Dubai :

Former ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions Sri Lanka find themselves in Group D alongside South Africa, Bangladesh, Netherlands and Nepal for the upcoming tournament. This group promises thrilling matches with rivals Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, South Africa and Netherlands pitted against one another. While Nepal gears up for their second appearance in the marquee event, the group boasts no clear-cut favourite with history bearing witness that each team carries the potential to beat the other. Let’s run through the teams in this group and what we can expect from them.

Bangladesh:

Bangladesh enters the T20 World Cup with a bit of uncertainty as they continue to look for their strongest XI. Experienced opener Litton Das has been out of form of late with an average of 13.16 this year in six matches. Although teammate Tawhid Hridoy is confident that Das will make a strong comeback in the tournament.

Another concern is the injury to vice-captain Taskin Ahmed and his fitness will be monitored prior to Bangladesh’s first contest against Sri Lanka on 7 June after he suffered a side strain before the final match of the recent series against Zimbabwe.

The Tigers have backed experience. Other than Das, they have former Bangladesh skippers Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan who can provide Najmul Hossain Shanto much-needed support as he undertakes his first ICC tournament as the new captain.

Squad:

Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Taskin Ahmed (Vice Captain), Litton Kumer Das, Soumya Sarkar, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Shakib Al Hasan, Tawhid Hridoy, Mahmud Ullah Riyad, Jaker Ali Anik, Tanvir Islam, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib. Travelling reserves: Afif Hossain, Hasan Mahmud

Fixtures:

7 June: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh, Dallas

10 June: South Africa vs Bangladesh, New York

13 June: Bangladesh vs Netherlands, St. Vincent

16 June: Bangladesh vs Nepal, St. Vincent

Players to watch out for:

In conditions that are expected to be slow with some assistance from spinners, Mustafizur Rahman’s skill set including deceptive off-cutters can turn out to be useful.

Mustafizur has time and again proven to be a match-winner for Bangladesh. His control in the middle overs and effectiveness in the final overs with a recovering Taskin Ahmed make him a priceless inclusion.

Nepal:

Nepal will feature a young side at the T20 World Cup, with 21-year-old Rohit Paudel leading the team as captain. Paudel’s recent form against West Indies A in the lead up to the tournament is a big positive with scores of 112, 71*, and 82 in the series.

Gulshan Jha, who appeared at the U19 World Cup earlier in the year, along with 19-year-old Pratis GC are the other young stars expected to bring fireworks.

Sompal Kami, the fast bowling all-rounder, is the sole player from Nepal’s inaugural 2014 squad to feature in the 2024 edition, with veteran Karan KC joining him as the team’s senior member.

This will mark Nepal’s second appearance in the tournament making them the least experienced side in the group.

Squad:

Rohit Paudel (c), Aasif Sheikh, Anil Kumar Sah, Kushal Bhurtel, Kushal Malla, Dipendra Singh Airee, Lalit Rajbanshi, Karan KC, Gulshan Jha, Sompal Kami, Pratis GC, Sundeep Jora, Abinash Bohara, Sagar Dhakal, Kamal Singh Airee

Fixtures:

4 June: Netherlands vs Nepal, Dallas

11 June: Sri Lanka vs Nepal, Florida

14 June: South Africa vs Nepal, St. Vincent

16 June: Bangladesh vs Nepal, St. Vincent

Players to watch out for:

The latest entrant in the six sixes club, Dipendra Singh Airee, comes in with a hard-hitting reputation. Dipendra bludgeoned six sixes in the ACC Men’s T20I Premier Cup clash against Qatar becoming only the third men’s player to do so in T20Is after Yuvraj Singh (2007) and Keiron Pollard (2021).

He also is the current record holder of the fastest T20I fifty. The right-handed batter achieved this feat in nine balls, breaking Yuvraj’s record of 12 deliveries.

The 24-year-old’s contribution in the middle overs can help Nepal put up a strong challenge in the group.

Netherlands:

The Netherlands have often brought the element of surprise in an ICC tournament. They have the edge over Proteas, beating them in the last two ICC Men’s tournaments – in the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

They will face South Africa again on 8 June in New York with the aim to complete a hat-trick of wins. 20-year-old Michael Levitt has found a place in the absence of Colin Ackermann after an impressive hundred against Namibia earlier this year.

The Dutch have restored their core players for this edition with captain Scott Edwards, Bas de Leede, Logan van Beek, Max O’Dowd, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Vikram Singh and Wesley Barresi bringing the experience.

