A 12-year-old in the US was severely injured after her mother accidentally ran her over on her first day of school. According to People, the incident took place on Monday morning outside Boker Middle School in Florida. The mother, 30, was dropping her daughter off when she accidentally hit her. The child was airlifted to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg with critical injuries, cops said.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the 12-year-old had dropped some markers and pens and bent down to pick them up from under the vehicle. Tragically, however, the mother did not realise what her daughter was doing and began to drive off, running over her. “She immediately stopped when she heard her child screaming,” FHP Trooper Kenn Watson said, per People

A Sarasota County Schools spokesperson confirmed the accident, saying, “A parent accidentally hit their child as the parent was dropping the child off on the street”. “The school district encourages all families to follow district & school safety protocols and use the designated student pickup and drop off areas on school campuses,” they added.

Separately, Mr Watson said, “Here we are, day one, and we’ve already had a tragedy. We’re hoping this does not happen again, but we have to remember to have that good spatial awareness when you are anywhere around a school zone and most certainly when you are letting your kid out of your vehicle”.

“You want to avoid being in a hurry and dropping off our kids in the turn lane when we should be directly in front of the school,” he continued, adding, “This is a tragedy that one hundred percent could have been avoided by simply paying a little more attention and not being in a hurry.”

In a message to families, Booker Middle School principal LaShawn Frost said the crash “serves as a reminder of the importance of following our established safety procedures”.

“Please remember that students should not be dropped off in the middle of Myrtle Street,” the principal said. “This practice poses a significant risk to our students’ safety and the safety of others on the road,” he added.

On Tuesday, officials said that the child is in stable condition. “Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital has advised that the 12-year-old victim has been upgraded to ‘Stable’ as of 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time,” said Mr Watson.

NASA has 6 months to respond to Mr Otero’s claims.

A US family whose home was hit by space debris earlier this year is seeking compensation from the American space agency NASA for property damage and mental anguish. The metallic cylinder slab punched a hole in the roof through two layers of ceiling in Alejandro Otero’s home in Naples in March. Back then, NASA said that the object was part of a 2.9-ton pallet of used batteries jettisoned from the International Space Station in March 2021. Mr Otero said his son was nearly injured by the impact.

Now, law firm Cranfill Summer said in a press release that it filed a claim on behalf of Mr Otero and his family. It listed damages including non-insured property damage loss, business interruption, emotional/mental anguish and the costs for assistance from third parties.

According to the BBC, Attorney Mica Nguyen Worthy said space debris “is a real serious issue because of the increase in space traffic in recent years”. “My clients are seeking adequate compensation to account for the stress and impact that this event had on their lives,” she added.

Separately, speaking to CBS affiliate Wink-TV Mr Otero said that the space junk created a tremendous sound” as it blasted into his home. “I was shaking. I was completely in disbelief. What are the chances of something landing on my house with such force to cause so much damage,” Mr Otero said.

The US space agency confirmed that the debris was from its flight support equipment. It was a metal support used to hold old batteries on a disposal pallet jettisoned from the station in 2021. While most of the pallet was expected to burn up in the atmosphere, this particular piece survived the fiery re-entry.

“The hardware was expected to fully burn up during entry through Earth’s atmosphere on March 8, 2024. However, a piece of hardware survived and impacted a home in Naples, Florida,” the agency said. The ISS will “perform a detailed investigation” on how the debris survived burn-up, according to Nasa.

The BBC reported that the agency now has 6 months to respond to Mr Otero’s claims.

NASA confirmed it was part of a cargo pallet of used batteries that was released from space station.

Washington:

An American family is claiming more than $80,000 from NASA after a small piece of debris fell from space and smashed through the roof of their Florida home, a law firm said Friday.

The problem of space trash has risen in tandem with increased spatial traffic, and NASA’s response could set a precedent for how future claims are handled, law firm Cranfill Sumner said in a statement.

On March 8, the object weighing just 700 grams hit Alejandro Otero’s home in Naples, Florida, making a hole in the roof.

NASA later confirmed it was part of a cargo pallet of used batteries that was released from the International Space Station as waste in 2021.

Instead of fully disintegrating before falling to Earth, a section remained intact when it reentered the atmosphere, the US space agency said.

Otero’s son was at the house at the moment of impact, according to the law firm, which said that NASA has six months to respond to its claim.

“My clients are seeking adequate compensation to account for the stress and impact that this event had on their lives,” said lawyer Mica Nguyen Worthy.

“They are grateful that no one sustained physical injuries from this incident, but a ‘near miss’ situation such as this could have been catastrophic.

“There could have been serious injury or a fatality.”

