Holders Real Madrid will face Liverpool away and host Borussia Dortmund in a repeat of last season’s final in the league stage of the new-look Champions League, the draw for which took place on Thursday. Every team will play eight games against eight different opponents in the new format of Europe’s elite club competition, with all 36 clubs now pooled together into one league rather than split into groups. Madrid, who have signed France superstar Kylian Mbappe since winning a record-extending 15th European Cup, will also notably play AC Milan at home and will go to Atalanta.

Real beat last season’s Europa League winners Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw earlier this month.

Liverpool, who are back in the Champions League after a one-season absence, will also notably meet Milan and take on tournament debutants Girona.

However, supporters of the Anfield club will perhaps be most excited about the prospect of hosting German champions Bayer Leverkusen, coached by former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, winners of the competition in 2023, will play at home to Italian champions Inter Milan and go to both Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

However, they were also handed more comfortable opponents including Club Brugge, Sparta Prague and Slovan Bratislava, who have never played in the modern Champions League proper.

Other standout head-to-heads will include Bayern Munich against both PSG and Barcelona, and Arsenal against Inter and Paris.

The number of clubs in the Champions League has increased from 32 in the past, with the 36 participants split into four seeded pots of nine for the draw.

Every team faces two teams from each of the four pots, one at home and one away. The first matches will be played on September 17, 18 and 19.

The two extra matchdays in the new league phase will take place in January, at the end of which the top eight clubs in the 36-team classification will advance directly to the last 16.

Those ranked between ninth and 24th place will go through to play a play-off round from which will emerge the remaining eight sides advancing to the last 16.

The bottom 12 in the league phase will be eliminated altogether, with no clubs parachuting down into the Europa League as in the past.

The Europa League and third-tier Conference League, the draws for which take place on Friday, will also now feature 36 clubs, although the latter competition will involve only six matchdays in the league phase.

A new era in European club football begins on Thursday when the draw takes place in Monaco for an expanded UEFA Champions League featuring a radically changed format. European football’s governing body is selling what it describes as “a thrilling new future” for the game on the continent with more teams playing more matches, and more prize money on offer. UEFA needs to generate hype around the new format, because there is a risk — in the beginning at least — that fans will find it confusing compared to the old model.

For the last 21 years, the Champions League had consisted of a group stage in which 32 clubs were split into eight groups of four, each playing six games. The top two in each group qualified for the knockout phase.

The new version will feature 36 clubs with everyone playing eight matches, but all teams pooled together into one giant league rather than in groups.

Clubs will still be split into four seeded pots of nine teams, with every participant given two opponents from each pot.

The top eight in the final ranking go through to the last 16, while the next 16 sides advance to an intermediate play-off round and the remainder go out.

The new format was introduced against the backdrop of the threat by Europe’s biggest clubs to break away and form their own Super League.

But UEFA are also hoping the format can be a solution to the problem of competitive imbalance in the sport which was making the group stage more predictable.

“The new format will introduce a better competitive balance between all the teams, with the possibility for each team to play opponents of a similar competitive level throughout the league phase,” UEFA say.

Financial rewards

What the changes will certainly not address are concerns about too much football being played and damaging the quality as a result.

The increasing demands on players, and the lack of rest as a result, were cited as reasons why many matches at Euro 2024 proved disappointing.

The new Champions League, in a season which is also set to finish with the first expanded version of FIFA’s Club World Cup, will feature a total of 144 games in the group stage, up from 96 before.

The financial rewards are greater, however, with UEFA’s total prize pot for the Champions League rising by about 25 percent to almost 2.5 billion euros ($2.79 billion).

The winners of the competition can pocket over 86 million euros just in prize money, not including bonuses of 700,000 euros for every point gained in the league phase or income from television.

Real Madrid were the winners last season, raising the trophy for the sixth time in the last 11 years.

The addition of Kylian Mbappe to their squad means they will hope to go all the way again, and emerge victorious in the final in Munich on May 31, next year.

Newcomers

This season’s Champions League will include newcomers such as Girona from Spain, while Bologna of Italy take part in Europe’s elite club competition for the first time in 60 years.

Brest of France had never qualified for any European competition before, but now take part after finishing third in Ligue 1 last season — taking advantage of the extra place handed to France as the fifth-ranked league in Europe.

As for the other additional places, one goes to a national champion who will emerge from the qualifying rounds, while Italy and Germany get an extra team each because of the performances of their clubs in Europe last season.

UEFA said the draw itself will be a “hybrid” affair, between the manual drawing of balls and the use of software, having calculated that doing it all by hand would take more than three hours.

The Europa League and Conference League, the draws for which will both take place on Friday, will also now feature 36 teams, although there will be only six matches for clubs in the league phase of the latter competition.

Atletico Madrid eased to a 2-1 win over Alaves on Sunday to rise above champions Barcelona to third in La Liga. After league leaders Real Madrid beat the Catalans 2-1 in Saturday’s Clasico, Diego Simeone’s Atletico took full advantage to move a point ahead of Xavi Hernandez’s side. Atletico trail Los Blancos and second-place Girona by three points, having played a game less. Alvaro Morata scored and set up Rodrigo Riquelme’s opener as Atletico cruised to victory over Alaves, 17th, at the Metropolitano stadium.

Ander Guevara pulled one back at the death for Alaves but it was too little, too late.

Atletico have now won 14 consecutive league matches at home, equalling the club’s all-time record set in 2013 at their former stadium, the Vicente Calderon.

“(The record) is not by chance, at home with our fans we feel more comfortable, they make us feel stronger, this win is very important for us,” Riquelme told Movistar.

“We’re on the right path, going game by game and we aren’t thinking about the league table.”

Riquelme sent Atletico ahead after 26 minutes when Antoine Griezmann slipped in Morata, who crossed to the back post.

