Pakistan cricket team had a good start in the recently-concluded Asia Cup tournament but failed to carry the momentum and bowed out of the event in the Super 4 stage, following a disappointing loss to Sri Lanka. After their shocking exit, rumours emerged that Pakistan captain Babar Azam and team’s ace pacer Shaheen Afridi were engaged in a war of words. According to a report in Bol News, Babar, after the loss to Sri Lanka, questioned the role of the senior players in the Asia Cup 2023 campaign. Shaheen interrupted him and said he should not generalise and not criticise those who did well, added the report.

Babar then replied that he is well aware about who is doing well and who’s not, according to the report that also claimed that Babar went to the press conference after the Asia Cup loss and on his way to the hotel did not talk to anybody.

While Shaheen had quelled the rumour with a post on social media, Babar Azam on Tuesday asserted that there is no bad blood in the dressing room following the Asia Cup disappointment.

For the unversed, Shaheen had posted a photo with Babar, along with the caption: “Family.”

In a pre-departure media conference on Tuesday, Babar said: “There is no ill will in the dressing room. There are discussions after every loss but they get twisted into something else entirely. The entire team is like a family and there is love and respect there.”

Most of the Pakistan squad members have not played in India before but skipper Babar Azam on Tuesday exuded confidence, saying his team has done its homework for the ODI World Cup beginning on October 5.

Pakistan team’s visas were finally cleared on Monday night and the side will be reaching Hyderabad via Dubai on Wednesday.

Only Mohammad Nawaz and Agha Salman have played in India before. Babar could not travel to India for the T20 World Cup in 2016 due to an injury.

Pakistan could become the number ODI team again even if India manage to beat Sri Lanka in the final of Asia Cup 2023. India had a golden opportunity to go for the top spot but their loss to Bangladesh in their last match of Super 4 stage in the tournament spoiled their chance. On the other hand, the Babar Azam and company had entered the continental event being the top-ranked ODI team. However, their defeats to India and Sri Lanka saw them lose the dominance.

Currently, both Pakistan and Australia have rating of 115 each. If South Africa beat Australia in the fifth and final ODI on Sunday, Pakistan will rise to the top spot irrespective of the result of the India vs Sri Lanka, Asia Cup 2023 final.

Heinrich Klaasen slammed 174 off 83 balls to lead South Africa to a 164-run win in the fourth ODI against Australia at SuperSport Park on Friday.

The defeat to the Mitchell Marsh-led side saw it getting equal on rating points with Pakistan. However, it continues to hold the top spot.

Klaasen shared an extraordinary fifth wicket partnership of 222 off only 94 balls with David Miller (82 not out) as South Africa piled up 416 for five, their fifth-highest total in ODI, before bowling out Australia for 252.

Klaasen smashed 13 fours and 13 sixes before being caught on the boundary off the last ball of the innings.

Alex Carey hit 99 off 77 balls for Australia and was last man out. Lungi Ngidi took four for 51 and Kagiso Rabada three for 41 for South Africa.

South Africa’s win tied the series at two matches apiece, setting up a decider in Johannesburg on Sunday.

On the other hand, Shubman Gill’s fine-tuned 121 and Axar Patel’s late surge of 42 went in vain as Bangladesh defeated India by 6 runs on Friday.

Chasing 266-run target, India were bundled out for 259 in 49.5 overs. Mustafizur Rahman starred with three wickets for Bangladesh.

Earlier, Shakib Al Hasan (80) and Tohwid Hridoy (54) slammed half-centuries as Bangladesh posted a total of 265 for 8 in 50 overs. For India, Shardul Thakur picked three wickets after captain Rohit won the toss and opted to bowl first. (Scorecard)

Virat Kohli‘s supreme fitness was evident in his 47th ODI century while comeback man KL Rahul produced an equally engaging ton on comeback as India thrashed a listless Pakistan by record 228-run margin in a rain-marred Super Four game of the Asia Cup on Sunday. This is India’s biggest win in terms of runs against the cross-border neighbours. India posted an imposing 356 for 2, as Kohli (122 not out off 94 balls) and Rahul (111 not out off 106 balls), which was his sixth ODI hundred, pummelled a hapless Pakistan, whose chase ended at 128 for 8 as Kuldeep Yadav (5/25) scythed through them.

On the century count in ODIs, Kohli now stands just two behind Sachin Tendulkar‘s record 49.

Once India restarted the day from 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs, they needed Kohli and Rahul, the two overnight batters, to go big, and they did that in some style.

Along with Rahul, Kohli amassed 233 runs for the unbeaten third wicket stand – the highest ODI partnership for India against Pakistan.

En route to his 77th international century, Kohli also added some personal milestones to an already long list, becoming the fastest batsman to 13000 ODI runs and scoring his fourth ton in as many innings at the R Premadasa Stadium.

Kohli is only the second batter to achieve the feat of scoring four successive hundreds at a venue after South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who made this sequence at Centurion.

However, Rahul’s hundred was equally important from a team’s perspective.

Rahul, who was playing for India for the first time since earlier this March after an injury lay-off, batted for 141 minutes without any discomfort, and later kept wickets to underline his return to full fitness.

