan Singh Bedi is no more with us. It is a very sad news. We stand with his family. When I used to play for Punjab, he was the coach of our Ranji Trophy team. It is a big loss to the cricket world,” Anurag Thakur told ANI.

In a post on ‘X’ earlier, the union minister said the legendary spinner’s contributions to Indian cricket and his artistry on the field will always be remembered.

“Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of legendary India spinner Bishan Singh Bedi. His contributions to Indian cricket and his artistry on the field will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire cricketing community. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.

Jay Shah took to X and condoled the demise of the legendary spinner.

“Sad to hear the demise of Shri Bishan Singh Bedi. Indian Cricket has lost an icon today. Bedi Sir defined an era of cricket and he left an indelible mark on the game with his artistry as a spin bowler and his impeccable character. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

BCCI also conveyed its condolences.

“The BCCI mourns the sad demise of former India Test Captain and legendary spinner, Bishan Singh Bedi. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and fans in these tough times. May his soul rest in peace.”

The legendary spinner had an illustrious domestic cricket career, especially with the Delhi team, in addition to his international career. He was a mentor to several spinners and made substantial contributions to the development of young talent in India. Bedi’s impact on the sport extended beyond the ground, as he became a respected commentator and an advocate for sportsmanship and fair play.

He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1970. Bedi also represented Northamptonshire in English county cricket for many years.

Former Indian cricket team captain and coach spinner Anil Kumble lauded Ravindra Jadeja for his ball that dismissed Steve Smith in the teams’ Cricket World Cup opener on Sunday, saying that the spinner changed his angles well. Ravindra Jadeja’s spell of 3/28 was one of the standout performances during India’s win over Australia in their Cricket World Cup campaign opener in Chennai on Sunday. He also took the prized wicket of Steve Smith and registered the best figures by an Indian spinner against Australia in a Cricket World Cup match.

The ball delivered by Jadeja landed in the middle but took a turn to beat Smith’s bat and knock the off stump.

Kumble said batters should show intent against Jadeja. “If you do not show any intent against Jadeja, it becomes very tough for a batter. Six out of six times, he will land the ball on that point. On a surface like this, all he did was change the angles. He went close to the stumps, bowled to the right-hander and then went round, slightly wide, threw that angle in, that is what got Smith out. He was thinking that it would come straight but because of the angle, it beat his outside edge. Brilliant bowling,” Kumble said in a video by ESPNCricinfo.

India registered a six-wicket win against Australia in their opening match of the World Cup due to tight bowling and efforts of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

The Indian men’s cricket team arrived in Delhi on Monday ahead of their second World Cup clash against Afghanistan.

India opened their campaign with a 6-wicket victory against Australia on Sunday. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli came to the rescue after India stumbled thrice in the first 10 overs. Their partnership laid the foundation for success while chasing a target of 200.

India’s rising youngster Shubman Gill will once again miss the game as he continues to suffer from illness.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier on Monday confirmed that Gill will stay in Chennai and will not travel with the squad for the Men in Blue’s next World Cup clash against Afghanistan.

“Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team,” BCCI said in a statement.

In Shubman Gill’s absence, India is likely to stick with the same playing XI that they named in the World Cup campaign opener against Australia.

Ishan Kishan will be the most viable option to open alongside skipper Rohit Sharma. India will face Afghanistan on Wednesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav.

Former Indian spinner Anil Kumble lauded batter KL Rahul for his match-winning performance against Australia in the ICC Cricket World Cup opener at Chennai on Sunday, saying that he is back to his original self and the experience and deep batting he brings to the middle-order augurs well for the Men in Blue. A calm partnership between Virat Kohli and KL Rahul helped India secure a six-wicket victory over Australia at Chennai’s Chepauk stadium to kickstart their ICC Cricket World Cup campaign.

“It looks like KL Rahul is back to his original self like we have all seen and we all know what he can do on the field. His skill and class on any surface, ability to play spin and pace is great. His consistency is impressive,” said Kumble in a video by ESPNCricinfo.

Kumble said that he has understood his role as a middle-order batter really well and is exceptional against spin.

“Yeah, I think he has understood his role really well. He has an exceptional ability to play spin. That is something you need as a middle-order batter. The other part of KL Rahul, VK and other batters is their ability to hit good deliveries. In 50-overs, it is not only about hitting fours and sixes, it is about soaking pressure on a good deck and playing slightly longer, to the situation. It is something KL has done well. It solves a lot of problems for the team. The experience he brings in that situation and being there till the end really augurs well for India,” said Kumble.

In 14 ODIs this year, KL has scored 628 runs at an average of 78.50 and a strike rate of over 86. He has scored a century and five fifties in 13 innings, with the best score of 111*.

KL has clearly taken a liking to the middle-order role. In 11 ODIs at number four spot, he has 481 runs at an average of 60.12 and a strike rate of above 88. He has two tons and two fifties here, with the best of 111*. The number five seems to be perfect for him. In 21 ODIs at this position, he has 904 runs at an average of 56.50 and a strike rate of above 96. He has a century and eight fifties in 21 innings, with the best score of 112.

