Arne Slot got off to a winning Premier League start as Liverpool manager thanks to two quickfire goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah in a 2-0 win at newly-promoted Ipswich on Saturday. Slot has the unenviable task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, but the Dutchman will have been heartened by a commanding second-half performance.

“The first taste in the first half was maybe as expected because they were all on top of us, very aggressive. Second half was a joy to watch,” said Slot.

Ipswich were riding the crest of a wave after back-to-back promotions and a return to the Premier League for the first time in 22 years. Celebrity fan and minority owner Ed Sheeran was in attendance at Portman Road, although the singer-songwriter had to leave at half-time to attend a gig in Serbia.

Sheeran saw the best of the Tractor Boys, who were far from overawed by their illustrious opponents early on. Omari Hutchinson had a shot blocked inside two minutes before Jacob Greaves headed the best chance of the first half too close to Alisson Becker.

Slot is the only new face at Anfield as Liverpool are the only side in the Premier League yet to make a signing in the transfer window. The need for some fresh faces was shown in a sloppy and slow first 45 minutes on the ball.

However, Slot’s half-time team talk did the trick as the Reds were a different side after the break and could have ran out far more convincing winners. “First thing was we don’t have to speak about tactics if you lose so many duels,” added Slot.

“I think we needed to win the long balls through the air. That helped and gave us control. I don’t think Ipswich could keep up with the tempo in the second half.”

Greaves needed to make a vital clearance to prevent Salah’s effort curling in at the far corner. But Liverpool also had a narrow escape as a potential penalty for a Virgil van Dijk push on Liam Delap was ruled out for a marginal offside in the build-up.

Luis Diaz missed a glorious chance to open the scoring when he scooped over from close range after wonderful play from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai to tee up the Colombian. Alexander-Arnold’s teasing cross was then headed wide by Jota with the goal gaping.

Liverpool’s pressure finally told on the hour mark as another defence-splitting pass from Alexander-Arnold opened up Ipswich and Salah unselfishly squared for Jota to make amends for his earlier miss. Five minutes later it was 2-0 as Salah pounced to score for the ninth time on the opening weekend of the season for Liverpool after a one-two with Szoboszlai.

Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton made a string of saves in the closing stages, notably from Salah and Conor Bradley, to prevent a more embarrassing opening day defeat. Kieran McKenna’s men had been unbeaten at home in the league for nearly 12 months.

But Ipswich were given an early lesson in the gulf in quality between the Championship and Premier League. Things will not get any easier for Ipswich next weekend when they travel to defending champions Manchester City.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have the chance to build up some early momentum under Slot. Either side of a trip to Manchester United next month, they face Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Wolves and Crystal Palace in their next six Premier League games before the October international break.

Arsenal made a flying start to their bid to win the Premier League title as goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka sealed a 2-0 victory against Wolves on Saturday. Germany forward Havertz put Mikel Arteta‘s side ahead in the first half at the Emirates Stadium and England winger Saka wrapped up the points after the interval. It was exactly the kind of statement Arsenal needed after Arteta admitted they will have to be almost perfect to end Manchester City’s four-year reign as champions.

Arsenal enjoyed a record-breaking 2023/24 campaign, winning more games than ever before in the division, but were still pipped to the title.

City finished two points above Arsenal as the Gunners were forced to settle for a runners-up berth for a second successive season. Arsenal haven’t won the title since Arsene Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ went unbeaten through the 2003-04 league campaign.

But the painful near-misses endured by Arteta’s men have not dulled their appetite for success, with Arteta’s quirky man-management fuelling the fire. Arteta hired a group of professional pickpockets to teach his squad a valuable lesson in the close-season.

Unaware of the pickpockets’ presence at a team dinner, Arsenal’s players were relieved of their valuables as Arteta took the opportunity to remind them to be alert at all times, on and off the pitch. Stealing the Premier League title from City won’t be so easy for Arteta.

Arteta has so far opted against signing the striker that many regard as the missing piece in Arsenal’s title jigsaw. Riccardo Calafiori was Arteta’s major close-season signing from Bologna, but the Italy defender was only named on the bench.

