Dawid Malan, England’s former world No. 1 T20I batter, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 37. The left-handed batter announced his decision in an interview with British Daily ‘The Times’, following his omission from the upcoming white-ball series against Australia. Malan is one of only two England men’s players, alongside Jos Buttler, to have scored centuries in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. Despite this remarkable achievement, Malan had not featured for England since last year’s 50-over World Cup in India.

“Test cricket was always the pinnacle for me growing up. At times I played well but in between just wasn’t good enough or consistent enough, which was disappointing because I felt I was a better player than that. Then again, I exceeded all expectations of myself in white-ball formats.

“I took all three formats extremely seriously but the intensity of Test cricket was something else: five days plus the days building up. I’m a big trainer; I love hitting lots of balls and I’d train hard in the build-up, and then the days were long and intense. You can’t switch off. I found it very mentally draining, especially the long Test series that I played, where my performances dropped off from the third or fourth Test onwards,” Malan told The Times.

In his career, Malan, who will turn 37 next month, played 22 Tests, 30 ODIs and 62 T20Is and scored 4416 runs.

He burst onto the international scene in 2017 with a stunning T20I debut against South Africa, where he scored a free-flowing 78 from just 44 balls. However, it was during the Ashes tour of 2017-18 that he made his mark in Test cricket, scoring a resilient 140 in Perth in partnership with Jonny Bairstow.

In the T20I format, Malan truly came into his own, especially after England’s ODI World Cup triumph in 2019. He forced his way into England’s T20 plans through sheer weight of runs, including a record-breaking 48-ball century against New Zealand in Napier. His consistent performances saw him rise to the top of the ICC’s T20I batting rankings in September 2020, and by March 2021, he became the fastest men’s player to reach 1,000 T20I runs, doing so in just 24 innings.

His prowess in the shortest format was further underscored when he played a crucial role in England’s T20 World Cup victory in Australia in 2022, though he missed the knockout stages due to a groin injury.

Jasprit Bumrah Rattles England In Cricket World Cup 2023 Thriller – Watch” »

Indian cricket team fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets in two balls to leave England reeling during their Cricket World Cup 2023 match in Lucknow on Sunday. Bumrah struck on the fifth ball of the fifth over as Dawid Malan ended up chopping a delivery directly on to his stumps. It was a big wicket for India who were not able to post a big total and the passion was clear from Bumrah’s expressions. The fast bowler struck once again on the very next delivery as Joe Root was trapped LBW on a in-swinging ball that left the experienced batter completely perplexed.

England bowlers led by David Willey kept India down to 229-9 despite skipper Rohit Sharma’s 87.

Willey, a left-arm quick, returned figures of 3-45, including the prized wicket of Virat Kohli for a nine-ball duck, after England elected to bowl at Lucknow in search of a victory to cling on to their slim hopes of making the semi-finals.

Fast bowler Chris Woakes and leg-spinner Adil Rashid picked up two wickets each and a spirited performance by the fielders, who threw themselves around to stop runs, made England look a like a different side.

The 2019 champions sit bottom of the 10-team table with four defeats from five matches.

“I missed my lengths early in the tournament, and I’m my own biggest critic,” Woakes said in the innings break.

“Fielding set the tone for us. It took a bit of spin, and it’s a bit two-paced, but hopefully under lights it’ll slide on. But we’d have taken that at the start. Hopefully we can bat well and chase it down.”

Suryakumar Yadav made a fighting 49 before becoming Willey’s third wicket but the tail played out the full 50 overs.

The unbeaten hosts lost three early wickets to slip to 40-3 before Rohit steadied the innings and attempted to hit back in a 91-run stand with KL Rahul, who made 39.

Rohit survived a reprieve on 33 when he was given out lbw off Mark Wood but the opener reviewed the decision in his favour with tracking showing the ball would have missed the leg stump.

Rohit reached his second fifty of the tournament — he also hit a century against Afghanistan — to the noisy delight of the nearly-packed 50,000-seater stadium.

