India fired on all cylinders in what was supposed to be war minus the shooting, blowing away arch-rivals Pakistan by seven wickets in a World Cup face-off that ended in a damp squib after causing unbridled hysteria and logistical hassles. In what is seen as the pinnacle of cricket by fans in the subcontinent, Indian captain Rohit Sharma emerged as the undisputed star of the match, scoring a 63-ball 86 to power his team to the modest target of 192 with as many as 19.3 overs to spare.

Jasprit Bumrah was a tiger on the prowl and Mohammed Siraj displayed wolf-like aggression before skipper Rohit completed the annihilation as India produced a near-perfect performance in one of the most lopsided World Cup games between the arch-rivals.

Rohit just casually flaunted his repertoire of strokes, which included a pull shot behind square of Shaheen Shah Afridi and a square driven six off Haris Rauf, as India were home by 8.05 pm local time.

The win was India’s eighth in the 50 over global event, where Pakistan had never been able to match their neighbours in terms of skill, strategy or execution since 1992.

Just like he brushes his teeth, drinks water, pulling and hooking is a part of Rohit’s daily chores. The 1150 gram willow is an extension of his arm and those strong but supple wrists does its job at his beck and call. On the day, it responded to his call 12 times – six of which went over the ropes.

People love to err on side of caution but Rohit is ready to err on side of risk – whether its spin of coin or dismissing a fast bouncer from his presence.

There will be days when he might fail and look silly but on days he succeeds, he would look regal, like he did on Saturday.

Bowlers’ day out

It is very difficult to better perfection but if anything was synonymous with perfection, then decimating Pakistan for 192 in 42.5 overs would come closest.

Five bowlers, showing different facets of bowling and sharing equal spoils is rarity but there couldn’t have been a more opportune setting to tick all boxes like Rohit’s men did on the day.

Bumrah (2/19 in 7 overs), Siraj (2/50 in 8 overs), Kuldeep (2/35 in 10 overs), Hardik Pandya (2/34 in 6 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/35 in 9.5 overs) were relentless in their pursuit of choking the opposition into submission.

This Pakistan team never had the depth to compete with India and that one T20 World Cup game which India lost in Dubai back in 2021 was just an aberration.

For the 1 lakh plus spectators at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the garba started one day in advance and the story of this absolute dominance by India will be remembered for times to come.

For the rest of the country, Bengal can celebrate an early Durga Puja and in the northern part of India, it could an early Diwali.

Motera was the Indian cricket fan’s the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ on Saturday. One could be swayed by such atmosphere but just like Rohit, his team has also learnt the art of staying in its bubble.

It was imposing and in-your-face and at times intimidating. The vibe was felt when the entire stadium sang the national anthem.

Siraj and Bumrah basically hoodwinked the Pakistan batters with the semi-old ball and a bagful of tricks for which they had no answer.

This was Pakistan’s second lowest score against India in ODI World Cup after the 180 all-out in 1999.

The two new ball bowlers made the semi-new ball talk by altering the length and using the wobbly seam to run through a circumspect middle-order and put India on course of their eighth victory in ODI World Cups.

Kuldeep’s role as the supporting protagonist was also laudable as he operated like a sly fox, removing Saud Shakeel (6) and Iftikhar Ahmed (4) in quick succession to hasten the slide.

Rohit’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss might have raised a few eye-brows but the Indian team always had things under control despite a 82-run third wicket stand between skipper Babar Azam (50 off 58 balls) and Mohammed Rizwan (49 off 69 balls).

It was a matter of one wicket and once Siraj got one to just move in a shade from a shorter length, the Pakistan skipper misjudged it completely and remained rooted to his crease trying to steer it to third man.

The sound of timber was what the entire Motera wanted to hear.

Rizwan, on cusp of his half-century got a wobbly seam slow off-cutter from Bumrah (2/19 in 7 overs), which entered through the gap between bat and pad as Pakistan’s resistance ended at that moment.

Babar and Rizwan had a partnership going but if one looks at how the ODI landscape has changed, they were well behind par during the stand.

With two new Kookaburras used from both sides, the balls don’t generally get old but the two Indian pacers, on a flat track, altered the length suitably to make the inroads at the right junctures.

In case of Kuldeep, he knew Saud and Iftikhar aren’t good at sweeping and it brought about their downfall. It only helped that Jadeja was parsimonious at the other end.

When the Indian innings commenced, it wasn’t a question of how but when will they wrap up things. Rohit ensured it happened in a jiffy.