The Spanish midfielder cleverly opened up some space and flashed a shot into the near top corner.

Morata doubled Atletico’s advantage just before half-time when he gathered Koke‘s long ball, cut inside from the right and swept home.

Griezmann had a goal disallowed in the second half for a foul by Marcos Llorente in the build-up as Atletico largely cruised.

Alaves pulled one back deep in stoppage time when Guevara struck from the edge of the box, with goalkeeper Jan Oblak partly to blame as he should have kept the shot out.

“We were a lot better in the second half, we should have played like that in the first half,” Alaves defender Javi Lopez told Movistar.

“We haven’t had good results away from home … (but) if we compete like this, the results will come.”

Earlier Bebe‘s fine late strike earned Rayo Vallecano a 2-2 draw against high-flying Real Sociedad.

The former Manchester United midfielder netted a vital stoppage-time goal for the second week running after his late penalty against Las Palmas last weekend.

Mikel Oyarzabal scored a brace for La Real, fifth, after Abdul Mumin opened the scoring for Rayo, but Bebe hammered home a low drive from long distance to share the spoils.

Rayo Vallecano are seventh, level on points with eighth-placed Betis, who beat Osasuna 2-1 earlier on thanks to Isco‘s superb late goal.

The ex-Real Madrid playmaker set up Willian Jose for the opener and then after Ruben Garcia appeared to rescue the visitors a point, Isco flashed a strike home in stoppage time to delight the Benito Villamarin.

Antoine Griezmann struck a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over 10-man Celta Vigo to help Atletico Madrid climb provisionally second in La Liga on Saturday. The French forward was at his lethal best in a comfortable win at Celta’s Balaidos stadium for Diego Simeone’s side, made easier by the hosts’ goalkeeper Ivan Villar’s early dismissal. The stopper took out Atletico striker Alvaro Morata in the area midway through the first half and was dismissed, with former Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita coming on for his Celta debut.

His first job was to pick the ball out of the net as Griezmann dispatched the resulting penalty, before netting twice more to move second in the Spanish goalscoring charts on seven league goals, behind Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham.

The hosts, who came close themselves before Villar’s dismissal, nearly levelled when Jorgen Strand Larsen fired over after good work by Iago Aspas, and Jonathan Bamba hit the bar.

Guaita denied Samuel Lino just before half-time but he could not keep Griezmann at bay.

The Frenchman drove forward brilliantly from inside his own half into the Celta area, and then slipped as he tried to cross the ball, accidentally driving it past Guaita at the near post.

Griezmann slotted Nahuel Molina’s low cross home to complete his treble and round off a superb night for the Rojiblancos.

Atletico trail La Liga leaders Real Madrid by three points, but have a game in hand on their rivals, who drew 1-1 at Sevilla earlier Saturday.

Simeone’s side are level with Girona, third, on 22 points, with the Catalans hosting bottom team Almeria on Sunday before champions Barcelona, fourth, welcome Athletic Bilbao.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone said his team put in their “weakest” performance of his 12-year reign in a 3-0 thrashing by Valencia on Saturday in La Liga. Los Che have started the season well after flirting with relegation until the final day of the previous campaign, and this was their best performance yet under coach Ruben Baraja. Simeone has faced many different Valencia coaches over almost 12 years in charge and had only lost twice before this defeat at Mestalla in 28 clashes.

“We had the weakest game since I arrived at the club, and we have to congratulate our opponents,” said Simeone.

Defeat was the worst way for Atletico to prepare for the start of their Champions League campaign on Tuesday at Lazio. “They came into the game with a lot more intensity and if you don’t match it … it’s impossible to win any game,” said Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

“They deserved to win, we have to congratulate them and we have to look in the mirror. We know we can give a lot more than we gave today.

“We lacked everything today… we played a very bad game, we lost 3-0 and that hurts a lot.”

Atletico suffered their first defeat of the season as they went down without a fight. Spanish striker Duro, 23, slid in at the near post to fire into the roof of Oblak’s net after just five minutes.

The forward kept his composure to beat the Slovenian goalkeeper again when sent through on goal by Fran Perez after shrugging off Axel Witsel.

“It was important to win after two defeats and we did it against a great opponent,” said Duro. “We may be a small squad but we will give everything.”

Javi Guerra struck the third goal with a fine solo move and finish inside Oblak’s near post as Los Che continued to dominate. Valencia could have increased their lead but Oblak saved well from Diego Lopez in the final stages, among other openings.

“I am not at all angry, I know the players we have, the group in the dressing room, but I accept it when we’ve played a bad match,” added Simeone.

Earlier Athletic Bilbao earned a convincing 3-0 win over Cadiz to climb provisionally second behind leaders Real Madrid, who host Real Sociedad Sunday. Champions Barcelona welcome Real Betis later Saturday.

La Liga postponed Atletico Madrid’s match against Sevilla on Sunday because of heavy rain forecast in the Spanish capital. “(The game) at the Civitas Metropolitano has been postponed due to the bad weather forecast for this afternoon,” Atletico Madrid said in a statement. “After conversations with the Spanish football federation, the National Sports Council and both clubs, La Liga took the decision to postpone the game.”

The Spanish capital is on alert due to the likelihood of heavy rain throughout Sunday due to a weather front also affecting other Spanish regions.

Madrid city council asked citizens to “stay indoors and not to go out unless strictly necessary”.

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) issued alerts across much of Spain on Sunday.

“(Madrid) is facing a very complicated afternoon and evening, with all-time record rainfall since 1972 due,” said mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida.

Real Madrid played Saturday under their new roof at the Santiago Bernabeu for the first time in a 2-1 win over Getafe. Los Blancos closed the roof because rain had been forecast.
