With Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ruling out India hosting the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as a potential host for the tournament. At the same time, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has asked for more time to save the tournament from being moved out of the country. In May this year, the ICC had unveiled the schedule of Women’s T20 World Cup to be hosted by Bangladesh from October 3-20, with warm-up matches scheduled to begin from September 27.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is believed to be looking at Dubai and Abu Dhabi as the options for hosting the tournament, though the BCB has sought more time. It added the ICC is expected to make a decision likely on August 20, when an online meeting of the directors is scheduled, though the agenda is different.

“A BCB official said on Thursday that it has requested the ICC for five more days before making a call. If the ICC grants the extra time, then it would have to decide on August 20, the day of the board meeting. It is understood that the ICC was originally expected to take the call on the Women’s World Cup by August 15,” said the report.

With Shah’s statement ruling out India as an alternative venue, the report also said BCB requesting for extra time is because they are confident of coming up with a plan that will meet the ICC’s requirements to host the tournament.

“The ICC is seeking a host country with a time zone similar to that of Bangladesh and clear weather conditions, and UAE fits that criteria well. Besides, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) boasts world-class infrastructure.

“And more importantly, the ECB is believed to be keen on hosting the event. It is understood that Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka are also interested. With just about 50 days remaining for the start of the tournament, time is running out,” added the report.

The report further said the agenda for the August 20 meeting by the ICC is believed to be finalizing the terms of reference for an inquiry into the delivery of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup co-hosted by the USA and West Indies, from June 1-29.

At the ICC Annual Conference in Colombo last month, cricket’s global governing body formed a panel comprising three directors – Roger Twose, Lawson Naidoo, and Imran Khwaja – to report on this matter. “The meeting has been mainly called to address this issue but a decision on the Women’s World Cup cannot be ruled out,” concluded the report.

Nat Sciver-Brunt smashed a record-breaking century on her 100th one-day international appearance as England thrashed Sri Lanka on Thursday. Deputising for ill captain Heather Knight, Sciver-Brunt hit England’s fastest women’s ODI century in just 66 balls. After eclipsing the previous best by Charlotte Edwards off 70 balls against New Zealand in 2012, Sciver-Brunt went on to reach 120 from 74 deliveries.

Her record would only have stood for a couple of minutes if Maia Bouchier had hit her 65th ball for six but she was lbw for 95, ending a boundary-laden 193-run stand in 121 deliveries with Sciver-Brunt.

Their efforts underpinned England’s score of 273-8 in a contest reduced to 31 overs each because of a rain-delayed start at Grace Road.

Charlie Dean took five wickets as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 112, giving England a 161-run victory and a 2-0 series success.

Sri Lankan pace legend Lasith Malinga on Thursday congratulated the national senior women’s team for clinching a historic series win in England. Sri Lanka women’s team created history on Wednesday by recording their first-ever series triumph over England in any format. The historic 2-1 series triumph came courtesy of a dominant seven-wicket victory over Heather Knight’s side in the third T20I in Derby. In his tweet, Malinga lauded the character shown by the team led by Chamari Athapaththu.

“Congratulations to SL Women’s Cricket team for the historic series win against England Doing so in their own backyard makes it even more special The character Chamari & her team have shown throughout the past year is promising and it’ll do wonders for the Women’s game in SL,” tweeted Malinga.

Coming to the match, put to bat first, England was bundled out for just 116 runs in 19 overs, with Maia Bouchier (23), Danielle Gibson (21) and wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones (20) helping England save face.

Seven of England’s wickets fell to spin bowlers, which included SL skipper Chamari Athapaththu, who delivered an all-round masterclass with a 28-ball 44 and a spell of 3/21. Kavisha Dilhari, Udeshika Prabodhani ended with figures of 2/16 each.

This performance raised alarm over England’s inability to play spin as they went down to Sri Lanka in the same fashion in the second T20I.

SL chased down the total without much issues as Athapaththu (44 in 28 balls, five fours and two sixes) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (26 in 28 balls, one four) guided the chase.

Having made her international debut at the age of 12, cricketer Mahika Gaur made history on Friday as she made her international debut for the second time, but on this occasion for England. As England took on Sri Lanka in a T20I, Mahika found her name in the playing XI. The crafty left-arm seamer. On her big day, Mahika also bagged her maiden international wicket, getting the better of Chamari Athapaththu. However, if it wasn’t for rain playing spoilsport, Mahika could’ve gotten more wickets.