Arteta has been linked with Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino but despite the call for new recruits, there was scant evidence of any Arsenal flaws in the north London sunshine.

Thunderous strike

The Gunners were quickly on the front foot as Ben White’s deflected effort was saved by Jose Sa. Saka forced Sa into a fine stop moments later as the Wolves keeper sprawled to keep out a low drive.

Arsenal had all the momentum against a Wolves side with little creative ambition and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 25th minute. As he was so often last season, Saka was the catalyst with a pin-point cross that picked out Havertz, who applied the finishing touch with a clinical header.

After showing little attacking ambition, Wolves were woken from their slumber by Havertz’s opener. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s fierce long-range strike flashed just over before Jorgen Strand Larse’s header drew an agile save from David Raya.

Arsenal still finished the half in the ascendency as Declan Rice‘s flick reached Gabriel Martinelli and his curler deflected narrowly over. On top again after the interval, Arteta’s side went close through Havertz’s chip before Thomas Partey drilled just wide.

Arsenal briefly lost their composure as Rayan Ait-Nouri’s 25-yard strike whistled past the post. Matheus Cunha shot straight at Raya after Arsenal gave the ball away at the back.

But the Gunners finished strongly and Martin Odegaard‘s effort was pushed out by Sa before Saka struck in the 74th minute. A flowing move climaxed with Saka lashing a thunderous strike past Sa as Arsenal underlined their desire to wrestle the title away from City.

New Signing Joshua Zirkzee Scores Winner On Manchester United Debut vs Fulham https://artifexnews.net/new-signing-joshua-zirkzee-scores-winner-on-manchester-united-debut-vs-fulham-6355554/ Sat, 17 Aug 2024 04:01:55 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/new-signing-joshua-zirkzee-scores-winner-on-manchester-united-debut-vs-fulham-6355554/ Read More “New Signing Joshua Zirkzee Scores Winner On Manchester United Debut vs Fulham” »

Joshua Zirkzee made himself a Manchester United hero on his debut with a late winner to beat Fulham 1-0 in the opening match of the Premier League season on Friday. Zirkzee, lacking match fitness after his £36.5m ($47 million) move from Bologna last month, came on only for the final half hour. The Dutch international saved the Red Devils from a frustrating evening at Old Trafford when he poked in Alejandro Garnacho‘s cross on 87 minutes.

“To win here in my first home game and to grab a goal, it couldn’t be better,” said Zirkzee.

“I’ve been told (scoring at the Stretford End) is one of the best feelings at Manchester United. I’m so thankful and blessed I could experience it in my first game. It’s an amazing feeling.”

United boss Erik ten Hag survived at the end of last season, despite finishing eighth in the Premier League, thanks to winning the FA Cup.

Whether that shock victory over rivals and English champions Manchester City in May could be a springboard is yet to be found out after a performance that was eerily reminiscent of many last season.

“I have seen many spaces where we have to improve but that is normal,” said Ten Hag. “It (the win) is good to strengthen the belief.”

The Dutchman revealed on the eve of the game that his side were “not ready” for the new campaign with key players missing through injury or a lack of match fitness, and it showed.

Bruno Fernandes started in a centre-forward role in the absence of Rasmus Hojlund, while Zirkzee was on the bench after returning to pre-season late following Euro 2024.

Noussair Mazraoui was thrown straight into the starting line-up at left-back after joining from Bayern Munich this week.

But there was no place in the squad for Jadon Sancho even though the winger and Ten Hag appeared to have settled their differences.

Fulham won at Old Trafford last season for the first time in 20 years in February during a torrid campaign for United.

Little seemed to have changed in the opening 20 minutes as the visitors started confidently and Andre Onana did well to prevent Kenny Tete’s dipping effort finding the top corner.

But United grew into the game after a slow start.

‘Kill in the box’

Twice Fernandes missed huge chances by firing too close to Bernd Leno before the German goalkeeper spread himself brilliantly to this time deny Mason Mount a rare goal since his move from Chelsea just over a year ago.

“We created a lot of chances and we should have scored earlier,” added Ten Hag. “That is the only criticism of the team: kill in the box!”

Ten Hag turned to Garnacho and Zirkzee from the bench in the search of a winner.

In doing so United left themselves open and Fulham could have secured another famous three points at the Theatre of Dreams.

Andreas Pereira’s poor pass cost Alex Iwobi the chance to run clean through on goal.

Moments later Lisandro Martinez produced a goal-saving clearance from Pereira’s dangerous low cross.

Instead it was the home side that snatched all three points.

Garnacho’s ball from the right was not the best, but Zirkzee managed to get a toe on it to divert it beyond Leno into the far corner.

United should have had a second in stoppage time when Garnacho somehow skewed wide with an open goal to aim at from Marcus Rashford‘s unselfish pass.

But United held on to give Ten Hag the winning start he badly needed.

Manchester City have been fined £2.09 million ($2.68 million, 2.48 million euros) by the Premier League for 22 instances of delaying the kick-off or restart of matches, it was announced Wednesday. The English champions have accepted the punishment, which relates to rule infringements over the past two seasons, the league has confirmed. This issue is unconnected to the 115 charges City are facing for alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations.

A Premier League statement said: “The Premier League and Manchester City FC have entered into a sanction agreement after the club accepted it had breached Premier League Rule L.33 relating to kick-off and restart obligations.”

City have been punished on a sliding scale for each offence.

Their first, a delay of one minute and 18 seconds to the start of the second half against Crystal Palace in August 2022, led to a warning.

But fines ranging from £10,000 to £200,000 have been imposed for each subsequent breach.

The longest delay was two minutes and 46 seconds for the start of the final game of the season against West Ham last season, when City clinched a record fourth successive English title.

The statement added: “Rules relating to kick-offs and restarts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs.

“It also ensures the broadcast of all 380 League matches around the world is kept to schedule.”

City have not commented directly but the ruling said: “The club has apologised for the accepted breaches… and confirmed that it has reminded the club’s players and football management teams of their responsibilities in complying with Rule L.33.”

Arsenal have signed Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna on what the Premier League club said on Monday was a “long-term contract”. No fee was disclosed, but British media reports said Calafiori, 22, had arrived at the Emirates Stadium on a five-year deal worth £42 million ($54 million) after representing Italy at Euro 2024. “We welcome Riccardo and his family to Arsenal,” said Gunners manager Mikel Arteta. “He is a great signing and gives us huge strength to reinforce our defence.

“Riccardo is a big personality and character, with specific skills which will make us stronger as we push to win major trophies.

“He has already shown great development in recent seasons with his performances for both Bologna and Italy, with his progression and development in the past year being really impressive.

“We’re looking forward to working with Riccardo, integrating him into the squad and supporting him in the years to come.”

Calafiori becomes Arsenal’s second major signing of the summer transfer window after David Raya‘s loan move from London rivals Brentford was made permanent.

The Gunners will be looking to go one better in the 2024/25 season after finishing runners-up to Premier League champions Manchester City by just two points last term.

Southampton clinched promotion back to the Premier League after a one-year exile as Adam Armstrong sealed a 1-0 win against Leeds in the Championship play-off final on Sunday. Armstrong’s first-half strike at Wembley ensured Southampton erased the bitter taste of last year’s relegation from the top-flight with an immediate return. Victory in football’s single richest match will give Southampton an estimated £140 million ($178 million) windfall due to the increases in matchday, broadcast and commercial revenue for clubs who reach the Premier League.

Financial experts Deloitte say Southampton could eventually bank £305 million if they avoid relegation next season.

While the cash prize is a huge bonus, it is the prestige of competing with Manchester City and Arsenal, rather than second-tier minnows like Plymouth and Oxford, that fuelled Southampton’s hunger to regain their Premier League status after a year in purgatory.

Southampton, whose only major honour is the 1976 FA Cup, had spent 11 years in the Premier League prior to their relegation.

