NY Lagos Strikers has created waves with two consecutive wins to kick start their Zim Afro T10 tournament campaign. With their able display against Bulawayo Brave Jaguars and Jo’Burg Bangla Tigers, the NYS Lagos showed great character and enthusiasm. Rassie van der Dussen delivered an outstanding performance, scoring a solid half-century against the Bulawayo Brave Jaguars following up with a crucial unbeaten 81 against the Jo’Burg Bangla Tigers. Rassie Van Der Dussen’s contributions were pivotal in securing victories for the NY Lagos Strikers, further establishing him as a key player in the tournament.

Rassie Van Der Dussen spoke on his performances of scoring his consecutive half-centuries, saying, “I believe our friends bowled pretty well so it was a competitive start.

But as soon as I got through the swinging balls, I was able to gain quite a bit of momentum.

Most importantly Season 2’s first half century was scored by Rassie Van Der Dussen who struck an incredible 51 against Bulawayo Brave Jaguars. An excellent partnership was also formed with Avishka Fernando who contributed to a 79-run stand in more than six overs which turned the tide of the match in favour of the Strikers against Bulawayo Brave Jaguars.

Following that, the NYS Lagos took on the role of entertaining the crowd as Rassie van der Dussen notched his second consecutive fifty of the tournament against Jo Burg Bangla Tigers. The South African opener started strong, scoring quickly from the outset. He finished with an impressive 81 runs off just 32 balls, featuring 8 sixes and 4 boundaries.

Talking about approaching innings in the Zim Afro T10 format, NY Lagos Strikers’ Rassie Van Der Dussen said, “I think it’s pretty similar like any other T10 format, it’s ten overs so we look to get off to a good start and then once you find that rhythm it becomes important to put your opposition under pressure. We have a nice opening pairing so Avishka and myself had a pretty good start again and from then on, we knew we could keep the pressure on the Bulawayo Brave Jaguars.”

Leaving message for the fans Rassie van der Dussen said, “It’s fun to play the T10 format, so if we are winning it’s fun to watch as well, so we like to thank our fans who support us and keep watching us.”

Also adding on back-to-back wins, Strikers’ member Thisara Perera added, “Actually, I know when are winning two games, it’s a good feeling you know. As a team we did really well, we also had good practice sessions. So we are on the right track, so we need to continue our good performance in the future also.

Quinton de Kock and Rassie Van der Dussen brought cricket back to prominence in South Africa amid the euphoria over the country’s epic triumph in rugby, their scintillating hundreds ensuring a 190-run hammering of New Zealand in the World Cup in Pune on Wednesday. De Kock (114 off 116 balls) hit his fourth century of the tournament to go level with Kumar Sangakkara who achieved the feat in the 2015 edition, while Van der Dussen blazed away to a 118-ball 133 as South Africa racked up an imposing 357 for four after being asked to bat first.

New Zealand were bowled out for 167 in 35.3 overs.

So far, only three batters have scored four or more centuries in a single edition of World Cup.

The Proteas have displaced India at the top of the points table following the win. Both are on 12 points, though India have played one game less.

David Miller blasted 53 in 30 balls to provide the final flourish four days after the whole country was basking in the rugby team’s record fourth World Cup triumph in Paris where the Springboks beat New Zealand’s All Blacks, their biggest rivals in the sport.

New Zealand’s reply was horrendous as they lost their in-form batters Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra with just 45 runs on the board.

Marco Jansen (3/31) struck the first blow with the new ball, getting the dangerous Conway (2) to edge one to Aiden Markram at second slip.

It was Jansen again who gave South Africa the second breakthrough as he dismissed the in-form Ravindra (9), who went for a pull shot but ended up top-edging it, putting the Proteas on top.

Gerald Coetzee struck with his third delivery of the spell as Will Young poked at a short-of-a-length delivery outside off to give De Kock a regulation catch and leave the Kiwis reeling at 56 for three in the 11th over.

It became 67 for four when Kagiso Rabada sent back skipper Tom Latham in a rather soft dismissal after the batter went for his shot too early.

From there, it was a matter of time before the New Zealand innings folded with plenty of overs remaining.

Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj (4/46) bowled James Neesham with a turner that would make the late Shane Warne proud.

Glenn Phillips delayed the inevitable with his 60 off 50 balls.

Earlier, taking dew into account, New Zealand’s stand-in skipper Latham opted to bowl first at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium whose stands were half-full with some people gathered outside when the in-form De Kock and skipper Temba Bavuma walked out to bat.

However, dew was not a factor as South Africa proved to be too good for their opponents who suffered their third defeat of the tournament in seven outings. For the Proteas, it was their sixth win in seven matches, the margin of victory doing their net run rate a world of good.

After Bavuma’s (24) dismissal, in De Kock and Van der Dussen, the South Africans had the perfect duo to set the tone, and they did exactly that with a 200-run partnership in little over 30 overs.

Riding on a bit of luck with one of his shots falling in a no man’s land, De Kock stepped outside against Mitchell Santner and hoisted the seasoned left-arm spinner over the long-on boundary for a six.

Van der Dussen, too, got into the act and looked comfortable while accumulating his runs.

Dealing with two set batters was not the only challenge for the Kiwis as they also had players getting injured, the last thing for a team that was already grappling with injuries to key players heading into this match.

After Matt Henry hurt his right hamstring and received treatment, Jimmy Nesham also had some injury issues.

Meanwhile, luck also smiled on Van der Dussen as he got more than one reprieve on way to his century.

First, De Kock reached his hundred in style, smashing Neesham on the onside for a maximum. Soon, Van der Dussen got to his ton with a four.

Batting on 104 off 105 balls, Van der Dussen shifted gears and launched into Neesham for two consecutive sixes, the first one was thanks to Trent Boult tipping the ball over the ropes while trying to catch it.

Then, Van der Dussen carted Tim Southee for a maximum over long-on. By the time De Kock and Van der Dussen were dismissed, they had done enough for South Africa to aim for 350.

Then, Miller produced a few big hits to prop them up towards the end.

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh went on rant after multiple controversies hit the Cricket World Cup 2023 match between Pakistan and South Africa on Friday. Both Pakistan and South Africa were on the receiving end of some controversial calls by the technology. While South Africa batter Rassie van der Dussen was adjudged LBW due to a DRS glitch, his teammate Tabraiz Shamsi survived a similar dismissal due to the umpire’s call. Harbhajan asked for more consistency in such decisions, adding that the officials should either completely rely on technology or stick with the umpire’s call.

Reacting to an old video of former England captain Nasser Hussain defending the technology, Harbhajan urged the ICC not to fool people who are madly in love with the sport.

“Paid to speak for tech to show tech is right .he is suggesting tech is right @imVkohli isn’t  Coz tech must have paid the broadcaster to show how important is tech .. Ok if the tech is right go with tech y do u need umpires to stick to the their own decisions ? Utterly nonsense .. use 1 tech or umpire .. don’t make people fool who love this game blindly,” Harbhajan posted on X (former Twitter).

South African skipper Temba Bavuma admitted his team was lucky after pulling off a one wicket win over Pakistan.

“I do think we could have shown a lot more of a clinical display in going about that run chase. I think we did have luck on our side. We did give them opportunities to get into the game,” Bavuma was quoted as saying by AFP.

Pakistan suffered a shocking one-wicket defeat against South Africa in their ODI World Cup 2023 match on Friday. Chasing 271, Pakistan gave their best bowling effort to restrict the Proteas but Aiden Markram‘s 91-run knock and Keshav Maharaj‘s boundary helped them seal a win in the 48th over. Apart from this thrilling chase, this match also grabbed a lot of limelight when Tabraiz Shamsi survived a close leg-before appeal that went to umpire’s call off fast bowler Haris Rauf with eight needed. The incident took place on the final ball of the 46th over.

Commenting on the situation, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh did not mince his words while criticizing the bad umpiring, which eventually “cost Pakistan this game”.

“Bad umpiring and bad rules cost Pakistan this game..@ICC should change this rule .. if the ball is hitting the stump that’s out whether umpire gave out or not out doesn’t matter.. otherwise what is the use of technology???” tweeted Harbhajan.

However, Harbhajan’s words did not go well with former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith as he immediately gave a reference of the LBW dismissal of Rassie Van Der Dussen.

“Bhajji, @harbhajan_singh I feel the same as you on umpires call, but @Rassie72 and South Africa can have the same feeling.?” tweeted Smith.

During the 19th over, Rassie Van Der Dussen was declared LBW out after he was struck on the pads off Usama Mir‘s delivery. The Proteas batter took the DRS but the decision came as the umpire’s call and Rassie had to depart.

Harbhajan also shared his verdict on van der Dussen’s dismissal, saying that the batter was not out. The former India spinner added that the technology was used to save the umpire, rather than the batter. “He was not out according to me .. but tech was there to give him out as umpire gave him out.. otherwise umpire would hv looked bad for wrong decision.. they saved the umpire there not the player who could have won the game easily for SA,” Harbhajan added.

The win took South Africa top of the table with 10 points from five wins in six matches.

Pakistan, however, have lost four in succession after opening the tournament with back-to-back wins.

They have four points and will need results to fall in their favour if they are to sneak into the semi-finals.

Amid outrage from fans and experts, the International Cricket Council has issued clarification over Rassie van der Dussen‘s LBW decision in a World Cup match between Pakistan and South Africa on Friday. In the 19th over of South Africa’s 271-run chase, netizens spotted an ‘erroneous’ glitch after van der Dussen was adjudged LBW off Usama Mir‘s delivery. The South African batter went on the back foot without judging the trajectory of the ball and Mir’s delivery struck him on the pads. On-field umpire Paul Reiffel raised his finger, but van der Dussen immediately went for the DRS.

At first, the ball-tracking technology showed that Mir’s delivery would have gone on to miss the leg stump but that tracking was taken off air.

However, another tracking appeared, showing that the ball was clipping the leg stump. That is where all the confusion started as fans posted screenshots of the DRS glitch on social media.

On both occasions, the tracking showed the ball was pitching in line, the impact was ‘umpire’s call’, but both had a different trajectory on the final part.

Van der Dussen was in disbelief as the third umpire asked the Reiffel to stay with his original decision. However, ans were quick to question the reason behind the glitch

Despite agreeing that there was glitch in the technology, ICC clarified that the right decision was made eventually.

“In today’s match between South Africa and Pakistan, an incomplete graphic was erroneously displayed during the LBW review of Rassie van der Dussen. The completed graphic with the right details was ultimately displayed,” an ICC spokesperson was quoted as saying by Wisden.

In the end, South Africa won the match by one wicket, with Keshav Maharaj hitting the winning boundary.

South Africa rewrote the record books on Saturday as they posted the highest ever World Cup total of 428 while Aiden Markram clubbed the fastest tournament century in just 49 balls in a 102-run victory over Sri Lanka. The Proteas bettered the previous World Cup high of 417 made by Australia against Afghanistan at Perth in 2015. Their 428-5 was also the ninth highest total in all one-day internationals. Markram, who went on to make 106, beat the previous record for fastest World Cup century which was claimed by Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien off 50 balls against England at Bengaluru in 2011. His first 50 on Saturday came from 34 balls while he needed only 15 more deliveries to add the next 50.

Rassie van der Dussen (108) and Quinton de Kock (100) also hit centuries in the first World Cup match to feature three tons in the same innings.

Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka and skipper Dasun Shanaka all then hit half-centuries but Sri Lanka’s reply was always going to be damage limitation.

“We wanted to win the game and that’s what we did. I can’t find fault with the batting. We were not quite clinical with the ball but we will take that confidence into the next game,” said South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma.

For Sri Lanka, the figures made for grim reading with two of their bowlers — Matheesha Pathirana (1-95) and Kasun Rajitha (1-90) — conceding more than 180 runs from 20 overs.

It was a remarkable display of big-hitting by a South African side who were skittled out for just 99 the last time they played at New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium in October 2022.

“From a team like South Africa, we expected 350 anyway in these conditions. If we’d managed to keep them to 370 it’s manageable,” said Shanaka.

“We had the momentum especially the way that Mendis and Asalanka played. But their total was a little too much for us.”

De Kock, who is playing in his final international tournament, hit his 18th ODI century off 83 balls with 12 fours and three sixes.

De Kock put on 204 runs for the second wicket with Van der Dussen before being dismissed off the next ball he faced after reaching 100, top edging a delivery from Pathirana to Dhananjaya de Silva at mid-on.

Van der Dussen soon reached his fifth century in the format off 103 balls with 12 fours and three sixes.

The 34-year-old, playing in his 50th ODI, was out in the 38th over when Sadeera Samarawickrama took a catch on the long-on boundary.

De Kock and Van der Dussen came together at the fall of the first wicket when Bavuma was trapped lbw by Dilshan Madushanka for just eight in the second over.

Markram gave Sri Lanka no respite, racing to his half-century from 34 balls before he and Heinrich Klaasen (32) took the Proteas past the 350 mark in the 44th over.

Markram’s century featured 14 fours and three sixes.

He plundered 18 off one over from Pathirana, the young, sling-action fast bowler hailed as the likely World Cup “X Factor” 24 hours earlier by Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood.

Markram was eventually dismissed when he skied the ball to Rajitha in the deep off Madushanka.

David Miller cracked 39 runs off 21 balls with two sixes in the late overs to further deepen the misery for Sri Lanka.

South Africa fast bowler Marco Jansen took two early wickets, clean bowling Sri Lanka openers Pathum Nissanka (0) and Kusal Perera (7).

Mendis, who hit 158 against Afghanistan in a warm-up last week, briefly threatened hope for Sri Lanka.

The 28-year-old raced to a half-century off just 25 balls but his resistance ended when Klaasen held on to a catch off a 140km/h delivery from Kagiso Rabada.

