Pakistan’s white ball specialist Iftikhar Ahmed at times has “felt like a tailender” when the team management has asked him to bat as low as number 7 and 8 in limited over games for the national team in the recent past. In an interaction with the media in Faisalabad where players have assembled for the Champions Cup tournament, Iftikhar said he didn’t consider himself a middle-order batter. “I am not a middle-order batter, I am a lower-order batter. I am not an all-rounder, I am a tailender. If you see, I bat at No.7 or 8. And if you look at the all-rounders and middle order batters around the world, you would see they bat at Nos 4 or 5. But I play at No.7 and 8 and I think of myself as a tailender,” he said.

Iftikhar, 34, who has played 4 Tests, 28 ODIs and 66 T20Is did face a disappointing run in recent internationals and also struggled in the World T20 Cup this year.

Critics have questioned his utility to the team with many younger options now emerging from the junior level.

Across his T20I career, Iftikhar in his 55 innings has batted 25 times at No. 5, 11 times at No.7 and 10 times at No.6.

In ODIs, Iftikhar out of 24 knocks, has batted 16 times at number 6.

Iftikhar also said that he was keen to leave a mark in the Champions Cup as he believed he still had a lot to offer to the national team.

He said the Pakistan team had some quality players and was confident the team would soon bounce back in the white ball format matches coming up this year and before the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

Pakistan cricket team batting stalwarts Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed are in the news again for the wrong reasons. After the nation’s group stage exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup, many former players, experts and fans have called for a major reshuffling in the team, and for many senior players to be chopped off. Whilst no major changes are likely to be made yet, a video has resurfaced across X, showing Rizwan and Iftikhar struggling against a Pakistani net bowler in a practice session.

In the video that has rapidly gone viral, Rizwan and Iftikhar are being beaten by pace and bounce multiple times. The bowler, however, is not Shaheen Shah Afridi or Naseem Shah, but local bowler Nouman Khan Khaira.

Fans gave no mercy to Rizwan or Iftikhar.

“These local boys should be taken into the Pakistani team and those playing for the side should be rested,” said one user on X.

“They even struggled against part time software engineers of USA,” joked another user on Instagram.

Rizwan struggled for form during the 2024 T20 World Cup. Despite finishing as Pakistan’s second-highest run-scorer, he batted at a disappointing strike rate of just 90. Most notably, Rizwan failed to guide Pakistan to a victory against India despite being well set during the run chase.

Iftikhar, on the other hand, made just 23 runs in two games, and was dropped from the playing XI.

Pakistan’s early exit

Pakistan exited the 2024 T20 World Cup in the group stage, after back-to-back losses to co-hosts USA and then arch-rivals India in their opening two games. The results led to many criticising Pakistan captain Babar Azam and the rest of the unit, with Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi promising a “major surgery”.

However, recent reports have suggested that Naqvi is unlikely to make large-scale changes in order to avoid conflict with the senior players.

As the cricket world comes to senses following Pakistan’s embarrassing defeat against Afghanistan in a Cricket World Cup 2023 match on Monday, a video has emerged on social media that has left fans baffled. In the video, Pakistan all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed could be seen talking to someone. But, fans failed to spot anyone in the frame that the Pakistan star could be talking to. The video has spread like wildfire on social media, leaving cricket lovers gobsmacked in an attempt to solve this mystery.

Many fans have shared the video across social media platforms, asking if anyone can explain who Iftikhar is talking to. But, there’s little evidence to solve the mystery. Here’s the video:

After the match, Iftikhar admitted that Pakistan’s spinners have been widely ineffective in the World Cup so far.

“We do have finger spinners in our team, including me and (Mohammad) Nawaz. Yes, the role of our spinners hasn’t been that effective here. But we will keep trying to improve. That’s all we can do,” Iftikhar said after the match to reporters.

“Frankly speaking, this was a wicket of 300-plus. But, their bowlers did trouble us. As a batting unit, we need to improve.”

Even fielding is something that has left the Pakistan team down this tournament.

“We made a lot of mistakes during our fielding, I admit. But, we need to improve; that’s the only option we have for now. If you are playing against a world-class side, you have to perform at a similar level across departments. Only then you will be able to survive.”

Pakistan now have to win their remaining games and also hope for some favourable results if they are to qualify for the semi-finals.

“We can definitely bounce back. There’s no doubt that we possess the abilities, and we have world-class players in our side.”

“We still have a lot of matches left. But we have to win them all to get into the top four,” Iftikhar signed off.

Asia Cup 2023: Sri Lanka will now face India in final© AFP

Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by two wickets via DLS method in a super four match to secure their place in the final of the Asia Cup in Colombo on Thursday. Mohammad Rizwan (86 not out) and Iftikhar Ahmed (47) put up a 108-run stand to steer Pakistan to a commanding 252 for 7 after rain reduced the match to 42-overs a side contest. However, Kusal Mendis (91) led a valiant batting display alongside Charith Asalanka (49 not out) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (48) as Sri Lanka overhauled the target in 42 overs.

