Rain threat looms large once again at Pallekele International Stadium© AFP

India’s first match in the Asia Cup 2023 against Pakistan was abandoned due to run after the Rohit Sharma-led side posted a total of 266. A similar situation can arise during their second game against Nepal as rain continues to hamper play at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium in Kandy. With weather reports predicting sporadic rainfall, more delays are expected in the match and there is a chance that the game can be ultimately called off. But, what happens in the case of a complete washout due to rain? Who will progress to the Super 4 in such a scenario?

For an ODI match to determine a result, a minimum 20-over-per-side contest has to be implemented. In the India vs Pakistan match, Rohit Sharma‘s men played 48.5 overs but Pakistan’s batters didn’t get to face a single ball. Hence, the match was abandoned, with both teams sharing a point each.

If a similar situation unfolds in the India vs Nepal clash, the two teams will share points again. Such a case would take India’s points tally to 2 points while Nepal would sit on 1. Hence, India will join Group A leaders Pakistan in the Super 4 stage of the tournament.

Nepal Need To Beat India To Go Through

For Nepal to go through to the next round, beating India is crucial. Hence, Nepal fans would be hoping for a rain-free evening in Kandy.

“Every generation (of Nepal Cricket) had a dream that one day they will play with big nations…Today their dream is coming true,” the coach of the Nepal cricket team had told ANI on the eve of the match.

“We have played the League 2 matches and Asia Cup qualifiers matches. We have won them. We will back our strengths against India,” he added.

Though getting a result in their favour might be difficult for Nepal, the fact that their players will contest against icons like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Shami, would give them plenty of exposure for the future.

After India’s opener against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 was abandoned due to persistent rain in the second half of the match, a similar threat looms large on the Nepal clash too. Dark clouds are hovering over the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy, another stop-start game could be on the cards as India take on Nepal on Monday. But, what happens in the case of a complete washout due to rain? Who will progress to the Super 4 in such a scenario?

India’s opening Asia Cup 2023 match against Pakistan was washed, but not before Rohit Sharma‘s batting unit had posted 266 runs on the board. Though a similar threat looms large on the Indian team against Nepal too, the skipper and the team management would be keen to test out the bowling unit, especially before the crucial Super 4 matches begin. However, India would be without the services of Jasprit Bumrah, who has flown back home over a personal matter. But, who replaces him in the Indian team for the Nepal clash on Monday?

As captain Rohit announced India’s playing XI against Pakistan, there was no place for Mohammed Shami in the team, with Shardul Thakur being preferred as the third pacer. Whether Shami wasn’t fully fit or not, wasn’t revealed but he is expected to return to the Indian team, especially now that Bumrah isn’t available for selection.

Barring the straight swap between Bumrah and Shami, the Indian team isn’t expected to make any change. Had the Indian bowling unit managed to get some action against Pakistan, Prasidh Krishna could’ve been tried in the match against Nepal. But, with rain playing spoilsport in the last match, no other changes are expected to be made.

The top-order trio of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli failed to fire against Pakistan. It is crucial for the Indian team to get them back in form. The Nepal clash, hence, could serve as an important platform for the three right-handers to gain some form and add crucial runs to their roster before the ODI World Cup begins next month.

India’s likely playing XI against Nepal:Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj
