Former India batter Aakash Chopra feels star batter Rohit Sharma and young wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan might not play for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). There has been an uncertainity over Rohit’s future at MI ever since he was relieved of his captaincy duties by franchise. MI appointed Hardik as captain for IPL 2024 but the five-time champions endured a disastrous season, finishing at the bottom of the 10-team points table. Sharing his views on MI’s possible strategy for IPL 2025 mega auction, Chopra suggested that Rohit might’ve played his last game for the franchise.

He also added that keeper-batter Kishan might be released by the team due to his price tag. However, he suggested that MI might use the ‘Right to Match’ card on Kishan if needed.

“I think they will let Ishan Kishan go. They might use the ‘Right to Match’ card because 15.5 crores is just too much money. I don’t think Ishan will be retained,” the ex India cricketer said on his YouTube channel.

“I think Rohit Sharma has played his last match for the Mumbai Indians, whether he doesn’t want to be retained or the franchise lets him go,” he added.

“Either way, I see them parting ways. I don’t think you will be seeing Rohit Sharma in the Mumbai Indians jersey again. That’s just my understanding. I might be wrong but I feel, either which way, Rohit Sharma will not be playing for the Mumbai Indians when you start the next season,” he further explained.

The next assignment for Rohit will be to lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. India will face Ireland in their tournament opener on June 5.

Hardik’s inclusion in the squad was a matter of discussion among experts but the selectors decided to show trust in the all-rounder as he was appointed the vice-captain.

The exclusion of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the list of centrally-contracted players was a decision that was solely taken by chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has revealed, asserting that “nobody is indispensable”. Kishan and Iyer were left out after failing to show up for domestic engagements despite a directive from the BCCI. While Kishan went on a long break after the end of the ODI World Cup last year and remained unavailable until the IPL, Iyer eventually did feature in a few matches for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy including the semifinal and the final.

However, Iyer still found himself at the receiving end after it emerged that he had attended a Kolkata Knight Riders’ camp in Mumbai when his domestic side was busy playing a Ranji Trophy fixture.

“You can check the constitution. I am just a convener (of the selection meeting),” he said during a media interaction at the BCCI head office here on Thursday.

“That decision lies with Ajit Agarkar, even when these two players (Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer) who did not play domestic (cricket), the decision to drop them (from the central contracts list) was only his.

“My role is just to implement. And we have got new players (in place), like Sanju (Samson). Nobody is indispensable,” he added.

Shah reiterated the Board’s position that Indian players will have to prioritise domestic cricket.

In the days leading up to the contract snub, Shah had stated before the third Test between India and England in February this year that he would completely back the chief selector’s decision for any action on players who do not comply with the Indian captain and team management’s requirement for participation in domestic cricket.

Shah said he spoke with the players after their exclusion.

“Yes, I had spoken with them. Media had even carried the reports,” he said.

“Even Hardik (Pandya) said if BCCI is considering me for white-ball, then I am ready to play Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Any player will have to play, even if they do not want to, they will have to,” Shah continued.

Talking about high scores in this year’s IPL, Shah said ultimately, it comes down to who is playing well and who, as a player, can sustain performance.

“Whoever plays well in the IPL… like say Ishan Kishan, he finds it difficult to take part with the Indian team but he can play in Mumbai Indians as a player. There he can play in a relaxed manner.

“In Team India, you have to prove yourself, give back to back performances. The one who can handle that can be described as a right player,” he added.

Shah also revealed details of his conversation with Kishan, which took place after Mumbai Indians’ match against Gujarat Titans.

“No, I did not advise him anything. It was just a friendly talk that he should do well and I speak with all players like that,” he said.

While there have been a few media reports mentioning an increase in the match fees for domestic players in the country, Shah said there is no such plan.

“We have increased the pay anyway and also incentivised Test cricket. We had increased the pay by 100 per cent in 2022,” Shah added.