Sri Lanka will take on India in final on Sunday.

Earlier, opener Abdullah Shafique (52 off 69 balls) shared a 64-run stand with skipper Babar Azam (29) after opting to bat in the crucial fixture.

But it was Rizwan and Iftikhar who provided the final flourish, taking Pakistan across the 250-run mark.

For Sri Lanka, young pacer Matheesha Pathirana (3/64) was the most successful bowler.

Brief Scores: Pakistan 252 for 7 in 42 overs (Mohammad Rizwan (86 not out), Abdullah Shafique 52; Matheesha Pathirana 3/64) Sri Lanka 252 for 8 in 42 overs (Kusal Mendis 91 Charith Asalanka 49 not out; Iftikhar Ahmed 3/50).

Pakistan secured a comprehensive 238-run win over Nepal in the 2023 Asia Cup opener in Multan. With the tournament returning to Pakistan after a gap of 15 years, the home team put on a commanding performance despite a few hiccups. The highlight of the night was captain Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed‘s 214-run stand, the highest fifth-wicket partnership for Pakistan. Babar slammed 151 off 131 on his way to his 19th ODI century, while Iftikhar notched up his maiden ton.

Babar and Iftikhar propelled Pakistan to 342-6, before the bowlers bundled out Nepal for 104.

After the match, a journalist asked Iftikhar, who is commonly referred as “chacha” (uncle) by his teammates and fans, about his partnership with Babar. The journalist also called Babar as Iftikhar’s “bhatija” (nephew) during the conversation.

This drew a hilarious response from Iftikhar.

“Bhatija also gave confidence to chacha and chacha also gave confidence to bhatija. Babar is a world-class player. The way he handles strike rotation alleviates pressure. Consequently, we relished our time batting together,” Iftikhar said at the press box in Multan.

The win over Nepal gave Pakistan, who rose to world number one in the ODI rankings last week, an ideal start and perfect tune up for the high profile clash against arch-rivals India in Pallekele on Saturday.

The Asia Cup is being played on a hybrid model this year with Pakistan hosting four matches and Sri Lanka nine after India refused to tour Pakistan because of political tensions.

Pakistan batters Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed recorded the third-highest partnership for any wicket in the history of the ODI Asia Cup on Wednesday. The duo accomplished this during their Asia Cup 2023 campaign opener against Nepal in Multan. Iftikhar joined Babar when the team was struggling at 124/4 in 27.5 overs. From then on, they absolutely dismantled Nepal bowlers in the second half of the innings. Babar smashed 151 in 131 balls consisting of 14 fours and four sixes while Iftikhar smashed his maiden century, ending unbeaten on 109 in 71 balls, with 11 fours and four sixes.

Together, the duo added 214 runs for the fifth wicket. It is the third-highest partnership for any wicket in ODI Asia Cup history. The highest partnership is by Nasir Jamshed and Mohammed Hafeez (224 runs) against India in 2012, followed by a 223-run stand between Younis Khan and Shoaib Malik against Hong Kong in 2004.

This is also the highest fifth-wicket partnership in Asia Cup history.

This partnership between Babar and Iftikhar is also the highest partnership by a Pakistani pair for fourth wicket or below.

Iftikhar’s century came in just 67 balls, this is the fourth-fastest century by a Pakistan batter, with the fastest being by Shahid Afridi in just 37 balls.

Coming to the match, opting to bat first, Pakistan put on 342/6 in their 50 overs. Pakistan was reduced to 25/2 after Fakhar Zaman (14) and Imam-Ul-Haq (5) were dismissed.

Babar then had an 86-run stand for the third wicket with Mohammed Rizwan (44 in 50 balls, with six fours) which helped Pakistan get to three figures. After the quick dismissals of Rizwan and Agha Salman (5), Pakistan was left struggling at 124/4 and from then on Babar and Iftikhar helped Pakistan recover.

Later, Nepal got bundled out for 104 after Shadab Khan took a three-wicket haul. Apart from him, Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf took two wickets each.

Skipper Babar Azam hit a delightful 151 while Iftikhar Ahmed smashed his maiden ODI century as Pakistan thrashed minnows Nepal by 238 runs in the opening match of the Asia Cup in Multan on Wednesday. Babar and Iftikhar played pivotal roles in powering Pakistan to 342 for six after opting to bat. Babar (151 off 130) was involved in two crucial partnerships after a sedate start — first stitching 86 runs with Mohammad Rizwan (44 off 50) and then sharing a whirlwind 214 runs for the fifth wicket with Iftikhar (109 not out off 71 balls) — to take Pakistan to an imposing total.

Babar decorated his knock with 14 fours and four sixes, while Iftikhar, who was at his destructive best, struck 11 boundaries and four hits over the fence.