Batting first, England went on to post 186 runs on the board, with Danielle Wyatt and Alice Capsey being the leading run-scorers. Chasing the target, Sri Lanka were 55/3 in 6 overs when rain put a halt to the match. England were declared winners by 12 runs, via DLS method.

England captain Heather Knight was full of praise for the 6ft 3 inches tall Mahika after the match. “Mahika was brilliant on her debut,” said Knight. “She had to move to death bowling after the rain and she executed her plan perfectly. At that height she gets real late swing which is quite a weapon.”

Who is Mahika Gaur?

Born in Reading in the south of England Mahika decided to become a professional cricket player after an IPL match in Jaipur in 2011. It was the late Australian spinner Shane Warne, who starred in the Royals’ match against the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals).

“I was practising bowling in the garden. I think my dad was just surprised that I could roll my arm fully without chucking the ball,” Gaur had said back in April this year. “He was a left-arm bowler in college but never got to do his cricket thing. But when he saw that I have potential, he’s always been on board.”

When Mahika’s family moved to Dubai, she enrolled in the ICC Academy and met the future UAE skipper Chaya Mughal. “The first time I went into ICC [Academy], she was training indoors and the coach over there, Adnan [Sabri] sir said that I can bowl to her.

“I was bowling loopy full tosses and she was defending them. She was the first person I bowled to there and I was star-struck. My dad told me she’s from the UAE national team – that was pretty cool,” Mahika revealed.

After making her debut for England, Mahika has played a total of 20 T20Is, claiming a total of 10 wickets. with a best of 3 for 21.

After a successful women’s multi-format Ashes series that saw record crowds in the stadium, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced an increase in match fees for the women’s side that will bring them on par with the men’s team.

“Following record-breaking crowds of 110,000 at this summer’s Women’s Ashes series, the ECB today announces it is increasing match fees for England Women to bring them in line with England Men’s match fees,” said a statement from ECB.

England set new women’s international attendance records at Edgbaston, The Oval and Lord’s and sold out matches at Taunton, Bristol and Hampshire in their series against Australia.

England Women’s captain, Heather Knight, proclaimed the series as “the best there has ever been in the history of the women’s game.”

The series ended in a 8-8 draw and Australia retained the Ashes. While Australia won the one-off Test and got those crucial four points, England won both white-ball series by 2-1 and got two points per win.

The increase takes effect immediately, beginning with this week’s white-ball series against Sri Lanka.

The additional investment follows increases to domestic salary pots this year and salaries for women’s players in The Hundred more than doubled last year. With increased earning opportunities in competitions around the world, the sport currently offers some of the best earning opportunities among female team sports.

Richard Gould, ECB Chief Executive Officer, said: “This summer’s thrilling Women’s Ashes series demonstrated how women’s cricket is continuing to grow at pace in this country, with record attendances and TV viewing. Growing the women’s and girls’ game is a key priority for us, and in recent years we have considerably increased investment both in building a domestic women’s structure to produce the players of the future, and in increasing player rewards.”

“In the years ahead, we will continue to invest ahead of revenues. We are currently considering all the recommendations made by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket, but equalising match fees is one immediate step we are pleased to make now. We all want cricket to be the team sport of choice for female athletes, and with the investments we are making – and increasingly lucrative opportunities around the world – we are seeing cricketers become some of the highest-earning female athletes in UK team sports. However, we know there is still much further to go as we ultimately strive for equality across the game.”

“As we continue to grow women’s cricket, we will continue to focus on making considered investments that stretch far and wide across the women’s cricket structures, delivering a thriving, profitable and future-proofed game,” he concluded.

Heather Knight, England Women’s Captain, said:

“It is really important that we continue to drive the women’s game forward and it is fantastic to see equal match fees for England Women and England Men.”

“The direction of travel for the women’s game has always been the most important thing, creating a sustainable product that people want to watch and play, and I’m sure this will make cricket an increasingly attractive sport to girls and young women as we continue to grow the game.”

“I would also like to thank the PCA (Professional Cricketers’ Association) and England Women’s Player Partnership for their support in representing the players and the growth of the professional game,” she concluded.