Former Indian cricket team opener Aakash Chopra believes that the injury to Hardik Pandya will hamper the balance of the team ahead of the Cricket World Cup 2023 match against New Zealand on Sunday. Pandya suffered an injury during the match against Bangladesh and he was ruled out of the next match in Dharamsala. Chopra picked Suryakumar Yadav to replace Pandya and as a result, he believes that Shardul Thakur will be replaced by pacer Mohammed Shami to strengthen the bowling.

Hardik underwent scans following the injury in Pune on Thursday and is heading to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for his recovery.

India will play New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 22.

“Team India vice-captain Hardik Pandya sustained an injury to his left ankle while fielding off his own bowling during India’s match against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune,” said the BCCI in a statement.

“The all-rounder was taken for scans and is advised rest. He will be under the constant supervision of the BCCI Medical Team. He will not be taking the flight to Dharamsala with the team on 20th October and will now join the team directly in Lucknow where India play England,” the board added.

In all likelihood, KL Rahul will be Rohit Sharma‘s deputy for the New Zealand game. Rahul captained the side in the bilateral series against Australia in Rohit Sharma and Pandya’s absence.

India have a long gap between the Dharamsala and Lucknow game, which is scheduled for October 29.

The Indian will players get a short break after the New Zealand game and are expected reassemble in Lucknow on October 26.

Hardik lends a critical balance to the side and it remains to be seen, what combination the team goes with in his absence. In Hardik’s presence, India have the cushion of six bowling options and his finishing skills come in handy at number six.

Keeping the batting strength intact will be key and hence one among Suryakumar Yadav or Ishan Kishan is likely to figure in the playing XI.

Aakash Chopra’s picks for Indian cricket team playing XI against New Zealand in Cricket World Cup 2023:Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.

Virat Kohli had to leave the field for some time during the India vs Pakistan clash at the Cricket World Cup 2023 as he was wearing the wrong jersey at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday. While the other Indian cricket team players were sporting a jersey with the tri-colour stripes on their shoulder, Kohli’s jersey had three white stripes. Kohli realised the mistake mid-match and had to rush back to the dugout to change the jersey. He was back in action after some time with the crowd cheering him on.

India skipper Rohit Sharma on Saturday won the toss and elected to bowl first against Pakistan in a blockbuster Cricket World Cup 2023 match expected to be attended by 120,000 fans.

Opening batsman Shubman Gill returns to the team and takes the place of Ishan Kishan after recovering from dengue fever and missing the first two matches.

“Cannot get bigger than this, fantastic atmosphere,” Rohit said at the toss as the home crowd roared.

“Sure lot of us are going to experience something really extraordinary.”

Favourites India come into the match unbeaten with victories over five-time winners Australia and Afghanistan.

Pakistan, who also won their two matches against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka, come in unchanged from their previous win.

Against Sri Lanka, they chased down a World Cup record of 345 in Hyderabad.

Skipper Babar Azam said he would have also fielded first had he won the toss.

“We also wanted to bowl first,” he said. “We have had good two wins, momentum and confidence is high. Jam-packed stadium, we will enjoy it.”

The world’s biggest cricket stadium was a sea of blue due to a largely Indian presence after Pakistan fans from across the boder were unable to secure visas.

The inclusion of Suryakumar Yadav in the Indian cricket team squad for Cricket World Cup 2023 was met with a lot of criticism from both experts and fans. The explosive batter made a name for himself in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and T20I matches but his form in ODI cricket left a lot to be desired. Be it the lack of consistency or how he paces his innings, a question mark always loomed over his prospects in the World Cup. However, back-to-back half centuries against Australia just ahead of the tournament proved to be a major confidence boost for him and against Pakistan on Saturday, he can prove to be the X-factor.