Rohit and Rahul, who was returning to his IPL home ground where he suffered a serious injury earlier this year, kept the score ticking before Willey broke the stand with Rahul’s wicket.

Rohit kept up the fight but fell to Adil Rashid’s leg spin after he holed out to deep mid-wicket where Liam Livingstone took a low catch.

The fielder, however, injured his knee after his leg jarred in the surface. Livingstone got back on his feet after getting medical attention.

Kohli, who endured his 16th duck in ODIs, remains one century away from equalling all-time great Sachin Tendulkar‘s record of 49 hundreds in the 50-over format.

Former captain Kohli has been in good form at this World Cup, scoring 354 runs in six matches.

Woakes struck first as he bowled opener Shubman Gill for nine in the fourth over and soon grabbed one more to send Shreyas Iyer back to the pavilion for four.

Afghanistan pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the history of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup after they beat defending champions England by 69 runs in Delhi on Sunday. Afghanistan thus registered their first win over England in One-Day Internationals. Flamboyant opening batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit a blistering 80 as Afghanistan, buoyed by some lusty late hitting, made 284 batting first. In reply, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman bagged three wickets a to help Afghanistan roll over England on a total of 215.

While this was Afghanistan’s first win in the ongoing tournament after two losses, England slumped to their second defeat from three games.

Rashid Khan (3/37) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (3/51) were the pick of the Afghan bowlers.

Harry Brook (66 off 61) was the only shining light in what was a dismal batting display from England.

Credit should also go to former England batter Jonathan Trott, who is the present Afghanistan coach, for having played a key role in the team’s rise.

England did not have the best of starts to their chase with Fazalhaq Farooqi inflicting an early blow in the form of Jonny Bairstow, who was caught plumb in front of the wicket in the second over.

Farooqi generated pace and troubled the English batters in the beginning.

The Kotla pitch also had something for the spinners as the ball kept low and turned under lights.

The in-form Joe Root, who had scored back-to-back fifties, was done in by a Mujeeb delivery that kept low and crashed onto the stumps.

Dawis Malan played cautiously for his 32 off 39 balls before handing a simple catch to Ibrahim Zadran at short extra cover off Mohammad Nabi, as England stuttered to 68 for 3.

England completely failed to judge the pitch as their decision to bowl first backfired with the pitch offering enough assistance to the bowlers in the second session.

Skipper Jos Buttler also failed to rescue his side as he was cleaned up by Naveen-ul-Haq with a delivery that came in after pitching.

England continued to lose wickets in regular intervals as Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran and Chris Woakes also failed with the bat.

Earlier, opener Gurbaz gave the Afghans a flying start, scoring 80 off 57 balls, while number 6 batter Alikhil made a solid 58 off 66 deliveries, as Afghanistan recovered from a mid-innings collapse to post a good total.

Off-colour in the first two matches, Afghanistan openers — Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran (28) — rose to the occasion, scoring the team’s 50 in just 6.3 overs.

The Afghan openers meant business and played copybook shots to score their runs. The duo didn’t take too many risks and Gurbaz mainly ruled the roost, taking the attack to the English bowlers.

He played all around the park and his shots through the covers and flicks were a treat to watch.

With Afghanistan scoring runs thick and fast, Buttler introduced Adil Rashid (3/42) in the 11th over but Gurbaz was in a relentless mood as he swept the leg-spinner for a boundary to bring up his fifty in just 33 balls.

Gurbaz looked in ominous form as he dispatched Rashid over deep midwicket to bring up Afghanistan’s 100 in just 76 deliveries.

England tasted their first success in the 17th over when an under-pressure Zadran (28 off 48 balls) gave a simple catch to Root at short mid wicket but not before adding 114 runs for the opening wicket.

England got back into the game an over later with back-to-back wickets.

First Rashid dismissed Rahmat Shah, stumped by Buttler and then in the very next ball Afghanistan suffered a big blow in the form of Gurbaz, who became a victim of an unnecessary run out.

Gurbaz decorated his innings with eight boundaries and four sixes.

Following Gurbaz’s dismissal, runs started to dry up for Afghanistan as skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai looked to revive the innings.

