The Afghanistan vs Bangladesh T20 World Cup Super 8 game was a a widely followed one with the former making history with a maiden semi-final entry. Afghanistan needed to beat Bangladesh to be the second team from the Super 8 Group 1 after India to enter the last four stage. The Rashid Khan-led side did just that by keeping their composure in a low-scoring rain-affected match to knock out both Bangladesh and Australia from the semi-final race.

The Afghanistan vs Bangladesh match also saw a controversial moment, when the former’s Gulbadin Naib allegedly feigned injury after coach Jonathan Trott apparently sent signals slow down. Afghanistan were ahead of DLS with rain interrupting the match at that time. Naib immediately fell down on the ground. The act was criticised by social media with few accusing Afghanistan of ‘cheating’.

Commenting on the incident, India star cricketer R Ashwin wrote on X: “Red card for Gulbadin Naib”. To which the Afghanistan player replied: “Kabi khushi kabi gham main huta hai Hamstring”

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan sought to play down the incident.

“Well, he had some cramp, I don’t know what happened to him and I don’t know what’s going on in social media but that doesn’t matter – it’s just the end field injury which comes and then we haven’t lost any overs, the rain came and we just went off, it’s not something like brought a massive difference in the game,” Rashid khan.

“We came back on field after five minutes and there was no massive difference. For me, it’s just like a small injury comes in, then you have to take some time.”

On Tuesday, Afghanistan experienced their most important day in their cricket history so far. The team led by Rashid Khan defeated Bangladesh to knock out Australia and qualify for the first time ever in a T20 World Cup semi-final. However, there was one incident that seemed to mar the whole occasion for Afghanistan. It happened when Gulbadin Naib dramatically fell on his back, clutching his thigh after Trott signalled his players to slow things down.

But minutes later, not only was the all-rounder back on the field but he also went on to take Tanzim Hasan’s wicket, causing several former players and commentators to question the genuineness of his discomfort.

But Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan sought to play down the incident.

Skipper Rashid Khan believes that Afghanistan’s maiden T20 World Cup semifinal qualification, following spectacular wins over New Zealand and Australia along the way, is a momentous feat that will inspire the youth of the strife-torn nation.

Afghanistan, who became a full ICC member only in 2017, scripted history by qualifying for their maiden T20 World Cup semifinal with a win over Bangladesh here.

“I think the semi-final is going to be a massive, massive like inspiration for the youngsters back home in Afghanistan. That Afghanistan team get into the semis for the first time,” Rashid said at the post match press conference.

“And we have done it under 19 level, but this level we haven’t done that. Even Super Eight was first time for us and then in semis,” he added.

Moments after the win, visuals of jubilant fans back home celebrating Afghanistan’s historic achievement started doing the rounds on social media.

With the feat, Afghanistan have showed how much they have progressed in the white ball formats. At last year’s ODI World Cup, they upset defending champions England and former winners Sri Lanka and Pakistan. They are continuing their giant slaying run at the T20 World Cup having beaten heavyweights New Zealand and Australia.

“The cricket we have played in the whole tournament so far – I think we deserve to be in the semis. The way everyone took the responsibility of getting into the game and performing best for the team,” said Rashid.

“So, I don’t know how I can describe my feeling but it’s a massive achievement for us as a team and as a nation to be in the semis and now looking forward to the semis.” The Afghanistan cricket team is a group of individuals who have honed their skills by plying their trade in T20 leagues around the world. But when they come together to play for their country, it’s hard to find a more passionate bunch.

The Afghanistan cricket team booked their progression into the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024, beating Bangladesh in their final Super 8 match of the tournament. Though it was a deserving win for Afghanistan, there were many head-scratching incidents from the game that left the world of social media baffled. The biggest incident that made headlines was Afghanistan star Gulbadin Naib‘s shock injury claim that seemed to have come on the instructions of coach Jonathan Trott. Seeing the act getting caught on camera, even ‘cheating accusations’ were made against Naib, Trott and Afghanistan.