They will hope this success, celebrated by over 35,000 of their fans at Wembley, is the prelude to another lengthy spell among the elite.

In their first ever play-off final, Southampton made it three wins over Leeds this term despite finishing three points behind the Elland Road club in the regular season.

Saints boss Russell Martin has become widely admired for his purist passing principles and this was the 38-year-old’s crowning glory.

Martin was managing in League One with Milton Keynes Dons just three years ago, but he has transformed Southampton in his first season in charge, to such an extent that they boasted more possession than any team in Europe’s top five leagues this season.

“I’m so pleased for the board because I was not an exciting appointment for them. I finished 10th at Swansea, but we had a really clear way of doing things at MK (Dons) and here, so for them to take me on was really brave,” Martin said.

“We had to do this to justify their decision. I feel really emotional about it.

“The team have been so brave. I’m really grateful and proud of them. They deserve it.”

Securing promotion at Leeds boss Daniel Farke’s expense was a sweet moment for Martin after his Norwich contract was terminated by the German during their time together at Carrow Road in 2018.

Defeat was a bitter blow for Farke and Leeds, who were relegated alongside Southampton last season.

– Back to the promised land –

American socialite Paris Hilton and movie star Will Ferrell — a minority shareholder in the club — had made good luck videos for Farke’s side, but there was no Hollywood ending for Leeds.

On the 35th anniversary of the death of their legendary manager Don Revie, Leeds were well below their best in the club’s fourth play-off final loss.

After losing their grip on an automatic promotion place that went instead to Ipswich, the three-time English champions remain without a win at Wembley since 1992.

Leeds made a fast start but Southampton weathered the storm and snatched the lead in the 24th minute.

Armstrong had scored twice in the play-off semi-final win over West Brom and the striker showcased his predatory instincts again with his 24th goal this season.

Cleverly eluding the Leeds offside trap with a well-timed run, Armstrong met Will Smallbone’s pass with a superb strike into the far corner from 12 yards.

Leeds were rocked and Armstrong nearly struck again from another instinctive shot from Smallbone’s quick free-kick, but this time Illan Meslier was able to parry his close-range effort.

Early in the second half, Leeds defender Joe Rodon embarked on a rampaging run that looked certain to end in a goal until Taylor Harwood-Bellis threw himself into a last-ditch block.

Leeds pushed hard for an equaliser, but Daniel James’ blast cannoned back off the bar before the winger was denied by Alex McCarthy’s stoppage-time save as Southampton celebrated their return to the promised land.

Manchester City closed in on a fourth consecutive Premier League title by thrashing Fulham 4-0 on Saturday, while Burnley were relegated from the top flight after a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham. Luton are also virtually down as a 3-1 defeat at West Ham left them three points adrift of safety and with a goal difference 13 worse than that of Nottingham Forest with just one game remaining. There was no twist in the title race at Craven Cottage as defender Josko Gvardiol continued his hot streak in front of goal.

The Croatian settled any City nerves by firing in on his weaker right foot after just 13 minutes.

Pep Guardiola’s men were dominant but had to wait until the hour mark to make the points safe when Phil Foden swept in his 25th goal of the season.

Gvardiol then turned in Bernardo Silva’s cross at the back post for his fifth City goal, all of which have come in his past seven games.

A 77 million pound ($96 million) signing from RB Leipzig last summer, Gvardiol could have become the first defender in Premier League history to score a hat-trick when City were awarded a penalty in stoppage time.

However, he turned down the chance to take it, allowing Julian Alvarez to instead round off the scoring.

Victory takes City two points clear at the top of the table and ramps up the pressure on second-placed Arsenal ahead of their visit to Manchester United on Sunday.

Should the Gunners fail to win, City can wrap up the title when they travel to Tottenham on Tuesday.

“My players like to play with pressure, they are used to it. The players enjoy this feeling,” Guardiola said.

“The destiny (of the title) is in our hands.”

Growing gulf

Spurs kept their chances of Champions League football next season alive by coming from behind to send Burnley to the Championship.

