“Rohit (Sharma) and Virat (Kohli) have been around forever and obviously Hardik is an important player for us, we want to manage him. Kuldeep is in great form. It also gives us a chance to look at some of the other guys. That’s the thing. Luckily, we got a fair amount of cricket in the Asia Cup. If not we might have looked at it some other way. At some stage or the other, more than physical, guys sometimes need a mental break which is not such a bad thing, leading up the tournament (Cricket World Cup). But comes the third game, everyone will be available to play. We will play our World Cup squad. It does give us a chance to play some other guys who have been sitting outside and it has been a strong squad,” said Ajit Agarkar.

“He has not picked up a stress fracture, otherwise he would not have been in the squad. In the finals day, he got through his program fine, whether it is batting or fielding. At the moment, he is fit and that is why we have picked him. And we are hopeful that he gets through all these three games. He has worked incredibly hard over the last many months to be at this stage to be fit and fortunately for him it was not a massive injury (the niggle) that he picked up. At the moment he is fine,” said Rohit Sharma on Shreyas Iyer.

When asked if Ravichandran Ashwin will be replacing Axar Patel if the latter is not fit for World Cup, Ajit Agarkar said: “There are couple of guys anyway, both him (Ashwin) and Washington (Sundar). What we know with Axar’s (Patel) injury that he should be okay. All will make it once we know that. But at least it leaves us with options. If these guys get a couple of games now, (it) gives the team management a few options if they need to go that way. If the need arises, we will probably have a look at it at that stage. But I don’t think there is the need to speculate right now or make any decisions right now because we are hoping that Axar is fit.”

“Few of the guys have obviously been given a breather for the first couple of games. Axar has picked an injury unfortunately and we are hopeful that he will be fit. That’s why the two (spinners have been added). Washington Sundar was already part of the squad for finals and Ashwin brings experience. So it just gives us options just in case, there is a need at some stage to look at a couple of guys. Basically those are the two guys that we need to look at if the need arises at some stage. But apart from that I think it’s pretty straightforward,” said Agarkar.

“Axar Patel obviously will be assessed if he is fit or not. We are hoping he is fit for the third ODI. And we have kept both Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar as part of the squad for the third one. So, it is a 17-member squad for the third one,” said BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Ravichandran Ashwin has stayed positive despite being overlooked for the Cricket World Cup 2023. “Even I have had my fair share of failures and successes. But I have tattooed Indian cricket close to my heart. If they require my service even tomorrow, I will be ready and will give my 100 percent,” the spinner had said on his YouTube channel.

“As a spinner-all-rounder, Ashwin is in the line. I have been talking to him on the phone. The injury happened to Axar at the last minute.
