It has been a turbulent period for Indian football with Sunil Chhetri hanging his boots from international football and the dismissal of national team coach Igor Stimac resulting in a massive controversy. Chhetri retired from international football following the match against Kuwait and in the very next game, India crashed out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers following a controversial loss against Qatar. Since the news broke about Chhetri’s decision, both fans and experts have expressed concerns about the possible options who can replace the star striker. In the past year, multiple footballers like Manvir Singh and Sahal Abdul Samad have been used as the striker but no one has truly staked their claim for the position.

However, former Indian football team captain Subrata Paul believes that the management needs to give multiple chances to the young talents and that is the only way to find a proper replacement. Subrata, who recently conducted a goalkeeping workshop for ALPHA Sports Academy in Mumbai, said that Chhetri “was not made in a day” and similarly, it will take time and patience to find the next top striker for India.

“Chhetri was not made in a day. Before him, there was Bhaichung (Bhutia). When Bhaichung left, people were worried but Chhetri stepped up. He became a legend after playing for more than 15 years. He did not become Chhetri in just one year. We need to give other youngsters consistent chances to perform and put our trust in them. We will not be having this conversation five years later because someone will step up to take Chhetri’s position in the national side,” he added.

Meanwhile, Igor Stimac has criticised the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and its president Kalyan Chaubey following his dismissal as the national team coach. Subrata did not comment on Stimac’s allegations and said that he wants to concentrate on what he can do for the sport in India.

“Everybody is entitled to their opinions. We cannot control someone else’s thought process. However, what we can control is what can we do for Indian football. He has said what he feels but I personally believe in work. You will reap what you sow,” he concluded.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has decided to sack Indian football team head coach Igor Stimac after the national side failed to qualify for Round 3 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers. India were defeated 2-1 in their last match against Qatar – a result that meant the national side finished third in their group which also had Kuwait and Afghanistan. The decision came just weeks after Sunil Chhetri retired from international football after playing his final game against Kuwait. According to AIFF press release, the decision was taken after senior officials held a virtual meeting on Sunday.

“The meeting was chaired by AIFF Vice President Mr. NA Haris and the others in attendance were Mr. Menla Ethenpa (Member, Executive Committee and Chairperson, Finance Committee), Mr. Anilkumar Prabhakaran (Member, Executive Committee and Chairperson, Competitions Committee), Mr. IM Vijayan, (Chairman of the AIFF Technical Committee), Mr. Climax Lawrence (Member of the AIFF Technical Committee) and Mr. M. Satyanarayan (Acting Secretary General),” it stated.

“Noting the disappointing outcome of the Senior Men’s National Team’s FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification campaign, the members unanimously agreed that a new Head Coach would be best placed to take the team forward.”

“The meeting instructed the Acting Secretary General Mr. Satyanarayan to notify the current Head Coach Mr. Igor Stimac of its decision to terminate his engagement.”

“Pursuant to the above, a notice of termination has been issued to Mr. Stimac by the AIFF Secretariat, and he stands relieved of his obligations with immediate effect. The AIFF thanks Mr. Stimac for his service to the National Team and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the statement added.

India lost their game against Qatar 2-1 but the match was not without its fair share of controversies. Qatar’s equaliser came under the scanner when replays showed clearly that the ball crossed the line behind the goal before it was played back to the attacker who scored the goal.

In two week’s time India will play host to Kuwait at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on June 6. Ahead of the highly awaited FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Joint Qualification matchup, team India head coach Igor Stimac has given a positive update regarding the team. Stimac posted a video on X, which showed glimpses of the Blue Tigers’ training camp. “10 days in, players are responding well. Happy to see the senior players making first time campers feel comfortable and sharing their experience with the young boys on a daily basis,” read a post shared by the Croatian on X. India currently sit in second place behind Qatar in group A with 4 points to their name. The Blue Tigers’ only win of the campaign came against Kuwait (1-0) thanks to a late goal by Manvir Singh.

If India are to qualify for the next round of the qualifiers, a win against Kuwait is needed as their final game will be against Qatar, a side which has won all 4 qualifiers so far including a 3-0 victory against India in the first round of fixtures.

