The last time the Indian men’s cricket team shared the room with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it was the Ahmedabad dressing room filled with an atmosphere of gloom, heartbreak and distraught, but today, as the same team met PM Modi at his residence, it was a surreal display of pride and joy. The former meeting took place in the Indian team’s dressing room on November 19, last year, as the Men in Blue after 10 dominating victories failed to cross the final hurdle against Australia in the ODI World Cup at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

The defeat had left the entire nation heartbroken, as India had not just lost a World Cup after such an unprecedented show of dominance, but it once again fell short on the home turf, against arch-rivals Australia, a team that had already given plenty of heartbreaks to India in the 75-something years of rivalry.

As the wait for the next ICC trophy — after the Champions Trophy win in 2013 — crossed a decade, the teary-eyed players left for their dressing rooms after post-match presentations, to completely express their emotions after once again despite giving their best, they fell short of the finishing line.

During these heartbreaking moments, PM Modi came to cheer up the nation’s most cherished and beloved group of boys. He went to each player one by one, shaking their hands or hugging them, comforting them with his words, and asking them to keep their morale up.

He went to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two of the country’s biggest cricketing superstars, consoling them by saying “It happens, you have won 10 games straight” and urged them to keep each other’s morale up.

The two legends didn’t know then, they would be standing in a completely different position a few months later.

Fast forward to 2024, and times have changed for good. From gloomy, depressed faces after a defeat at Ahmedabad, Men in Blue returned to India as undefeated T20 champions of the world, battling different and difficult opponents, conditions, pitches, and match situations on their way towards the championship trophy.

The players’ faces are filled with pride, jubilation and joy. There is a sense of relief to have finally secured a World Cup as a group, which includes stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, and head coach Rahul Dravid, whose journey towards immortality and greatness was stopped by Australia just seven months ago.

The promise made to the nation was finally fulfilled in the Caribbean, which was, interestingly, the place where one of the most heartbreaking chapters of Indian cricket was written back in 2007: A first-round exit in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007.

It was after this humiliating exit under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy that Men in Blue went on to win the T20 World Cup (2007), ICC Cricket World Cup (2011) and ICC Champions Trophy (2013) back-to-back-to-back under MS Dhoni to complete a memorable white-ball cricket treble. Dravid, then the captain, finally returned back home with his first big trophy in international cricket, as a coach.

After their T20 WC triumph, players were seen laughing, and interacting joyously with the Prime Minister, as they talked about the tournament. Prime Minister posed for a picture with the entire team of players and coaches, holding the trophy along with skipper Rohit and coach Dravid.

During their meeting with the Prime Minister, the ‘Men in Blue’ wore a special jersey sporting two stars over the BCCI’s emblem. The stars represented the two T20 World Cup wins. The word ‘CHAMPIONS’ was written on the jersey in bold letters.

Earlier today, the T20 World Cup-winning Indian team touched down in the national capital, to a warm welcome from fans, who were eagerly waiting to catch a glimpse of their favourite heroes and the trophy.

The winning team along with the support staff, their families, and the media were stuck in Barbados, as the island nation was hit by Hurricane Beryl. Finally, they boarded the special flight organised by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah on Wednesday.

Team India reached the ITC Maurya Hotel, where they also cut a special cake featuring the T20 World Cup trophy to celebrate the historic win.

As many winning teams do across all sports, the Rohit-led side is scheduled to have an open-top bus ride in Mumbai at Marine Drive and the iconic Wankhede Stadium from 5:00 pm onwards to celebrate an occasion, the nation has witnessed after 13 long years.

On the verge of equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s record number of ODI centuries, star India batter Virat Kohli on Tuesday said he had never thought of accumulating so many runs and hundreds when he began his career. Kohli has been in terrific form with the bat in the ongoing ODI World Cup with one century and three half centuries in six matches. He scored 103 not out against Bangladesh in Pune on October 19 for his 48th ODI hundred, one short of Tendulkar’s world record.

He made 95 against New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 22, five runs short of matching Tendulkar’s record 49 tons in ODI cricket.

“If we talk about cricket, I had never thought of achieving all, as in where my career is and how god has blessed me (with) such a career span and performances,” Kohli told Star Sports.

“I had always dreamt I’d do this, but I had never thought things would pan out this way exactly. Nobody can plan these things, the way your journey is going, and the way things unfold in front of you.” “I hadn’t thought that I’d score so many hundreds and so many runs in these 12 years.” He said he had to change his “discipline and lifestyle” as he found himself lacking in professionalism at some point in his career.