Squad:

Scott Edwards (c), Aryan Dutt, Bas de Leede, Daniel Doram, Fred Klaassen, Logan van Beek, Max O’Dowd, Michael Levitt, Paul van Meekeren, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Teja Nidamanuru, Tim Pringle, Vikram Singh, Viv Kingma, Wesley Barresi. Reserve: Kyle Klein

Fixtures:

4 June: Netherlands vs Nepal, Dallas

8 June: Netherlands vs South Africa, New York

13 June: Bangladesh vs Netherlands, St. Vincent

16 June: Sri Lanka vs Netherlands, St. Lucia

Players to watch out for:

Bas de Leede has been instrumental for the Netherlands with both bat and ball. For his impressive performance last year, de Leede was awarded with the ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Year.

However, the 24-year-old all-rounder has played little T20I cricket of late, with his recent appearances in the tri-series with Scotland and Ireland being his first matches in the shortest format since 2022 at the most recent edition of the T20 World Cup. De Leede was one of the Netherlands’ best at the event where he finished as their leading wicket-taker with 13 scalps.

South Africa:

Perhaps the strongest side in this group and the tournament, South Africa have put together a strong squad.

The batting line-up consists of experienced Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller and Reeza Hendricks who can bludgeon bowling attacks with Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs promising to bring the spark of youth.

The fast-bowling department displays assurance with Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Gerald Coetzee, Marco Jansen and Ottniel Baartman. Meanwhile, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi and Bjorn Fortuin complete the spin department.

However, the Proteas miss a genuine all-rounder in their line-up. Jansen has proven to be handy with the bat but primarily serves as their opening bowler.

The pressure will be on as Proteas hope to make their first appearance in a final of the Men’s T20 World Cup.

Squad:

Aiden Markram (c), Ottniel Baartman, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs

Fixtures:

3 June: Sri Lanka vs South Africa, New York

8 June: Netherlands vs South Africa, New York

10 June: South Africa vs Bangladesh, New York

14 June: South Africa vs Nepal, St. Vincent

Players to watch out for:

The dangerous Heinrich Klaasen has been in top form since the start of this year. Across all T20 competitions, Klaasen has smashed 69 maximums in 25 matches from 25 matches.

Klaasen brings versatility. Not only can he keep wickets, but he also brings the ability to attack spin bowling with a strike rate of 159.09 against them in T20s. His performance in this year’s SA20 and the IPL has confirmed that he can play the explosive middle-order batter role to perfection.

Sri Lanka:

Wanindu Hasaranga will undertake his first major assignment as the newly appointed Sri Lanka. The Lions have struck a balance with a unit that checks most boxes.

Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, and Dhananjaya De Silva compose a firm batting group. Angelo Mathews and Dasun Shanaka bring experience as seam-bowling all-rounders with captain Hasaranga and Dunith Wellalage as the spin-bowling all-rounders.

Maheesh Theekshana is expected to share spin duties with Hasaranga equally. Dilshan Madushanka’s bowling prowess in the Powerplay will be lethal to deal with Matheesha Pathirana to take care of the final overs with Dushmantha Chameera, and Nuwan Thushara completing the pace attack.

Squad:

Wanindu Hasaranga (c), Charith Asalanka, Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Kamindu Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, Dhananjaya De Silva, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Thushara, Matheesha Pathirana, Dilshan Madushanka. Traveling Reserves: Asitha Fernando, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and Janith Liyanage

Fixtures:

3 June: Sri Lanka vs South Africa, New York

7 June: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh, Dallas

11 June: Sri Lanka vs Nepal, Florida

16 June: Sri Lanka vs Netherlands, St. Lucia

Players to watch out for:

A bowler who can deliver every ball at over 145 kmph with a lethal yorker in his arsenal – Matheesha Pathirana will be a headache for most batters, especially in the death overs.

Pathirana’s recent exploits at the Indian Premier League (IPL) have added to his reputation as a dangerous pacer despite only having played six T20Is. In only six games for Chennai in IPL 2024, the death-specialist 13 wickets with an economy rate of 7.68.

Although he returned midway through the IPL season with a hamstring injury, Pathirana has been named in the squad and is expected to be fit in time.

Experienced Scott Edwards was on Monday named as the captain of the Netherlands for next month’s T20 World Cup, the Royal Dutch Cricket Association announced. The 27-year-old Edwards was elected the skipper despite his modest outings in the recent tri-series, involving hosts Nepal and Namibia. Overall, he has played 56 T20I for the Netherlands, scoring 671 runs at a strike-rate of 122. Indian-origin cricketers – Teja Nidamanuru, Vikram Singh and Aryan Dutt – are also part of the squad.

This is the third successive ICC showpiece event the Netherlands are participating after the T20 World Cup in 2022 and last year’s 50-over World Cup.

The Netherlands will play another tri-series at home alongside Ireland and Scotland between May 18 and 24 before flying out for their group matches which are spread across the USA and the West Indies.