Mendis made 76 with four boundaries and eight sixes while Asalanka hit 79 with eight fours and four sixes.

Shanaka also helped restore a degree of dignity with 68, the first time in 14 innings he had got past 25.

Aiden Markram smashed the fastest World Cup century off just 49 balls, while Quinton De Kock and Rassie van der Dussen also made punishing hundreds as South Africa sounded early warning with a mammoth 428/5 against Sri Lanka in their World Cup match on Saturday. This was the third 400-plus total by South Africa in Cricket World Cup history as they became the first team ever to achieve this feat. De Kock (100 off 84 balls), Dussen (108 off 110 balls) and Markram (106 off 54 balls) went on a rampage to power South Africa past the highest World Cup total ever — Australia’s 417/7 against Afghanistan in the 2015 edition.

Highest team totals in ODI Cricket World Cup

428/5 – SA vs SL, Delhi 2023*
417/6 – AUS vs AFG, Perth 2015
413/5 – IND vs BER, Port of Spain 2007
411/4 – SA vs IRE, Canberra 2015
408/5 – SA vs WI, Sydney, 2015

After De Kock and Van der Dussen set the platform for a massive score with their second-wicket stand with 204 runs, Markram applied a brutal coup de grace to pulverise Sri Lanka.

All three South African centurions — De Kock, Van der Dussen and Markram — also recorded their maiden World Cup hundreds.

A total of 39 fours and eight sixes came collectively from the Proteas trio.

Heinrich Klaasen hit another three fours and a six for his 20-ball 32 and David Miller clobbered three fours and two sixes for his unbeaten 21-ball 39.

Making the most of a favourable pitch against a depleted and erring Sri Lankan bowling line-up, South African batters motored on at a high scoring rate in the middle-overs to wrest control.

An early blow was dealt when Dilshan Madushanka pinned Temba Bavuma (8) in front of the wicket, but that was the only moment of joy for the Sri Lankans.

De Kock and Van der Dussen, came together a mere 10 balls into the contest, were separated only after putting their team in a commanding position with the fourth highest ever partnership for any wicket for South Africa in the World Cup.

De Kock, set to retire from ODIs after the tournament, was in his elements in getting a hundred.

On the other hand, Van der Dussen celebrated his 50th ODI with a fifth ton of the career, cracking 13 fours and two sixes in the process. Markram began with two cracking straight drives for four off Madushanka and brought out every conventional stroke in his book to break the record set by Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien (50 balls for 100) in 2011.

Van der Dussen survived a close chance on 65 when a mistimed hit fell very close to Sadeera Samarawickrama, who, placed at short midwicket, responded tad late and missed the catch.

With no turn or grip for SL spinners, the South African batters capitalised with the ball sliding on to the bat in the middle overs. In fact, 85 runs came in overs between 19 and 29 featuring 11 fours and two sixes.

Dunith Wellalage bowled five straight dots to the right-handed Van der Dussen in the 26th over which forced the batter to try breaking the trend.

An attempted reverse-sweep sent the ball flying close to Pathum Nissanka, who put in a dive to his right but his one-handed effort had the ball popping out of his hand.

In the 29th over, another chance to break the partnership went begging when a mix-up between De Kock and Van der Dussen left both batters vulnerable to a run-out. But a throw at the wrong end — which also missed the stumps — kept the pair intact.

However, De Kock fell right after completing the milestone, getting a top edge on a short ball off Pathirana in the 31st over and Van der Dussen also did not push on much after his century.

Heinrich Klaasen in action for South Africa© AFP

Heinrich Klaasen slammed 174 off 83 balls to lead a South African batting assault against Australia in the fourth one-day international at SuperSport Park on Friday. Klaasen shared an extraordinary fifth wicket partnership of 222 off only 94 balls with David Miller (82 not out) as South Africa piled up 416 for five, their fifth-highest total in one-day internationals. Klaasen struck 13 fours and 13 sixes before being caught on the boundary off the last ball of the innings. A run spree of such magnitude did not seem likely as accurate Australian bowling and a slower than usual Centurion pitch saw South Africa make relatively sedate progress on a ground known for high scoring.

At the second drinks break, the total was 157 for three off 32 overs.

The acceleration started with a stand of 74 off 57 balls between Rassie van der Dussen (62) and Klaasen.

It went into over-drive when the left-handed Miller joined Klaasen and hit the second ball he faced, from leg-spinner Adam Zampa, for six.

Miller’s 82 not out came from 45 balls and included five sixes and six fours.

Zampa was hammered for 113 runs off his 10 overs, Marcus Stoinis conceded 81 runs and Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis went for 79 apiece.

It is a must-win game for South Africa, with Australia leading the five-match series 2-1.
