The court, however, ruled that the consumption of marijuana in public will continue to be prohibited.

Brasilia:

A majority of the justices on Brazil’s Supreme Court are in favor of decriminalizing the possession of marijuana for personal consumption, following a crucial vote on Tuesday.

“The position is clear that no user of any drug can be considered a criminal,” said Justice Dias Toffoli, the sixth judge on the 11-member top court to vote for decriminalization.

So far, three justices have opposed a decision to no longer make possession of cannabis a crime, including its most recent member, Cristiano Zanin, who was appointed by leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The consumption of marijuana in public will continue to be prohibited and cannabis remains illegal in Brazil.

Decriminalizing its use has been discussed by the Supreme Court since 2015 and the justices reached a majority at a time when politicians are proposing a constitutional ban on the use of illegal drugs.

A bill advancing in Congress, with the support of conservative and evangelical lawmakers, proposes amending the Constitution to make the use and possession of any kind of narcotics a criminal offense.

A lacklustre Brazil launched their Copa America campaign with a dour 0-0 draw against Costa Rica on Monday as James Rodriguez inspired Colombia to a 2-1 win over Paraguay. Brazil, chasing a 10th Copa America crown, dominated possession and territory in the Group D game at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles but struggled to break down a resolute Costa Rica side. The Brazilians thought they had taken the lead in the 30th minute after Marquinhos tapped in at the back post after a flick on by Rodrygo following a free-kick by Raphinha.

But after an agonising VAR delay, the goal was chalked off for a fractional offside decision as Costa Rica escaped.

That was as good as it got for Brazil, who laboured to break down Costa Rica’s defence for the remainder of the game, registering just three shots on target despite enjoying 73.5 percent possession.

Costa Rica were content to sit back, defending in numbers and rarely venturing forward with any purpose.

The Costa Ricans failed to have a single shot on goal for the entire game.

The result means Colombia finished the day on top of Group D after collecting all three points in their deserved win over Paraguay at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

World champions Argentina get an expanded Copa America under way on Thursday with Lionel Messi looking to add a second continental title in what is almost certainly his final appearance in the tournament. The 108-year-old competition is being held in the United States with the host nation among six teams from the CONCACAF region joining the 10 South American nations looking for a place in the July 14 final in Miami. While FIFA will be looking closely at the organization of the event, two years out from the World Cup which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, the tournament’s rich history and prestige means it is much, much more than a ‘trial event’.

Argentina have won the Copa 15 times but only once, in 2021, during the Messi era and coach Lionel Scaloni has stuck largely with his World Cup-winning squad, with veterans Angel Di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi likely taking their final bow in a major tournament.

Whether this is Messi’s goodbye to elite international football is yet to be seen – the eight-times Ballon d’Or winner, now playing in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, will turn 37 four days after Thursday’s opener in Atlanta against Canada and has yet to decide whether he will try to play in a record sixth World Cup.

“It’s great to have records and continue to achieve things but I won’t take part in a World Cup just to say I’ve done six,” Messi told ESPN last week.

“If I feel good and everything is in place for me to be there, fine, but I won’t go just to go. It’s very difficult to imagine what can happen because it’s still two years away. I don’t need to commit right now to whether or not I’ll be there,” he added.

What is certain is that Messi, who has managed his workload to try to be in peak condition for the tournament, would relish the chance to win a third straight major tournament with his country after so many years of frustration with his national team.

Tough opposition

After facing Canada, Argentina take on Chile in New Jersey before finishing their group A action against Peru in Miami but they know that tough opposition awaits in the knock-out stage with rivals Brazil and Uruguay the two expected challengers for the title.

Brazil have struggled in CONMEBOL qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup having won just two of their opening six games and they currently sit in sixth place in the standings having lost to Uruguay, Colombia and Argentina.

There are several familiar names missing from Dorival Junior’s Brazil squad with Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus and Thiago Silva left out while Richarlison and Neymar are both missing due to injury.

The pressure will be on the Real Madrid attacking pair of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo to translate their club form into success for the Selecao while there is much excitement around the senior tournament debut of 17-year-old talent Endrick, who is set to join Real next month from Palmeiras.

Uruguay, also 15-times winners, have impressed under their 68-year-old Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa, who has brought his trademark high-energy style to the team and raised expectations with recent wins over Argentina and Brazil.

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez will lead the line although Bielsa has the option of introducing veteran Luis Suarez from the bench.

Colombia head into the tournament without a loss in over two years and with Liverpool’s livewire winger Luis Diaz a constant threat and James Rodriguez enjoying a late career revival, Nestor Lorenzo’s team can’t be discounted.