This was after Pakistan made an unimpressive start to their innings as they lost both the openers early.

It was always going to be a Herculean task for Nepal and it turned out to be so.

Kushal Bhurtel made a brave start to Nepal’s chase with consecutive boundaries off Shaheen Shah Afridi on the opening two balls, but it was shortlived as the ace left-arm made a superb comeback to dismiss him and Nepal skipper Rohit Paudel in the last two balls of the over.

Naseem Shah then got into the act in the next over and induced an outside edge from Aasif Sheikh which was pounced by Iftikhar in the first flip as Nepal slipped to 14 for 3.

Aarif Sheikh (26) and Sompal Karmi then tried to steady the ship with a 59-run fourth-wicket stand, before Haris Rauf went through the defence of the former.

Rauf then dismissed Nepal’s top-scorer Sompal (28) an over later to reduce the Himalayan nation to 82 for 5.

Thereafter, wickets fell like nine pins as Nepal batters failed to produce any resistance, eventually bundling out for 104 in 23.4 overs.

Leg-break bowler Shahdab Khan cleaned up Nepal’s tail to return with impressive figures of 4 for 27.

Earlier, while Fakhar Zaman (14) showed intent initially but failed to carry on as he was brilliantly caught by a diving Nepal wicketkeeper Aasif Sheikh off the bowling of Karan KC in the sixth over.

Pakistan suffered yet another blow soon when Imam-ul-Haq was found short of the crease while attempting a single that was not for the taking. A direct throw from Nepal captain Rohit Paudel ended his innings.

Babar was then joined at the crease by wicketkeeper-batter Rizwan and the duo stabilised Pakistan’s innings.

While Babar played the role of an anchor, Rizwan showed his attacking instincts during the 86-run stand for the third wicket which came off 111 balls.

But the start of their partnership was far from rosy as the duo struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking initially with Pakistan reaching 50 in the 12th over.

The Pakistani duo kept the scoreboard ticking with rotation of strike and hit the bad balls to the boundary to bring up the team’s 100 in the 22nd over.

Just when he was looking threatening, Rizwan fell to a direct hit at the non-striker’s end by Dipendra Singh Airee in search of a quick single. Rizwan paid the price for not grounding his bat, something not acceptable at the highest level.

While Babar kept one end steady, Salman Agha (5) failed to trouble the scorers much, falling prey to Sandeep Lamichhane.

Babar brought up his fifty with a double in the 29th over.

But Iftikhar’s arrival gave the much-needed boost to Pakistan’s innings as he played aggressively from the onset.

Iftikhar’s approach seemed to have inspired Babar as well as he too opened up his arms thereafter and found the boundaries at will.

Babar brought up his ton off 109 balls in the 42nd over.

The duo, especially Iftikhar, toyed with the Nepalese bowlers as it rained fours and sixes at will from there on. Iftikhar brought up his maiden ton off just 67 balls.

Babar fell just seven runs short of his personal best score.

Babar Azam was all fired up in the Asia Cup 2023 opener against Nepal in Multan on Wednesday. While he began on a slow note, he battled cramps and grew gradually in confidence, the result was a 131-ball 151, consisting four sixes and 14 fours. Babar Azam (151) and Iftikhar Ahmed‘s (109 not out) centuries fired Pakistan to a huge 342 for 6. This was after Pakistan made an unimpressive start to their innings as they lost both the openers early.

While Fakhar Zaman (14) showed intent initially, he failed to carry on as he was brilliantly caught by a diving Nepal wicketkeeper Aasif Sheikh off the bowling of Karan KC in the sixth over.

Pakistan suffered yet another blow soon when Imam-ul-Haq was found short of the crease while attempting a single that was not for the taking. A direct throw from Nepal captain Rohit Paudel ended his innings. Babar was then joined at the crease by wicket-keeper batter Rizwan and the duo stabilised Pakistan’s innings.

But the start of their partnership was far from rosy as the duo struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking initially with Pakistan reaching 50 in the 12th over.

The Pakistani duo kept the scoreboard ticking with ones and two thereafter and hit the bad balls to the boundary to bring up the team’s 100 in the 22nd over.

The duo, especially Iftikhar, toyed with the Nepalese bowlers as it rained fours and sixes at will from there on. Iftikhar brought up his maiden ton off just 67 balls.

Babar Azam’s 151 is the highest score by a captain in Asia Cup. Babar Azam is also the fastest to score 19 centuries – which is a world record. He reached the mark in 102 innings, while Hashim Amla had reached the mark in 104 innings. Virat Kohli is the third fastest to the mark in 124 innings.

Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed 214-run stand is the third highest partnership for any wicket in Asia Cup.

“Babar is a great player, World No. 1 player. It’s an awesome feeling to bat with him. He rotates strike very well and we discussed about scoring a boundary when we get a loose ball. The wicket got better to bat on as the innings progressed,” Iftikhar Ahmed said after the knock.