Gulbadin Naib seemed to have ‘faked’ his injury as he fell down while fielding in slips while holding his hamstring. The incident even forced the medical team to rush in and carry him out of the ground. Not just the Bangladesh team but Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan seemed frustrated by the act. Here’s the video:

Seeing the incident, the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Michael Vaughan, etc. took to social media to crack jokes.

Afghanistan made the entire cricket world stand up and take notice a they shrugged off the ‘minnows’ tag, and confirmed their status among the elite teams in the sport.

Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan admitted after the game that it was a dream coming true moment for him and the team.

“It’s something like a dream for us as a team being in the semifinal. It’s all about the way we have started the tournament. The belief came while we beat NZ. I don’t have any words to describe the feeling. The only guy who put us in the semifinal was Brian Lara and we proved it right. I told him we won’t let you down. We thought 130-135 was a good total on this wicket. We were 15-20 runs short. It was all about mindset. We knew they would come hard at us to chase that in 12 overs. That’s where we could take advantage, We just had to be clear with our plans. We put in the effort, that’s in our hands. Everyone did a wonderful job,” he said.

The Afghans next take on South Africa in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024.

Afghanistan pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the history of cricket, beating Australia by 21 runs in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup. This was their first win of over Australia in any format, having narrowly lost out to them in the ODI World Cup last year in India. The win also keeps Afghanistan afloat in the race to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament. Afghanistan have pulled off some huge results over the years, but after wins over New Zealand and Australia in the ongoing T20 World Cup, it is safe to say that they are knocking on the door to become a cricketing powerhouse.

Former India all-rounder Ajay Jadeja, who was the mentor of the team during the ODI World Cup last year, had claimed that Afghanistan will become a big team the moment they beat a top cricketing nation.

A video of the same has resurfaced after Afghanistan’s famous win over Australia.

“Some of the participating teams have been playing cricket for over 100 years. But, Afghanistan is a young cricketing nation with around 15-20 years of experience. So, all this is part of the journey. During the 2019 World Cup, both India and Pakistan survived an upset against Afghanistan by the barest of margins. You are saying today that they (Afghanistan) are a small team. But, the day they beat a big team, they will also become a big team,” Jadeja had said during the ODI World Cup last year in India.

After the match, even Australia captain Mitchell Marsh admitted Afghanistan “outplayed us” on a night when his side dropped five catches.

“They’re a very good cricket team who play against the best all the time and they have improved a hell of a lot over the last few years,” said Marsh.

“We know certainly in these conditions that they are a big danger team. Like I said before, they outplayed us tonight and credit to them.”

With one match to play in the Super Eights, Afghanistan and Australia have two points each while India top the group with four.

Afghanistan will face winless Bangladesh in their final game in the Super Eights in Kingstown, St Vincent while Australia, who currently occupy second spot in the group on the basis of run rate, will likely need to beat India in St Lucia to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Afghanistan’s seminal performance in the ongoing World Cup that helped them toss away the ‘minnows’ tag has a lot to do with the appointment of Ajay Jadeja as their mentor, reckons head coach Jonathan Trott.

The Afghans have toppled defending champions England, former champions Pakistan and Bangladesh to garner six points in the tournament so far.

It is a position from which they can dream of a place in the World Cup semifinals and a Champions Trophy berth in 2025.

Trott lavished praise on Jadeja for keeping the team in high spirits.

“I think Ajay brings a lot of experience having played a lot of cricket in India. He’s always a good sounding board with regards to conditions, venues and also the other subcontinent teams that we’ve played against,” Trott said in the pre-match press meet here on November 2.

The former England batsman said having Jadeja on the board during a high-pressure event made his job a bit easier.

“As for myself as a coach…as a good sounding board with decision making and sort of planning going forward for each game.

