The CBI is also examining Sandip Ghosh’s call records and chat.

New Delhi/Kolkata:

The controversial former head of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has been undergoing a gruelling questioning session in the probe into the rape and murder of a doctor. The CBI has been questioning Sandip Ghosh till midnight for the past three days and they have summoned him again today.

Here are some questions that the CBI has asked him over the past three days:

  • Why was there such a hurry to declare this death a suicide?
  • You are a doctor yourself. Did you not think it is important to keep the crime scene safe?
  • On whose advice was the information given to the family and why was it devoid of facts?
  • You must be well aware that tampering with evidence at the crime scene is a crime. Despite that, why did you not keep it safe till the investigation was completed?
  • Why was the family of the doctor informed after several hours?
  • Why was there a delay in showing the body to her family?
  • What are the security arrangements in the hospital?
  • Why did you resign immediately after the incident? What is the reason behind it?

Officials suggest the former principal is yet to give satisfactory answers to these questions.

Dr Ghosh, who had resigned two days after the incident, has also been asked about his steps immediately after the doctor’s body was found and about the sudden renovation of rooms near the seminar hall where the doctor’s body was found.

The CBI, which is also examining his call records and chat, has asked him to provide details of his phone calls before and after the incident that occurred on August 9. They are also planning to get his call and data consumption details from the service provider.

The rape-murder incident has sparked a massive wave of anger across the country with doctors suspending non-emergency duties and hitting the streets for justice.

Protests continue across the country against the rape-murder of a doctor.

Kolkata:
Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a trainee doctor was raped and murdered last week, is echoing slogans for justice – day and night. The fallout has now taken a political turn with both BJP and Trinamool announcing rallies today.

Here are top 10 points in this big story:

  1. The Indian Medical Association has announced the withdrawal of out-patient services and elective surgeries on Saturday while protests continue at premier medical colleges across the country. A doctors’ body in Maharashtra has announced a protest at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan today.

  2. Mamata Banerjee will hit the streets this evening demanding death penalty for the accused. The rally will begin from Moulali crossing to Dharmatala in heart of the city. She has given a Sunday ultimatum to the CBI to complete the rape-murder probe and hang the culprits.

  3. The BJP women’s wing in the state will hold a candlelight vigil from Hazra crossing to Ms Banerjee’s Kalighat residence in south Kolkata. They have also announced road blockades in all districts at 2 pm as they demand her resignation as the police minister.

  4. CPM too has announced a statewide ‘Dhikkar Diwas’ demanding the resignation of the state Health Minister and Home Minister. Both portfolios are held by Ms Banerjee. They have also been demanding the arrest of former RG Kar hospital head Sandeep Ghosh. SUCI, another Leftist organisation, has also called a 12-hour general strike in West Bengal over the hospital vandalism.

  5. Ms Banerjee, speaking on the Wednesday night vandalism, has claimed fake videos made using AI (artificial intelligence) are being circulated on social media. She also claimed “outsiders” were part of the mob that vandalised the hospital.

  6. Her comments came a day after a mob went on a rampage at the hospital during a midnight vigil by women to “reclaim the night”, demanding justice and safety for women at workplaces. Thousands were on the streets all night to mark their protest, showed powerful visuals from across Bengal.

  7. The Chief Minister said, “Two floors were destroyed and medicines were looted. Infrastructure, equipment, injection, everything was destroyed. We are yet to assess the extent of the damage. I’m not sure if there’ll be another wave of attack.”

  8. During the Wednesday night vandalism, almost all CCTV cameras were broken and the mob also vandalised a portion of the seminar hall where the doctor was raped and murdered, news agency PTI quoted a senior health official as saying. The official said restoration work may take a couple of weeks.

  9. The police yesterday released some photos of people believed to be part of the mob and sought information about them. They said at least 15 of their personnel were injured in the mob attack. At least 12 suspects have been arrested so far. The CBI, which has taken over the rape-murder probe, has summoned five doctors for questioning.

  10. BJP leader and Leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari has requested the centre to deploy paramilitary forces at the RG Kar hospital as he alleged the police have “failed miserably” in providing security. “Due to their incompetence, rather than protecting innocent citizens, they were locking themselves up in toilets, leaving the entire hospital exposed to the rioters,” he said in a letter to the Union home secretary.

A health ministry official, Suhrita Paul, will replace Sandip Ghosh as the Principal of RG Kar Medical College. Mr Ghosh — who said he was stepping down from the post and the government job following the rape-murder of the 31-year-old doctor — has been appointed the principal of the Calcutta Medical College, the city’s top teaching hospital. Ajay Kumar Ray, who was heading the institution, has been transferred to the health ministry.

The rapid changes were set in motion in after the rape-murder, which has triggered a storm not just in the state, but medical establishments across the country.  Cutting across cities, doctors are declaring strike to show solidarity with the protesting students of RG Kar Medical College and demanding speedy justice.

Announcing his resignation this morning, Sandip Ghosh had claimed his decision followed the wishes of the medical students and junior doctors at RG Kar, and the public.

“For the last few days, my family and I have been subjected to various adverse comments. So I have decided to resign,” he had said, claiming that he was being a victim of political conspiracy. “I have never been part of any kind of political game,” he said.

“I am getting defamed on social media…The deceased doctor was like my daughter. As a parent, I resign…I don’t like that this should happen to anyone in future,” he had told reporters as he left the hospital.

The outcry against him – started after Friday’s rape-murder — had intensified after he questioned why the second-year postgrad had gone to an empty seminar room alone at night – a comment that was seen as victim-shaming.

The hospital has no on-call room and the woman had gone to the room after dinner to study. Apparently she had dropped off to sleep there.

Her partially clothed body, bearing multiple injuries, was found there the next morning.

The prime suspect is Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police who was stationed at the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and had access to all departments. He was arrested on basis of CCTV footage that showed him entering the building where the doctor was found murdered. A Bluetooth headset found next to the victim’s body was seen on his neck in the CCTV footage. It was found to be paired with his phone as well.

Local media has reported that Roy admitted to the crime soon after police started questioning him. “Hang me if you want,” he had told the police nonchalantly, the reports said.

The preliminary postmortem reports, however, indicate the rape and murder may not be the handiwork of a single person. The police are not ruling out the involvement of more people.