Omarzai tried to break the shackles in the 25th over, clobbering Chris Woakes for a six and four.

But Omarzai departed in the next over, slicing a Livingstone delivery to Woakes at long off as Afghanistan lost four wickets for just 38 runs.

Shahidi too didn’t last long, bowled by Root with the Afghan skipper caught in two minds.

Veteran Nabi also departed as the Afghans slumped to 190 for 6 from a commanding position.

Alikhil, then, played a fine knock and decorated his innings with three fours and two sixes to prop up his team.

Dawid Malan bludgeoned 140 before Reece Topley destroyed the Bangladesh top order on Tuesday as England bounced back from their mauling by New Zealand in their World Cup opener. In-form Malan belted five sixes in his career-best one-day international score and Topley took 4-43 as the defending champions won by 137 runs after piling up 364-9 in Dharamsala. The total could have been even higher but England subsided from 296-2 in the 40th over due to some disciplined bowling by paceman Shoriful Islam and off-spinner Mahedi Hasan, who took seven wickets between them.

Bangladesh shot out of the blocks, with Liton Das hitting three consecutive fours off the first over bowled by Chris Woakes.

But they were quickly reduced to 14-2, with Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto unable to cope with the pace and movement of the towering Topley, who replaced Moeen Ali in the side.

That became 26-3 when captain Shakib Al Hasan was bowled by the paceman and the expensive Woakes then got in on the act, enticing an edge from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, with England captain Jos Buttler taking the catch behind the stumps.

Despite the carnage, Liton looked untroubled at the other end, reaching his fifty off 38 balls as Bangladesh tried to rebuild.

But his fine innings came to an end in the 21st over when he edged a slower ball from Woakes behind to Buttler and departed for 76.

Topley celebrated his fourth wicket when Mushfiquir Rahim (51) slashed him to deep third man, into the safe hands of Adil Rashid.

As the run rate climbed the result looked increasingly inevitable and the game ceased to be a meaningful contest, petering out despite some late hitting.

Malan stars

Earlier Malan, who has displaced Jason Roy at the top of the order, hit his fourth ODI century in 2023 in an impressive show of timing and power at the picturesque Himalayan ground.

His opening partner, Jonny Bairstow, reached a half-century in his 100th ODI but was bowled by Shakib for 52 to leave England 115-1 in the 18th over.

Former Test captain Joe Root picked up where Bairstow left off, signalling his intent with a ramp shot for six.

Malan, 36, reached a stylish century in 91 balls before cutting loose in devastating fashion, smashing 20 runs off just four balls during a Mehidy over.

Bangladesh, who beat Afghanistan in their opening match in India, finally got the breakthrough they desperately needed when Mahedi bowled Malan.

Buttler, with Ben Stokes still out injured, promoted himself up the order and briefly flickered before departing for 20 off 10 balls.

Root, who is now England’s all-time top-scorer at World Cups, overtaking Graham Gooch, holed out for 82, top-edging a Shoriful ball that was caught by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur.

Then Liam Livingstone had his off-stump flattened first ball as England lost momentum.

Wickets kept tumbling — Shoriful finished with figures of 3-75 and Mahedi took 4-71 — but the total proved well beyond Bangladesh.

The 10 teams at the World Cup play every other side once in a single round-robin format, with the top four teams progressing to the semi-finals.

Defending champions England’s nine-wicket loss to New Zealand in their World Cup opener would have given Jos Butter the jitters, and the skipper would like his teammates to make a strong comeback when they take on Bangladesh in Dharamshala on Tuesday. The loss against New Zealand was an early wake-up call for Buttler, whose team members know the Indian pitches and the conditions here like the back of their hand with many of them playing in the Indian Premier League.

While a score of 282 was always going to be difficult to defend at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the pace at which Kiwi opener Devon Conway and young left-handed batter Rachin Ravindra decimated the England bowling, scoring unbeaten centuries and making a mockery by finishing the contest in only the 37th over, would have jangled many a nerve in the team management and the fans back home.

