Indian javelin thrower Annu Rani was so upset with a string of poor performances this year that she had decided to say goodbye to the sport just before the Asian Games. The 31-year-old from Uttar Pradesh produced a season-best effort of 62.92m to became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games gold in javelin throw. “I have struggled a lot this year. I went abroad to practice. I went to learn from a foreign coach but my performance dropped. The whole year had gone waste. There was poor performance in every competition one after the other,” Annu told PTI Bhasha in an interview.

“I had decided before the Asian Games that I would leave sports. Despite so much effort, I was not able to win anything. The government and SAI had invested so much money in me but I was not able to perform. After the World Championships in Budapest, I had thought of quitting the sport.” Annu stood 11th with a best throw of 57.05 meter and could not qualify for the finals in World Championship in Budapest in August.

She finished 7th at the Diamond League in Brussels in September with a throw of 57.74m meters. She could not touch the 60 meter mark in the entire season.

However, she won the gold medal at the Asian Games with a throw of 69.92 metres.

Regarding changing her decision of retiring from sports, Annu said, “It came to my mind that I have come here after facing so many struggles, so I will take one last chance in the Asian Games. I worked hard and was confident that I would play well and win a medal.

“The competition was tough with World Championship medallists and Olympic medallists. I had come down thinking that the worst that had to happen has already happened and now what will get worse and I only wanted gold, not silver or bronze.” Annu said that her childhood struggles inspired her to fight and she wanted to be an inspiration for girls in similar situations.

“I inspired myself by remembering the circumstances of my family and where I started from. I also thought that I am not the only one struggling. People have to struggle in every field.

“I come from a society where people used to stop me even if I wore a lower t-shirt. The family had no knowledge of sports. Was scolded at home for wearing lower t-shirt for the first time. I didn’t even have shoes and had to borrow them from a friend when I went to compete. Remembering the journey, the struggle that I faced to reach here, I thought that I will not accept defeat.” Annu said now she is focusing on the Olympics.

“Now the aim is to perform well in the Paris Olympics. I want to tell the players coming from the same background as me that they should not give up, they should fight for themselves and girls can do anything.

“Now we are getting support from government, SAI and federation in everything. If collaboration like TOPS and Khelo India continues, there will be a lot of medals in the next Olympics,” she said.

In the men’s javelin throw event in the Asian Games, Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal and Kishore Jena claimed the silver.

Annu believes that the future of javelin throw in India is very bright and this performance will inspire the youth to take up the sport.

“Once an Olympic medal comes in any sport, the mindset changes. We feel that coming from the same environment, taking same diet and when Neeraj can win, we can also win.

“This builds trust among budding players. Now the players are performing so well. Seven-eight years ago players used to go to participate in the Olympics but now their aspirations have increased so much that they are not satisfied even with silver, they want only gold.”

Indian cyclist David Beckham Elkatohchoongo’s hopes of winning a medal at the Asian Games ended after he lost the quarterfinal match in men’s sprint event at the Asian Games on Thursday. David lost to Kaiya Ota after finishing 2.395 seconds behind the Japanese in the first race and 0.046 seconds in the second race at the sprint quarterfinal heat 2. He will now compete for 5th–8th place in the event. Among others, Niraj Kumar finished in seventh place with 24 points in the men’s Omnium Scratch race 1/4.

David Beckham Elkatohchoongo and Ronaldo Laitonjam Singh are both track cyclists for India.

And they did bend it like Beckham as they sped round the steeply banked curves of the Chun’an Jieshou Sports Centre Velodrome.

Ronaldo had made his Games debut on Tuesday, helping India to fifth place in Tuesday’s team sprint qualification.

Beckham placed ninth in Wednesday’s individual sprint qualifying, four places higher than Ronaldo.

“My father was a footballer in the national team, and he was a huge fan of David Beckham,” Elkatohchoongo explained.

“When I was born in the hospital, they told my mum: if it’s a boy, then it’s David Beckham.”