Jacob Bruun Larsen had fired the Clarets into a shock lead after Sander Berge’s pass cut the Tottenham defence wide open.

Spurs had lost their last four matches, but they turned the game around to move within four points of fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Pedro Porro blasted an equaliser high past Arijanet Muric.

Micky Van de Ven then curled in the winner to at least guarantee Spurs will be in Europe next season.

“Today the Premier League is over but tomorrow we start day one of doing everything we can to get back to the Premier League,” said Burnley boss Vincent Kompany.

“The game has gone a bit like others have gone for us this season. We created chances but we missed the final pass.”

Luton will also be back in the Championship next season after blowing a 1-0 lead and losing to West Ham in David Moyes’ final home game in charge of the Hammers.

Albert Sambi Lokonga’s early header gave the visitors hope of a great escape.

But second-half strikes from James Ward-Prowse, Tomas Soucek and George Earthy all but ended Luton’s Premier League stay after a remarkable rise back through the leagues to get back to the top flight for the first time in 32 years.

With Luton set to join Burnley and Sheffield United in going down, all three promoted clubs will be relegated to expose to growing gulf between the top two divisions.

Forest can confirm Luton’s relegation by avoiding defeat at home to Chelsea later on Saturday.

Newcastle missed the chance to tighten their grip on European qualification after being held 1-1 by Brighton.

Sean Longstaff cancelled out Joel Veltman’s early opener for the Seagulls at St James’ Park.

But sixth-placed Newcastle edge just three points clear of Chelsea and Manchester United, who both have a game in hand.

Crystal Palace’s stunning form since the arrival of Oliver Glasner as manager continued with a 3-1 win at Wolves.

Michael Olise, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Eberechi Eze were on target for the Eagles, who climb up to 12th.

Abdoulaye Doucoure scored the only goal as Everton beat Sheffield United 1-0.

Yoane Wissa scored a 95th-minute winner for Brentford to snatch a 2-1 victory at Bournemouth.

Manchester City swept to the top of the Premier League as Josko Gvardiol‘s double inspired a vital 4-0 victory against Fulham on Saturday. Pep Guardiola’s side are two wins away from lifting an unprecedented fourth successive English title after a commanding display at Craven Cottage. Gvardiol put City ahead early on before Phil Foden‘s 25th goal in all competitions this season increased their lead. By the time Gvardiol netted his second, City were strolling to three priceless points on a sunlit afternoon on the banks of the River Thames.

Julian Alvarez underlined City’s superiority with a late penalty after Fulham’s Issa Diop was sent off for fouling the Argentine.

Now two points clear of second-placed Arsenal, City will look for a favour from their arch rivals Manchester United, who host the Gunners on Sunday.

If Arsenal fail to win at Old Trafford, City will be crowned champions if they beat Tottenham on Tuesday or West Ham in their final game on May 19.

“Gvardiol’s goals were absolutely unexpected. He is unbelievable with both feet,” Guardiola said.

“We played really well and now we recover, then come back to London to play the big final (against Tottenham) to try to retain our title.”

Regardless of Arsenal’s remaining results against United and Everton, City know two more victories will make it a remarkable six titles in the last seven seasons.

“The great players enjoy playing with great pressure. These players in the last few years have been able to do it and we are again in the latter stages,” Guardiola said.

“Our dream was to arrive in the last games with it in our hands, to play West Ham at home with the destiny belonging to us.”

City’s 16th successive win against Fulham — the longest run of consecutive victories over one team in English football history — also mathematically ended third-placed Liverpool’s title challenge.

Asked why he was wearing a jumper in the searing west London heat, the superstitious Guardiola added: “I used this outfit many times so we keep it as it is. Even if it is 45 degrees!”

Guardiola had labelled the Fulham game as the first of four “finals” for City as they aim to clinch the title and then beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

They rose to his challenge in style and will head to Tottenham next week boasting a 21-game unbeaten league run, having also trimmed Arsenal’s goal difference advantage over them to just two.

