Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala turned on the style, laying on goals for each other, as a new-look Germany beat Hungary 5-0 in Duesseldorf on Saturday. The young forwards showed the future is bright for the football-mad nation after the retirements of 2014 World Cup winners Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos and Thomas Mueller, along with captain Ilkay Gundogan. After 27 minutes, Wirtz found Musiala who squared for Niclas Fuellkrug to open the scoring.

Wirtz’s long pass allowed Musiala to double Germany’s lead in the second-half, with the Bayern Munich forward returning the favour with an assist shortly after.

Aleks Pavlovic scored with 13 minutes remaining — his first goal in Germany colours — before Kai Havertz won and converted a penalty with nine minutes remaining.

With Wirtz and Musiala both 21 and Havertz 25, the convincing win suggests Germany has the talent to overcome this summer’s departures, two years out from the 2026 World Cup.

“It’s fun to play with Flo (Wirtz)” Musiala told ZDF, adding “we need to keep building our chemistry, using every game.”

“It’s a lot of fun,” Fuellkrug told ZDF. “I really enjoyed watching when Flo and Jamal got into it in the second half — they’re pretty hard to stop when they’re like that.

“We’re really lucky to have them in the team — it’s a gift. It’ll be fun for every German fan watching in the next few years.”

New captain Joshua Kimmich said “to start so dominantly and with such gravity — I’m just proud of the team.”

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, who on Friday doubled down on his publicly stated desire to win the next World Cup, praised the atmosphere in the camp.

“The chemistry is incredible and has been like that for three or four months — and we’ll need that if we want to fulfil our dreams.”

Nagelsmann praised Wirtz and Musiala, saying “when both are up for it and they step on the gas, it’s going to be tough.

“When they’re on the pitch and they connect with each other, it’s nice to watch.”

– New-look Germany –

Former Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross was asked to fill Kroos’ boots, while goalie Marc-Andre ter Stegen wore the Germany number one for the first time.

Unable to find a way to play the two forwards alongside each other at the Euros, Nagelsmann started both Fuellkrug and Havertz.

Yet to score since moving to West Ham in the summer, Fuellkrug gave Germany the lead after 27 minutes.

Wirtz found Musiala with a sublime chip, allowing the Bayern forward to square for Fuellkrug to score his 14th goal in 22 international matches.

Havertz missed two clear chances to close the opening half and Hungary were strong early in the second, until Wirtz unleashed Musiala on the counter to score after 58 minutes.

Musiala returned the favour just eight minutes later, cutting the ball for Wirtz who hit a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

The goals opened the floodgates for the home side, with Aleks Pavlovic — who missed Euro 2024 with illness — scoring just before Havertz sealed the result from the spot.

Germany travel to face the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Tuesday, while Hungary host Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Harry Kane Helps Bayern Munich To Win At Wolfsburg On Vincent Kompany Debut https://artifexnews.net/harry-kane-helps-bayern-munich-to-win-at-wolfsburg-on-vincent-kompany-debut-6416813/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 17:07:21 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/harry-kane-helps-bayern-munich-to-win-at-wolfsburg-on-vincent-kompany-debut-6416813/ Read More “Harry Kane Helps Bayern Munich To Win At Wolfsburg On Vincent Kompany Debut” »

Harry Kane helped drag Bayern Munich to a come-from-behind 3-2 win at Wolfsburg on Sunday in new manager Vincent Kompany‘s Bundesliga debut. Jamal Musiala put Bayern 1-0 up after 19 minutes but Wolfsburg took the lead with two Lovro Majer goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Bayern were nervy, with Ralph Hasenhuettl’s side pouncing on several defensive errors. A Kane header forced Wolfsburg’s Jakub Kaminski into an own goal after 65 minutes and the England captain set up Bayern’s third, laying on a pass for Serge Gnabry‘s 82nd-minute strike.

“It’s not perfect yet”, Kane told Bayern TV after the match, saying his side “got punished a little” in the second-half.

“We’re still obviously implementing some of the ideas of the coach.

“Obviously, the team is a lot stronger than this. I’m happy we’ve got a good week to work now, to get to work on the ideas the coach wants.”

Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich echoed Kane’s sentiments on network DAZN, saying “we lost control of the game due to many mistakes”, adding they “reacted well” when they fell 2-1 behind.

