The International Cricket Council is on the lookout for a new female independent director after PepsiCo head Indra Nooyi’s six-year tenure came to an end last month. The world body is also set to get a new chairman after incumbent Greg Barclay’s refusal to seek a third term. Nooyi, who became ICC’s first independent woman director in 2018, has completed her full term. It is understood that ICC’s all-powerful board has already started looking for a high-profile name like Nooyi, who was one of the most sought after names in corporate world.

“The Board of Directors shall elect one individual who must be a female and who must meet the Director Eligibility Criteria to ensure that equality, diversity and inclusivity interests in the sport of Cricket are appropriately represented from time to time, and such individual so elected shall be a Director (the “Independent Director”),” the ICC statute makes clear.

A source close to the all-powerful ICC Board was asked about the exact criteria for the appointment and he said that it could be any woman of eminence — be it from corporate world or sports.

“It could be anyone who has contributed in sports, business or in general. Just for example, it could be a Meg Lanning, a Charlotte Edwards or someone powerful from business community. Basically anyone who is eligible and person of eminence with contribution to sport,” the source said.

The Independent Director will be elected for a first two-year term by the Board of Directors from a list of at least three recommendations provided by the Nominations Committee. She will also be eligible to vote during the chairman’s election.

The big-hitting Suryakumar Yadav is the highest placed Indian at second spot, while young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal occupies the sixth position in the ICC T20I batting rankings issued on Wednesday. Ruturaj Gaikwad has dropped a place to the eighth position in the T20 batters’ list, which was updated following India’s recent 4-1 series triumph over Zimbabwe. Jaiswal was the big winner following his 141 runs in the series as he rose four places, behind No.1 ranked batter Travis Head of Australia and Suryakumar.

Shubman Gill, who led India against Zimbabwe in the absence of senior players and was the leading run-scorer of the series with 170 runs from five innings, moved up a whopping 36 places to 37th.

No Indian features in the top 10 of the T20I bowlers rankings. Axar Patel, who was rested for the Zimbabwe series, dropped four places to 13th spot.

Fast bowler Mukesh Kumar and spinner Washington Sundar also made upward movements.

Mukesh, who scalped eight wickets from three games, has gained 36 places to rise to 46th spot. Washington, who picked up eight wickets in five matches, has risen 21 spots to 73rd rank.

England’s Adil Rashid is leading T20I bowlers’ chart ahead of South Africa’s Anrich Nortje and Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka.

In the T20I all-rounders’ rankings, India’s Hardik Pandya dropped four places to sixth while Axar slipped one rung to 13th.

Washington (41st) and Shivam Dube (43rd) have risen by eight and 35 places to 41st abd 43rd spots respectively.

Sri Lanka’s Hasaranga continues to top the all-rounders’ list ahead os Australia’s Marcus Stoinis and Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza.

Find A Structured Way Of T20 Take Over: Brian Lara Urges ICC To Save Test Cricket https://artifexnews.net/find-a-structured-way-of-t20-take-over-brian-lara-urges-icc-to-save-test-cricket-5618161/ Wed, 08 May 2024 15:23:21 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/find-a-structured-way-of-t20-take-over-brian-lara-urges-icc-to-save-test-cricket-5618161/ Read More “Find A Structured Way Of T20 Take Over: Brian Lara Urges ICC To Save Test Cricket” »

Admitting that T20 leagues have devoured a lot of Test cricket’s space, West Indian legend Brian Lara has appealed to the ICC to step in to give a structure to the unrelenting invasion of the franchise-based tournaments. In the latest instance that fuelled questions over the relevance of Tests, South Africa recently sent an under-strength squad to New Zealand as their first-choice players were involved in the SA20 at home. “I think ICC (should) put their head together and find a way where franchise cricket takes over, but in a much more structured way and not in terms of the free fall that is going on at the moment,” Lara said in an interaction with PTI editors at its headquarters which was facilitated by Star Sports where he is a commentator and expert for the ongoing IPL.

“I hope the astute thinkers could find a way to make sure that it (Test) remains relevant. I like the Test Championship and I think it is important to make sure that the game remains relevant.” So, is cricket now taking the football route where leagues take precedence over international assignments? While Lara agreed in principle to the point, he found differences too in the two models.

“Well, yes (cricket following the football way). Let’s just look at football. For instance, other than the big cups – European cups, World Cup, South American cups – they may have a few friendlies. So, Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City, they have their footballers generally for 11 months of the year.

“That seems to be working for football. It’s taken off the burden as well for each country to be finding ways of making money by having football matches,” Lara began.

But Lara said the wealth being accumulated among three big nations – India, Australia and England – presented a rather different scenario in cricket.

“The West Indies now is in a situation where our gate receipts can’t make us survive. So, we are very thankful whenever India tours the West Indies. It’s a lot of TV rights money passing around which is great.