Relentless City

A social media video of Fulham players flying a kite during training this week had raised questioned about just how focused the hosts would be in a match that had little riding on it for them.

Arsenal’s fears were confirmed as City carved Fulham apart in typically swaggering style to take the lead after 13 minutes.

Guardiola had revealed City practised on a dry pitch with high grass this week in a bid to prepare for a similar surface to the one that caused them problems on their previous visit to Craven Cottage.

City’s preparation worked a treat as a flowing 19-pass move climaxed with Kevin De Bruyne clipping a pass to Gvardiol on the edge of the edge.

The Croatian defender took two deft touches as he glided through the Fulham defence before planting a composed low finish past Bernd Leno.

Guardiola’s men monopolised possession, with Manuel Akanji wasting a golden opportunity just before half-time with a wild swipe that sailed over from De Bruyne’s corner.

City took complete control in the 59th minute as Bernardo Silva accelerated into the area, his progress halted by Joao Palhinha’s tackle, only for the alert Foden to pounce with a perfectly-placed strike into the far corner.

Guardiola’s team struck again in the 71st minute as Gvardiol stretched to turn in Silva’s cross with an agile close-range finish for his fifth goal in his last seven appearances.

Alvarez put the seal on a clinical performance from the relentless champions, converting a stoppage-time penalty after Diop chopped him down.

Manchester United beat Sheffield United 2-1 on Saturday on an emotionally charged evening as the Premier League giants said a “big goodbye” to club great Bobby Charlton, who died earlier in the day. Charlton’s family announced that the England World Cup winner, who enjoyed a glittering career with United, had “passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning” at the age of 86. Tributes poured in from across the football world, with former United player and England captain David Beckham praising Charlton as a “national hero”.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Manchester City beat Brighton 2-1 to return to the Premier League summit and Arsenal came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Chelsea.

Manchester United’s players paid a moving tribute to Charlton before kick-off against bottom club Sheffield United in the late game at Bramall Lane.

Captain Bruno Fernandes laid a wreath and a picture of the former attacking midfielder was displayed on a giant screen, while the fans chanted Charlton’s name during the match.

United manager Erik ten Hag praised the fans for their tribute.

“It was fantastic,” he told Sky Sports. “We have to pay our contribution, pay our big goodbye, remembering Bobby Charlton because what he did was magnificent.

“He was outstanding on the pitch and off it. We wanted to remember Sir Bobby and I think we did it in a decent way.”

The sluggish visitors went ahead against the run of play in the 28th minute when Scott McTominay controlled the ball on his chest and found the bottom corner from 12 yards out.

But the lead lasted just six minutes as Oli McBurnie scored from the penalty spot after McTominay handled James McAtee’s cross.

Ten Hag made three changes shortly after the hour mark, bringing on Anthony Martial, Alejandro Garnacho and Christian Eriksen in a desperate search for a winner.

But it was defender Diogo Dalot who produced the moment of magic to win the game in the 77th minute with a fine strike from long range to lift United to eighth in the table.

City return to top

Earlier, City manager Pep Guardiola also expressed his condolences for Charlton’s death and called him “a big legend” after the champions held on to beat Brighton.

City’s win was their 21st consecutive victory at the Etihad in all competitions, setting a new record for a winning run at home by a Premier League club.

The treble winners, who had lost their previous two league games, took an early lead through Julian Alvarez before Erling Haaland doubled the lead — his ninth Premier League goal of the season.

It was a different story after the break. Ansu Fati pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute to heap the pressure on the home team, who held on despite the sending off of defender Manuel Akanji.

Liverpool had fortune on their side against Everton at Anfield, where Mohamed Salah scored twice in a 2-0 Merseyside derby victory.

Everton’s Ashley Young was sent off before half-time for two bookable offences, while Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate escaped a second booking in the second half with the game still goalless.

Chelsea appeared to be on course for their third straight league win against after goals from Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk.

But Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice halved the deficit in the 77th minute, finishing from outside the box after Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez misplaced a pass straight into his path, and Leandro Trossard equalised.