NASA did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for a comment.

An autopsy into the death of Hillary Brown is pending.

A 41-year-old plastic surgeon in the United States has been arrested over the death of his wife who went into cardiac arrest on his operating table in November last year. The doctor, identified as Benjamin Brown, was taken into custody on Monday and charged with one count of second-degree felony homicide for alleged manslaughter by culpable negligence in the death of his wife Hillary Ellington Brown. According to The Independent, he turned himself in to the police after a warrant was put out for his arrest on Friday.

In a press note, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the 41-year-old’s practice, Restore Plastic Surgery, in Florida, for a medical emergency on November 21. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders located a female victim – later identified as Hillary Brown – suffering from cardiac arrest. She was taken to a hospital, where she was put on life support before she was pronounced dead. An autopsy into her death is pending.

“The autopsy protocol typically takes several months as it usually is dependent on extensive laboratory and toxicology tests as well as the information gathered by our Major Crimes detectives concerning the circumstances of the death,” the police department said in a statement.

Benjamin Brown is being held in the county’s jail pending his bond hearing, the statement added.

According to The Independent, on the day Ms Hillary went into cardiac arrest, she was scheduled to undergo miniature muscle plication/abdominal scar revision, bilateral arm liposuction, lip injections, and ear adjustment procedures. She reportedly prepared her own anaesthesia before the surgeries. She also ingested a handful of multicoloured pills, including Valium.

Shortly before the procedures, she began experiencing symptoms relating to sedation. When she went into the operating room, her husband administered additional anaesthesia without being able to verify what his wife took. He subsequently did not record his wife’s medication and dosage. At one point, his wife told him that her vision was becoming blurry and she saw “orange”. Moreover, she experienced restlessness, muscle twitching and blurred vision which are common symptoms of toxicity. The 41-year-old, however, continued injecting drugs into her face, following which she became unresponsive and started to seize.

At this point, a medical assistant asked the doctor if they should call emergency services and he said “no”. In the next 20 minutes, the assistant asked again and he said “no” or “wait,” the outlet reported.

The plastic surgeon began to panic and requested his assistants to bring him supplies, including an oxygen tank and stethoscope. However, as the medical assistant was new, they found it difficult to find the items. Meanwhile, instead of calling an ambulance, Brown allegedly “shouted” at the staff, asking “What medication did she take?”

About 10 to 20 minutes after Hillary Brown suffered a seizure, Brown instructed an assistant to call 911, but his wife never regained consciousness.

The medical board determined that Brown’s treatment of his wife was “careless and haphazard”. Moreover, in May, Florida’s Department of Health issued an emergency order restricting the doctor’s medical license to only perform procedures or surgeries in a licensed hospital while under the supervision of a licensed physician. The department is pursuing disciplinary action in the case. Ben Brown, on the other hand, has chosen to challenge the allegations made against him and the case will be heard by the Division for Administrative Hearings.

Sean Kingston was arrested during his concert on a California army base.

Rapper Sean Kingston was arrested on Thursday following a raid at his mansion in South Florida, ABC News said quoting Broward County Sheriff’s Office. The 34-year-old, whose real name is Kisean Anderson, was arrested “without incident”, the sheriff’s office further said. Mr Kingston faces numerous fraud and theft charges and will be booked into a San Bernandino Jail, as per the ABC News report. Before the rapper’s arrest, his mother too was taken into custody from the Florida home by SWAT team.

New York Post said Mr Kingston was arrested during his concert on a California army base. Video circulating on social media show law enforcement officers at Fort Irwin’s “Army Field” as the rapper performs ‘Eenie Meenie‘ on stage.

His mother is facing similar charges as her son.

After the arrest of his mother, Mr Kingston had posted a Story on his Instagram handle, “People love negative energy! I am good, and so is my mother! … My lawyers are handling everything as we speak.”

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The arrests were made in connection to allegations that Mr Kingston swindled a tech company out of thousands of dollars in a deal over a television and speaker system.

He was sued by Ver Ver Entertainment LLC in February, as the company alleged breach of contract and fraud. According to the Post report, the rapper had reached out to the company on Instagram to purchase a 232-inch television and a sound system.

The cost of the equipment was $111,000, but Mr Kingston promised to make promotional videos about the products with his friend, Justin Bieber.

But after the purchase, the rapper did not deliver what he promised, the company alleged in the lawsuit. It further said at the time of the television purchase, Mr Kingston had “no ongoing work” with the pop star, nor did he “have any intention” of making the promotional content.

Mr Kingston and Bieber, 30, famously collaborated on ‘Eenie Meenie’, which appeared on Bieber’s 2010 debut album.