“My only focus was that I should perform well for the team and win games for the team from difficult situations. For that, I made quite a few changes along the way regarding discipline and lifestyle.” “I always had the drive in me, but I lacked the professionalism. Now, I have a single-minded focus on how I want to play the game, and after that, the results I’ve achieved are from playing that way itself,” he added.

Kohli, who made his India debut in 2008, said the effort put in by a cricketer is always recognised by the sport.

“The game recognises effort. Honestly, that’s what I have learnt from my career.

“I’ve played cricket by giving my hundred per cent on the field, and the blessings I have got from it have been given to me by God, and I had never thought things would have unfolded this way,” he said.

Kohli will have the chance to equal Tendulkar’s feat in India’s next match against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on Thursday.

With his third World Cup hundred, the left-handed batsman became the second South African to score the most World Cup hundreds for the Proteas. With four tons, only AB de Villiers has more World Cup tons.

Herschelle Gibbs, Hashim Amla, and Faf du Plessis stay below Quinton de Kock with two World Cup hundreds.

Quinton de Kock holds the second place for most hundreds scored by a designated wicketkeeper in the ODI World Cup. Only Kumar Sangakkara is ahead of De Kock with four tons.

AB de Villiers and Zimbabwean cricketer Brendan Taylor stand in third and fourth place with two centuries in the tournament.

In the Test format, De Kock scored 3300 runs in 54 matches with a strike rate of 70.93.

The left-handed batsman made his debut in the ODI format in 2013 following that he has played 150 matches and scored 6583 runs with a strike rate of 96.75.

Coming to the match between South Africa and Bangladesh in the 23rd ODI World Cup match, Quinton de Kock played a magnificent inning and scored 174 runs from 140 balls with a strike rate of 124.29. The wicketkeeper-batsman smashed 15 fours and seven sixes.

Heinrich Klaasen continued his stellar form and scored 90 runs from 49 balls with a strike rate of 183.67. Klaasen hit two fours and eight sixes in the game.

Apart from Klaasen and Kock, Proteas skipper Aiden Makram played a 60-run knock from 69 balls.

Bangladesh displayed a disappointing performance with the ball. Only Hasan Mahmud bagged two wickets from his six-over spell and gave away 67 runs.

Other than that, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shoriful Islam, and Shakib picked up one wicket each in their respective spells.

De Kock and Klaasen took South Africa at 382/5 in the first inning.

Heinrich Klaasen said he had “worked my whole life” for a superb hundred that powered South Africa to a crushing 229-run World Cup win over champions England. Klaasen’s 109 was the centrepiece of South Africa’s huge total of 399-7 in Mumbai on Saturday. His innings was all the more impressive for being made in oppressively hot and humid conditions he likened to “batting in a sauna”, with Klaasen repeatedly suffering from cramp as temperatures soared to 36 degrees at the Wankhede Stadium.

Klaasen also received superb support from Marco Jansen during a commanding sixth-wicket partnership of 151 in a mere 77 balls.

Jansen made 75 not out, his maiden one-day international fifty, before reverting to a more familiar role of left-arm quick with a couple of early wickets as England slumped to 170.

Klaasen, after what was just his fourth hundred in 45 ODIs, paid tribute to Jansen for seeing him through to the landmark.

“I had to dig really, really deep there. I didn’t have any energy left,” said Klaasen.

“My partner Marco played a big part in that,” added the 32-year-old. “He told me that he’s got me and that I’m not allowed to walk off the field if I don’t score a hundred.

‘Breathing in hot air’

“It was like just breathing in hot air. Every time you try to run it’s just sapping more and more energy and then at the end of the day your body just doesn’t want to work with you anymore. It was just like almost running in a sauna for the whole innings.

“But you’ve got to dig deep for your country as well, I’ve worked my whole life for it, so it’s a great moment.”

This was a timely win for South Africa after a stunning loss to the Netherlands, a non-Test nation, threatened to derail a World Cup campaign that had started with wins over Sri Lanka and Australia.

“The defeat to the Netherlands was a tough loss but one defeat does not make a bad team,” said Klaasen. “This was a fantastic performance.”

Klaasen, meanwhile hailed the performance of opener Reeza Hendricks, who made 85 following the late withdrawal of Proteas captain Temba Bavuma through illness, as an example of South Africa’s team spirit.

“Reeza got a late call, I think it was about 10 minutes before, five minutes before the coin toss that Temba is down.

“To perform like that, and the shots he played under pressure, shows where we are as a South African cricket group.”