While the likes of New Zealand pace bowlers Trent Boult, Matt Henry decimated the England batting, on the other hand, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and Sam Curran were simply ineffective in breaking the mammoth 272-run partnership between Conway and Ravindra.

While former England skipper Joe Root, opener Jonny Bairstow and the skipper himself made some useful contributions, a big innings was sadly lacking, which cost the defending champions the opening match.

Bangladesh would like to exploit those chinks in England’s armour when they clash at the HPCA Stadium, that has drawn flak for the reported quality of the outfield.

Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott had expressed his displeasure over the outfield at the Dharamsala Stadium following the six-wicket loss to Bangladesh in their opening match here, saying it was sheer fortune that some of the players did not pick up niggles while fielding.

Injuries so early in the tournament to any of their key players could jeopardise any team’s chances in the tournament and both side would like to avoid such a scenario.

While Buttler would like a more committed performance from both his batters and bowlers, whose best efforts could not breach the defences of Conway and Ravindra, Bangladesh would be upbeat following their winning start in the tournament.

While 36-year-old all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will always be a threat to any side, top-order batters Litton Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto, among others, have also given fine performances over the years.

In a low-scoring match against Afghanistan here on Saturday, both Miraz and Najmul smashed fine half-centuries as they overhauled the 156-run total with more than 15 overs to spare.

While England will certainly be the favourites, Bangladesh know how to turn the tide, and the defending champions know all too well that they can ill-afford a second successive loss.

Teams

Bangladesh:Shakib Al Hasan (c), Najmul Hossain Shanto, Hasan Mahmud, Litton Das, Mahedi Hasan, Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mustafizur Rahman, Nasum Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Tanzid Hasan, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Taskin Ahmed, Towhid Hridoy.

Ben Stokes struck the highest score by an England batsman in a one-day international on Wednesday, smashing a blistering 182 as the hosts piled up 368 against New Zealand at The Oval. But either side of his remarkable innings, fast bowler Trent Boult kept New Zealand in the game with an impressive return of 5-51 in 9.1 overs. England were set for a colossal total at 348-5 when Stokes was dismissed. But they lost their last five wickets for 20 runs, Boult wrapping up the innings with 11 balls to spare. England were wobbling at 13-2 following Boult’s early double strike in the third of a four-match series currently level at 1-1. But Stokes, who only recently reversed his ODI retirement ahead of next month’s 50-over World Cup in India, turned the tide in spectacular fashion.

His stunning 124-ball innings, including 15 fours and nine sixes, surpassed Jason Roy‘s previous England record of 180 against Australia at Melbourne in 2018.

Stokes, whose previous ODI top score was 102 not out, received excellent support in a third-wicket partnership of 199 with Dawid Malan (96).

Earlier, Boult again troubled an England top-order once more missing Roy after the opener suffered a fresh back spasm.

The left-arm quick struck with his first ball when Jonny Bairstow clipped him off his pads only to be well caught by a leaping Devon Conway at backward square-leg.

Boult then had Joe Root (four) inside-edging a drive into his stumps.

But Malan, back in the side after missing England’s 79-run win in Southampton on Sunday to attend the birth of his son, steadied the innings during a 52-ball fifty as he looked to cement his place in England’s final 15-man squad for the World Cup.

Stokes reached the landmark in just 44 balls, taking 15 runs off a single Lockie Ferguson over, including three fours, despite the paceman reaching speeds of 94 mph.

Test captain Stokes, in the absence of the injured Mitchell Santner, punished New Zealand’s spinners.

He was especially severe on Rachin Ravindra (0-28 in two overs), hoisting the slow left-armer for three big sixes.

Malan, fell just shy of what would have been his fifth hundred in 20 ODIs when he got a faint edge to wicketkeeper Tom Latham.

Stokes, as the sun came out in south London, went to 150 by slamming occasional off-spinner Glenn Phillips for six over midwicket.

He broke Roy’s record in style with a six off Ben Lister, only to hole out off the paceman two balls later to spark an England collapse from 348-5 to 368 all out.