“The way the team reacted to the second goal is phenomenal from the players on the pitch and the players on the bench thinking ‘how the hell am I going to change this game?’,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. “I loved that.”

Newcastle, whose early-season struggles are now a distant memory, romped to a 4-0 win against sorry Crystal Palace and are now fifth in the table.

Brentford beat Burnley 3-0 while Wolves came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1. Luton recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Nottingham Forest.

Tottenham, who started the day at the top of the table, are not in action until Monday, when they host Fulham.

ottenham came from behind twice to rescue a pulsating 2-2 draw against Arsenal thanks to Son Heung-min’s double in Sunday’s north London derby. Ange Postecoglou’s side trailed to Cristian Romero’s first half own goal before South Korea forward Son hauled them level at the Emirates Stadium. Bukayo Saka restored Arsenal’s lead with a second half penalty, but Son had the last word with his second goal as these bitter rivals both extended their unbeaten starts to the Premier League season.

Tottenham sit in fourth place, above fifth placed Arsenal on goal difference, after a hard-fought clash offered more evidence that Postecoglou has revived a club in turmoil when he arrived from Celtic in the close-season.

Although Tottenham have now won just one of their last 31 league trips to Arsenal and remain without a victory on enemy territory since 2010, there was much to admire from Postecoglou’s team.

Not only did they show impressive character to twice hit back from Arsenal’s goals, but they did it with the kind of eye-catching play that was so rarely seen during Antonio Conte’s reign.

Tottenham have scored at least twice in all six league games under Postecoglou despite the close-season departure of the club’s record goalscorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

“I thought performance-wise we had to show a bit of everything. Arsenal are a top team and we had to defend at times. But we showed real courage and bravery to keep playing our football,” Postecoglou said.

“This side is growing. In terms of our football we’re still at the beginning but I’m so impressed with the character.”

For Arsenal, it was a frustrating afternoon as they lost ground on leaders Manchester City, who stand four points above them in the title race.

“We feel like we lost two points. It’s true there was a lot of change in the dominance of the game. Emotionally, that was a difficult one to take,” Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said.

“We conceded two really poor goals. At this level they’re going to punish you because they’ve got top players.”

Maddison revenge

Arsenal tested Tottenham’s mettle in a blistering start as Saka scooped a pin-point cross to the far post, where Gabriel Jesus’ half-volley drew a fine save from Guglielmo Vicario.

Arsenal’s pressure was mounting and they took the lead in the 26th minute, albeit in the most fortuitous fashion possible.

As Tottenham’s defenders backed off too far, Saka advanced into the area and curled in a shot that took a huge deflection off Romero’s out-stretched leg as it flashed past the wrong-footed Vicario.

Rubbing salt into Tottenham’s wounds, Saka copied James Maddison‘s goal celebration as the dejected midfielder trudged back to the centre circle.

Arsenal keeper David Raya, starting his third successive match instead of Aaron Ramsdale, made an outstanding save to keep out Brennan Johnson’s strike late in the first half.

But, with Tottenham gradually turning the tide, Raya was guilty of misjudging a cross in the attack that led to the visitors’ 42nd minute equaliser.

After Raya weakly palmed the ball away rather than catching it, he managed to save Johnson’s effort, but Tottenham still recycled possession to Maddison.

Exacting revenge on Saka for his earlier taunt, Maddison adroitly evaded the winger and cut a low cross towards Son, who deftly flicked his shot past Raya from six yards.

Arteta had to send on Jorginho for the injured Declan Rice at half-time but Arsenal quickly regained the lead in the 54th minute.

The hapless Romero blocked Ben White’s close-range shot with his hand, conceding a penalty that referee Robert Jones awarded after checking the pitchside monitor.

Saka calmly stroked the spot-kick past Vicario before passing up more mockery of Maddison as he celebrated with a gleeful knee slide this time.

Remarkably, Arsenal’s advantage lasted just seconds as Tottenham snatched a 55th minute leveller.

Maddison was the instigator again, dispossessing the careless Jorginho in midfield before teeing up Son for a clinical finish into the far corner.