Pakistan’s Problems In Cricket World Cup 2023: Haris Rauf’s Poor Game Awareness, Lack Of Good Spinners https://artifexnews.net/pakistans-problems-in-cricket-world-cup-2023-haris-raufs-poor-game-awareness-lack-of-good-spinners-4502997/ Sat, 21 Oct 2023 18:54:20 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/pakistans-problems-in-cricket-world-cup-2023-haris-raufs-poor-game-awareness-lack-of-good-spinners-4502997/ Read More “Pakistan’s Problems In Cricket World Cup 2023: Haris Rauf’s Poor Game Awareness, Lack Of Good Spinners” »

]]>

It can only happen with a Pakistan team. In the same match, its bowlers can bowl an eye-popping 152 dot balls and yet end up conceding a massive 367 runs in 50 overs. It happened against Australia in a World Cup match on Friday when there was no ‘bad’ element in Pakistan’s bowling. There was only ‘good’ and ‘ugly’ facets — the two extremes that has gone on to define Pakistan cricket since time immemorial. There are no half measures for Pakistan. At one end, they pegged Australia for what was worth half the total number of overs and at the other end, they were hammered for 29 fours and 19 sixes.

And, this was after their bowling department’s leader Shaheen Shah Afridi produced the best individual bowling figures of this edition — 5 for 54.

It is now well documented that Naseem Shah’s absence is hurting the team badly but even then, Haris Rauf’s lack of game awareness and not having spinners of international quality have affected the team’s performance.

Rauf, for example, hasn’t got a hang of Indian tracks where he is either bowling too full or too short — the latter in most cases — which has hurt the team like no end.

Rauf has been hit for 11 sixes in four games and that is more than two sixes per game, which isn’t a great piece of statistic for a tearaway quick who is supposed to intimidate the batters.

He went for 24 in his first over against Australia and 3/83 in 8 overs aren’t numbers that he would like to remember.

Legendary Wasim Akram, who is an expert on Pakistani show ‘Pavilion’, made a telling comment about Rauf.

“Rauf till he doesn’t play domestic cricket, he will have problems in ODIs. In T20, you can survive as it is only four overs and you expect batters to attack. But you learn ODI bowling when you play domestic (red ball) cricket. I want to see Rauf bowl six balls back of length (three quarter) on stumps,” Akram said on the show.

There were problems aplenty for the Pakistani bowlers, with regards to planning.

With the side boundaries being 62 or 63m, the best length is fuller and mostly on block-hole which is expected from a fast bowler, who has a whippy slinging action.

The straight boundary at Chinnaswamy Stadium is 72m and yorker length deliveries wouldn’t be easy to hit straight.

But Rauf kept on pegging it on shorter side and gave enough width to Mitchell Marsh and David Warner to play horizontal bat shot on both sides of the wicket.

Talking about game awareness, former skipper Misbah ul Haq also had an observation about Hasan Ali which was equally scathing.

Despite knowing that Marsh’s favourite area is the arc between square leg and mid-wicket as he plays the pick-up shot (pull or flick) pretty well, Hasan got his square leg fielder well inside the 30-yard circle and kept a third man for the streaky edges.

As far as leg-spinner Usama Mir is concerned, he was seen bowling with five men on the on-side, yet he never bothered to bowl a googly to right hander Marsh.

On a track where the ball isn’t turning much, the best shot is straight hits and unlike the Pakistanis, who tried to cut or pull (Iftikhar and Rizwan) Adam Zampa’s deliveries pitched on stumps, the Australians went for the jugular and succeeded.

Bowling length balls with mid-on and mid-off fielder being kept up and third man posted at the boundary made no sense if one checks the wagon wheel of the two Australian centurions.

Aaqib Javed, just before the start of the World Cup, had spoken about how Rauf would need a good spinner at the other end during the middle overs in order to make a difference.

In all fairness, good leg-spinners need good captains and in Babar Azam, neither Shadab nor Usama have found a tactician, who would set wicket-taking in-out field for them when they are scurrying for cover.

Pakistan’s failure as a bowling unit lies as much with the bowlers as with Babar’s lack of tactical nous.

