Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran is a doubtful for the one-off Test against New Zealand after copping up an injury in Greater Noida on Sunday. The 22-year-old opening batter hurt his ankle during team’s final practice session ahead of Afghanistan’s first ever Test against New Zealand, starting on Monday. “Today, in the practice session, Ibrahim had an injury in his ankle. But it’s not sure 100 per cent what will happen tomorrow. We will see what will happen with him,” Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi informed at the pre-match press conference.

Zadran has played seven of Afghanistan’s nine Tests. He had scored his maiden century in the format earlier this year in February against Sri Lanka.

Afghanistan are already without start spinner Rashid Khan.

Persistent rain has marred Afghanistan and New Zealand’s preparation for this historic Test.

Confusion between Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz in AFG vs BAN.© X (Twitter)

Afghanistan’s historic 2024 T20 World Cup win over Bangladesh, that helped them achieve their first-ever semi-finals, was not without its funny moments. Afghanistan put up a total of only 115 in 20 overs, which included openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran playing at a strike rate of under 100. Their struggles translated into their running between the wickets, and brought about a moment where both batters were hilariously running in the same direction. The video of the comical moment went viral on social media.

In the incident, Gurbaz had played a shot towards point, and initiated a run before signalling partner Zadran to go back. Zadran had missed the signal, and for a while, both Zadran and Gurbaz were running towards the striker’s crease. After Bangladesh overthrew, Zadran realized that he was on the same end as Gurbaz. Hilariously, Gurbaz also realized that Zadran was on his end, and started dashing towards the non-striker’s crease.

Ultimately, the two managed to complete a single despite all the confusion.

The comedy of errors was not just on the side of Afghanistan, however, as Bangladesh’s poor fielding meant that they could not take advantage of the mix-up.

The misfields would come back to bite Bangladesh, who failed to get over the line. Despite chasing only 114 after the game had been shortened to 19 overs due to rain, Bangladesh fell short by 8 runs.

The game, which saw rain interruptions on four separate occasions, saw a dramatic end as Afghanistan clinched victory and erupted into celebration.

The comical running between the wickets wasn’t the only video of Afghanistan’s that went viral on X. Another video showed Jonathan Trott instructing his players to slow the game down, after which Gulbadin Naib appeared to be injured.

Afghanistan will take on South Africa in the semi-final of the 2024 T20 World Cup on June 27. The winner will face either India or England on June 29.

History was created on Sunday (IST) as Afghanistan stunned the mighty Australia by 21 runs in their T20 World Cup 2024, Super 8 match in Kingstown. Asked to bat first, the Afghans were restricted to 148/6, despite a 118-run partnership between their openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. Chasing 149, Australia lost early wickets but Glenn Maxwell brought them back into the game with this 59-run knock. Maxwell, who earlier denied a historic win to Afghanistan during the ODI World Cup 2023, was guiding Australia to another memorable victory. But this time, the Afghans bounced back and bundled out Australia for 127.

This was Afghanistan’s first-ever victory over Australia in six international matches. As Afghanistan registered the historic win, social media got flooded with loads of good wishes and messages from fans for Rashid Khan and co.

Apart from Gurbaz and Zadran’s partnership, it was the bowlers’ contribution that led Afghanistan to victory. Pacer Gulbadin Naib was the star bowler with his magnificent four-wicket haul.

“We were waiting for a long time. Great moment for me, my nation, my people. Big achievement for our cricket. Thanks to our fans for supporting our cricket journey. We worked hard for the last 2 months, and the result is in front of you. The wicket wasn’t easy to bat on, the ball was too bouncy. I took two wickets early on, and carried that on later,” said Naib after the victory.

“Thanks to Rashid for trusting me. This was a complete team effort. The way Naveen bowled, the way Gurbaz and Ibrahim batted. We beat Australia at last! It is a great achievement for Afghanistan cricket, our history isn’t too much so this is a great achievement. We played great cricket in the last World Cup, and this year we beat New Zealand in the group stage,” he added.

Apart from him, Naveen-ul-Haq scalped three wickets while Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Rashid Khan also scalped one wicket each.