The USA will hope that they can generate some sorely needed excitement after losing their way since a creditable run to the last-16 at the World Cup.

Coach Gregg Berhalter is under some pressure to show he can get his team, which relies on the smart wing play of Christian Pulisic, to compete with teams from outside of CONCACAF.

Mexico have guested frequently in the Copa in the past and reached the final in 1993 and 2001, but they look well below their usual level although they can, as always, count on huge support in the USA.

This is the second time the Copa America is being held in the USA, after the Centenary tournament in 2016, and while that is a break with tradition the presence of significant immigrant communities from all the competing nations, should ensure big crowds at the mostly NFL stadiums being used.

Brazilian football’s rich history has seen the team reach the very highest of highs of the sport but in recent times the sun has not shone as brightly as the Selecao have grown accustomed to. In a surprise turn of events, one of the greatest players to step onto a football pitch, Ronaldinho has slammed the team and announced that he will be ‘abandoning’ the side and not watch the national team anymore. “That’s it guys, that’s it for me. This is a sad moment for those who love Brazilian football. It’s difficult to find the energy to watch the games. This is perhaps one of the worst teams in recent years, it has no respectable leaders, just average players for the most part,” read the Instagram post by Ronaldinho.

The side which has made its mark on the game and are the most successful side in the history of the FIFA World Cup and has not won the trophy since their triumph in 2002. Their best finish in the tournament since their last World Cup win was the 2014 World Cup when they finished fourth after the infamous 7-1 defeat that they faced at the hands of Germany.

“I’ve been following football since I was a child, long before I thought about becoming a player, and I’ve never seen a situation as bad as this. The shirt lacks love, lacks determination, and most important of all: football.”

The team is currently in full-swing preparation for the CONMEBOL Copa America tournament scheduled to begin on Friday, June 21 (IST).

The side does consist of stars in the likes of Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo who are one of the most lethal attacking duos in the country and it will be interesting to see how the team responds when they take the pitch on June 25 against Costa Rica.

“I repeat: our performance has been one of the worst things I have ever seen. A shame. Therefore, I declare my abandonment here. I will not watch any CONMEBOL Copa América game, nor celebrate any victory,” concluded the veteran.

The Lamborghini suffered extensive damage in the incident.

A man in Brazilian city of Sao Paulo rammed his Lamborghini into a thief who stole his Rolex watch at gunpoint. According to CNN Brazil, the incident took place in the upscale region of Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima on Saturday, May 18. Videos of the incident appeared on social media and were widely circulated. The clip shows the green-coloured Lamborghini racing towards a two-wheeler – being driven by the thief – as he tries to escape. The thief, however, ran away.

Watch the video:

The outlet said that Lamborghini driver was approached by the thief on a motorcycle while he had stopped the vehicle at a traffic light. He forcefully took the lavish timepiece and tried to run away from the scene.

Soon, the traffic started moving and the Lamborghini driver decided to chase the man on the two-wheeler, as seen in the video. The car is seen speeding up to catch with the escaping biker.

As the robber attempts to make an illegal left-hand turn, the furious Lamborghini owner steps on the gas pedal and ploughs into his motorbike.

The supercar then smashes into a pole, sending the traffic lights to topple to the ground.

Luckily, the robber survives and is seen quickly getting back to his feet and dashing away from the crash scene, abandoning his wrecked motorcycle.

Brazilian outlet Metropoles said the watch was valued at Brazilian real 200,000 ($40,000 or Rs 32 lakh) and the man suspected of stealing it has been identified.

Quoting local police, the outlet said that the man lives in Taboao da Serra and was using a motorcycle registered in his mother’s name.

While running away from the site of the crash, he left a 32-caliber revolver used in the robbery and a cellphone, which helped investigators identify him.

Brasilia:

Twelve people including a baby died Sunday in a small plane crash in the Brazilian Amazon, officials said.

The plane, a single engine Cessna Caravan, came down near the airport of Rio Branco shortly after takeoff, the government of the northwestern state of Acre said in a statement.

Ten passengers — nine adults and an infant — as well as the pilot and co-pilot all died at the scene, it said.

According to local press reports, the plane erupted in flames on impact, causing a forest fire in a remote area near Brazil’s border with Peru and Bolivia.

Many of the passengers were returning to the neighboring Amazonas state after receiving medical care, media said.

Fourteen people were killed in September when a plane crashed while trying to land during a storm in the Amazonas town of Barcelos.

And in June, four Indigenous children survived a plane crash in the Colombian Amazon, then managed to stay alive for 40 days in the jungle before being rescued in a massive search.

Brazil’s President announced on Friday that he will partially veto a bill restricting Indigenous groups’ claims to ancestral lands, overriding Congress’s recent approval of the legislation.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will veto a core stipulation of the bill which would have only recognised Indigenous peoples’ right to claim territories they occupied or were legally disputing in October 1988, when the constitution was ratified, Minister of Institutional Relations Alexandre Padilha announced.

The land rights legislation, backed by the powerful agribusiness sector, is seen by some critics as an effort to counteract Mr. Lula’s efforts to bolster environmental and Indigenous land protections, after his campaign pledge to demarcate new tribal territories.

Mr. Padilha said that the president’s veto would be partial and not total as Indigenous movements had requested, with the rest of the bill signed into law.

“Everything that attacked the rights of Indigenous peoples, and which contradicted the constitution, and the recent decisions of the court, were vetoed,” Mr. Padilha said.

The bill drew backlash with its 1988 “time-frame argument”, or Marco Temporal thesis, which was pushed by the country’s powerful farm lobby. Indigenous groups filed a lawsuit arguing that many people had been forced from their ancestral lands, including during the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil from the 1960s to 1980s.

The Supreme Court sided with the Indigenous activists and climate campaigners last month.

But days later, Congress approved the legislation, in conflict with the court’s ruling.

The president’s veto will take effect after publication in the official gazette, and will be analyzed by Congress, which could still reverse it, setting up another Supreme Court challenge.

Sonia Guajajara, Brazil’s first Indigenous Affairs Minister, who was appointed by Mr. Lula, called the President’s move “a great victory”.

“Vetoing the time frame reaffirms the Supreme Court’s decision, guaranteeing the government’s coherence with the Indigenous, environmental and international agenda,” she said.

Many environmentalists consider the establishment of state-protected Indigenous reserves one of the best ways to fight deforestation and, with it, climate change.

According to data from Funai, a government entity that defends Indigenous populations, the reserves occupy 13.75 percent of the country’s territory.

Indigenous people make up 1.7 million of Brazil’s 203 million inhabitants.

Football superstar Neymar has a torn ligament and meniscus in his left knee and will have to undergo surgery after being injured during Brazil’s 2-0 loss to Uruguay, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said Wednesday. The 31-year-old, who joined Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain in August, was stretchered off in tears just before halftime in Brazil’s 2026 World Cup qualifying match in Montevideo Tuesday. Neymar will undergo surgery for the injuries at a “yet-to-be-determined date,” the CBF said, after a series of medical exams on the player in Sao Paulo.

“Brazilian and world football need Neymar healthy and recovered, because football is happier when he’s on the pitch,” CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues said in a statement.

The CBF said its medical department and Al Hilal are in “constant contact” and “aligned” on helping the striker recover.

Neymar, who overtook Pele as Brazil’s all-time top goal scorer last month, twisted his knee in a collision with Uruguayan midfielder Nicolas de la Cruz in stoppage time near the end of the first half.

Carried off on a stretcher, he left the stadium on crutches and wearing a leg brace after the match.

It is the latest in a string of injuries for the star, who underwent surgery in March for an ankle problem that sidelined him for six months.

Fitness problems overshadowed much of his six seasons at PSG, which signed him for a world-record $234 million (222 million euros) in 2017.

He signed for Al Hilal for a reported $95 million in August.

Knee injuries are among the most common — and serious — in football.

The CBF said Neymar’s injury was to his anterior cruciate ligament, one of the worst of all.

Surgery to repair the condition often takes players out of action for months.

A Brazilian congressional committee found on Tuesday former President Jair Bolsonaro should face charges of an attempted coup for his supporters’ invasion of the Presidential palace, Supreme Court and legislative headquarters in January.

The committee investigating the January 8 riots in the capital Brasilia wrapped up nearly five months of drama-filled hearings with a final report recommending prosecutors also charge the far-right ex-President with attempting to overthrow the rule of law, political violence and criminal conspiracy.

The report does not legally bind the prosecutor general’s office to act. But it is the latest in a raft of legal woes for Mr. Bolsonaro, 68, who is already under investigation for various allegations of corruption and abuse of office.

Mr. Bolsonaro — who was president between 2019 and 2022 — was also barred in June from running for election for eight years, over his unproven fraud allegations against Brazil’s electronic voting system.

The January 8 riots deeply shook Brazil, as thousands of Bolsonaro supporters overwhelmed security and trashed the halls of power, calling on the military to oust President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The riots drew inevitable comparisons to the 2021 US Capitol invasion by supporters of Donald Trump, Mr. Bolsonaro’s political role model.

Mr. Bolsonaro, who lost to veteran leftist Lula in a divisive election in October 2022, was in the United States at the time, having snubbed his arch-rival’s inauguration one week before.

