Ravichandran Ashwin drew first blood, Ravindra Jadeja ripped the heart out while Jasprit Bumrah put the final nail in Bangladesh’s coffin as India routed the visitors by seven wickets in the second Test to complete a record-extending 18th series win at home in Kanpur on Tuesday. It was one of the most exhilarating performance by the Indian team despite losing more than 200 overs of play with two days of complete wash-out. The outright victory consolidated India’s pole position in the ICC World Test Championship Table (WTC) with 74.24 percentage points.

Bangladesh needed a resolute fightback on the final day to salvage a draw but they collapsed to 146 after resuming the day 26 for two. Bumrah (3/17 in 10 overs), Ravichandran Ashwin (3/50 in 15 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/34 in 10 overs) shared bulk of the spoils.

India scored the required 95 runs in 17.2 overs with ‘Player Of The Match’ Yashasvi Jaiswal (51) scoring his second fifty of the match.

For Bangladesh, opener Shadman Islam (50) and former skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (37) were the only batters who offered some resistance while others succumbed to relentless pressure from the home bowlers after a top notch batting performance to make a match of it.

The biggest disappointment was Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto’s reckless reverse sweep off Jadeja that opened the floodgates.

After Ashwin removed first innings centurion Mominul Haque in the firsts few minutes, Jadeja broke the back of Bangladeshi middle-order with his sizzling performance, while Bumrah also contributed to the win with his incisive bowling that resulted in three wickets.

India, who had a 52-run first innings lead, knocked off the required 95 runs in 17.2 overs after losing Rohit Sharma (8) and Shubhman Gill (6) to off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz .

Jaiswal and Virat Kohli (29 not out) shared a 58-run stand for the third wicket.

Like the first inninngs, Rohit and Jaiswal went after the Bangladeshi bowlers even as the home skipper departed early when his sweep off Miraz landed straight into the hands of Hasan Mahmud.

Shubman Gill was also trapped by Miraz.

Kohli worked the ball around to go steady, while Jaiswal also batted with maturity to complete his second successive half-century. With just three runs required to complete the win, Jaiswal went after Taijul Islam and ended up giving a catch to Shakib at extra cover.

Rishabh Pant (4) finished the game in style with a boundary off Taijul.

India have not lost a match to Bangladesh in Test cricket and the fact that they won this contest in a mere six sessions after losing two full days to rain, speaks volumes of the gulf between the two teams.

Beginning the decisive day at 26 for two, Bangladesh lost overnight batter and first innings centurion Mominul to Ashwin quickly but Shadman (50 off 101) kept one end tight with his fighting knock that had 10 boundaries.

Shadman raised a 55-run stand with his skipper for the fourth wicket but Shanto (19 off 37) undid the good work with his poor shot selection.

He tried to reverse sweep Jadeja, and missed the line to be bowled. Pacer Akash had Shadman caught in the gully by Jaiswal.

Once Shadman was dismissed, Bangladesh batting fell apart with Jadeja proving to be too hot to handle for the visitors. The left-arm spinner got rid of Shanto, Litton Das (1) and Shakib Al Hasan (0) in a spell that broke the back of Bangladesh middle-order.

Shakib could not even open his account in probably the last innings of his Test career. His half-hearted defensive shot went straight back to Jadeja while Das nicked one behind the wicket.

Bumrah then got rid of Miraz (9) and Taijul Islam (0) to further pile on the Bangladesh misery. He closed the Bangladesh innings by cleaning up Rahim (37).

Shadman negotiated the Indian bowlers with confidence. He swept Ashwin and drove Bumrah with authority but Mominul did not last long.

He swept Ashwin but the ball bounced a tad more with KL Rahul, taking a catch at leg-slip.

Aswhin’s third wicket brought rival skipper Shanto to the crease. Shanto took some time to settle, remaining circumspect for a while.

Shadman though batted solid from his end. His defence was compact against Ashwin and he was not afraid to use his feet against the off-spinner. He rotated the strike and kept finding boundaries to keep the score ticking.

Rohit brought Mohammed Siraj into the attack and he almost had Shanto but the edge from the Bangladesh skipper flew to the boundary through the vacant space between the second and gully.

Shadman handled the Siraj challenge well. He slapped a widish one from him to the fence and also drove through the covers when the pacer pitched full while bowling from around the wicket. He completed his fifty but departed soon after.

No play was possible for the second consecutive day in the second Test between India and Bangladesh due to a wet outfield at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. Overnight rain had caused a delay to the start of action but even as the sun was shining bright around 2:00pm and there were no soggy patches on the ground, the officials decided to call off the play. Almost eight sessions have been lost in the game due to persistent rain that has played havoc with the final match of the two-game series. Questions on the drainage system used at the venue have been duly raised.

Bangladesh had ended the rain-shortened opening day at 107 for 3.

The entire second day was washed out without a ball being bowled, and only 35 overs were bowled on the opening day.

India pacer Akash Deep (2/34) and Ravichandran Ashwin (1/22) were among the wickets.

On Friday also, the start of the match was delayed by an hour due to a wet outfield.

India are leading the two-match series 1-0, having won the Chennai Test by 280 runs.

Bangladeshi cricket fan Rabi-ul-Islam, also popularly called Tiger Robi, has been “deported” to his country, sources said on Saturday, a day after he stoked a controversy by claiming he was assaulted inside the stadium in Kanpur during the India-Bangladesh test match and later retracting his allegation. However, Additional DCP (Local Intelligence Unit) Rajesh Kumar Srivastava said Robi, who was suffering from metastatic cancer, had come to India on a medical visa and authorities had facilitated his travel back home as per his wish.