At present, there is no guarantee that he will even make the playing XI with the batter not featuring the first two matches of Cricket World Cup 2023. The Indian cricket team went with three spinners in the match against Australia and against Afghanistan, Shardul Thakur replaced Ravichandran Ashwin. However, heading to Ahmedabad, the conditions are going to be far more batter-friendly and it is that factor precisely that opens the gates for Suryakumar to finally make his debut in the competition.

The Narendra Modi Stadium at Ahmedabad has traditionally favoured batters and with Shubman Gill not a certainty due to illness, India may find themselves looking to boost the batting line-up. In Gill’s absence, Ishan Kishan has taken his place as opener with Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya forming the middle order after Virat Kohli. However, Kishan and Iyer both failed to perform against Australia.

While the batters were back in good touch against Afghanistan, the bowling attack of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Shadab Khan will provide a significantly harder challenge. In that case, India may opt for five bowlers with Hardik Pandya being the third pace option and include Suryakumar as a specialist batter. In a pitch that is known to produce big scores, an extra batter can end up being a huge factor.

Suryakumar has played three matches at the venue for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and he has scored 93 runs with one half century and a strike rate of 138.81. While the difference in formats surely needs to be considered, his explosive style of batting is something that can prove crucial against Pakistan. It is a possibility that he can be used as the No. 6 batter after KL Rahul and that decision will mean that India will go into the match with a batting that extends till No. 8 in the form of Ravindra Jadeja.

India were off to a horrible start to the run chase against Australia in their opening match of Cricket World Cup 2023 on Sunday with skipper Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer all losing their wickets without scoring a single run. This was the second instance in Cricket World Cup history that both of India’s openers were dismissed for a duck in the same match. Before Kishan and Rohit, the dubious feat was achieved by Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Sunil Gavaskar who were dismissed without disturbing the scorers against Zimbabwe in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. That match is incidentally etched in history books thanks to a stupendous 175-run knock by Kapil Dev that left the cricketing world stunned. (Cricket World Cup Points Table | Cricket World Cup – India’s Full Schedue)

India beat Australia by six wickets to begin their ICC World Cup campaign on a positive note.

Half-centuries from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul powered India’s chase of 200 after the home team lost three wickets with just two runs on the board. Thanks to Kohli and Rahul’s 165-run partnership for the fourth wicket, India completed the task in 41.2 overs.

Earlier, India bowled out Australia for 199 following a disciplined effort with the ball.

Captain Pat Cummins opted to bat first after winning the toss but things didn’t go as planned for the visitors, who were reeling at 119 for five in the 30th over.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (3/38) did the bulk of the damage with his middle over blows.

Steven Smith top-scored for the Aussies with 46 off 71 balls, while David Warner made 41 from 52 balls.

India lost three wickets including skipper Rohit Sharma for a duck inside two overs as they chased a winning target of 200 to beat Australia in a key Cricket World Cup 2023 clash in Chennai on Sunday. Left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc struck in the first over to send back Ishan Kishan for a duck after the left-hander slashed at a delivery to get caught at slip. Josh Hazlewood then struck twice in one over to remove Rohit LBW on an incoming delivery and then Shreyas Iyer caught at covers also for nought to silence the home crowd.

Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja led India’s spin charge with figures of 3-28 to bowl out Australia for 199.

Five-time champions Australia won the toss and elected to bat first at Chennai’s M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in the 150th ODI meeting between the two cricket powerhouses, who opened their campaigns in the showpiece event.

But the Australian innings ended in 49.3 overs as Jadeja stood out in his 10 overs of left-arm spin. Fellow spinner Kuldeep Yadav and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each.

Australia lost an early wicket before veteran batsmen David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (46) hit back in a partnership of 69.

Former captain Virat Kohli made an early impact with a diving slip catch to send back Mitchell Marsh, for a six-ball duck, off Bumrah.

The left-handed Warner reached 1,000 World Cup runs, passing Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar‘s previous best landmark.

Warner needed 19 innings to Tendulkar’s 20.

Both Warner and Smith made their experience count with a steady approach on a tough batting pitch as India rotated their bowlers.

