Gus Atkinson scored a dashing maiden century before England strengthened their grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s on Friday. Atkinson’s sparkling 118 helped take England to 427 all out in their first innings after Joe Root had made a masterful 143 on Thursday to equal the England record of 33 Test hundreds held by Alastair Cook. Sri Lanka then collapsed to 87-6 on the second day. But Kamindu Mendis, fresh from a fine 113 in Sri Lanka’s five-wicket loss in the first Test at Old Trafford, made an admirable 74 to prevent complete humiliation before he was last man out in a total of 196.

All of England’s pace attack took two wickets each, Matthew Potts returning figures of 2-19 in 11 overs and Chris Woakes 2-21 in 13.

Sri Lanka were 231 runs behind but stand-in England captain Ollie Pope did not enforce the follow-on, with the hosts 25-1 in their second innings at stumps — an overall lead of 256 as they looked to go 2-0 up in a three-match series.

Ben Duckett was 15 not out with Pope, having managed just three single figure scores since replacing the injured Ben Stokes as skipper, two not out after deciding against shielding himself from the new ball with a nightwatchman.

But the day belonged to Atkinson as he cemented his love affair with Lord’s.

The 26-year-old, whose previous highest first-class score was 91 for Surrey against a Sri Lanka Development XI in 2022, only made his Test debut against the West Indies, also at Lord’s, last month.

Atkinson marked that occasion with 12 wickets (7-45 and 5-61) to etch his name on the famed Lord’s dressing room honours boards reserved for bowlers who take five or more wickets in a Test innings and 10 or more in a match.

Few would have backed Atkinson to get on the equivalent honours board recognising those who score Test hundreds at the ‘Home of Cricket’ — a feat that proved beyond such star batsmen as India’s Sachin Tendulkar, West Indies’ Brian Lara and Australia’s Ricky Ponting.

Atkinson was 74 not out overnight in a Thursday stumps total of 358-7.

No 8 Atkinson carried on from where he left off, hitting two fours off Friday’s first two balls, as he leg-glanced and cover-drove paceman Lahiru Kumara leg-glanced for a pair of textbook boundaries.

But to the third he was given out lbw, only for Australian umpire Paul Reiffel’s decision to be reversed by a review indicating the ball would have missed leg stump.

Atkinson went to his century in storybook fashion, driving Kumara down the ground into the pavilion for another four — his 11th in a century completed in just 103 balls and also featuring four sixes.

A spectacular innings came to a spectacular end when Atkinson mistimed a pull off an Asitha Fernando bouncer and was brilliantly caught by a diving Milan Rathnayake as he launched himself towards the rope.

Atkinson walked off to a rousing reception, having faced just 115 balls.

Fernando ended the innings by dismissing Olly Stone to secure his place on the honours boards with a return of 5-102 in 21 overs.

Sri Lanka openers Nishan Madushka and Dimuth Karunaratne then both played on for seven before wickets continued to tumble.

But in-form left-hander Mendis, again batting curiously low in the order at No 7, hooked three sixes off recalled quick Stone, the last injuring an MCC member in the pavilion, during a 120-ball innings also featuring eight fours.

Dropped on 62 when Root floored a routine chance in the deep, the 25-year-old eventually holed out off Atkinson to round off a memorable day for the fast bowler.

England all-rounder Chris Woakes revealed Friday he was mourning the death of his father as he explained his recent absence from cricket. The 35-year-old did not feature for the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League and, at the end of April was left out of reigning champions England’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Warwickshire favourite Woakes, in a social media post, wrote: “The last month has been the most challenging of my life when unfortunately my dad passed away at the beginning of May.

“I’ve spent the last few weeks with the people most important to me, my family. We’re all obviously grieving and trying to get through what is undoubtedly the hardest moment in our lives. It’s times like this that perspective is at its greatest.”

Woakes, who helped England win the 2019 50-over World Cup, added: “I will be back playing cricket for Warwickshire, who my dad loved dearly, when the time is right for me and my family.

“I know playing cricket for Warwickshire and England made my dad incredibly proud. I look forward to doing that again in the near future.”

Woakes has made over 200 appearances for England across all three international formats, with his tally including 48 Test caps.

After the T20 World Cup, England will be back in red-ball mode with the first of a three-Test series against the West Indies starting at Lord’s on July 10.

World Cup 2023 – “Hard To Knock India Off Their Perch”: England’s Chris Woakes https://artifexnews.net/world-cup-2023-hard-to-knock-india-off-their-perch-englands-chris-woakes-4477422/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 09:15:19 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/world-cup-2023-hard-to-knock-india-off-their-perch-englands-chris-woakes-4477422/ Read More “World Cup 2023 – “Hard To Knock India Off Their Perch”: England’s Chris Woakes” »

England all-rounder Chris Woakes feels that home advantage definitely makes things easier and favourable for India in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup but his side is motivated to “knock them off their perch”. Defending champions England will be playing their third WC match against Afghanistan in Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. After a nine-wicket defeat to 2019 finalists New Zealand in the tournament opener, England got back on track with a 137-run win over Bangladesh.

India and England will square off on October 29 at Lucknow.

The last three editions of the World Cup have been won by hosts, starting with India lifting the WC in 2011 at Mumbai, followed by Australia’s triumph at Melbourne in 2015 and then England’s win at Lord’s in 2019.

“It is an incredibly tough challenge to win in India. Naturally, I think the sub-continental teams will feel more at home with the conditions,” he said as quoted by Sky Sports.

“That makes it extremely hard for us to knock them off their perch, so to speak. But we have got the squad and the players to be able to compete. People have looked at us for a while and we have had a little bit of a target on our back as a white-ball team, around the world.”

“It is a tough competition to win is not it? Especially here. But we will give it a good crack. We are taking it each game as it comes. Naturally, people have got expectations of us and we have certainly got our own expectations of ourselves,” concluded Woakes.

India have started as favourites, with two thumping wins over Australia and Afghanistan. Be it top order, middle order, fine pace or spin attack, Men In Blue has ticked off every box since their Asia Cup win recently for the eighth time.

In the match against NZ, Woakes went wicketless in his six overs, leaking 45 runs, but took two wickets against Bangladesh, of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Litton Das.

Woakes is eager to continue his upward trajectory.

“It is the start of a long tournament,” he said.

“I certainly feel that I would have liked to have bowled a little bit better but they are long competitions and you do not want to peak too soon, I suppose.”

“I have built into tournaments in the past and into series, which I suppose holds me in good stead moving forward. But you contribute every time you go out in the field so I will be working hard in practice to try and make sure that I’m on the money when I get the opportunity,” he concluded.

England squad: Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.
