Skipper Rohit Sharma on Sunday (October 20, 2024) asserted that “those three hours” when they collapsed to an unimaginable 46 runs in the first Test against New Zealand, won’t define what this Indian team is and any judgement of his players based on that performance will be unfair.

New Zealand defeated India by eight wickets in the opening Test of the three-match series despite a valiant fight by the hosts in the second innings in which they scored 462 runs. Rohit said one bad show won’t decide his outfit’s ability to play quality cricket and mount a comeback from difficult situation.

“I am not going to look too much into this Test match honestly because those three hours are not going to dictate what this team is. You know, because it will be unfair to think about those three hours and start judging players and talk slightly differently,” said Rohit in the post-match press meet.

“It’s important to keep a consistent message in the group. We really found a way to come back into this game with the bat in the second innings. Of course, we lost a Test match. But I feel a lot of good things have happened in this game.” The captain conceded that India committed some ‘small mistakes’ but underlined the importance of not “panicking” ahead of the next match.

“We have made small mistakes in this game and we are suffering the consequences. But that doesn’t mean that everything is over,” “We have lost such matches before and we have made a comeback after that. So, we will try not to think too much about this Test.” Rohit said the focus will be on staying strong as a unit ahead of the second Test, starting in Pune from October 24.

“Now, it’s just about keeping a very calm atmosphere, and not to send panic messages. It’s important that we stay strong and try and see how we can nail that second game.” Rohit was delighted to see Sarfaraz Khan stepping up after getting drafted in as a replacement for Shubman Gill, who missed the first Test due to a stiff neck.

“It felt like we were ahead in the game at one stage. We didn’t feel like we were 350 behind and that is something that I am really proud of. It’s always nice to have these kind of players waiting to play the game.

“It was unfortunate that Shubman missed this game. Sarfaraz took that opportunity, and got a big 100. It’s a good sign for the team,” he added.

The Mumbaikar said Gill is feeling fine at the moment, indicating that a call on his availability for the second Test will be taken at a later stage.

Rohit said Rishabh Pant, who made a rollicking 99 in the second innings, will have to be treated carefully as the wicketkeeper batter is still charting his way to the top of his game.

Pant had copped a blow on his operated knee and did not keep on the entire third day.

“He had a massive operation on his leg. It’s just to be a little careful about where he is at and what he is to us. Even when he was batting, he was not comfortably running. He was trying to only put the ball in the stands.

“So, we just need to be extra careful because he has had a lot of minor surgeries, and one big surgery on his knee. He also went through trauma in the last one and a half years.

“So, when you are keeping, you have to bend your knee. The wicket being what it was, we thought it is the right thing to do for him to stay inside and then get 100% ready for the next one,” he explained.

Jasprit Bumrah had a fine Test match, taking three wickets and not leaking too many runs. But his pace colleague Mohammed Siraj was a bit of disappointment.

Siraj took two wickets in the first innings but he failed to make the desired impact as the second pacer.

Rohit refused to single out any bowler for being underwhelming.

“Bumrah got a couple of wickets so I want him to bowl an extended spell (in the second innings). We tried really hard with the new ball, Siraj bowled a brilliant spell as well, but didn’t get the result.

India’s percentage dropped to 68.06% after the humbling experience in Bengaluru, and they will now look to get their act together before the upcoming two Tests and the ensuing five-match series in Australia at the end of the year.

The Black Caps chased down their victory target of 107 with relative ease, with the win catapulting the side from sixth up to fourth on the updated standings with a win-loss percentage of 44.44%.

Reigning champions Australia and Sri Lanka are currently India’s closest challengers on the standings, with Pat Cummins’ side in second place on 62.50% and the island nation narrowly behind with 55.56% following their recent series sweep over New Zealand.

But New Zealand’s triumph over India has the Kiwis back in the running for a second appearance in the World Test Championship final, as they overtake England and South Africa to re-claim fourth position.

New Zealand host England for three Tests in November and December and may still be in contention for a top two finish on the standings with a pair of positive results from the remaining matches against India.

After bowling India out for a historic low of 46 on the first morning of the match, New Zealand piled up a massive 402 thanks largely to a Rachin Ravindra century (134) and a Tim Southee cameo (65) lower down the order.

India responded strongly in their second essay with Sarfaraz Khan (150) and Rishabh Pant (99) masterminding an excellent comeback, before the second new ball turned the match in New Zealand’s favour.

Batting maestro Virat Kohli became the fourth Indian to cross 9000 runs in Test cricket, scaling another peak in a glorious career during the third day of the opening match against New Zealand in Bengaluru on Friday (October 18, 2024).

Kohli joined an august company featuring Sachin Tendulkar (15921), Rahul Dravid (13265) and Sunil Gavaskar (10122).

However, he is the slowest among them to reach this landmark, having taken 197 innings.

The 35-year-old Kohli reached the mark after crossing his half-century in India’s second-innings.

Batting at No. 3, Kohli fell for a nine-ball duck in the first innings as India were all out for 46.

In the recent Test series against Bangladesh, Kohli became the quickest batter to complete 27,000 international runs in only 594 innings.

Heavy showers forced both teams to call off their training sessions on Tuesday. Play is likely to be interrupted in the first two days of the Test, at a minimum.

New Zealand will be wary regardless, as India recently showed that even a heavily truncated encounter cannot stop its march to victory.

Bangladesh learnt the hard way, going down in two days in the second Test at Kanpur earlier this month.

Poor record

The Kiwis must overcome a particularly poor record in India. The last Test win on these shores came all the way back in 1988 at Bombay, inspired by stellar shows from John Bracewell and Richard Hadlee. The 19 Tests that have followed have resulted in ten losses and nine draws. To make the task harder, key batter Kane Williamson is out for the first match due to a groin strain. Fast bowler Ben Sears, known to hurry batters with extra zip off the pitch, is also out injured. His replacement, uncapped Otago Volts bowler Jacob Duffy, will not be able to reach the city in time for start of play.

The visitor is expected to rely heavily on spinners Mitchell Santner, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips and Ajaz Patel to carry the bulk of the load.

A 0-2 loss to Sri Lanka last month cannot help confidence.

Sitting pretty

India, meanwhile, is sitting pretty on a six-match winning streak. A 3-0 sweep in this series, which will guarantee a spot in the World Test Championship final, serves as timely motivation.

If India can manage to secure early passage to the summit clash, it will considerably reduce the pressure when the side tours to Australia later this year for five Tests.

The rain and damp pitch could prompt India to feature three pacers in Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep. The trio is more than capable of turning it on in the absence of an injured Mohammed Shami.

Focus on Ashwin, Jadeja

Spinners R. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who took 11 and nine wickets respectively in the Bangladesh series, will once again prove to be a handful.

On the batting front, Virat Kohli will welcome the chance to feature in his second home. Kohli will hold fond memories of scoring 103 and 51 n.o. against the same opposition at this venue in 2012, to hand India a hard-fought win.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who found form in the Bangladesh games, is capable of deflating the opposition in a single session. The young opener received high praise from his captain Rohit Sharma. “The guy has got real talent. He has got the game to play in all conditions. From what he has shown us in this brief period of time, you can bet on him and expect him to do wonders for the team. We have found a great player,” Rohit said.

By all accounts, India’s proud home record – the last series defeat came at the hands of England in 2012 – is set to continue.
