Pacer Mohammed Shami played a pivotal in Team India’s brilliant outing at the ODI World Cup 2023. India remained unbeaten in the entire tournament but ended up losing against Australia in the final match. Shami, who played only seven games, scalped a whopping total of 24 wickets and became the highest wicket-taker of the tournament. However, Shami sustained an ankle injury during the World Cup and has been out of action, since then. Recently, the 33-year-old pacer returned to nets and started with his bowling practice.

Despite battling through the injury and missing the IPL 2024 and T20 World Cup 2024, Shami looked in a good shape. Recently, Shami appeared on a podcast where he revealed that star batter Virat Kohli and pacer Ishant Sharma are two of his best friends from the Indian team.

“Virat Kohli and Ishant Sharma are my best friends. They constantly kept calling me when I was injured,” Shami said on Shubhankar Mishra‘s podcast.

Shami also lashed out at former Pakistan captain Inzamam ul Haq for accusing pacer Arshdeep Singh of ball tampering during the T20 World Cup.

Shami himself was the target of a strange charge during the 2023 World Cup. Former Pakistan player Hasan Raza said that India were getting different type of balls, with a device implanted in it, and that was the reason Shami was getting extra swing.

“I have said in an interview that I will cut the ball and show if there is a device or not. Abhi ek aur namuna khod ke dia hai inhone. They said, ‘How can Arshdeep Singh get reverse swing?’ I want to say only one thing to Inzamam bhai. I respect him a lot. If you do the same thing, isn’t it ball-tampering? Those who do well against them, will be their target. India and Pakistan are arch-rivals,” Shami said.

“I don’t expect that despite being ex-players you can say such thing. Even Wasim Akram said how umpires give you the ball and it is not possible to plant any device in it. This type of cartoongiri is not good. These statements are there to fool people.”

Following the Delhi Capitals’ (DC) final league game of the IPL 2024, which they won by 19 runs against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), India pacer Ishant Sharma revealed the special bond with DC head coach Ricky Ponting, saying the Australian is like his elder brother. Ishant was the star for Delhi on Tuesday night where anything less than a loss would have confirmed their elimination from playoff contention. He was adjudged the player of the match for his bowling figures of 3/34 in four overs which included three crucial scalps of Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda, giving his side an excellent start while defending 209 target.

“We’re not coach and player anymore, he’s a kind of elder brother to me. He’s always there whenever I need him, I can call him anytime.I think it’s very great to have him as a coach. If you have someone like him who really pushes you to keep on trying new things and don’t be afraid if you don’t do well,” said Ishant in a video shared by the IPL on X.

Ponting added: “We were fierce competitors on the field as you would expect a young Indian fast bowler early on in his Test career trying to prove a point. He gave me bit of a working one day at the WACA before he eventually got me out. It’s been a pleasure to coach and work with him.

“He’s a great guy, we’ve actually become very close. We’ve got great respect for one another. He’s been a terrific leader of this bowling attack for the last four five years.”

With 14 points in as many matches, Delhi are placed fifth in the points table and awaits result of remaining matches to decide their fate in the tournament.

Commanding fifties from Abishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs was complemented by a clinical bowling effort as Delhi Capitals kept their slim IPL play-off hopes alive with a 19-run win over Lucknow Super Giants in their final league fixture on Tuesday. Porel (58 off 33 balls) and Shai Hope (38 off 27 balls) shared 92 runs off 49 balls to give the hosts an aggressive start. Tristan Stubbs (57 not out off 25) then hammered three fours and four maximums in his blitzkrieg and added 47 and 50 runs with Rishabh Pant (33) and Axar Patel (14 not out) to power DC to 208 for 4. The bowlers then joined the party to restrict the visitors to 189 for 9, despite a belligerent 27-ball 61 from Nicholas Pooran and a 33-ball 58 not out by Arshad Khan.

After the loss in their penultimate league game, LSG are all but out of the play-off race. DC’s win paved the way for Rajasthan Royals qualification to the play-offs.

Delhi moved to 14 points, same as Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, and their playoff chances depends on a sequence of other results.

Chasing 209, LSG couldn’t recover from a nightmarish start as Ishant (3/34), who replaced Porel as impact sub, removed both openers KL Rahul (5), Quinton de Kock (12) and Deepak Hooda (0) in his opening spell.

Marcus Stoinis (5) was then bamboozled by Axar, while Stubbs had Ayush Badoni (6) caught at boundary line as LSG lost half their side for 71 in 8th over.

Pooran hit six fours and four sixes to keep the runrate high as LSG reached 100 in 11th over. But once he was dismissed by Mukesh Kumar with Axar producing a special effort, Arshad Khan took centerstage slamming five sixes and three fours to keep them in the chase.

Arshad added 33 runs each with Krunal Pandya (18) and Yudhvir Singh (14) to bring down the equation to 29 off last 12 balls. But Mukesh and Rasikh Salam bowled superbly to limit them in the end.

Earlier, DC’s most dangerous batter Jake Fraser-McGurk fell to a trap at long-on but Porel took the onus, smashing six boundaries and four sixes during his stay. He cut the third ball of his innings over third man off Mohsin before picking up three fours and a six off Arshad Khan.

Porel drove through the offside, cut and pulled anything short to race away to his second fifty of this IPL off 21 balls.

Hope too stepped up with two fours and a six off Yudhvir Singh as DC crossed the 50-mark in a jiffy.

Naveen was welcomed with a six by Porel, who sent him to the second tier next with another pull to take DC to 73 for one in powerplay.

Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi (1/26) broke the partnership after having the West Indian caught as KL Rahul held on to the catch in his second attempt.

Naveen then removed Porel, who was caught by Pooran at the boundary rope, leaving DC were 111 for 3 in 12th over.

