Rohit Sharma on Friday equalled Virat Kohli in the list of an unwanted record. The India captain scored a duck off two balls in the side’s last match of Super 4 in Asia Cup 2023. It was Rohit’s 15th duck in his 249-match ODI career. Interestingly, the number of times Rohit has been dismissed without scoring a run in ODI cricket is exactly same to that of Virat Kohli. While the list of most ducks in an ODI career is topped by Sri Lanka legend Sanath Jayasuriya (34), batting great Sachin Tendulkar with 20 such dismissals is at the helm when it comes to Indian players.

List of Indian players with ODI ducks:

Sachin Tendulkar – 20

Javagal Srinath – 19

Anil Kumble – 18

Yuvraj Singh – 18

Harbhajan Singh – 17

Sourav Ganguly – 16

Zaheer Khan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli -15

Talking about the India vs Bangladesh Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match, Shubman Gill‘s fine-tuned 121 and Axar Patel‘s late surge of 42 went went in vain as Bangladesh defeated India by 6 runs.

Chasing a 266-run target, India were bundled out for 259 in 49.5 overs. Mustafizur Rahman starred with three wickets while Mahedi Hasan and Tanzim Hasan Sakib picked two wickets each for Bangladesh. It was the maiden international match for right-arm pacer Tanzim and he duly impressed with his bowling.

Earlier, Shakib Al Hasan (80) and Tohwid Hridoy (54) slammed half-centuries as Bangladesh posted a total of 265 for 8 in 50 overs.

Shardul Thakur picked three wickets and Mohammed Shami registered two wickets to his name after India captain Rohit won the toss and opted to bowl first.

In the chase, Gill’s sensational century kept India in the hunt but his wicket saw a major turnaround. Axar fought well towards the end but he could not take India home, credit goes to Bangladesh for holding their nerve really well in the tense finish.

India made wholesale changes to their playing XI in their last Super 4 match of Asia Cup 2023 on Friday. They rested Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav for the game with Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami and Prasidh Krishna coming in. India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl against Bangladesh in the game before giving rise to a funny moment. For a moment after the toss, Rohit forgot the changes made in the Indian team.

Watch the video here:

“We are gonna field first. It is something we haven’t done in the tournament, we haven’t done it under lights so it gives us an opportunity to bat under lights. The wicket honestly has got everything for everyone. Pacers who bend their back in the daytime have also got movement and there have been assistance for the spinners. Got to be brave and play your natural game. We got to give game time to some other guys who haven’t played,” said Rohit.

Tilak, who impressed with his performance in recently-started T20I career, was handed ODI debut for their inconsequential Super 4 clash against Bangladesh.

Middle order batter Shreyas Iyer missed India’s third consecutive game with the BCCI saying he “has shown improvement but is not yet fully fit.”

For Bangladesh, Tanzib Shakib was handed ODI debut.

Teams: India: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Prasidh Krishna.

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Litton Das (wk), Tanzid Hasan, Anamul Haque, Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Mustafizur Rahman.

Shubman Gill gave an awesome display of his talent while registering his fifth ODI hundred, but Bangladesh managed to eke out an unexpected six-run win over India in an Asia Cup Super Four match In Colombo on Friday. Gill’s 121 off 133 balls was exceptional. But it was not enough to drag India past Bangladesh’s 265 for 8, built around fifties by Shakib al Hasan (80) and Towhid Hridoy (54) after they were put into bat. India were bowled out for 259. Axar Patel (42 off 34 balls) tried gamely to bring India back into the game with some heavy blows, but the target stayed just beyond India’s grasp.

But in the tournament’s context, the result did not matter as India had already entered the final. They will face Sri Lanka on Sunday. But the night belonged to Gill, despite the end result.

Gill’s batting is all about timing and minimalism. He pulls but not with the flourish of Rohit Sharma, and he drives but not with the flair of Virat Kohli. But Gill lends his own aesthetics and grace to his game. Sample this.

Shakib dropped one a bit short and Gill stepped out just enough to meet the ball in its pitch. It was not the shimmy of a ballet dancer, but the precise footwork of a boxer.

There was no explosive loft over covers that one would normally expect, but Gill ended the moment with a simple check drive that sailed for a six over wide long-off.

Gill did that twice in one over against off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz – once over long-on and the second time straight over the bowler’s head.

The knock was remarkable also because Gill hardly received any support from the other end.