Arch-rivals India and Pakistan will be up against each other in the ODI World Cup 2023 on Saturday. The high-profile game will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both the teams are undefeated in the ongoing tournament so far registering two wins in apiece. Talking about the Rohit Sharma led team, it defeated Australia by six wickets in its campaign opener and then routed Afghanistan by an eight-wicket margin in a one sided game. Their net run rate (NRR) is +1.500. (Scorecard | Points Table)

On the other hand, Babar Azam-led Pakistan defeated Netherlands by 81 runs in their opening game before handing a six-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in a high-scoring encounter in Hyderabad. The match also saw Pakistan registering the highest-ever successful ODI chase in World Cup history. Their NRR is +0.927.

While both India and Pakistan will be carrying good form, there are also some areas of concern for them going into the game. Here are the major issues that might trouble India –

The Selection Dilemma

Whether to give benched player Suryakumar Yadav a chance in the crucial match against Pakistan or not must be in the mind of the selection panel. The dilemma arises not only because of the abilities that Suryakumar possesses but also because Shreyas Iyer has failed to impress so far.

Another selection dilemma would be revolving around the possible inclusion of Mohammad Shami. The star pacer is yet to feature in any game this World Cup, but his familiarity with the Narendra Modi Stadium might benefit India more than any other player. The venue is Shami’s home ground in Indian Premier League where he plays for Gujarat Titans.

Rohit Sharma vs Shaheen Afridi

Though Rohit will be entering the Pakistan game on the back of a sensational 131-run knock, his struggle against left-arm pacers at the start of an inning is known to all. Considering the weightage Rohit’s wicket holds, India would want the star batter to continue his good form.

The Toss Factor

The toss could play a crucial role in the India vs Pakistan game. Chasing is comparatively easier at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which usually offers belter tracks. Under lights, the dew factor comes into play which gives an upper hand to the chasing side. If India bowl second, they definitely need to post a big total on the board to give a tough fight to Pakistan.

Bitter-rivals India and Pakistan meet in a blockbuster clash at the World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Both teams have had perfect starts to the tournament with two wins in their first two outings. India and Pakistan had met during the Asia Cup last month with Rohit Sharma and his men registering a 228-run win over the Babar Azam-led side. Here are four key battles that could decide the eagerly-awaited contest at the world’s biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.

Rohit Sharma vs Shaheen Afridi

India skipper Rohit Sharma has struggled against Shaheen Shah Afridi’s left-arm pace in the few outings the two teams have had in recent times.

Shaheen rattled Rohit’s off stump in their first Asia Cup match in Pallekele last month when the opener’s lack of footwork saw him bowled for 11.

The duel began at the T20 World Cup in 2021 when Shaheen trapped Rohit lbw for a duck in the first over in Dubai with his pace and swing.

But Rohit came back prepared when the rivals next met in Colombo and remained cautious against the quick despite hitting a six off his first over.

Virat Kohli vs Haris Rauf

The stakes were high when Virat Kohli came up against Haris Rauf in a challenging chase at the T20 World Cup in Melbourne last year.

India needed 31 off the last 18 balls while chasing 160 when Kohli held his nerve to smash Rauf for two sixes to bring the house down at a packed MCG.

The first was a length ball which Kohli dispatched straight down the ground and he flicked the next to over fine-leg en route to victory.

Kohli later said the sixes were “instinctive”, but it began a great battle with the Pakistan quick which awaits another showdown in Ahmedabad.

Jasprit Bumrah vs Babar Azam

Jasprit Bumrah experienced the Pakistan captain’s ability at the 2021 T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Azam took on the Indian attack including Bumrah, a yorker king, with ease as he and Mohammad Rizwan steered the team to a 10-wicket victory in Dubai.

But two years later Bumrah and company seemed to have learnt their lessons when they bowled out Pakistan for 128 in a crushing 228-run win in an Asia Cup Super Four clash.

Bumrah beat the bat of Azam on a few occasions in Colombo before Hardik Pandya got the prized wicket.

Iftikhar Ahmed vs Kuldeep Yadav

Iftikhar Ahmed is a middle-order batsman who can play anchor or go after the bowling with equal ease but at the Asia Cup last month, India spinner Kuldeep Yadav cut short the batsman’s knock, taking a smart catch off his own bowling.

Kuldeep, a left-arm wrist spinner, claimed 5-25 in that game as India claimed a 228-run win.

Iftikhar’s task on Saturday will be to tackle the spinners in the middle overs and also accelerate the scoring.

Ahead of India’s blockbuster clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday, fans have threatened to boycott the match on social media due to Pakistan’s involvement in terrorism, once again sparking a ‘Boycott’ trend and debate that if sports and politics/international relations can be kept separate. Earlier on September 13, an Indian Army Colonel commanding a Rashtriya Rifles Unit along with a Major and a Deputy Superintendent of Police were killed in a gunfight with terrorists in the Kokernag area of Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The pictures, and videos of Pakistani players receiving a warm welcome for their matches in the World Cup in India have gone viral after this encounter, with many questioning why Pakistani players are being treated this way when the instances of terrorism continue from Pakistan’s side, causing loss of life and property in India, especially of soldiers, security and police forces.