Kuldeep, a left-arm wrist spinner, broke the stand to send back Warner, caught and bowled amid a roar from the crowd that nearly filled the stadium in contrast to the empty seats in the other matches so far.

Smith stuck around with Marnus Labuschagne as runs came at a premium and a miserly Jadeja got his first wicket with his left-arm spin.

He bowled Smith to deny the former captain his fifty and then struck twice in his next over including wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey for a duck to rattle the opposition batting.

Wickets kept tumbling and Australia slipped further when Glenn Maxwell fell for 15, bowled off Kuldeep and Cameron Green out to Ravichandran Ashwin.

Australia collapsed from 110-2 to 140-7 before skipper Pat Cummins hit the first six of the match, but fell for 15 in another attempt to hit the ball beyond the boundary.

Number nine Mitchell Starc hit 28 to add some respect to the total.

The Indian cricket team will take on Australia in their opening match of Cricket World Cup 2023 in Chennai on Sunday. India defeated Australia 2-1 in the recently concluded ODI series just ahead of the Cricket World Cup and that will be a major boost for the Rohit Sharma-led side. India enter the competition as one of the favourites and they will be looking to start their campaign with a win over a formidable opponent. However, the absence of Shubman Gill due to illness can prove to be a problem for Rohit and Co but it can also be a major opportunity for Ishan Kishan.

A look at India’s predicted XI for the Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Australia –

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma will be captaining the Indian cricket team in Cricket World Cup 2023 and considering his records in the tournament, he will be expected to lead the team by example.

Ishan Kishan

With Shubman Gill potentially out of the match due to illness, it can prove to be an opportunity for Ishan Kishan. A right-left combination for the opening wicket is something that has been favoured by Indian team management and the inclusion of Kishan can be prove to be crucial for the hosts.

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is possibly one of the most popular cricketers going into the World Cup and every single Indian cricket team fan will be looking at the star to perform well against Australia. Kohli has a great record against Australia and he will be looking to start the World Cup campaign with a solid knock.

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer was out with injury for quite some time but couple of good performances against Australia in the ODI series has boosted his confidence quite a bit. He will be up against a familiar opposition and the fans can expect him to be top choice to bat at No. 4 for the Indian cricket team.

KL Rahul (WK)

KL Rahul is expected to be the wicket-keeper and play a big role in strengthening the middle-order at No. 5. Another player who came back from injury and enjoyed a good run of form in the matches ahead of the World Cup. He can even bat at No. 4 if the situation demands.

Hardik Pandya

The major all-rounder option for India – Hardik Pandya – is an important part of the team composition against Australia. Pandya is a solid batter in the middle-order and if he bowls 10 overs for the side, they will allow India to look at a variety of options while attacking the Australia batters.

Ravindra Jadeja

Brilliant fielder, effective batter and an impressive bowler – Ravindra Jadeja is a true triple-threat and along with Ashwin, he will be expected to work his magic on the traditionally spin-friendly Chennai pitch.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin made a sensational return to the Indian cricket team and after a good showing in the Australia ODIs, he was included in the World Cup squad in place of injured Axar Patel. Ashwin knows the Chennai track well and his inclusion can provide India with a major asset against Australia.

Kuldeep Yadav

India are expected to play three spinners in Chennai and Kuldeep Yadav will be a trump card considering his run of form. Kuldeep has recovered brilliantly after a lackluster 2022 and he will hold the key in the spin trio.

Jasprit Bumrah

The Indian pace department will be incomplete without Jasprit Bumrah and India will expect him to start firing from the very first match. A consistent performer for the side in the last couple of series and this World Cup is widely expected to be Bumrah’s tournament.

Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj left everyone stunned with his show in the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka and that will keep him ahead of Mohammed Shami. With three spinners in the team, a lot of responsibility will fall on Siraj and his movement can be key against Australia batters.