Holland will begin their T20 World Cup campaign on June 4 against Nepal at Dallas and four days later will face formidable South Africa in New York.

Their last two group matches are against Bangladesh (June 13) and Sri Lanka (June 17), and those games will be played at St Vincent and St Lucia respectively.

The Netherlands squad: Scott Edwards (captain), Aryan Dutt, Bas de Leede, Daniel Doram, Fred Klaassen, Kyle Klein, Logan van Beek, Max O’Dowd, Michael Levitt, Paul van Meekeren, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Teja Nidamanuru, Tim Pringle, Vikram Singh and Wesley Barresi.

A plethora of records were broken as Australia crushed Netherlands by 309 runs during their World Cup contest in New Delhi on Wednesday. Glenn Maxwell’s fastest century in the tournament’s history, inarguably, was the highlight of the show. Batting first, the Australians amassed 399 for eight with hundreds from David Warner (104) and Maxwell (106) before spinner Adam Zampa’s four-for skittled the Dutch for 90 by the 21st over.

Below are some of the new records:

It is the biggest margin of win across all editions of World Cup and the second biggest in ODI history, besides being the biggest for Australia.

It is the highest total for Australia in a World Cup match in India and their second highest in the event overall.

Maxwell scored the fastest hundred in the competition’s history, reaching the landmark in just 40 balls to go past South African Aiden Markram’s previous record of 43 balls, which was also achieved in this edition.

Maxwell’s 40-ball effort is also the fastest century by an Australian in this format.

Maxwell is also the first Aussie to score 100-plus runs in the final ten overs of an ODI.

Maxwell struck eight sixes in his knock, which is the second most by an Australian in a World Cup match, along with Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting.

Maxwell and Pat Cummins added 107 runs for the seventh wicket, which is the highest for the side for the same or lower down the order in a World Cup innings.

Warner has become the fourth Australian player to score back-to-back centuries after Mark Waugh (1996), Ponting (2003-07) and Matthew Hayden (2007).

Warner (6) now also has the most World Cup centuries among Australians, going past Ponting (5) while joining India’s Sachin Tendulkar.

Warner has also become the fastest Australian to reach his 22nd ODI ton, in 153 innings, and is third in the global list, behind Hashim Amla (126) and Virat Kohli (143).

It is only the second time that two Aussie batters have scored tons in a World Cup innings, with the previous instance being in their last game of the competition against Pakistan.

Adam Zampa has scalped a four-wicket haul in his third consecutive World Cup tie, thus becoming the first Australian to do so.

Australian seamer Mitchell Starc is now on level terms with the legendary Wasim Akram in terms of getting maximum batters clean bowled (25).

Steven Smith (10) now has the second-most 50-plus scores in the World Cup for Australia after Ponting (11).

It is also the highest total by any side against the Dutch in the World Cup.

From the Netherlands’ perspective, it is their lowest total against Australia.

Bas de Leede’s spell of 2 for 115 is the most expensive in ODI history.

Also, De Leede has conceded 100-plus in the format on four instances this year, the joint most by a bowler in a year, alongside Jacob Duffy, Adam Zampa and Cameron Green.

Cricket World Cup: Netherlands’ Bas de Leede had a forgettable day against Australia.© AFP

It was a day of records at the Cricket World Cup 2023 on Wednesday. Glenn Maxwell smashed a 40-ball ton making him the fastest to reach the triple figure mark in Cricket World Cup history. However, the Australian star’s marauding form meant that Netherlands’ Bas de Leede registered an unwanted record to his name. He conceded the most runs in a 50-over innings during an ICC World Cup 2023 match against Australia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday. (World Cup 2023 points table)

de Leede had one of the worst days of his cricket career at the Arun Jaitley Stadium as the Netherlands all-rounder conceded 115 runs in his ten overs, setting the record for the poorest ODI bowling stats in history.

Bas de Leede was the last bowler introduced into the Netherlands’ attack by captain Scott Edwards during a match against Australia.

While de Leede took the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell humiliated him. After 10 overs, the Netherlands pacer completed with stats of 2/115. His economy rate was 11.5 runs per over.

Before the Netherlands all-rounder’s record, Australia’s Adam Zampa and Mick Lewis shared the world record. Zampa and Lewis both conceded 113 runs in 10 overs of different ODIs against South Africa in 2023 and 2006.

Talking about the match, David Warner smashed another immaculate century as Australia built a solid platform against Netherlands in the ICC World Cup before Glenn Maxwell unleashed the fastest hundred in the tournament’s history.

Maxwell’s century came from just 40 balls, nine faster than the previous best at a World Cup, and included eight maximums.

Top knocks by Warner, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Maxwell helped Australia post a mammoth total of 399/8 against the Netherlands.