With 20 minutes gone, Kane, starting his first match since the Euro 2024 final in Berlin, found Sacha Boey on the right flank.

The French defender dribbled past two Wolfsburg defenders and cut the ball across for Musiala, who tapped home to open the scoring.

Musiala has six goals in eight games against Wolfsburg, more than any other side.

Cool Majer

Wolfsburg were lucky to get away with what appeared to be a handball in the box 10 minutes later, with Kane shown a yellow card for remonstrating with the referee.

Bystanders in the first-half, Wolfsburg burst into life early in the second, grabbing the lead inside the first 10 minutes.

Boey, who was making just his second start for Bayern since joining in January, went from hero to villain just a minute after the break, bringing down Tiago Tomas in the box.

Majer coolly slotted home, sending Manuel Neuer the wrong way.

The Croatia midfielder hit the post with Neuer flatfooted just a minute later but did not need to wait long for another opportunity, his 55th-minute goal putting Wolfsburg in front.

Patrick Wimmer pressed Kim Min-jae into a mistake, collected possession and advanced on goal, drawing Neuer and laying off for Majer to score.

Kane was crucial in helping Bayern draw level after 65 minutes. The England captain headed a deflected Joshua Kimmich cross goalwards and the ball bounced in off Wolfsburg’s Kaminski.

Kane created Bayern’s winner with eight minutes remaining, finding Gnabry who booted home from close range.

Bundesliga winners in 2009, Wolfsburg have not beaten Bayern since 2015, a run of 21 matches.

Later on Sunday, promoted St Pauli host Heidenheim in the final match of the round.

Teenage Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel struck late as his side came from behind to beat FC Copenhagen 2-1 in their Champions League clash in the Danish capital on Tuesday. Bayern lacked fluidity and struggled against an impressive Copenhagen side, who grabbed the lead early in the second half thanks to Lukas Lerager‘s opener. With Bayern in danger of losing their first Champions League group stage match since September 2017, Thomas Tuchel’s men upped the ante, Jamal Musiala equalising with a superb solo effort.

Tel, brought on in the 77th minute alongside Thomas Mueller with just seven minutes remaining, collected the ball from the Bayern veteran before unleashing a winner past the helpless home goalkeeper Kamil Grabara.

Super-sub Tel has now scored five of his six goals after coming off the bench and ensured Bayern won their 15th group stage match in a row.

Tuchel told Amazon Prime he had been trying to replace Musiala when the forward scored the equaliser.

“He’s returning from a muscle injury and we’d tried to take him off,” Tuchel said with a smile.

Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich thanked Mueller and Tel, who came off the bench to combine for the winner. “We’ve got great quality on the bench and they’ve saved us often this season.”

Injury-hit Bayern came into the match with only two recognised centre-backs and had spent the week courting former defender Jerome Boateng, 35, in the hopes of securing a short-term deal.

Even with a full contingent, Bayern had been worryingly leaky in defence in recent weeks, with 10 goals they have conceded in the past four matches too many for a side who spent big in the summer hoping for a seventh European title this season.

Despite Tuchel’s frequent complaints of a “thin” squad, he named a full strength side including star striker Harry Kane, speaking before the match of his “great respect for every Champions League opponent”.

The first half went by largely without incident, Bayern again struggling to find fluidity against an opponent willing to press hard and fight as they did in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at RB Leipzig.

While the German champions were able to rebound immediately in that match to overcome a two-goal deficit to draw, Copenhagen drew first blood, taking the lead 10 minutes into the second half.

Bayern’s Kim Min-jae blocked a powerful shot from winger Viktor Claesson, but the ball fell to Lerager, who crashed in a first-time shot.

The shellshocked visitors looked to get back in the game immediately and dominated possession, but Copenhagen fought hard, wanting to avoid again dropping points from a winning position as they had done while 2-0 up at Galatasaray to draw in their opening game.

With just over 20 minutes remaining, Musiala took it upon himself to drag Bayern back into the game, shedding two defenders while holding a third at bay to slam home past Grabara.

As he has done several times this season, Tuchel turned to Tel and the 18-year-old striker delivered almost immediately, scoring a stunner just six minutes after coming on to give Bayern the lead.

With less than a minute remaining, Bayern ‘keeper Sven Ulreich got his fingertips to a loose ball from a cross, helping the club keep their stellar group stage record intact.