The announcement of a pre-match show in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, featuring Bollywood singers Arijit Singh, Shankar Mahadevan, and Sukhwinder Singh by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also made plenty of fans furious. It is notable that no opening ceremony was held for the ICC Cricket World Cup, being hosted in India for the first time ever.

Also, India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2013 and India last travelled to Pakistan for the 2008 Asia Cup. Since 2013, India has only played Pakistan in ICC tournaments like the T20 World Cup, ICC Cricket World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy, and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) tournament, Asia Cup.

The viral media of Pakistan players receiving a warm welcome and announcement of the pre-match show in Ahmedabad ahead of the IND-PAK clash led to many social media users voicing out their displeasure, threatening to boycott the show and the match itself.

“What BCCI and Jay Shah have done in the honor of the Pakistan team will not be tolerated at all. Our soldiers are fighting bravely against Pakistan-supported terrorists on the border. #BoycottIndoPakMatch #BoycottIndoPakMatch,” said a user.

“Cricket match is nothing infront of our Soldiers. Enemies are always enemy. Pakistani doesn’t deserve this type of welcome. #BoycottIndoPakMatch #INDvsPAK #IndiaVsPakistan #AUSvsSA #INDvPAK #INDvsAFG #INDvAFG #RohitSharma #TrainAccident #ViratKohli #BoycottIndoPakMatch,” said another user.

“Shame on you @arijitsingh @Shankar_Live and @Sukhwindermusic that you will be singing for the Pakistani for the money #BoycottIndoPakMatch #BoycottBCCI,” said another user.

Coming to the match, India began their World Cup campaign with comprehensive wins over Australia and Afghanistan, while Pakistan also emerged victorious in their first two matches against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

Fans are counting on the likes of Virat Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj to come up with the goods again as the hosts go to battle against their bitter rivals.

India squad:Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav.

Harsha Bhogle, who is known as the ‘Voice of Cricket’, informed on Thursday that he is down with a bout of dengue fever. Bhogle revealed that he won’t be in the commentary box for the World Cup 2023 clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Bhogle took to his official handle on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the development. The 62-year-old also thanked his co-commentators and the broadcast team for taking the extra workload after he withdrew the second innings of the India vs Australia match in Chennai, citing health concerns.

On his return to the commentators’ box, Bhogle added that he hopes to return to commentary duty for India’s match against Bangladesh on October 19 in Pune.

“I am disappointed at having to miss out on #IndiavsPak on the 14th. But I have dengue and the resultant weakness, and lowered immunity, will make it impossible. I am hoping to be back in time for the game on the 19th. My colleagues, and the broadcast crew, have been very helpful (and took on the extra workload during the second half of #IndiaVsAus) and I look forward to saying thank you to them in person,” Bhogle posted on X.

India, on Wednesday, made mincemeat of the Afganistan bowlers on course to a dominant 8-wicket win.

The win, coupled with its victory over 5-time champions Australia in their campaign opener, would put the hosts in a good space ahead of the weekend clash with Pakistan.

The Pakistan cricket team is already in India, gearing up for the Cricket World Cup 2023. The mega event will kick off on October 5 with the final match set to be played on November 19. The Babar Azam-led side will be starting its Cricket World Cup campaign with a match against the Netherlands on October 6. Meanwhile, its much-awaited game against arch-rivals India will take place on October 14. Ahead of the crucial match against the number one ranked ODI team, Pakistan great Moin Khan has said that the players get scared while playing against India.

“I saw this 100%. The players looked scared, they were hesitant in even giving suggestions to Babar, whether it was Rizwan, Shadab or Shaheen. It was visible that the team wasn’t gelled up. There were no discussions, and even if there were suggestions those were not being followed. And even if Babar was following them, they weren’t working,” Moin told Cricket Pakistan while analysing the performance of Babar and the company at the Asia Cup 2023.

“Another thing is that against India players get scared. And those who really are scared that their suggestions won’t work… that’s fear. As a cricketer, you have to play on your potential and you should contribute 100%. It’s okay if your suggestions go wrong, it happens. But your body language shows whether you want to win, and that wasn’t visible. And I’m pretty sure there were some issues in the dressing room. And I know, in a professional environment, there are differences but you have to end them to perform better. You have to move on,” Moin added.

Kane Williamson showed his class in his first competitive outing in six months while Rachin Ravindra sizzled at the top of the order as New Zealand gunned down a 346-run target in their opening World Cup warm-up game against Pakistan in Hyderabad on Friday.

Barring the openers, Pakistan batters including Mohammad Rizwan (103 retired hurt off 91), Babar Azam (80 off 84), and Saud Shaukeel (75 off 53) had a good hit in the middle, helping their team post a daunting 345 for five in 50 overs.

Pakistan will take on Australia on October 3 in their second and final warm-up game.