Robert Rosenblatt, an attorney representing the rapper and his mother, said, “we are aware of some of the allegations” against the two.

“We look forward to addressing these in court and are confident of a successful resolution for Shawn and his mother,” Rosenblatt said.

In an attempt to throw the police off his trail, a man in Florida placed a sign outside his house, bearing the words: “Johnny Yates does NOT live here!!” However, his efforts proved futile. Mr Yates, aged 41, faced charges of aggravated battery, false imprisonment, and tampering, prompting the pursuit by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, which eventually led to his arrest, the New York Post said.

Deputies arrived at his Lakeland residence on a Saturday around 2:45 pm, acting on a tip that he was holed up there, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

“When the deputies arrived they noticed a note written on a dry-erase board in front of a window that said, ‘Johnny Yates does NOT live here!!’ Gee… a dry-erase board never lied to us before – should we believe it?” the Post said the Sheriff’s office as saying in the post, which has been shared with a small group of people.

“Enough was enough, and the ‘Surrender Smoke’ was dispensed inside the house, and four people exited the home, but no Johnny,” it further said.

“Deputies called out some more, but still no response from Johnny, so a second helping of ‘Surrender Smoke’ was put inside the home to waft around a bit.”

The authorities said they entered the house and located Mr Yates with the help of a canine unit. He was hiding in a modified chest of drawers, the shweriff’s office said.

They also dealt with four other people who were living in the house along with Mr Yates, said the Post.

“In regards to the four people who weren’t cooperating with deputies, each one received a parting gift: a charge of resisting and an all-expense paid trip to Grady Judd’s (the name of the sheriff) Bed & Breakfast,” they added.

Some students were “seriously affected” by the movie.

A school in Florida, United States, has come under fire after a mathematics teacher showed a horror movie to fourth graders which left them traumatised, as per a report in the New York Post. The students were expecting to have a fun day at school, however, it turned out to be horrifying as they witnessed “one of the most lovable characters turn into a murderous savage”.

On Monday, October 2, a class at the Academy of Innovative Education in Miami Springs watched the horror movie ‘Winnie the Pooh: Honey and Blood’ for about thirty minutes until it was turned off due to complaints from a few of the kids, the outlet said. As per IMDB, the horror film revolves around the characters of Pooh and Piglet seeking revenge after Christopher Robin leaves to go to university. IMDB has rated the movie 2.9 out of 10. Further, it is listed as an 18 by the British Board of Film Classification, while it is supposedly classified as NR in the US, indicating that it is not rated.

Michelle Diaz, the mother of a student at the school, told CBS News that the teacher was “careless” with his students. After meeting with the school’s principal, she said, “I feel completely abandoned by the school. They were exposed 20 to 30 minutes to a movie called ‘Winnie the Pooh, Honey and Blood’.He didn’t stop the movie, even though there were kids saying, ‘Hey, stop the movie, we don’t want to watch this’”.

Ms Diaz claimed that the teacher did not stop the movie despite the fact that some scenes made students evidently uncomfortable. She added that some students were “seriously affected” by the same. “It’s not for them to decide what they want to. It’s up to the professor to look at the content,” she told CBS News.

The Head of School Vera Hirsch, in a statement to the outlet, said, “The Academy for Innovative Education has become aware that a segment of a horror movie was shown to fourth graders, Monday, October 2, 2023, that was not suitable for the age group. Our administration promptly addressed this issue directly with the teacher and has taken appropriate action to ensure the safety and well-being of students.”

She added, “We are actively monitoring the students and our mental health counselor and principal have already met with those students who have expressed concerns.”

19-year-old Henry Horton IV was arrested by the police.

A 19-year-old man in the United States was arrested after the police found written threats for a “shooting spree” and other attacks at his former school and different locations during a routine traffic stop, as per a report in CNN. The man from South Florida planned to “kill everyone” at Okeechobee High School with his guns on January 2, 2026, which happens to be his 22nd birthday.

Henry Horton IV was stopped by the cops on September 18 for a broken headlight on the white pickup truck he was driving. During a search of Horton’s car, the officer discovered many handwritten notes detailing a plot to buy handguns and “kill everyone at OHS (Okeechobee High School) with my guns,” according to the affidavit from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. It is to be noted that the 19-year-old graduated from high school in May 2022. He had planned to kill 15 people including an administrator at the school.

An examination of his phone revealed specifics for many state mass murder plots, plans to make a bomb, and intentions to murder his stepmother. According to the affidavit, Horton had admitted to having mental health issues in the past and had “been having multiple thoughts about mass homicide and want(ing) to execute them once he turned 22 years old.”