Beyond the cold realm of numbers, the knocks of Kohli and Rahul carried immeasurable aesthetic value.

The ball was coming onto the bat nicely, and Pakistan attack was also defanged in the absence of injured Haris Rauf, who had brought in a semblance of control the previous day with a quick spell.

Barring Naseem Shah, none of the other four Pakistan bowlers managed to even beat Kohli and Rahul, who batted with a lot of panache. Kohli took his time to get going, allowing Rahul to do the early running.

But once he went past 50, Kohli switched the gears seamlessly, as he often does.

The first indication of a transformed Kohli came when he caned pacer Faheem Ashraf through the covers for a four. Kohli brought his quick hands into play to pounce on a length ball on the off-stump, and from that point he seldom looked back.

His first fifty had come in 55 balls, and the remaining 72 runs cascaded in just 39 balls, as Pakistan bowlers were put through the wringer. Sensing the mood that Kohli was in, Rahul slightly took his feet off the pedal.

The 31-year-old knew a big score was there for the taking and he just needed to keep his focus right on the button.

Pakistan bowlers erred in length against Rahul, giving him enough space outside the off-stump and the Bangalore man exploited it to the hilt to get some easy boundaries.

Four of his 12 boundaries came between point and third man and he collected a total of 24 runs from that region, the most productive in his innings.

After allowing Rahul to soak in his hundred, Kohli too went past the mark with a single and celebrated his own moment with gusto – a jump and punch in the air. Kohli, perhaps, saved his best for the last.

In the 50th over, the former captain carted Ashraf for two overs, a paddle sweep and a strike over cover, and applied the finishing touches with a whistling six over long-on.

Indian bowlers did not have to do anything extraordinary as they were defending 357, and the highest-ever run chase at this venue was 292.

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who was bowling in an ODI for the first time since July 2022, gave India the perfect start, sending Imam-ul-Haq into the hands of Shubman Gill at second slip.

Hardik Pandya breached the defence of Pakistan captain Babar Azam with a delivery that shaped in just that bit.

Kuldeep, India’s best bowler in ODIs this year, hastened their fall as the left-arm wrist spinner bamboozled the Pakistan middle and late order with his endless variations.

The injured Rauf and Naseem Shah did not come out to bat as Indian bowlers were not even required to strive for 10 wickets.

Pakistan registered a massive seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the Super 4 Asia Cup match on Wednesday in Lahore. Chasing 194, the hosts comfortably went across the line in just 39.3 overs as Imam-ul-Haq scored 78 while Mohammad Rizwan smashed an unbeaten 64. Earlier, Haris Rauf took three wickets and Naseem Shah took two as Pakistan bundled out Bangladesh for 193. Despite registering a big win, Pakistan will be having a tense moment as their star pacer Naseem Shah suffered an injury blow during the match.

It happened during Pakistan’s Super-Four fixture of the Asia Cup versus Bangladesh here on Wednesday. With Bangladesh batting first, pacer Shaheen Afridi bowled to Mohammad Naim, who flicked the ball to the fine leg. As Naseem went for a full-length dive to his left to stop the ball, he immediately held his arm and was in visible pain.

The team physio rushed in, while Naseem remained laid on the ground for a few minutes before walking off the field.

Although Naseem’s injury is yet to be ascertained, it raises concerns in the Pakistan camp ahead of its vital encounter against arch-rival India on Sunday in Colombo.

Here’s how the fans reacted:

Also, with the ICC Cricket World Cup due to happen in India next month, an injury to Naseem could severely hamper Pakistan’s plans.

Naseem has been good with the ball for the Men in Green, being the second-most wicket-taker in the continuing event, clasping five in three outings at an economy of 4.29, with the best figures of 3 for 36 that came against the Men in Blue.

Talking about the match, Haris Rauf bowled a couple of hostile spells, while Imam-ul-Haq struck a silken 78 as Pakistan secured a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in a Super Four clash of the Asia Cup in Lahore on Wednesday.

Rauf (6-0-19-4) proved to be too quick for the Bangladeshi batters, who were also troubled relentlessly by Naseem Shah (5.4-0-34-3) after Shakib-Al-Hasan opted to bat.

Bangladesh were eventually bundled out for a paltry 193 in just 38.4 overs, despite a 100-run stand and twin half-centuries by Shakib (53 off 57 balls) and former captain Mushfiqur Rahim (64 off 87 balls).

The target was never going to pose a problem for the hosts, who knocked it off in just 39.3 overs.

Former Indian cricket team star Mohammed Kaif believes that pacer Mohammed Shami can cause problems for Babar Azam when India take on Pakistan in their first match of Asia Cup 2023 on Saturday. In a recent interaction, Kaif explained that Shami managed the bowling well when Jasprit Bumrah was out of action due to injury and with the fast bowler enjoying a good run of form, he can prove to be a key asset for the Rohit Sharma-led side in the high-voltage match against Pakistan.