With this win, Afghanistan have kept themselves alive in the semi-final race. They will now take on Bangladesh in their last Super 8s clash on Tuesday.

After getting the better of the defending Cricket World Cup champions England, Afghanistan proved once again that the performance was not a flash in the pan as they beat Pakistan in Chennai on Monday. Against a much-fancied bowling attack of Pakistan, Afghanistan batters played with confidence and quite easily surpassed a 283-run target. The loss put a lot of focus on Pakistan too, who have now lost three matches in a row. After getting beaten by India and Australia, the Babar Azam-led side failed to end on the winning side against a lower-ranked Afghanistan too.

However, former Indian cricket team opener Wasim Jaffer felt that the win by Afghanistan ‘was not an upset’.

“Tough pill to swallow for Pakistan but trust me this is not an upset. Afg came close to beating Pak in recent times as well but got over the line today thanks to top batting effort by the top 4. Very well played @ACBofficials #PAKvAFG #CWC2023,” Wasim Jaffer wrote on X.

Riding on a dazzling all-round performance in the field, Afghanistan stunned their neighbours with a thumping eight-wicket defeat on a sluggish Chennai surface.

The opening pair of Gurbaz (65), and Zadran (87), along with Rahmat Shah (77)* at No.3, starred with the bat to help Afghanistan post a win for the ages.

After the mauling against India, Pakistan’s bowlers had another forgettable outing, failing to put any pressure on the Afghan batters despite defending an above-par total of 283 on a sluggish and challenging Chennai surface.

Chasing 283, a challenging total on a Chennai pitch affording uneven bounce, Afghanistan cantered to a win by eight wickets, with an over to spare.

Afghanistan has now got the better of two cricketing powerhouses — former world champions Pakistan and the defending champions England. The win lifted Afghanistan to sixth on the points table. On the other hand, Pakistan stayed in the fifth position with four points and a net run rate of -0.400.

The high-flying Afghans will play Sri Lanka next on October 30 at the high-scoring Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

Afghanistan put on a superb batting and bowling show on Monday to stun Pakistan by eight wickets in the Cricket World Cup 2023 match at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Afghanistan hunted down a target of 283 runs in 49 overs against the bowling line-up that had the likes of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali. Pakistan had made 282 for 7 in their 50 overs with 74 from skipper Babar Azam and 58 from opener Abdullah Shafique but the total did not prove tough enough for a clinical Afghanistan.

Here are the stars of Afghanistan’s historic win over Pakistan –

Ibrahim Zadran: A total of 282 for 7 at the half-time during the match seemed enough for Pakistan to win the game, but Zadran’s 87 off 113 balls put the chasing side in the driver’s seat. By the time he was dismissed, Afghanistan (190/2 in 33.3 overs) held an edge over Pakistan.

Noor Ahmad: On a track where star spinners like Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan remained wicketless with the former also leaking nearly 7 runs per over, left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad returned figures of 3 of 49 in his quota of 10 overs. He claimed the important wickets of Babar Azam (74), Mohammad Rizwan (8) and Abdullah Shafique (58).

Rahmanullah Gurbaz: The opener was another key player in Afghanistan’s historic win over Pakistan. He scored 65 runs off 53 balls, providing a solid start to his side in the chase. A strike rate of 122.64 from Gurbaz meant that the pressure of required run rate was never there for Afghanistan. Zadran and Gurbaz stitched 130 runs for the opening wicket.

Rahmat Shah: Afghanistan lost two wickets for 190 runs and it seemed that Pakistan might bounce back in the game. At that point in time, Afghanistan needed 93 runs off the remaining 99 balls. Number three batter Rahmat understood his responsibilities well and stitched an unbeaten stand with new batter Hashmatullah Shahidi to take the chasing team home. Rahmat scored 77 not out off 84 balls while Shahidi also contributed with an unbeaten 48 off 45.