One might think with a name like that he might have turned to football rather than cycling.

“I played football when I was young, 14 years old,” he said.

“I switched to cycling in 2017, and I started my professional cycling (career) in Delhi five years ago, and now I’m in the professional league properly.”

Laitonjam’s father was similarly a massive fan of the former Barcelona and Brazil wizard Ronaldinho.

Posted in Kashmir for work, he had a wager with some friends on Ronaldinho to score against England in the quarter-final of the 2002 World Cup.

Ronaldinho obliged with the winner in a 2-1 victory and Brazil went on to lift the trophy.

Seconds after the game, the phone rang and he discovered his wife had gone into labour in their home town of Imphal almost 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles) away.

“Just as the ball went in the goal, I must have started making an appearance,” Laitonjam told The Hindu newspaper.

“I think my dad won some money that day. That’s probably why I got that name. He felt I was very lucky for him.”

Indian rowers powered their way to two silver and a bronze medal, launching their campaign in the Asian Games on a rollicking note on Sunday. On a pleasant morning with the conditions just perfect for rowing at the Fuyang Water Sports Centre, Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh opened the country’s account with a silver medal in the men’s lightweight doubles sculls event. The Indian duo clocked 6:28.18s to finish behind China’s Junjie Fan and Man Sun, who won gold with 6:23.16s.

The Uzbekistan pair of Shakhzod Nurmatov and Sobirjon Safaroliyev bagged the bronze clocking 6:33.42s.

The silver was just the preview of the things to come as the gruelling men’s coxed eight event saw a keen tussle between China and India before the latter finished second with a time of 5:43.01s, which was 2.84s behind the host team, which clocked 5:40.17.

The Indian men’s coxed-eight team comprised Neeraj, Nareskh Kalwaniya, Neetish Kumar, Charanjeet Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Bheem Singh, Puneet Kumar and Ashish.

Indonesia, who clocked a time of 5:45.51s were third.

The achievement is all the more creditable given that rowers from powerhouse Uzbekistan and Japan finished fourth and fifth respectively.

In the coxless pair event, India Babulal Yadav and Lekh Ram had to settle for bronze with a time of 6:50.41 sec, behind gold medallists Hong Kong, China (6:44.20 sec) and Uzbekistan 6:48.11.

India has sent a huge contingent of 33 rowers at the continental games.

Arvind, following his exploits in lightweight doubles sculls, said the pair was aiming for gold but an injury setback two months back had hampered training.

“We missed training for 20 to 25 days as I was having lower-back pain two months back. Otherwise, we would have won the gold medal,” said Arvind.

He added that their next target will be to aim for glory at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“We will now work for the Paris Olympics and then try to win gold at the 2026 Asian Games.” Arvind credited his quick recovery to his physiotherapist.

“I did recovery-related exercises and our physiotherapist prepared me very well to regain strength. He helped me recover in one month,” added Arvind.

His team-mate Arjun too said that they had the gold medal on their mind when they started the race.

“Gold was the target but we did our best. Our coach told us to just do our best. We could not do our (personal) best of 6:19, which we did at our Army nodal centre in Pune,” said Arjun.

On the reason they fell back after taking a sizeable lead around the 500m mark, Arjun said, “We pushed hard and did our best today.”

Blending elements of artificial intelligence and environmentally friendly technology, the Hangzhou Asian Games began on Saturday with a one-of-a-kind opening ceremony, headlined by a spectacular futuristic light show. The dazzling programme, held amid a diplomatic row over the denial of entry to three Indian athletes from Arunachal Pradesh, was a melange of technology, cultural history of China, and the spirit of the continent’s unity.

In keeping with the main theme of ‘Tides Surging in Asia’, the ceremony was about the intermingling of China, Asia and the world in the new era, as well as the unity, love and friendship of the Asian people.

The water element through the surging tide of Qiantang river — which flows through Hangzhou — was the underlying theme of the grand evening which lasted nearly two hours.

The ceremony sought to portray a distinctly Chinese and an uniquely Asian flair, capturing the country’s cultural heritage and romantic imagery through the blending of its thousands of years old civilization and modern technology, through stunning visuals.

It portrayed the efforts of China’s path to modernisation in a presentation that combined Eastern aesthetics and a viewpoint that connects with a global audience.

The technological might of China was written all over with the lighting of the cauldron — the Games’ Flame — being done in a unique way.

Digital technology was utilised as torchbearers in the virtual and physical worlds jointly lighted the cauldron.

Chinese President Xi Jinping declared the Games open as more than 12,000 athletes from 45 countries gear up to fight for top honours till October 8.

The Olympic Council of Asia’s (OCA) acting president Randhir Singh, International Olympic Committee (IOC) head Thomas Bach, heads of several countries, officials of National Olympic Committees and host of other dignitary were present on the occasion.

The Games are being held belatedly due to a surge in Covid cases in China last year.

In keeping with the concept of ‘Green Asian Games’ or carbon-neutral Games, the opening ceremony used digital fireworks instead of real ones. It, nevertheless, created a thrilling atmosphere.

The nearly-packed 80,000 capacity ‘Big Lotus’ stadium was decked up elegantly for the occasion and welcomed the athletes from the participating countries, including India, with loud cheers.

After three wushu players from Arunachal Pradesh were denied visa by the Chinese government, India had cancelled the visit of its sports minister Anurag Thakur. Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha was not present as she is currently in Paraguay as part of a Parliamentary delegation, though other officials attended the ceremony.

Loud cheers greeted the nearly 100 Indian athletes and officials as they marched into the stadium, led by flag-bearers Harmanpreet Singh and Lovlina Borgohain. The Indian contingent walked out for the athletes’ parade in eighth position.

From the tennis team, only Ramkumar Ramanathan participated in the parade since the other players have matches on Sunday.

The male athletes were clad in bandhgala jacket and khaki kurta while their female counterparts donned high-necked blouse and khaki-textured saree made from recycled fabrics.

India is fielding 655 athletes in the Games.

To begin with, the theme ‘Water in Autumn Glow’ depicted water as the heart and soul of Hangzhou, where water comes in many forms — West Lake, Qiantang Tidal Bores, the thousand-year-old Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and the water conservation system of the Archeological Ruin of Liangzhu City.

In a bid to use culture as a medium of blending the power of technology and the beauty of art inspired by traditional Chinese culture, the opening ceremony combined the flavour of Hangzhou, Zhejiang province imagery and elements unique to the country.

Through innovative modern technologies, the ceremony also showcased the attractiveness, appeal and unique nature of Eastern aesthetics, as well as the profound impact culture has, the power of science, and the encompassing reach of art.

After around an hour-long protocol part of the ceremony, a cultural programme of 30 minutes enthralled the crowd. That was followed by the lighting of the Cauldron and playing of the official song.

By hosting the continent’s biggest multi-sporting event, China has heralded its opening from the pandemic with a giant competition, the largest ever in its history.

No doubt, the Olympics is the pinnacle multi-sporting event in the world but more athletes compete in the Asian Games, with more than 12,000 taking part in Hangzhou.

About 11,000 participated in the Tokyo Olympics two years ago and about 10,500 will do so in the next year’s Paris Games.

The 2018 Asian Games had seen a little over 11,000 athletes taking part, which will be surpassed in Hangzhou.

Besides Hangzhou, the 19th edition of the continental showpiece will be held in five other cities — Huzhou, Ningbo, Shaoxing, Jinhua and Wenzhou.

Forty-five nations and territories in Asia will compete for 481 gold medals from 40 sports and 61 disciplines, including Esports which is making its debut in the Games. Competitions in football, volleyball, cricket, rowing, sailing and modern pentathlon began before Saturday’s opening ceremony.