He has batted in the middle-order this year. Overall at these above positions in 32 ODIs, he has 1,385 runs at an average of 57.70. He has scored three tons and 10 fifties in the middle order, with the best score of 112.

Coming to the WC match between India and Australia, Australia lost Mitchell Marsh for a duck, but opener David Warner (41 in 52 balls with six fours) and Steve Smith (46 in 71 balls with five fours) helped the Aussies recover with their 69-run second-wicket partnership. Marnus Labuschagne (27) tried to take the Aussie innings forward with Smith, but following Smith’s dismissal, Australia faced a collapse.

The spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja (3/28), Kuldeep Yadav (2/42) and Ravichandran Ashwin (1/34) wreaked havoc on Australia’s line-up of recognised batters while the pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah (2/35), Mohammed Siraj (1/26) and Hardik Pandya (1/28) removed the lower order, sinking Australia from 110/3 to 199 all out in 49.3 overs. Mitchell Starc (28) tried to help the Aussies play the full quota of 50 overs, but he failed.

In the chase of 200, India lost Ishan Kishan, skipper Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer for ducks, leaving India at 2/3. Then a 165-run stand between Virat (85 in 116 balls with six fours) and KL Rahul (97* in 115 balls with eight fours and two sixes) helped India secure a six-wicket win. Josh Hazlewood (3/38) was the best bowler for Australia.

India cricket icon Virat Kohli is all set to feature in his 4th ODI World Cup, having first featured in the 2011 edition which he won under the leadership of MS Dhoni. As Kohli gets the 2023 World Cup campaign underway, he would be on the cusp of going past Anil Kumble in an elite list of World Cup players. At present, Kohli and Kumble jointly hold the record of taking the most number of catches in ODI World Cup history for India.

Both Kohli and Kumble have grabbed 14 catches each for India in World Cups. While Kumble needed 18 matches to hit the mark, Kohli required 26.

Back to the grind after a couple of days’ leave, Virat Kohli’s extended net session was the focal point of Team India’s first training session in the city ahead of its World Cup opener against Australia on Sunday.

Closed door sessions are prevalent among football teams, where managers don’t want anyone to get a whiff of tactical preparedness of a team.

But it is not very common among cricket teams where tactical stuff is way more set but on Wednesday, Indian team decided to bar media from watching the session.

The biggest talking point will be bowling composition and whether India will field an extra seamer in Mohammed Shami or use local hero Ravichandran Ashwin depending on the surface used for the game.

With Hardik Pandya bowling 6-7 overs per game and at times even full quota, the temptation will be to field Ashwin, who can play with Australian minds.

Kohli faced customary throw-ins for considerable period before facing some of the local net bowlers.

While it was scheduled to be a two-hour training session, Kohli put in an extra 45 minutes as the team has already missed two warm-up games, which helps in simulation.

India missing out on its CWC warm-ups is not entirely a loss, given it had already played a three-match ODI series against Australia a couple of weeks back.

Although Kohli did not play the opening two games of the series, he did manage to play a composed knock of a 61-ball 56 in the final ODI in Rajkot.

Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid are two legends of Indian cricket. While Kumble has the most number of wickets among Indians in ODIs and Tests, Dravid’s batting and , to some extent, his wicketkeeping has made him a ever-respected name in Indian cricket. Dravid is currently the head coach of the Indian cricket team. On the other hand, Krishnamachari Srikkanth was a prominent member of Indian cricket team’s 1983 World Cup-winning team. Whereas Ravichandran Ashwin is among the leading wicket-takers among active cricketers.

The reason for taking the name of these cricketer from different eras at one go is that they all made it to a question in popular show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, “Which of these cricketers does not hold a degree in engineering?”

Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Ravichandran Ashwin were the options. Several social media users pointed out that Dravid was the right answer.

Indian cricket team coach Rahul Dravid, in his pre-departure press conference ahead of the Asia Cup, said that the team management had locked their number four and number five slot for the ODI World Cup almost 18 months ago but injuries to three batters in quick succession threw a spanner.

Dravid said that injuries to the likes of Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant forced the team management to try out other players in the middle-order in recent times, and it was not experimenting just for the sake of it.

“The No 4 and 5 spots are discussed a lot and gives the impression that we didn’t have clarity that who is going to be there. I could have told you 18-19 months ago who the three candidates for the two spots were,” Coach Rahul Dravid said.

“It was always between Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. There was not doubt,” Dravid said at India’s pre-departure presser ahead of the Asia Cup.

“It’s unfortunate that all three had injuries in the space of two months. What are the odds of that happening. All three guys pushing for those two spots, had serious injuries, had to go under the knife.

“So, you have to react to that, put other people in those positions and see who can do it. Just in case come a World Cup they are not fit. In that situation we tried a few people.”

The former Indian captain added, “This word (experimentation) keeps getting thrown around without being thought through. It’s not that we are experimenting for the sake of experimenting, sometimes there are specific reasons for it.”