But the report by the joint lower house and Senate committee found Bolsonaro instigated his supporters’ actions.

Before leaving office, the ex-President “used the apparatus of the state in any way he could to achieve his greatest aim: erode Brazil’s institutions to the point of total destruction and remain in power,” said Senator Eliziane Gama, reading the report.

The more than 1,300-page report also called on prosecutors to charge military officers including Mr. Bolsonaro’s ex-Defence Minister, General Paulo Sergio Nogueira de Oliveira, and the former Navy and Army commanders.

The riots were part of a “premeditated coup attempt” that aimed to “destabilize the government, ignite the country, and sow chaos and, if necessary, a civil war,” it said.

The committee is due to vote on Wednesday on adopting the report. Its passage is virtually certain, given that Mr. Lula’s coalition holds a majority on the 32-member committee.

In a separate case on Tuesday, the Supreme Electoral Court acquitted Mr. Bolsonaro on charges of abuse of political power.

He has been accused of delivering an electoral speech from the Presidential palace during the 2022 campaign.

The seven judges considered that “it has not been proven that the transmission took place within the Planalto Palace, nor that the services of a sign language interpreter paid for by the state were used,” the court said on its website.

It also acquitted Mr. Bolsonaro’s running mate Walter Braga Netto.

Wearing his infectious goofy grin, ‘Samba Magician’ Ronaldinho cast a spell on the football-crazy denizens of Kolkata as his arrival for a two-day visit in Kolkata ushered in an early onset of the Durga Puja festival. The Durga Puja, the grandest festival in the region, traditionally commences on the sixth day (Shasthi) following Mahalaya, but it got rolling on the second day itself with the ‘Gaucho’ inaugurating a series of pandals. On a day Union Home Minister Amit Shah also came to inaugurate a Durga Puja pandal, it was the Brazil legend who took all the limelight. Wherever he went, chants of ‘Ronaldinho, Ronaldinho’ and ‘Brazil, Brazil’ echoed through the crowd, as hundreds of fans eagerly gathered to catch a glimpse of the former Barcelona and AC Milan star.

Ronaldinho got himself dressed up in casual shorts, a loosely-fitted navy blue T-shirt, and topping it with his signature snapback cap.

“Muchas gracias. Mucho carino (many thanks, much affection),” the ‘King of Jogo Bonito’ conveyed with ‘I Love You’ gesture with his goofy smile captivating his fans who followed him everywhere he went.

The 43-year-old Brazilian great, who checked in late on Sunday, defied jetlag and began his day heading to inaugurate his academy — “R10” — at Merlin Rise residential complex on the eastern suburbs.

Hundreds of kids of various age groups gathered at the academy to catch a glimpse of their favourite Brazilian star, who shot himself into limelight with his extraordinary dribbling skills, close ball control, and creativity on the field during their 2002 World Cup triumph, the last one for the five-time champions.

A giant screen on the backdrop of the stage showed Ronaldinho’s magical football moments, including his spectacular long-range free-kick that virtually ended England’s fate in the 2002 World Cup quarterfinal.

His next destination was in north Kolkata, where he inaugurated a Durga Puja pandal designed around a Disneyland theme. Ronaldinho got a traditional Hindu welcome, with a tilak on forehead as he showed curiosity, exploring the pandal while inquiring about the rituals.

Ronaldinho also paid floral tributes to a statue of Argentine icon Diego Maradona who also had enthralled Kolkata’s football fans during his twin visits in 2008 and 2017.

Calling on Mamata Banerjee was the next on Ronaldinho’s agenda, as he headed to the West Bengal chief minister’s residence in Kalighat where officials of the ‘Big Three’ clubs — Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting — welcomed him.

“The CM briefed him about the clubs’ century-old legacies, and he appeared deeply engrossed. The CM also requested him to consider sending more Brazilian players to Kolkata to elevate the standards of the game. We all presented him with club jerseys,” East Bengal’s top official, Nitu Sarkar, told PTI.

Ronaldinho also met with East Bengal sponsors later in the day.

The Brazilian then took part in an official trophy handing ceremony of the Calcutta Football League Premier Division tournament, crowning Mohammedan Sporting champions at the Indian Football Association.

There were more Durga Puja pandal inauguration, this time crisscrossing the city extending to the southern suburbs in Narendrapur and Baruipur, but Ronaldinho remained high in spirits and obliged his fans at every stop.

More excitement is in store for his fans on Tuesday as well as the Brazilian is expected to weave his ‘Samba Magic’ during an exhibition match at the south-western suburb of Maheshtala in the afternoon.