“So, it’s hard to see outside of the big three – Australia, England and India – how countries are going to survive when economically it’s tough for them.” From a cricketing perspective, the elegant left-hander said teams often not having their best players available also make things tough for teams outside the big three.

Lara might have had someone like Trent Boult in mind as the pacer recently turned down New Zealand central contract to become a T20 freelancer.

“Secondly, they (teams) don’t have their best players playing because their best players are making a living for their family elsewhere (leagues),” he added.

In March this year, BCCI had introduced a Test Cricket Incentive Scheme, an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee, to ensure parity with match fees in other formats and leagues.

Lara welcomed the step but added that bringing spectators to the ground was equally paramount to sustain the game and the sponsors’ interest.

“Incentivizing, or what BCCI is doing because they have the money, is one aspect of it. Of course, remuneration to the players is great to keep them interested in the game.

“But when you’re walking to a Test match and there’s nobody at that Test match, then it’s not encouraging. Try to get them (crowd) back into the ground,” said Lara.

The Trinidadian said having a stadium packed to the rafters is important from the sponsors’ view as well.

“I’m almost sure you’ve experienced it in India, where a sponsor preferred to spend his money on three hours of cricket instead of five days of cricket. ‘Hey, you have five days to promote your product.’ “The corporate person will say: ‘But there’s nobody to promote it to. Give me three hours. I will pay even more money.’ So, I think getting the crowd back is also something that should be discussed,” he explained.

While Lara has little doubt that the T20 version caters to spectators’ demands, he said the modern-day viewers should be educated about the unique ebbs and flow of five-day cricket.

“Well, I hope it hasn’t (Test not losing relevance). The shorter version of the game is taken over and it is entertainment and that’s what people look for. We haven’t educated the present-day public about the importance of batting a session and not losing a wicket.”

Pakistani presenter Zainab Abbas, part of the ICC digital team covering the ODI Cricket World Cup, on Monday left India after facing backlash on social media over her alleged anti-India posts in the past but the sport’s governing body insisted that she left the country due to personal reasons. Zainab left India from Hyderabad where she was deputed to cover Pakistan’s three World Cup games in the city. The 35-year-old was present at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad for Pakistan’s World Cup opener against the Netherlands on October 6. Posts from her unverified X account, formerly Twitter, had gone viral after she announced that she would be covering the ICC mega event in India.

As speculation on social media intensified over her departure from India in the middle of the tournament, the International Cricket Council clarified that Zainab was not deported from the host country.

“Zainab has not been deported, she has left for personal reasons,” an ICC spokesperson told PTI. The presenter, who arrived in Hyderabad last week, was supposed to travel to cities where Pakistan are scheduled to play, including Bengaluru, Chennai and Ahmedabad.

Former Pakistan players Rameez Raja and Waqar Younis are in India as part of the commentary panel for the ODI showpiece, which began on October 5 and will end on November 19.

The Pakistan cricket team got a rousing reception at the Hyderabad airport on September 27, marking its arrival to the country after seven years.

The cricketers, including skipper Babar Azam, have acknowledged the overwhelming support they have been getting in India since their arrival.

Notorious social media influencer and serial pitch invader Daniel Jarvis aka Jarvo was apprehended by the security authorities at the MA Chidambaram Stadium after he entered the ground wearing India blues before the start of their World Cup match against Australia on Sunday. The ICC banned Jarvo from attending further matches in the tournament. But the question remains how did he get access to the VIP area and could breach multiple security layers to enter Field of Play (FOP). “The individual concerned has been banned from attending any further games at the event and the matter is in the hands of the Indian authorities,” ICC spokesperson stated when PTI enquired about the breach.

This is the fourth time the Englishman, considered as a nuisance across all venues in the UK, has managed to breach security in a match involving India.

It must have left ICC as well as BCCI embarrassed as Jarvo, wearing the India jersey, coolly entered the venue just as the Indian team were lining up for the march past, trying to move closer to team’s biggest star, Virat Kohli.

Initially startled, the Indian team’s security officer quickly grasped the man and escorted him outside the venue even as Kohli wasn’t one bit amused.

Jarvo had been banned from English grounds after he repeatedly showed loopholes in England’s security system by entering the playing arena at his will during the 2021 series against India.

Someone known for his notoriety, he has often been picked up by security and then left as no one has taken it as a serious matter.

“The safety and security of everyone involved in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is our priority. We will work with the venue to understand what happened and consider if any additional security measures are required to prevent it happening again,” ICC spokesperson’s statement to PTI read.

While Indian supporters are at their wits end to procure tickets, disruptors like Jarvo getting premium VIP passes should leave both BCCI and TNCA red-faced.