Apart from Gill none of the Indian batsmen looked part on this night, and they started the chase on a disastrous note.

Since Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya were among the five rested players, India needed heftier contributions from captain Rohit Sharma and the rest of the batters.

India also gave a break to pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

But the contributions from other batsmen never really arrived, as the highest partnership in India’s innings was a 57 between Gill and KL Rahul for the third wicket.

India started the chase in a rocky manner as Rohit departed in the first over itself, perishing to Tanzim Hasan after a half-hearted, uppish drive.

Tilak Varma, who made his ODI debut in this match, shouldered arms to Tanzim only to see his stumps getting disturbed.

Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, who played one sweep shot too many, failed to get going against a plethora of Bangladesh spinners. Among the ruins around him, Gill batted with a lot of composure. But his innings was destined to end as a study material to his unique batsmanship, rather than a catalyst to an Indian win. He holed out in the deep off Mahedi Hasan.

Earlier, Shakib and Hridoy exploited the reduced firepower in India’s bowling attack to score half-centuries. Shakib, who added 101 runs for the fifth wicket with Hridoy, made a confidence-boosting fifty for himself after struggling to make an impact recently with the bat.

The left-hander was severe on Axar, hammering the left-arm spinner for two consecutive sixes, but he found the desired only from the young Hridoy. The Shakib-Hridoy partnership also rescued Bangladesh from total disaster which they appeared to have headed at 59 for 4 in the 14th over.

But they could not expand their knocks as Shakib was cleaned up by Shardul Thakur, while Mohammed Shami accounted for Hridoy. However, Nasum Ahmed (44 off 45 balls) pushed Bangladesh past the 250-run mark as Indian bowlers lost some direction towards the business end.

India could have brought curtains on Bangladesh innings much quicker had they held on to three catches – Suryakumar, Tilak and KL Rahul being the offenders.

That laxity on the field and by the bowlers helped Bangladesh to post a competitive total that proved just enough.

IND vs BAN Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 Live Score: With a place in the Asia Cup final already in the bag, India now take on Bangladesh in a dead rubber in Colombo on Friday. The Rohit Sharma-led outfit will think deep whether to give as much game time as possible to its first-choice team or give an opportunity to some of the fringe players ahead of the World Cup at home next month. The question of workload management is pertinent particularly in the case of bowlers. Bangladesh too are likely to rest their key players, ahead of the New Zealand series later this month. India’s Predicted XI vs Bangladesh: Rohit Sharma To Make 3-4 Changes For Asia Cup Match? https://artifexnews.net/indias-predicted-xi-vs-bangladesh-rohit-sharma-to-make-3-4-changes-for-asia-cup-match-4391576/ Fri, 15 Sep 2023 04:38:31 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/indias-predicted-xi-vs-bangladesh-rohit-sharma-to-make-3-4-changes-for-asia-cup-match-4391576/ Read More “India’s Predicted XI vs Bangladesh: Rohit Sharma To Make 3-4 Changes For Asia Cup Match?” »

With a spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final sealed, the Indian cricket team take on Bangladesh in an inconsequential match, their last in the Super 4 stage of the tournament. The two finalists have been decided, with Sri Lanka beating Pakistan in a thriller to book their progression. Bangladesh’s fate, on the other hand, has already been sealed, and they are no longer in the race to qualify for the final. The match, hence, offers the Indian team the perfect opportunity to test its bench strength.

In a similar inconsequential match against Afghanistan in the 2018 Asia Cup, Rohit Sharma decided to rest a lot of players including himself. The match saw MS Dhoni playing his last game for India as a skipper. Could a similar decision be on the cards this time too?

With Shreyas Iyer rejoining the Indian team in the nets on the eve of the Bangladesh clash, he is expected to break into the playing XI. The likes of Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna, etc. could also be handed chances to showcase their credentials.

The Indian team management does have an eye on the ODI World Cup. The Bangladesh clash offers the team a fine opportunity to look at some of the future stars and those who are making returns from injuries.

Hardik Pandya, being an all-rounder, could be one of the first names to be rested considering his workload. With Tilak Varma also looking to sharpen his bowling skills, he could be tested to fill the void left by Hardik. However, if Hardik is benched, Shardul could be included in the team in order to give the team enough seam bowling options.

Probable XI:Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(wk), Tilak Varma/Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel/Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj/Prasidh Krishna
