Pakistan’s top investigating agency has registered a case against jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan for allegedly inciting government officials to mutiny through his social media posts, according to a media report.

A Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) team comprising investigation and technical officers visited the Adiala Jail to question Mr. Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, in connection with a controversial post on his official X account.

“A case has been registered against Mr. Khan by the FIA for inciting government officials to mutiny,” the Dawn newspaper said citing sources.

The FIA personnel returned empty-handed after Mr. Khan, 71, insisted that he would not join the interrogation without the presence of his lawyers.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar in a statement earlier said the FIA would probe into the handling of the PTI founder’s social media accounts, which were being used allegedly to “create chaos and anarchy” in the country, and “undermining the national security”.

Mr. Tarar said it would be ascertained who was the handler of his social media accounts, and whether such posts were being made at his behest or it was done on directives of someone else.

He said a botched attempt had been made to conspire against the sitting chief justice and heads of other institutions. Through these posts, he tried to mobilise the people against two major State institutions.

“His acts were highly condemnable,” Mr. Tarar said.

Mr. Khan, who has been incarcerated at the Adiala Jail since last year, has often criticised the powerful establishment through his longish posts on X.

On Friday, Mr. Khan posted a long note on his X account, which said, “This is not the first time in the history of this country that one individual (referring to Army Chief Gen Asim Munir) has put the entire country at stake to protect his hold on power. (General) Yahya Khan also betrayed the Awami League and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to stay in power.”

He recalled the events from 1971 when 90,000 soldiers were taken as prisoners during Bangladesh’s Liberation War and how former president Zulfikar Ali Bhutto himself admitted to the loss of 50,000 innocent lives.

“Even today, the same story is being repeated. Once again, one person has taken over control and is destroying the system to prolong and strengthen his hold on power,” he said, adding that a small powerful elite dominates all the resources, power, and control of the country.

The Supreme Court is the only institution somewhat safe from their influence, and now it is also being attacked, he said.

Imran Khan is facing charges of allegedly getting married to his third wife during the time of her Iddat.

Islamabad:

A local court in Islamabad on Thursday summoned former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on September 25 in a case related to his alleged ‘un-Islamic’ marriage with Bushra Bibi, Pakistan-based The Express Tribune reported citing Express News.

Civil Judge Qudratullah in an order issued to the Superintendent Attock Jail directed the latter to ensure that Imran Khan is presented before the court, The Express Tribune reported. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has been imprisoned in jail after being convicted in the Toshakhana case.

He was arrested from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore on August 5. During the hearing, the judge will examine the arguments of the PTI chairman’s lawyer challenging the court’s jurisdiction in hearing the said case. The judge asked Imran Khan’s counsel to prepare arguments after he sought time from the court.

Imran Khan is facing charges of allegedly getting married to his third wife during the time of her Iddat, the report said. Iddat is an Islamic terminology that is considered to be a specified time period of waiting for a woman before marrying someone else after getting divorced or after her husband’s death.

Earlier in July, the PTI chairman challenged a trial court’s decision to accept a petition seeking criminal proceedings against him and his wife for cohabiting after their first nikah that allegedly took place during her Iddat period, according to The Express Tribune report.

On July 18, a judicial magistrate in Islamabad, Qudratullah issued a nine-page detailed judgement stating that the petition filed against Imran Khan related to his ‘illegal’ marriage was admissible, The Express Tribune reported. The judge also directed Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to appear in his court.

On July 14, Islamabad Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Azam Khan sent the case to the judicial magistrate. He also dismissed another civil court’s decision declaring the plea challenging the legality of the marriage inadmissible.

In his petition, the former Pakistan PM said that the allegations mentioned in the private complaint do not constitute an offence within the ambit of Section 496 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

It further stated, “Thus continuation of the trial would amount to the abuse of the process of law.”

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s jail detention related to charges of leaking state secrets was extended for another two weeks, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

The jail custody has been extended until September 26, his lawyer Naeem Panjutha said in a post on X messaging platform, formerly Twitter.

Khan has been in prison since early August, having earlier been convicted on corruption charges and sentenced to three years.

A high court last month suspended his sentence, but a prior order for his remand in custody in the state secrets case prevented his release.