After playing a match-winning knock against Pakistan, Afghanistan batter Ibrahim Zadran made a big statement after winning the Player of the Match (POTM) award for his swashbuckling 87-run knock in the ICC World Cup 2023. Zadran dedicated his Player of the Match award to the Afghans who had been deported from Pakistan. “I am feeling very glad for myself and for my country. I want to dedicate this man of the match award to those who are sent back to Afghanistan from Pakistan,” Zadran said in a post-match presentation.

Zadran top-scored with 87, Shah was unbeaten on 77, and Gurbaz hit 65 off 53 balls. Captain Hasmatullah Shahidi also made an important contribution, scoring 48 runs off 45 balls.

“I wanted to go out there with a positive mind and positive intent, and I did it. We (Gurbaz and himself) have played a lot of cricket with each other, we have good communication while running between the wickets as we have been playing together since under-16 days,” said the Afghanistan opener.

Zadran hailed Gurbaz and said that the opener helped and supported him. The duo stitched up a solid 130-run partnership stand.

“The way Gurbaz supported me – that helped me and we got the momentum in our favour. I am feeling great for myself and my country,” he added.

The state-run radio of Pakistan has reported that 3,248 Afghan refugees were returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan in a single day on October 21, Khaama Press reported. According to Pakistani authorities, more than 51,000 Afghans have been deported since the deadline for the expulsion of undocumented migrants was announced.

According to a Pakistan-based news daily, the government’s decision to restrict border crossing to only those with valid passports and visas will come into effect on November 1, and after that, no one will be allowed to cross the Pak-Afghan border using a Pakistani identity card or Afghan permit. Approximately 1.73 million Afghans in Pakistan lack legal documentation.

Afghanistan created history by trouncing Pakistan for the first time in ODIs, courtesy of a fabulous batting display by the top four batters and Noor Ahmed’s outstanding three-wicket haul.

Pakistan’s unhappy knack of slipping on banana skins resurfaced yet again as it turned out to be a red-letter day for the Afghanistan side as they caused a massive upset by trouncing ‘Men in Green’ by 8 wickets in Chennai.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65) Ibrahim Zadran (87) and Rahmat Shah (77)* starred with the bat to help Afghanistan register a commanding upset triumph.

Former England cricket team skipper Michael Vaughan took to social media to brutally troll Pakistan following their shocking defeat against Afghanistan in the Cricket World Cup 2023 in Chennai on Monday. Pakistan were completely outplayed by Afghanistan who chased down the 284-run target with three batters scoring half-centuries after a brilliant show from spinner Noor Ahmad. Vaughan referred to Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur‘s comments regarding the team’s unofficial anthem ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ not playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad when they were defeated by hosts India on October 14.

“I presume ‘Dil Dil’ Pakistan wasn’t played in Chennai today,” Vaughan posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Earlier, Arthur complained about Pakistan’s lack of support in the ground during the match against India but his comments were criticised heavily by experts and fans alike.

Coming to the match,  Afghanistan put on a superb batting and bowling display to hand Pakistan a stunning eight-wicket defeat in the Cricket World Cup 2023.

Chasing a 283-run target, Afghanistan were lifted by Ibrahim Zadran (87), Rahmat Shah (77 not out) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65) as they scored 286-2 in 49 overs.

Pakistan had made 282-7 in their 50 overs with 74 from skipper Babar Azam and 58 from opener Abdullah Shafique but the total did not prove tough enough for a clinical Afghanistan.

Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, with a 45-ball 48 not out, hit the winning boundary as Afghanistan improved upon their highest ODI chase of 274 against the UAE in Dubai in 2014.

The win is Afghanistan’s first-ever over Pakistan in eight ODIs and came eight days after their shock victory over defending champions England in Delhi.

A spirited Afghanistan team continued its giant-killing spree to literally push Pakistan on the brink of elimination with a eight-wicket victory in a Cricket World Cup game on Monday. On a challenging Chepauk track, a target of 283 was certainly not the easiest of chases but Kolkata Knight Riders’ Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65 off 53 balls) teed off in style while his partner Ibrahim Zadran (87 off 113 balls) dropped anchor at the other end in an opening stand of 130 which laid the perfect platform. While experience is worth its weight in gold in these kind of games, Afghanistan did well enough to chase down the target in 49 overs, exposing the frailties of Pakistan bowling unit which just didn’t turn up on the day.