The game against Kuwait holds a lot of significance for Indian football as it will also be the last time the fans will get to see their highest ever goal scorer, Sunil Chhetri put on the number 11 shirt and represent the country as it will be his last international game which is sure to fuel some extra motivation through the squad.

The training camp comprises two squads of probables selected by Stimac which included 41 players. Once the camp comes to an end, Stimac will choose the final squad that will travel to play Kuwait and Qatar in the two important matches.

Indian football team coach Igor Stimac once again criticised the lack of preparation time for the side ahead of the Asian Games 2023 after his side was defeated by Saudi Arabia in the Round of 16 stage. The side, led by Sunil Chhetri, went down fighting as Saudi Arabia won the match 0-2 but Stimac believes that the result could have been way worse. There were doubts over India’s participation in the Asian Games followed by tussle with clubs over the availability of certain players. As a result, the team selection took a lot of time and the selected players were unable to practice together before travelling to China.

“Big lesson from this tournament is – Don’t send us anywhere if we can’t get our best players to represent the country. Also, do not send us anywhere if you can provide time for us to work and prepare well. We were here exposed while representing India. We took it well and the Indian fans can be proud of these boys who came here unprepared and without having played a single training session together,” he told RevSportz.

A formidable Saudi Arabia didn’t bring their ‘A’ game to the fore yet were strong enough to ward off a gutsy challenge from India winning their pre-quarterfinal match 2-0 in the men’s football competition.

There was no doubt about Saudi Arabia’s supremacy as forward Mohammed Khalil Marran’s opportunistic twin strikes in the 51st and 57th minute ended Sunil Chhetri-led India’s campaign at the continental event.

However, Igor Stimac’s players can hold their heads high with the kind of performance that they put in despite so much uncertainty and with AIFF sending a second-string side due to the obstinate attitude from the Indian Super League (ISL) organisers who refused to release top players.

Stimac took to X and mentioned that the players slept in airports and then completed recovery sessions at a park in China before taking part in the event. “From completing their sleep in airports to activation/recovery sessions in parks in China, I wanted to personally show my appreciation to all my players here at the Asian Games. These boys are thorough professionals and doing everything they can to make India proud. Against all odds, we have obtained our primary goal of qualifying for the last 16 and these players deserve all your love and praise,” Stimac wrote on X.

India finished at second place with one win, one loss, and a draw in Group A. India finished group stage matches with four points from three games.

India started their journey with a 5-1 loss against China in their first Group A match but won their second game against Bangladesh 1-0 and ended the group stage with a 1-1 draw against Myanmar.

Myanmar ended at third place with the same number of points while the host China topped group A with seven points.

In the match against Myanmar, India needed at least a draw to go to the next round of the event.

India head coach Igor Stimac has already put India’s victory over Bangladesh in his memory bank and is focusing on the game ahead. Less than 24 hours ago, India chalked out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bangladesh in the crucial Group A tie of Asian Games football in Hangzhou, China, raising hopes of the Blue Tigers’ entry in the second round after 13 years. Stimac remains deeply engrossed in planning his strategy for India’s next match against Myanmar, to be played on Sunday, September 24, 2023. “I am now thinking about the Myanmar match and we need to make sure we qualify,” Stimac told the-aiff.com from Hangzhou.

“Whether it is a draw or a win, we must qualify. At the same time, I must say that when we hit the pitch, we do it to win,” he added.

Currently, India is placed second in Group A behind China, who have six points. Both India and Myanmar have three points from two matches each, but India are ahead because they scored more goals than Myanmar. Even a draw against Myanmar would suffice for Sunil Chhetri and his men to advance to the second round as the second team from this group.

Stimac was hardly surprised by his team’s victory against Bangladesh. Rather, he feels surprised that some people are surprised by India’s comeback win after the 1-5 defeat against hosts China.

“We went to the match with a positive mindset. We were confident about what we could do and what we should do to win. It happened like that,” he said.

