“We can feel the energy in Srinagar, that we gain through Yoga. I extend greetings to people of the country and people performing Yoga in every corner of the world on Yoga Day. International Yoga Day has completed a historic journey of 10 years. In 2014, I proposed International Yoga Day at the United Nations. PM Modi will lead the celebrations of the 10th International Day of Yoga at Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar.

“This year in India, a 101-year-old woman Yoga teacher from France was accorded the Padma Shri. She had never come to India but she dedicated her entire life to creating awareness about Yoga. Today, research on Yoga is being done in prestigious universities and institutions around the world; research papers are being published,” the PM said.

The 30-minute yoga session was supposed to begin at 7 am but was delayed due to the rain. The event is being attended by, among others, Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha and Ayush Minister Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav.

The yoga event will take place on the banks of Srinagar’s Dal Lake.

Srinagar:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the 10th International Yoga Day celebrations this morning from Jammu and Kashmir — an event that has received massive national and global attention in which the location plays no small part.

Here are top 10 points on this big story:

  1. The yoga event took place on the banks of Srinagar’s Dal Lake, at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Self and Society”, emphasises yoga’s vital role in fostering individual well-being and social harmony.

  2. Moderate to heavy rain was reported throughout the Kashmir Valley. Rainfall was also witnessed around Dal Lake. PM Modi did different yoga asanas in an indoor hall along with a reduced number of guests due to the rain in Srinagar.

  3. The 30-minute yoga session was supposed to begin at 7 am but was delayed due to the rain. The event is being attended by, among others, Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha and Ayush Minister Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav.

  4. Over the years, PM Modi has led Yoga Day celebrations at various iconic locations, including Delhi’s Kartavya Path, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi and Jabalpur. Last year, he led the events at the UN Headquarters in New York, which is expected to bring more attention to the Srinagar programme.

  5. Jammu and Kashmir has made headlines lately because of its record turnouts during the recently concluded general election and the terror backlash that followed.  This month, four attacks have taken place in the Jammu region, including the attack on a busful of pilgrims in Reasi district that claimed 10 lives.

  6. Massive security drills have taken place in and around Srinagar. High alert has been declared across the district. The Special Protection Group has conducted mock drills on all the routes leading to the SKICC. The venue of the function – taken over by the SPG two days ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit — has been thoroughly sanitised.

  7. In addition to SPG, Marco commandos of the navy are stationed around the SKICC. Deep combing operations have regularly been taking place at the Dal Lake. The area has been declared a “No-drone zone”.

  8. As a special initiative, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is organising a unique initiative, ‘Yoga for Space’, to mark the International Day of Yoga 2024. All scientists and officials of ISRO will perform Yoga together as per the Common Yoga Protocol guidelines.

  9. The team from the Gaganyaan project is also set to join the global campaign of International Yoga Day by practicing yoga on the occasion.

  10. The Prime Minister, who reached Srinagar today, is on his first visit to the state after being elected for a historic third term. At an event for the young people on Thursday evening at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex, he said the assembly polls and statehood for Jammu and Kashmir are “not far off”.

Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India and combines physical postures (called asanas), breathing exercises (pranayamas) and meditation. Known for improving flexibility, strength and balance, it also benefits us mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

As we approach International Yoga Day 2024 on June 21, let’s look back at how this day came to be.

When was the first International Yoga Day celebrated?

The first International Yoga Day was celebrated on June 21, 2015. The idea for International Yoga Day was first proposed on September 27, 2014, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.

He spoke about yoga’s ancient heritage and its potential to foster global health and peace. PM Modi, at the time, stressed that yoga was not just about physical exercise but a way to discover a sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature.

Following this proposal, on December 11, 2014, the United Nations officially proclaimed June 21 as International Yoga Day. This decision was supported by 177 member states.

The theme for International Yoga Day 2024 is “Yoga for Self and Society.”

International Yoga Day: Significance

International Yoga Day aims to raise awareness about the many benefits of practising yoga and to encourage people worldwide to integrate yoga into their daily lives. Since its inception, it has grown into a global event with millions of participants from various cultures and backgrounds, all coming together to celebrate the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of yoga.

On this day, various events such as mass yoga sessions, workshops, and seminars are organized globally, often featuring renowned yoga practitioners.

The day aims to raise global awareness about how yoga improves physical health by improving flexibility, strength and endurance, and helps manage issues like back pain and heart problems.

Beyond physical benefits, yoga supports mental well-being by reducing stress, improving concentration and promoting mental clarity, with breathing exercises and meditation helping to manage anxiety and depression.

Spiritually, yoga fosters inner peace and self-awareness, guiding people toward a deeper connection with themselves.