Cricket World Cup 2023: Who Could Replace Hardik Pandya Against New Zealand? https://artifexnews.net/cricket-world-cup-2023-who-could-replace-hardik-pandya-against-new-zealand-4501289/ Sat, 21 Oct 2023 16:22:10 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/cricket-world-cup-2023-who-could-replace-hardik-pandya-against-new-zealand-4501289/ Read More “Cricket World Cup 2023: Who Could Replace Hardik Pandya Against New Zealand?” »

]]>

India’s ever-dependent all-rounder Hardik Pandya picked up an injury during the match against Bangladesh on Thursday and will miss the next match of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup against New Zealand on Sunday. “He will not be taking the flight to Dharamsala with the team on 20th October and will now join the team directly in Lucknow where India play England,” the BCCI said. Hardik, the vice-captain, hurt his left ankle while trying to stop the ball with his foot and was taken out of the field by the support staff. He was later flown to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore for treatment.

India, with four wins in four matches, have the momentum to go all the way this time but an injury to Hardik is bound to shake the team combination as the 2011 champions lack a like-for-like replacement, who can bowl seam and contribute with the bat as well.

Hardik plays a unique role in the Indian cricket team as having him gives India a sixth bowling option and a quality batter. Before the injury, the medium-pacer had bowled 16 overs and scalped five wickets in the first three World Cup matches.

“He’s a proper fast bowler, who can crank up good speed. So that gives us an advantage. That gives us that luxury of playing three spinners and three seamers as well,” Rohit had earlier commented on Hardik’s importance to the team.

Who could replace Hardik Pandya?

India have the option of bringing in Suryakumar Yadav or Ishan Kishan, both of whom are specialist batters.

While Suryakumar Yadav can accelerate the innings quickly, Ishan Kishan, who scored 47 against Afghanistan on October 11, gives India a left-handed batting option.

However, this will reduce Rohit Sharma’s bowling options to just five, leaving no room for variation.

If India opt for a specialist bowler but still want some batting strength, Ravichandran Ashwin is the frontrunner for the role. The lower order will have Ravindra Jadeja, Ashwin and Shardul Thakur.

The other option for India is to replace Hardik Pandya with a batter and bring in Ashwin in place of Shardul Thakur, who has endured a challenging tournament so far. Thakur has conceded 102 runs in 17 overs this World Cup and taken just two wickets.

However, this playing 11 will mean India are left with just two pacers – Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

If the Dharamshala pitch proves advantageous for seam bowlers, India might choose Mohammed Shami as Thakur’s replacement but will have to compromise on their batting strength.

An alternative approach could involve replacing Hardik with a specialist batsman, bringing in Ashwin instead of Thakur, and substituting Kuldeep Yadav with Shami. This strategy will keep the team’s batting depth intact while strengthening the bowling lineup to adapt to match conditions.

Finding the balance between bowling and batting will also be based on the pitch conditions. In the last two matches at Dharamshala, pacers have taken the majority of the wickets.

These permutations and combinations prove how vital Hardik Pandya’s role is in the Indian team. Rohit Sharma will be in a conundrum to find the best 11 that can make up for Pandya’s absence.

“No one in the world really. He is that good an all-rounder at the moment, and when you think back into the history of the way he’s been performing, whenever he’s not playing for any team there is always a balance issue. He provides that great stability,” Hayden told ESPNcricinfo.

The vice-captaincy will also be changed during Hardik’s absence and will likely see KL Rahul take up the role of Rohit Sharma’s deputy.

India play England on October 29, where Hardik Pandya is slated to return to the field.

Sadeera Samarawickrama displayed unwavering composure in his unbeaten half-century as he guided Sri Lanka to a clinical five-wicket win over the Netherlands and secure their first victory in this World Cup in Lucknow on Saturday. South African-born Sybrand Engelbrecht (70) and Logan van Beek (59) led a remarkable recovery with maiden half-centuries to help the Netherlands post a fighting 262 after they opted to bat. In reply, Dutch off-spinner Aryan Dutt (3/44) snared Kusal Perera (5) and skipper Kusal Mendis (8) inside the powerplay, but Sri Lanka never lost sight of the target on a dry and spinning Ekana pitch with Samarawickrama anchoring their chase without taking any risks.

Lending solidity to the middle-order, Samarawickrama, who slammed a maiden ODI hundred against Pakistan earlier, got to a well-deserved half-century — his sixth in ODIs — in 53 balls en route to his unbeaten knock of 91 to seal Sri Lanka’s chase with 10 balls to spare.

This was bottom-placed Sri Lanka’s first win after enduring three losses on the trot in the 10-team showpiece event.

Pathum Nissanka (54; 52b) came up with a third straight half-century to set it up before Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka took the chase away from the Netherlands in a 77-run fourth-wicket stand.

For the Dutch bowlers, the execution was missing unlike their upset win over South Africa at Dharamsala three days back.

