Coming into the tournament as favourites, a wounded Indian women’s hockey team rose from the shock semifinal loss to edge past defending champions Japan 2-1 and claim the bronze medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Saturday. The Indians, ranked seventh in the world, were the favourites to win the gold here but one bad match cost them dearly as hosts China thrashed them 4-0 in the semifinal on Thursday. The Indian women thus avenged their 0-1 defeat against Japan in the last edition of the Games in Jakarta in 2018. (Asian Games 2023 Medals Tally | Asian Games 2023 Full Schedule)

But the Savita Punia-led side left behind the disappointment and displayed commanding hockey to clinch its seventh Asian Games medal and fourth bronze.

Deepika gave India the lead in the fifth minute from a penalty stroke before Japan equalised through Yuri Nagai from a penalty corner in the 30th minute.

Sushila Chanu, a rare goal scorer, handed India the winning goal in the 50th minute from a set piece that went wrong.

India started brightly and went on the offensive from the onset.

The Indians pressed hard and that resulted in their first goal in the fifth minute through a penalty stroke, which was perfectly converted by Deepika.

India kept on pressing hard and secured a penalty corner but failed to convert the opportunity. The Japanese too threatened the Indians but the Savita-led side was upto to the task.

It was midfield tussle between the two in the second quarter with both sides managing a few circle entries but failed to yield any result.

Japan drew level at the stroke of half time through Nagai who converted a penalty corner.

After the change of ends, there was hardly anything to differentiate between the two sides. Both India and Japan were engaged in midfield battle with occasional entries into each other’s cicrrle.

After the change of ends, India continued to press hard and created a few chances but failed to pounce on them.

With deadlock still intact, the Indians went on full press in the fourth and final quarter and their efforts bore fruit as they managed to earn a few penalty corners.

India secured a penalty corner in the fourth quarter but vice-captain Deep Grace Ekka’s flick was saved by Japanese goalkeeper Eika Nakamura.

Vaisnavi Vitthal Phalke then missed a sitter from the the rebound from the following penalty corner.

India continued to mount constant pressure on the Japanese defence and secured three penalty corners in succession, the last of which resulted in the winner.

A rare goal scorer, Sushila was at the right place at the right time to scoop the ball in above the goalkeeper’s head after receiving a feed from Deep.

India then earned a few more penalty corners but failed to utilise them.

Just three minute from the hooter, India secured another penalty corner but but Deepika’s flick was saved by the Japanese goalkeeper.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh led admirably as the Indian men’s hockey team mauled defending champions Japan 5-1 to reclaim the Asian Games gold, their fourth in the continental showpiece, after nine years and qualify for next year’s Paris Olympics on Friday. The Indians, who had to be content with a bronze medal in the last edition in Jakarta, thus won their fourth Asian Games gold and first since the 2014 Incheon edition. India’s other gold medals came in 1966 and 1998, both times in Bangkok. South Korea won the bronze medal after eking out a close 2-1 win over hosts China.

Harmanpreet (32nd, 59th minutes) scored a brace through penalty corners, Amit Rohidas (36th) also sounded the board from a set-piece, while Manpreet Singh (25th) and Abhishek (48th) found the net from field efforts to register the famous victory for India.

Seren Tanaka converted a penalty corner for Japan in the 51st minutes.

Harmanpreet, thus, finished the tournament as India’s top scorer with 13 goals, one ahead of striker Mandeep Singh.

The Indians, who ended the tournament unbeaten, were by far the better side against Japan, whom they had defeated 4-2 in the pool stages.

The Indians mostly used the flanks to great effect to build their attacks and also used down-the-line long balls to perfection.

The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallists were quick to get off the blocks and made quite a few circle penetrations but failed to convert them into goals in the first quarter.

India played high-press hockey and constantly put the Japanese defence under pressure.

They got their first chance in the fifth minute but Lalit Upadhyay’s deflection from a pass from the left flank was saved by Japanese goalkeeper Takumi Kitagawa.

The Indians kept on pressing hard and, in the process, secured their first penalty corner of the match but Harmanpreet’s flick was brilliantly saved by an agile Kitagawa.

Two minutes into the second quarter, India earned another penalty corner but the variation didn’t work as Rohidas’s flick went over the post.

India continued their attacking hockey and finally took the lead in the 25th minute when Manpreet scored from a rebound with a powerful reverse hit from top of the circle after Abhishek’s initial try, from close range, was saved by the Japanese goalkeeper.

Two minutes from half-time, India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was alert in front of his goal and was perfectly placed to deny Japan’s try, blocking the ball with his legs.

Two minutes into the second half, India secured three consecutive penalty corners and this time Harmanpreet was bang on target with the final attempt, sounding the board with a powerful drag-flick to the left of Kitagawa’s extend left leg.

Minutes later, Rohidas tripled India’s lead, finding the net with a powerful high flick that beat Japan goalkeeper Kitagawa all ends up.

Shamsher Singh then came close to registering his name in the score sheet only to be denied by Kitagawa.

It was complete domination by the Indians as three minutes into the fourth and final quarter Abhishek made the scoreline 4-0 from a tight angle after receiving a pass from vice-captain Hardik Singh.

With nothing to lose, Japan woke up in the last 10 minutes and secured two back-to-back penalty corners and Tanaka pulled one back.

Harmanpreet added salt to Japan’s wounds when he converted his second penalty corner just a minute from the final hooter.

Young striker Abhishek fired two goals as India beat defending champions Japan 4-2 to register their third consecutive victory and take a giant step towards semi-final of the men’s hockey competition at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Thursday. Abhishek (13th, 48th minutes) scored two field goals, while Mandeep Singh (24th) and Amit Rohidas (34th) were the other scorers for India. Japan fought back in the final five minutes of the fourth and final quarter and scored two quick goals through Genki Mitani (57th) and Ryosei Kato (60) to reduce the margin of defeat.

After two easy wins, the confident Indians started brightly and secured their first penalty corner in the fifth minute but skipper Harmanpreet Singh’s flick went wide.

India conceded their first penalty corner of the tournament in the 12th minute but the Japanese failed to utilise the chance as goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak saved Shota Yamada’s try.

India secured another penalty corner soon but again the result was the same.

But an opportunistic Abhishek gave India the lead a minute later, scoring with a reverse stick after receiving an assist from Hardik Singh.

India earned another penalty corner but the Japanese defended bravely.

Seconds from the first quarter, Lalit Upadhyay’s timely deflection from Jarmanpreet Singh’s cross was saved by Japanese goalkeeper Takshi Yoshikawa.

India doubled their lead in the 24th minute through Mandeep, who dived full length to deflect in Nilkanta’s pass.

After the change of ends, India secured their fourth penalty corner but Sanjay’s flick was saved by Yoshikawa.

India secured back-to-back penalty corners soon, the second of which was converted by Rohidas with with a powerful drag-flick to the top right corner of Japan goal.

India looked threatening and continued to press hard on the Japanese defence in search of more goals as the third quarter ended.

Three minutes into the final quarter, India made the scoreline 4-0 when Abhishek combined well with Mandeep to score his second goal of the day.

But the Japanese didn’t bow down without a fight and came back strongly, scoring two quick goals in the last five minutes of the game.