Having lost seven ODIs against Pakistan, Afghanistan was missing out on that finishing touches which was required and all the four batters did play their parts to perfection in what was their highest run-chase in history of 50 over format.

This is Afghanistan’s second win after beating defending champions England in New Delhi and with four points are now placed sixth in mid-table muddle.

Pakistan, for time being, stay put on fifth place but after a hat-trick of defeats, another loss against South Africa later this week, will in all likelihood shut the knock-out doors for the 1992 champions.

Seasoned Rahmat Shah (77 not out off 84 balls), whose straight six down the ground off Hasan Ali was a visual treat, showed admirable situational awareness even as Pakistan bowlers did put pressure on him during the second phase of the chase. He repeated the same shot off the same bowler to put Afghanistan within sniffing distance of victory.

He got good support from skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (48 not out, 45 balls), who reverse swept an off-colour Shadab Khan against the turn during crucial juncture which spoke volumes about his temperament. The duo added 96 runs for the third wicket in some of the most difficult batting conditions. The sense of happiness and elation after hitting the winning boundary was there for everyone to see.

The 21,000 odd sporting crowd at Chepauk also gave the team a nice standing ovation.

The match that was played on the same track as the India versus Australia game had both grip and turn on offer but 282 for 7 by Pakistan was by no means a poor effort if one takes quality spin bowling unit that Afghanistan possesses.

If spin is Afghanistan’s strength, it is certainly Pakistan’s biggest weakness as bowlers of Shadab (0/49 in 8 overs) and Usama Mir (0/55 in 8 overs)’s quality don’t win World Cups.

In Indian domestic cricket, there are better wrist spinners than these two and one of the best in the world, Yuzvendra Chahal hasn’t got a look-in in this Indian team.

When Afghanistan started chase, Gurbaz, who hit nine fours and a six, wasn’t overawed by Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan or Haris Rauf.

The Pakistanis bowled too many boundaries in the first 15 overs as Gurbaz took the likes of Rauf and leg-spinner Usama Mir to the cleaners and also hit off-spinner Iftikhar Ahmed for his only six.

Strong on the off-side, Gurbaz repeatedly peppered the point and backward point region as Pakistani bowlers bowled short and wide outside the off-stump.

In one Rauf over, eighth of the innings, Gurbaz got four boundaries and save the last one, which was a streaky inside edge, three were cuts or slashes through point region.

Pakistan’s fielding was rubbish to say the least as most fielders tried putting blame on others in full public view, including skipper Babar Azam, who lost his cool after failing to stop overthrows.

Earlier Babar struck a composed half-century before useful cameos by lower-order batters guided Pakistan to a reasonably good total if one takes the track into account.

Opener Abdullah Shafique made 58 off 75 balls and Babar got 74 off 92 balls, but had it not been for the efforts of Iftikhar Ahmed and the returning Shadab Khan, Pakistan would have finished with far less than what they eventually achieved.

While Iftikhar smashed his way to a 27-ball 40, Shadab contributed a breezy 40 in 38 deliveries.

Expecting a slow pitch, the Afghans moved in with four spinners. However, the track turned out to be better than expected.

The Pakistani openers Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq (17) began on a cautious note and managed a 56-run stand.

While they brought up the side’s 50 by the eighth over, Shafique was targeting pacer Naveen-ul-Haq.

Also, spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman was expensive in the first 10 overs of the powerplay.

The first delivery of the second powerplay saw the Afghans earn the first breakthrough, with Imam falling to speedster Azmatullah Omarzai off a short ball.

Nevertheless, the Men in Green barely panicked as Shafique joined forces with skipper Babar and put up a 54-run partnership for the second wicket.

At this point, spinners Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Kahn operated in tandem to keep things under control, not allowing the two batters in the middle to free their arms.

In the meantime, Shafique brought up his third ODI half-century, while Babar looked to mix aggression with caution.