With Bishnoi keeping things tight, runs slowed down but Pant picked up two fours once Krunal Pandya was back in attack. Mohsin, however, gave just four in his third over as DC reached 136 for 3 in 15 overs.

Stubbs then exploded with a six and two fours off Arshad in an 18-run over but Pant holed out to Hooda at long-on while going for a maximum off Naveen.

Stubbs slammed Mohsin for a maximum before clobbering two more sixes off Naveen to reach his fifty in 22 balls. He added 50 off 22 balls with Axar Patel (14) as 72 came in last five overs. PTI ATK ATK BS BS

“You Rarely Get To See Such Moments”: Zaheer Khan On Virat Kohli-Ishant Sharma Banter https://artifexnews.net/you-rarely-get-to-see-such-moments-zaheer-khan-on-virat-kohli-ishant-sharma-banter-5656367/ Mon, 13 May 2024 17:36:38 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/you-rarely-get-to-see-such-moments-zaheer-khan-on-virat-kohli-ishant-sharma-banter-5656367/ Read More ““You Rarely Get To See Such Moments”: Zaheer Khan On Virat Kohli-Ishant Sharma Banter” »

After the completion of the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League 2024, former India speedster Zaheer Khan spoke about the banter between Virat Kohli and Ishant Sharma on Sunday. RCB continued with their second-half surge, making it five wins in five matches and climbing up to the fifth spot with a 47-run win over DC at their home ground of M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After losing seven of the first eight league games, RCB has turned their season around with five successive wins to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The former cricketer asserted that Kohli and Ishant’s moments rarely happen on the field.

“When things are slipping out of your hands, you have to back yourself to take the wicket of a big player. It was the first time he’d dismissed him, so that was a great moment, especially their banter. Winning and losing is a part of the game. Sometimes you will be hit for runs and sometimes, you will take a wicket, and that oversaw both of those things. You rarely get to see moments like these, even their banter, especially from Virat Kohli. They are good friends and that’s why we got such a great moment, it’s part of the game,” Zaheer said on Jio Cinema.

Coming to the match, DC opted to bowl first after winning the toss. Knocks from Rajat Patidar (52 in 32 balls), Will Jacks (41 in 29 balls,), Cameron Green (32* in 24 balls, with one four and two sixes) and Virat Kohli (27) took RCB to 187/9 in their 20 overs.

Rasikh Salam (2/23) and Khaleel Ahmed (2/31) were the pick of the bowlers for DC.

In the run-chase of 188 runs, Delhi was restricted to 30/4 at one point. A partnership of 56 runs between Shai Hope (29 in 23 balls) and Axar Patel helped DC back into the game. Stand-in captain, Axar scored his second half-century of the season, making 57 in 39 balls to keep his side alive. However, RCB bowlers kept the run flow in control and bundled out DC for 140 runs in 19.1 overs, winning by 47 runs.

Yash Dayal (3/20) and Lockie Ferguson (2/23) were among the top bowlers for RCB.

Cameron Green secured the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his knock of 32*, figures of 1/19 in four overs and a run-out of in-form Tristan Stubbs.

RCB’s fifth consecutive win has catapulted them to fifth place on the points table, a position that appeared practically unattainable three weeks ago when they fell by a run to KKR, their sixth defeat in a row. They currently have 12 points, with a potential to reach 14 when they play CSK in their final league game. The Men in Yellow have 14 points. A win in this game might offer them a chance to enter the playoffs, but only if other outcomes go their way since SRH and LSG (two games left for each side, both have 12 points) can both advance to 16 points and knock RCB out.

During the match, both teams had several moments of lighthearted banter.

Virat Kohli hit Ishant Sharma for a boundary and a six in his second over, creating a brief exchange of words between the fast bowler and the batter. However, Ishant got the final word when Kohli left for 27 runs after nicking a wide ball to the wicketkeeper two deliveries later. Ishant exclaimed with delight before engaging in a cordial exchange with Ishant Sharma. The bowler then came to a halt in front of Kohli, giving him a tug in jubilation.

Later in the match, when the Delhi Capitals lost wickets at regular intervals in their quest of 188 runs, Ishant Sharma joined the crease at number 11, and the two exchanged light-hearted banter.

MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli have been often compared for their captaincy, despite having different leadership styles. While Dhoni transformed white-ball cricket in India, leading the team to multiple ICC tournaments, Kohli’s India ruled Test cricket for a period of three-four years, including multiple series wins in Australia. However, veteran pacer Ishant Sharma, who played majority of his cricket under Dhoni’s leadership, labelled Kohli as “the best”. While speaking on JioCinema’s ‘Home of Heroes’ show, Ishant said that Dhoni groomed the fast bowlers before handing them over to Kohli, who took them to their prime.

“He (Kohli) was the best. When Virat was captain, bowling was complete. When we were playing under Mahi bhai, we were in a transition phase. At that time, Shami and Umesh were new, and only I was there. Everyone else would rotate. Bhuvi was also new. There is no match for Mahi bhai as a communicator. But what he did was groom the bowlers and leave them with Virat. Shami and Umesh, over time, became different bowlers and then Jasprit came in. So, he got a complete package. The best thing he did was identify everyone’s traits, that he used to talk about one thing with one person and then Iet them be,” said Ishant.

The 34-year-old added that Kohli’s aggressive approach, coupled with his ability to identify roles of each player, made him special.

“First thing, he was aggressive. If you’re bowling with the new ball, you can concede 25 runs in five overs as long as you take two wickets. The important thing was that he gave everyone defined roles. After 2021, I realized he wanted all of us to think out of the box,” the veteran pacer added.

For the record, Kohli (63.38) has a much higher win percentage than Dhoni (53.61) as captain of India. Only Rohit Sharma has a better win percentage than Kohli, but the former has played far less games as captain.