“Mohammed Shami is a fantastic bowler, his form is also very good. And even in Bumrah’s absence, he managed the bowling very well. Even his form in the IPL was great. So he has a lot of talent. In my opinion, Babar Azam is going to have a lot of difficulty,” Kaif said on Star Sports.

Three possible high-octane India versus Pakistan games for the starved fans on both sides of the border along with a final chance for five nations to put their respective houses in order before the World Cup adds context to the Asia Cup, starting in Multan on Wednesday. It is a tournament that has often struggled to find relevance in the midst of mushrooming bilateral contests over the last decade along with the waning popularity of T20 cricket but the 2023 edition, beginning on Wednesday, has occupied a large slice of the mind space of team think tanks.

It is the final stop for five of the six teams barring Nepal, to find answers for some nagging questions ahead of the global event, starting October 5.

Pakistan Cricket Board is facing strong criticism from fans and a few former players over the omission of country’s name on the official Asia Cup logo on participating teams’ jerseys. Former captain Rashid Latif was among those who lashed out at the board soon after the Pakistan team took the field against Nepal in the opening match of the Asia Cup in Multan on Wednesday. Though Asia Cup is jointly staged by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the former is the host of the tournament. “This is unacceptable and it is the Asian Cricket Council which must explain this oversight since the Asia Cup is their property,” he said. Since the hue and cry, PCB unofficially has tried to play down the situation by saying that the ACC had taken a decision after last year’s Asia Cup that the host country’s name would not be given with the Asia Cup logo in future events.

But most Pakistani cricket fans on social media are not willing to accept this explanation. Some have even questioned that even if the ACC had taken such a decision, why did the PCB agree to it since Pakistan was hosting a multi-team event after 15-years.

“Makes no sense at all. Then why has the ACC given the host country’s name on the logos for their Asian Emerging Nations Cup or their Asian under-16 event held in July in Malaysia,” former Test batsman Mohsin Khan questioned.

Mohsin Khan said the ACC should clear the confusion.

Another former player who didn’t want to be named believes that Jay Shah, the President of the ACC and secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was the reason for Pakistan not being acknowledged as the host nation on the official logo.

“Given the current scenario between the two countries perhaps the BCCI official felt it would be embarrassing for the Indian team players to wear kits with the name of Pakistan on the official Asia Cup logo,” he said.

Rashid Latif didn’t rule out this possibility and said what had happened was embarrassing and needed to be clarified.

“For Me, This Format Is The Most Challenging One”: Suryakumar Yadav’s Honest Take On ODI Cricket https://artifexnews.net/for-me-this-format-is-the-most-challenging-one-suryakumar-yadavs-honest-take-on-odi-cricket-4336884/ Tue, 29 Aug 2023 01:30:49 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/for-me-this-format-is-the-most-challenging-one-suryakumar-yadavs-honest-take-on-odi-cricket-4336884/ Read More ““For Me, This Format Is The Most Challenging One”: Suryakumar Yadav’s Honest Take On ODI Cricket” »

]]>

Suryakumar Yadav admitted that ODI cricket is the “most challenging” format for him. However, he added that he is looking forward to doing well in the format. The 32-year-old right-hander is the number one T20I batter but he has failed to replicate the performance in the 50-over games for India. With an under-par performance so far, Suryakumar struggles to find his feet in ODI cricket. The batter said that he continues to seek help from Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

“I would try to fulfill the role I am given by the team, no matter what role. This is a format I am looking forward to doing well in. I am doing great in T20Is. But these both are white-ball formats. Why I cannot crack the code here, people are wondering,” Suryakumar told Star Sports as quoted by ANI.

Suryakumar said that he finds the ODI format the most challenging one because one has to play a healthy mix of all formats in it.

“I am practicing. For me, this format is the most challenging one…you have to play a mix of all formats in this one. First you take your time, then you do some strike rotation then go for some big shots like in T20Is. I have been talking to head coach Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli,” he added.

Suryakumar said he is trying to keep his attacking intent and approach intact.

“But I am now trying to play as per the situation and practicing accordingly. Hopefully, this is the tournament where I crack the code,” he added.

“I am always excited to bat. It does not matter if I am out on the first ball. People ask me why I sprint to the crease when my chance to bat comes, but I feel that maintaining this excitement is important. When I am running well and play a few good strokes, I feel that I am in my zone and need to do something big for my team,” he concluded.

In 26 ODIs and 24 innings, Suryakumar has managed just 511 runs at an average of 24.33, with two half-centuries.

Interestingly, Suryakumar got a solid start in ODI cricket. In his first six innings, he scored 261 runs at an average of 65.25, with two half-centuries. His last half-century was in February 2022 against West Indies. In his first-ever ODI series against Sri Lanka, he also won the ‘Man of the Series’ award for scoring 124 runs in three innings at an average of 62.00 with one half-century, striking at a strike rate of around 122.

But since then, it has been downhill for the batter. In 18 innings that followed since his last fifty, he has scored just 250 runs at an average of 14.70, with the best score of 35. This also includes three successive golden ducks against Australia. His drastic fall in ODIs and struggle to keep going in ODIs despite promising starts has puzzled a lot of fans.
