The meteorological department has issued an “orange” alert in Delhi for the next two days even as the capital did not receive rains on Monday despite a prediction of showers.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 36.1 degrees Celsius, 1.7 notches below the season’s average, while the minimum settled at 27.4 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year.

In a post on X, private weather-forecasting agency Skymet said, “The past two days have seen some respite from the downpours in Delhi and NCR (National Capital Region). However, weather experts predict a resurgence in rain activity, likely intensified rainfall over Delhi starting from July 2.” 

The capital will be on an “orange” alert due to rain, according to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) seven-day forecast.

The forecast predicts a cloudy sky for the next seven days, with moderate to heavy rains over the next two days and thunderstorms with gusty winds across the city.

The IMD had predicted moderate to heavy rainfall and the capital was on an “orange” alert on Monday. However, no rainfall was recorded.

The IMD also released an advisory for the rainfall, outlining the expected impact and suggested activities.

According to the IMD, moderate rain is defined as rainfall amounting to between 7.6 mm and 35.5 mm in a day and heavy rain is defined as rainfall amounting to between 64.5 mm and 124.4 mm in a day.

The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Friday, more than three times the June rainfall average of 74.1 mm and the highest for the month in 88 years — since 1936.

The IMD defines very heavy rain as rainfall amounting to between 124.5 mm and 244.4 mm in a day.

The torrential rain that brought Delhi to its knees last week was not a result of a cloudburst, the IMD clarified on Monday.

Delhi is likely to receive very heavy rainfall over the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said today, a day after the monsoon arrived in the city with the heaviest downpour in 88 years.

The IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert for heavy rain for the next four days.

“Delhi is likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day, with an even heavier spell anticipated on Sunday and Monday,” the IMD said.

Parts of Delhi, including Rohini and Burari, received rainfall this morning.

The weather office has forecast moderate to heavy rain accompanied with thunderstorms over the next seven days.

According to the IMD, moderate rain is defined as rainfall amounting to between 7.6 and 35.5 mm in a day, and heavy rain is rainfall amounting to between 64.5 and 124.4 mm in a day.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The maximum temperature is likely to settle around 32 degrees Celsius, the IMD said.

The humidity levels stood at 80 per cent.

Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded in the ‘moderate’ category with a reading of 108 at 9 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.

The monsoon arrived in Delhi on Friday, raining devastation on a city ill-prepared for a three-hour downpour that led to the roof of Delhi airport’s Terminal-1 collapsing, killing one person and suspending flight operations, and inundated many parts of the capital.

Seven others were killed in rain-related incidents.

The national capital recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall on Friday, the highest since 1936 for the month of June.

According to the IMD, 228.1 mm of rainfall was recorded at Safdarjung, the city’s primary weather station, 192.8 mm at Lodhi Road, Mausam Bhavan, 150.4 mm at Ridge, 106.6 mm at Palam, and 66.3 mm at Ayanagar.

Heavy to very heavy rain is likely across the national capital this weekend, the India Meteorological Department said as parts of the city were lashed by showers on Friday, bringing Delhiites much-needed respite from heat.

In its weather bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) mentioned that a thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds reaching 30 to 40 kmph is very likely at isolated places over Delhi and neighbouring states this weekend.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places across Delhi on June 29 and June 30, it said.

According to the IMD, heavy rain is defined as rainfall amounting to between 64.5 mm and 124.4 mm in a day while very heavy rain is defined as rainfall amounting to between 124.5 mm and 244.4 mm in a day.

On Wednesday, an independent weather agency had said, “Monsoon is expected to reach Delhi on the weekend.” The weather department has predicted localized flooding of roads, water logging in low-lying areas and closure of underpasses due to very heavy rainfall in Delhi on June 29 and 30.

The monsoon current typically enters Delhi between June 27 and 29. Last year, it arrived on June 26 while the first monsoon showers of 2022 were recorded on June 30, according to official data.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Delhi on Sunday predicted that light to moderate intensity rain with thunderstorms will continue over Delhi and adjoining areas. 

“Light to moderate intensity rain with thunderstorm moderate intensity rain over few places would continue to occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and NCR ( Loni Dehat, Hindon AF Station, Bahadurgarh, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadri, Gurugram, Faridabad, Manesar, Ballabhgarh),” IMD shared in a post on social media platform, X. 

According to an IMD statement, the maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi in the last 24 hours have been 32 and 24 degree Celsius respectively. 

Meanwhile, parts of Delhi received light rain on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. 

Several areas of the city including Safdarjung, airport, Rajghat, Vasant Kunj, Munirka, Narela, etc. received light rain on Saturday night which continued till Sunday early morning. 

More rainfall is expected to lash Delhi in the next couple of days, as per the weather forecast, bringing further respite from the humid weather conditions that persisted in the national capital for the last few days. 

IMD has also forecasted rain in several districts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

“Mattanhail, Jhajjar, Farukhnagar, Kosali (Haryana) Sikandrabad, Bulandshahar, Shikarpur, Pahasu, Debai, Narora, Atrauli, Iglas, Raya, Hathras, Mathura, Jalesar, Sadabad, Agra, Jajau (U.P.) during next 2 hours,” IMD said.