They either strayed on the leg, or bowled wide on the off-stump even as the Lankan batters were happy to take singles and twos to keep the required run-rate near the five-run mark.

The left-handed Asalanka hit two boundaries and the only six of the innings when he broke the shackles and stepped out to punish Dutt.

Just when the Lankan duo of Samarawickrama and Asalanka was in cruise mode, Dutt broke the partnership cleaning up the left-hander in his last over that also pumped up the Dutch camp.

But without any scoreboard pressure — 82 required off 104 balls — the seasoned Dhananjaya de Silva played sensibly, rotating the strike to give the well-set Samarawickrama more opportunities.

The duo, however, failed to complete the chase as De Silva got out in the 47th over after being bowled by Colin Ackermann.

But there were no further mishaps and it was Dushan Hemantha who hit the winning runs, hitting Acerkmann for a boundary in the penultimate over.

Earlier, the 35-year-old Engelbrecht, who had retired from all forms of cricket after playing for Cape Cobras in South Africa in 2016 only to be back playing for the Netherlands, was at his best during a gritty 82-ball 70.

Engelbrecht, who came in at No 7, hit one six and four fours in his knock and shared a 130-run partnership with No 8 batter Logan van Beek. Van Beek also secured a maiden fifty as the pair turned the tide for the Dutch after they were reeling at 91 for six in the 22nd over.

Comeback man Kasun Rajitha (4/50) and their in-form left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka (4/49) were the pick of the Lankan bowlers but they lacked support at the other end as the Dutchmen made rapid progress following their seventh-wicket partnership.

Fifteen years after a young Engelbrecht in Proteas colours took a flying catch to dismiss Virat Kohli in India’s U-19 World Cup triumph in 2008, the Dutch all-rounder is living a dream.

Playing top-tier cricket did not seem realistic for Engelbrecht as he slipped into oblivion while pursuing his MBA.

But he picked the bat again after his family moved to the Netherlands in 2021, and head coach Ryan Cook gave him an ODI debut against New Zealand in the World Cup.

Engelbrecht’s moment of reckoning came here when he led a stunning recovery using his wealth of experience.

In a clash between the two bottom-rung teams, Sri Lanka held the upper hand by reducing the Netherlands to 91/6.

On a high after their stunning upset win over South Africa four days back, Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards had opted to bat after winning the toss but things unfolded differently.

Engelbrecht, however, refused to buckle under pressure and took charge of the proceedings, taking the spin duo of Dushan Hemantha and Dhananjay de Silva to the cleaners in the middle overs.

Sri Lanka let the game slip away from their grasp by not bringing back their pace duo of Madushanka and Rajitha, who returned as late as in the 40th over.

The Lankan pace duo had built up pressure by dismissing the Dutch top-five inside 19 overs.

Batting maestro Virat Kohli was at his best on Thursday night as he scored 103 not out, his 48th ODI century, guiding India to a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in Pune. The chase master rose to the occasion once again for India as the side hunted down the target of 257 runs against Bangladesh in 41.3 overs. It was also India’s fourth consecutive win in the tournament. Shubman Gill (53) and Rohit Sharma (48) also impressed with the bat but Kohli’s century stole the show.

However, after the game, Kohli showed a beautiful gesture that was missed by many.

During the presentation ceremony, Kohli, who won the Player of the Match award against Bangladesh, corrected the presenter when he missed to mention Ravichandran Ashwin‘s name and mistakenly called Kohli as one player from India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad to feature in the 2023 mega event.

“You have won a World Cup before. So you are the one guy in the dressing room knows what it is like,” said presenter.

“And Ash as well. Just the two of us from 2011,” Kohli corrected the presenter quickly.

Watch it here:

The legend of Virat Kohli continued to grow exponentially as he reached within handshaking distance of Sachin Tendulkar‘s world record of 49 hundreds during India’s walk-in-the-park seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in a World Cup game on Thursday.

Kohli, who plans 50-over chases with a precision of a surgeon, remained unbeaten on 103 off 97 balls as India knocked off the 258-run target with as many as 51 balls remaining. India have now make it four wins out of four games and one more win would virtually put them in semi-finals.

While Kohli hit six fours and four sixes, it was his exemplary running between the wickets in pursuit of his 48th hundred that would be etched in the memory for the longest time.

But credit should also go to Ravindra Jadeja (2/38 in 10 overs) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/41 in 10 overs), who were exemplary covering all bases in absence of Hardik Pandya, who hobbled off the field after twisting his left ankle.