Robi was taken to Chakeri airport escorted by police personnel and they remained there till his flight took off for Delhi on Saturday. The Bangladeshi national took a flight for Dhaka from Delhi airport in the afternoon and he was not allowed to go outside the airport premises, the official said.

ADCP Srivastava told PTI that Robi had come to India on September 18 after getting a visa on medical grounds to undergo treatment at a hospital in Howrah but instead visited Chennai to support the Bangladesh team who played their first test and later left for Kanpur.

Robi reached Green Park stadium on Friday morning and walked to the C-Balcony enclosure and was seen waving flags during the match which may have resulted in exhaustion and he was taken ill, police officials said.

“He was found gasping for breath when he met a constable. He became unconscious before we could speak to him,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Harish Chander told PTI.

He was taken to Regency Hospital from where he was discharged on Friday late evening, the ACP added.

Earlier, during a brief interaction with the media on Friday, Robi indicated that he had been punched in his abdomen during an altercation. However, in a statement issued from his hospital bed later, he said he merely felt unwell and was given the requisite assistance by the local police.

“I fell ill and the police brought me to the hospital. Now I am feeling much better,” he stated in a short video clip.

According to officials, Robi had reached Kanpur on Thursday night and he had to sleep on the street along with labourers.

He stayed at a hotel in Kanpur on Friday night and was taken to Chakeri airport on Saturday morning, they said.

Abhishek Pandey, ACP (Kalyanpur), said Robi received immediate medical care and insisted that he had not been assaulted as alleged in early reports.

Sources said it is not clear how he travelled for the matches despite having a medical visa and has been deported.

As play on Day 2 of the second Test between India and Bangladesh was washed out without a ball being bowled at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, hundreds of spectators who came to watch the match were disappointed and left feeling gutted. With rain and a wet outfield ensuring no play was possible, it was a difficult time waiting for the spectators as Kanpur was hosting a match after a long time. Continuous drizzle throughout the morning transitioned into light rain by noon, but with no improvement in the outfield conditions, there was no chance for play to resume. With three days remaining, India remains confident of pushing for a result, provided the rain abates.

“We came here from Gorakhpur to watch five days of a Test match but were left feeling gutted after today’s washed out. After seven years, Kanpur is hosting a match and we lacked basic facilities. We have Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow which provides top-class facilities there. If this match was being played there, we could have watched a great game of cricket,” a fan told IANS outside the Green Park Stadium.

Despite an up-and-down performance from their star players in the first Test, India showcased their depth in both batting and bowling. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli combined for only 34 runs across four innings, but the team still posted competitive totals thanks to centuries from Ravichandran Ashwin, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant.

Another fan from Lucknow said, “Maja nahin aya match dekhne ko milta to jayda behtar hota. We came from Lucknow and stayed here hoping to watch five days of action, but yesterday also only 35 overs were bowled and today there was not even a single ball was bowled. So obviously we feel bad but rain is in no one’s hand. We came here to watch Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bat, but we have only watched them fielding.”

On Virat Kohli’s dip in form, he said, “See, there shouldn’t be any concern about Kohli’s form, he is a big player, and will score runs soon. We all saw what he did in the T20 World Cup.”

A local fan from Kanpur, Civil Lines area said, “Obviously as a fan, we feel sad not to watch the game on Day 2. Kanpur hosted the match after a long time, star players were here and not able to watch the, I feel gutted. Virat’s form has been a concern, but he is a big player, and his bat will talk soon.

On the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, he said, “Nathan Lyon always talks big. Last time Rishabh Pant smashed him all around the ground. Pant will score runs this time too…. Gabba ka ghamand dubara tootega.”

As they trooped out of the stadium, the fans were hoping the weather god would relent and play would be possible for the next three days. Bangladesh will resume batting from Day 3 at 107/3 with Mominul unbeaten on 40 and Mushfiqur batting at six.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the India-Bangladesh second Test match to be played at the International Green Park stadium in Kanpur scheduled from September 27, a senior official said on Tuesday. An FIR was filed against 20 members of the Akhilesh Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha on Monday for allegedly organising a ‘havan’ by obstructing the road before the stadium to protest against atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh, said ACP Harish Chander. Police said a “fool-proof” security plan has been chalked out for India and Bangladesh cricket teams which are supposed to arrive here by Tuesday evening.

Kanpur’s Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Harish Chander told PTI they have sought adequate police force, including senior rank officials, to be deployed for the match.

“We are reviewing the security arrangements to leave no stone unturned and (are) confident of getting an adequate police force to meet the requirements,” he added.

The officer said they were coordinating with the central and state agencies, including the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the state Intelligence to share inputs regarding threats, if any, to deal with it deftly.

The Green Park stadium and Hotel Landmark have been divided into sectors, zones and sub-zones, and its reign has been given to DCP, additional DCP and ACP rank officials, respectively, said DCP (East) Shrawan Kumar Singh, who has been made the nodal officer of the entire event.

Traffic diversions have also been imposed ahead of the match.

Those named in the FIR included Rakesh Mishra, Vikas, Atul, Jaydeep, Vikas Gupta, Prashant Dheer, Ajay Rathore, Ashish, Brajesh and about 10 others unidentified.

The FIR has been lodged under BNS sections of 189(2) (unlawful assembly), 191 (2) (rioting), 223 (disobeying an order promulgated by a public servant), and 285 (obstruction or injury to any person in any public way), he said.