The Netherlands and Sri Lanka face off against each other in match No. 19 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Saturday, October 21 at the Ekana Stadium, Lucknow. While the two teams take each other on the playing field, the fantasy cricket managers have a chance to pick their favourite players and form their teams. The performance of the players on the field will translate to points for each fantasy team picked, and the manager with the team with the most points stands a chance to win attractive prizes.

The Netherlands have had a terrific year so far, taking down some big teams en route to the ICC World Cup 2023. A cherry on top for them was their victory against South Africa courtesy of a terrific all-round performance. Skipper Scott Edwards was the star with the bat, who took the Netherlands to 245/8 in 43 overs. South Africa were bowled out for 207 runs, resulting in a 38-run win.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are the only team without a win in the tournament. Since their disastrous defeat against India in the Asia Cup final, they have been underwhelming on the field. Although a great batting performance against Pakistan propelled them to 344 runs batting first, they ended up losing that match by six wickets.

In their last match, they lost to Australia in another disappointing performance. The 1996 champions are in desperate need of a win to keep themselves in contention.

Predicted playing XI

Netherlands: Vikramjit Singh, Max O’Dowd, Colin Ackermann, Bas de Leede, Teja Nidamanuru, Scott Edwards (c & wk), Sybrand Engelbrecht, Logan van Beek, Roelof van der Merwe, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren

Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis (wk), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka (c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Lahiru Kumara, Matheesha Pathirana.

Weather conditions and pitch report

The weather conditions in Lucknow are going to be typically hot in the morning, but it will get cooler towards the end, with temperatures ranging from 18-31 degrees. The track here has assisted the spinners a lot and both sides will look to capitalise on it.

NED vs SL fantasy XI

Wicket-keepers: Kusal Mendis (wk), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Scott Edwards

Batters: Charith Asalanka, Pathum Nissanka, Vikramjit Singh

All-rounders: Bas de Leede

Bowlers: Paul van Meekeren, Roelof van der Merwe, Logan van Beek, Maheesh Theekshana

Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama have been two of Sri Lanka’s better batters this tournament, which is why we are going with three keepers in the team. Scott Edwards, who produced a match-winning performance last game, is the third keeper option.

Charith Asalanka has got a few starts and scored 105 runs in three matches so far. Pathum Nissanka and Vikramjit Singh are the other batting options.

Bas de Leede is the undisputed choice among all-rounders. He is Netherlands’ mainstay in the line-up

The Dutch bowling trio of Paul van Meekeren, Roelof van der Merwe and Logan van Beek are making great use of the slow bowling conditions and have picked up 13 wickets between themselves. Maheesh Theekshana is a good option from the Lankan bowling attack.

Captain: Bas de Leede

Bas de Leede’s ability to make match-winning contributions with bat and ball makes him the best option for captaincy. In the World Cup so far, he scored 87 runs and picked up seven wickets.

Vice-captain: Kusal Mendis

Kusal Mendis has been in top form this tournament and scored 207 runs in three matches, which includes a century and a half-century. Despite not getting a big score in the last match, he is a worthy contender for captaincy or vice-captaincy.

After Afghanistan’s historic win over defending champions England last week, minnows Netherlands also pulled off another upset in the ongoing World Cup on Tuesday as the Dutch stunned South Africa by 38 runs in a rain-reduced 43-overs-a-side contest in Dharamsala. Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards led from the front with an unbeaten 78 to steer his side to 245-8 before they bowled out third-placed South Africa for 207. During South Africa’s innings, the Dutch players were seen reading some instructions from a piece of paper.

A picture of the same has now gone viral on social media. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan congratulated the Netherlands on the historic win. However, Pathan also posted a cheeky comment, asking the Dutch players about the instructions written on the piece of paper.

“Netherlands many many congratulations on your historic win. You were disciplined throughout the game. Especially in bowling. Wo chitthi mein kya hai???,” Pathan posted on X (Twitter).

“This World Cup is throwing up interesting results! Was nice to see the Netherlands Captain Scott Edwards lead from the front with a fighting knock after they were 140/7 at one stage. What pleased me the most about them in the field was how they put the SA batters under pressure. A win and a night to remember for them!,” batting great Sachin Tendulkar also hailed the Dutch for throwing another upset.

Notably, Tuesday’s win wasn’t the first time they have shocked South Africa at a global event, having got the better of the Proteas at last year’s T20 World Cup.

The Australia-born Edwards was confident that his team could be any side in the tournament.

“I suppose we go into every game with our plans and our ways that we’re going to try and win the game,” Edwards told reporters after the win.

“For us, it’s just about playing our best brand of cricket and we feel like if we play well enough on the day, we can beat any side.”