Asked whether the various difficulties the squad faced while going to the Asian Games had any effect on the team, Stimac said, “I never speak about the difficulties we faced before coming here. I always keep the players away from the heat and do not allow them to get influenced by the circumstances. I guide the players in a way that gets us results. I did exactly that here.”

“The players were patient, confident and they followed the instructions. We planned how to reach the attacking third and then put the pressure on. We played with three centre-backs in a 3-4-1-2 formation,” the coach said.

Stimac said that despite all the problems, India was confident about winning against Bangladesh. India’s neighbours have definitely come to Hangzhou after extensive training, but their game style and defensive tactics have not changed much. The Indians were aware of the way they could handle Bangladesh attacks.

“There was no magic involved in it. We won because of the technical points. I gave the boys a clear plan and they followed the guidelines,” was Stimac’s simple analysis of the game.

A sensational claim has rocked the Indian sporting fraternity, with a report claiming that the national football team’s squad was picked by head coach Igor Stimac on the basis of an astrologer’s suggestion. Stimac is said to have shared players’ data with an astrologer, who responded by picking the names of players who were recommended for a particular day and those who should be avoided. In fact, the report claims that the head coach was put in touch with the astrologer by the All India Football Federation general-secretary Kushal Das.

Worried whether the Indian team would qualify for the Asian Cup, Das sought an astrologer’s help and put him in touch with the head coach of the team, Stimac. As names were shared by Stimac with the Astrologer, responses of “good”; “can do very well. Needs to avoid overconfidence”; “a below-average day”; “a very good day for him but might get over aggressive”; “not recommended for the day” came, as per a report in Indian Express.

The report claims that about 100 messages were exchanged between Stimac and the astrologer between May and June last year. During this period, India played a friendly against Jordan as well as three Asian Cup qualifiers, against Cambodia, Afghanistan and Hong Kong.

The messages, as per the report, didn’t just feature inputs over selection matters in the team but also saw Stimac discuss injury news and substitution strategies with the astrologer.

“Hi dear Bhupesh, it was a pleasure meeting you and discussing future work! I would kindly ask you to provide opinion on the following players,” one of the messages read, as per the report.

For a game against Jordan, Stimac allegedly sought advice over the selection of an attacking midfielder. After the astrologer gave his preference of selection, Stimac is said to have gone with the inputs received.

Even Kushal Das admitted that he put Stimac in touch with the astrologer.

“I met him at a meeting. He (Sharma) had worked for a lot of telecom companies and Bollywood personalities. What they presented was that astrological timings and the current phase of players can help motivate people into taking the right decisions,” Das told the paper.

“That time, I was worried if India would qualify for the Asian Cup and so was Igor, let me be very honest. It was not a comfortable situation. For me, the most important thing was that India should qualify. So I told him (Sharma) that I will put you in touch with the coach and if he likes it, he thinks your services can be utilised, he can get back to me. Igor was very convinced and they were in Kolkata throughout,” he added.

Das also revealed that the astrologer was paid INR 12-15 lakh for his services over two months.

Indian football team lost to Iraq on penalties© Twitter

India men’s football head coach Igor Stimac expressed his frustration over the referee’s decision to award Iraq a penalty in their semifinal defeat in the Kings Cup. The Blue Colts went to toe against Iraq but ended up falling short in the end in a nerve-racking penalty shootout which ended 5-4 in favour of the Lions of Mesopotamia.  The entire game was a story of defensive errors, India’s defence snapped in the crucial moments, while Iraq’s keeper had a moment to forget. At the end of the 90 minutes, the game was level on 2-2.

The most controversial decision arrived when the referee decided to award Iraq with a second penalty.

Sandesh Jhingan allegedly pushed an Iraq player which led to the penalty.

However, the replay suggested that the decision was debatable.

Stimac expressed his disappointment by sharing a message on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter), and wrote, “Our boys left everything on that pitch tonight and I am immensely proud of them! Someone decided to rob them from winning tonight but the time will come sooner than many expect that even referees will not be able to stop my boys winning such games.”

The game eventually went to penalties and Brandon Fernades missed from the spot and the game ended 5-4 in favour of Iraq.

India will look to bounce back in the upcoming Asian Games.
