After replacing Rahul Dravid at the helm of Indian cricket, Gautam Gambhir will make his much-awaited debut as head coach of the team during the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. BCCI announced Gambhir as head coach earlier this month after Dravid’s tenure came to an end, following Team India’s T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados. Ahead of Gambhir’s debut tour, former Australia pacer Brett Lee shared his views on the appointment of the former India opener as head coach. Lee pointed out that just like his playing days, Gambhir will bring an aggressive and winning mindset to the Indian team.

The legendary pacer also congratulated Dravid on a successful stint as head coach.

“He’s (Gautam Gambhir) done a terrific job every time he’s had an opportunity. The Indian Premier League title with KKR is the best example. He’s always been there, always at the top of his game. He finds a way to unite his players and graft his team together. He builds a solid structure. He has been a terrific player, and his aggression and winning attitude will help India. He has shone internationally as a player. India is in safe hands with Gautam Gambhir as coach. Congratulations to Rahul for finishing on a high,” Lee told Times of India.

On being asked to rate India captain Rohit Sharma‘s leadership during the T20 World Cup, Lee said: “Big, big congratulations to India. Firstly, it was really good to see them and the emotion on the faces of those cricketers. Virat and Rohit have moved on from the game. There were players from the Australian cricket team who also hung up their boots. So, it was a swansong for a number of players from different countries around the world. One thing I will say is that India played the perfect style of cricket in the T20 World Cup. They looked like a strong side, to be very honest. Massive congratulations to Rohit Sharma and the Indian team. He led from the front in the tournament.”

India will play three T20Is and as many ODIs against Sri Lanka, starting July 26. Both Rohit and Virat Kohli are likely to be rested for the tour.

One of the fiercest fast bowlers of his generation, Australia’s Brett Lee has heaped praises on Indian star ace Jasprit Bumrah claiming he is the ‘best’ bowler in all three formats at the moment. “Their batting order, which includes players who can dominate at every position from top to bottom, speaks volumes. Their middle-order is loaded with power and they have hitters who can put runs on the board quickly. In my opinion, Jasprit Bumrah is simply exceptional,” said Lee.

Bumrah’s performance at the 2024 T20 World Cup further cemented his bid to be one of the best bowlers in all three formats of the game. The 30-year-old was named as Player of the Tournament for his amazing effort throughout the campaign which saw him collect 15 wickets at an average of 8.26. Bumrah finished with an economy of just 4.17.

“He is the best bowler in all formats right now and leads the attack. Bumrah can keep up an amazing pace while shaping the new ball away. His tournament performance demonstrated his leadership abilities, taking about 15 wickets with remarkable economy. He is absolutely exceptional, and India is deserving of praise for their accomplishments,” added the former Aussie pacer.

Lee is currently at the World Championship of Legends and is captain of the Australia Legends squad.

After a thrilling victory over India in the World Championship’s first season, the Australian Legends will now advance to the semifinals. It is enough to say that the Australia Champions are one of the most formidable teams right now because of the involvement of legends like Dan Christian and Brett Lee who have driven the team and seized every opportunity along the way.

Taking time from his busy practice schedule, the former Australian pace bowler Brett Lee added props for his country’s team’s performance after their first loss against Pakistan.

“It’s obviously been a wonderful week for us. After our loss against Pakistan and then to have three wins in the tournament is fantastic. So, we are starting to find some form,” he said.

Only Bumrah is executing yorkers consistently: Lee https://artifexnews.net/article68230042-ece/ Wed, 29 May 2024 17:23:20 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/article68230042-ece/ Read More “Only Bumrah is executing yorkers consistently: Lee” »

Legendary Australia speedster Brett Lee feels apart from Jasprit Bumrah, pacers are failing to nail yorkers effectively in the death overs and he wants them to master the pivotal delivery.

Bumrah is one of the most complete bowlers in world cricket at the moment. He can bowl wicket-taking deliveries without leaking runs but the most lethal weapon in his armoury is his toe-crushing yorker, which he, more often that not, executes perfectly in the death overs.

“On a general rule, other than Bumrah, we haven’t seen enough fast bowlers nailing their yorkers recently.

“I want to see fast bowlers bowl more yorkers. I still don’t reckon they execute enough yorkers at the death,” Lee said at the launch of the Legends Intercontinental T20 league recently.

With the recently concluded IPL featuring scores in excess of 200 regularly, Lee believes the fast bowlers would be more economical had they nailed yorkers.

“If you look back at 17 years of Indian Premier League, on average a yorker goes for a strike rate of less than 100. Which tells me that one run or less per bowler that’s executed.

“Now, when you bowl a yorker and you’ve got guys who can go down and scoop you over the head, well that puts pressure on you as a bowler.

“You’ve got to set in the right field and put two men back, third man fine and back and then bowl,” Lee added.

As T20 cricket progresses, the game is tilting more and more towards the batters. With the ‘Impact Player Rule’ and flat decks, bowlers struggled in the IPL.

Lee, like several other former players, called for a balance between bat and ball.

“I’m all for batters smoking the ball all over, but there has got to be something for the bowlers too. I’m not asking for a green top, where teams bowled out for 110, because that’s not good for cricket either.

“You want a good total, I think. Anywhere around that 185 mark to 230 is a good score. We’ve seen scores now of 265, 270, 277.

“It’s really hard because most bowlers now are going for 45 to 50 off their four overs.” he said.

‘Warner has earned the right to go on his own terms’

Australia’s charismatic young batter Jake Fraser-McGurk set the stage ablaze in his debut IPL season with many calling for his inclusion in Australia’s T20 World Cup squad.

However, the selectors decided to go with veteran opener David Warner, who is set to retire after the tournament, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh in the top-order.

McGurk, who is a top order batter and Warner’s Delhi Capitals teammate, though has been named as a travelling reserve.

“David Warner has earned that right to go out on his own terms. And if things don’t happen for whatever reason, then he’s (McGurk) definitely there to take part,” Lee said.

Although Warner did not have a particularly great IPL as he missed several matches due to an injury, the Southpaw has scored 834 runs in T20 cricket since 2021 at a strike rate of around 150.

He was woefully out of form ahead of the 2021 T20 World Cup but ended up being the player of the tournament, playing a vital role in Australia’s maiden World Cup win in the shortest format.

On the other hand, 22-year-old McGurk, who was called in as a replacement for Lungi Ngidi at Delhi Capitals, gave an excellent display of explosive batsmanship, smashing four half-centuries in nine games at an astronomical strike rate exceeding 234.

“I think if you go over there as a reserve batsman, you definitely have a chance to get an opportunity.

“That happened this year with the Delhi Capitals, he wasn’t even picked in the squad.

“Ricky Ponting rang him up late night and said come in and had a few injuries. So right time, right place.

“But the advice to him, and he articulated it beautifully to say that he’s only 22 years of age (araam se araam se) . He’s got time. There’s no point rushing it,” Lee said.