Before he was stopped, authorities questioned him where he was going. As per the affidavit, Horton stated he was travelling to Miami to look at a church, where he wanted to murder roughly ten people after his planned 2026 assault at his former school.

Further, he was sent to “a hospital to receive a mental health evaluation under the Florida Mental Health Act”, as per the outlet. On September 29, Horton revealed to investigators that he composed a manifesto and made threats to kill his stepmother. He was arrested and charged with intimidation with written threats to murder or hurt another person.

As per New York Post, his mother Marcie Horton said that her son was “a ‘good kid’ and would never have actually carried out the plan.” She also urged officials to help him seek the required mental health treatment. Stepmother Alisha Horton also stated that he would never “hurt” her. “Henry isn’t going to hurt me. He would never. He needs to be treated for a mental disability instead of as a criminal,” she said.

Both the victim and the alligator were retrieved from the canal.

The daughter of a United States woman who lost her life to a 14-foot alligator expressed that her family was grappling with excruciating sorrow and agony. The alligator was found in a canal with a body in its jaws on Friday in Florida, as reported by the New York Post. It was sighted by a witness on a residential street in Largo, a small community located just four miles south of Clearwater Beach. Breauna Dorris, the victim’s daughter, posted on Facebook that her mother, Sabrina Peckham, was homeless and living in a forested area close to the incident scene.

Dorris speculated that her mother, aged 41, might have been on her way to her campsite when the alligator attack occurred. She also refuted several rumours circulating on social media that suggested her mother had ‘taunted’ the alligator.

“Some details I would like to clarify are that my mother did not ‘taunt’ the alligator, as some news outlets and comments are suggesting,” Ms Dorris wrote. “My mother was a part of the homeless population that lived in the nearby wooded area. It is believed that she may have been walking to or from her campsite near the creek in the dark, and the alligator attacked from the water,” she added. Ms Dorris said, “Regardless of the circumstances, no one deserves to die in this manner.”

Addressing her mother, she wrote, “To my mother: I love you more than I ever expressed, I miss you more than you’ll ever know, and I pray that you are looking down over me and your grandchildren.”

Furthermore, she mentioned, “Within 24 hours, we have raised over $4,000, which will be used for funeral and burial expenses.”

Alligator Attack Near Ridgecrest Park: Witness Account and Emergency Response

“I could tell there was a body in its mouth, so I started recording,” the outlet quoted the witness, JaMarcus, as saying. Mr Bullard, who was on his way to a job interview, promptly called the Largo Fire Department, which was not far from the shocking scene.

Upon their arrival, the emergency crew shot the alligator several times after pulling it from the water, according to Mr Bullard.

Jennifer Dean, a local resident, said, “Many of my neighbours who were present at the scene informed me about the gator”. Both the victim and the alligator were retrieved from the canal, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

When investigators arrived at the scene, they were standing next to a large, blood-stained alligator. The location is in close proximity to the popular Ridgecrest Park, which features a five-acre lake known for harbouring alligators.

Ms Dean claimed that alligators frequently inhabit the region, but the one that died on Friday was among the largest she had ever seen.

The two officers were arrested in July

A shocking video of two Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers stealing money and other items from bags of passengers at Miami International Airport has gone viral on social media. According to the New York Post, the officers allegedly stole at least $600 in cash and other items from passengers’ luggage on June 29 this year. The officers identified as 20-year-old Josue Gonzalez and 33-year-old Labarrius Williams, were arrested in July when enforcement officials began investigating claims of theft occurring at the checkpoint.

A video of the theft has emerged now, showing the agents working together to take money from wallets and purses that passed them on the way to the X-ray machine. In the footage, one of the officers is seen putting his hand inside a wallet and slipping the money inside his own pocket.

Watch the video here:

As per Fox News, the duo along with Elizabeth Fuster were arrested in July and initially charged with organized scheme to defraud, according to Miami-Dade County jail records. They were booked into Turner Guilford Knight Detention Center.

Fuster and Gonzalez confessed to ”numerous thefts” from travelers, admitting to stealing an average of $1,000 daily while working together. Both of them have pleaded not guilty to the third-degree felony grand theft charges they face, while charges against Fuster were dropped in August.

The officers have been removed from screening duties pending the completion of the investigation and administrative actions, according to the TSA.

The statement by TSA stated, ”The Transportation Security Administration holds its Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) to the highest professional and ethical standards and has no tolerance for misconduct in the workplace.”

”We actively and aggressively investigated these misconduct allegations and presented our findings to the Miami Dade Police Department, and are working closely with them. Any employee who fails to meet our fundamental ethical standards is held accountable,” the statement added.