“It (Jadeja’s presence) is also another good set of eyes on the players to see how they’re preparing for the matches and how their careers and talent is being utilised,” added Trott.

Afghanistan might view Lucknow, the venue of their next match against Netherlands, as their ‘home ground’ after having been based here some years back.

But Trott dismissed the theory of ‘home advantage’ because of the team’s prior experience at the venue.

Trott said the pitch has been re-laid at the Ekana stadium and that should nullify such reasons.

“I think when it comes to home ground advantage, I think they (Afghanistan) have good experience of playing here. But in World Cup matches, they’ve relaid the pitch. So, it’s a little bit different to how it has been in the past. I don’t think (previous) experience plays that bigger role,” said Trott.

However, Trott said the experience of playing against bigger teams will stand them in good stead.

“But we’ve won against big sides. the big Test playing nations. So, that’s good. I think tomorrow’s challenge is going to be playing against a very good Dutch side who are in form and that’s going to be the challenge for us, so very excited for it.”

The calm and collective batting effort of the Afghanistan team has found its own set of admirers in the ongoing World Cup and head coach Jonathan Trott has set the next target for his players — someone needs to bat deep and score a hundred in remaining three games. Enjoying their best ever performance, Afghanistan have been on a giant killing run in the ongoing 50-over showpiece with comprehensive wins over defending champions England, rivals Pakistan and 1996 winners Sri Lanka, proving that they can no longer be termed as minnows.

“Nobody has got a hundred so far yet, so that’s the next challenge. Someone accepts responsibility and batting for a longer period of time and make sure we get a hundred,” Trott said at the press conference after Afghanistan’s seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Monday.

The likes of opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah have come close but haven’t been able to reach the magical three figure mark in the ongoing event.

“You see, a lot of hundreds are scored in the tournament. That’s the next frontier, the next barrier. Gurbaz has scored a few hundreds recently, you know Ibrahim has.

“The middle order is in form, 3-4-5-6, as well. That’s the next challenge and I have got no doubt that the players will be able to (get hundred) in the future. Hopefully, it starts with the next game,” Trott added.

Armed with a potent bowling attack, Afghanistan initially felt more comfortable defending totals but their batters have shown maturity as they have taken the side to back-to-back victories, chasing totals.

“I think we’ve been working really hard at our batting and doing the basics. I know it’s very cliche, but the way that we train, the way we think about our cricket, certainly with batting, the way that we accept responsibility at times as well, I think you’re starting to see hopefully not the penny drop, but we’re starting to see also the confidence in the players, in their own ability,” Trott said.

The win against Sri Lanka has elevated Afghanistan to the fifth spot. They are playing Netherlands, Australia and South Africa in the remaining league games.

“I think the players and I hope that they realise the strides they’ve made in these matches but also there’s still extra room to be done with bat, ball, and in the field.

“So, there’s still three games to go. But we’ll certainly enjoy tonight’s victory against a very good Sri Lankan side, who recently won the T20 Asia Cup (2022). They were in the final of the ODI Asia Cup (in September). So really happy,” Trott said.

Afghanistan may have defeated three former World Cup champions so far in the tournament. It may have had its best World Cup outing already. While taking pride in his unit’s achievement, head coach Jonathan Trott has already set an in-form batting group its next target, of scoring a hundred.

“Nobody has got a hundred so far yet, so that’s the next challenge. Someone accepts responsibility and batting for a longer period of time and make sure we get a hundred,” Trott said after Afghanistan thumped Sri Lanka by seven wickets on Monday.

“You see, a lot of hundreds are scored in the tournament. That’s the next frontier, the next barrier. Gurbaz has scored a few hundreds recently, you know Ibrahim has. The middle order is in form, 3-4-5-6, as well. That’s the next challenge and I have got no doubt that the players will be able to in the future. Hopefully it starts with the next game.”

For the second time in succession, Afghanistan’s batters timed the chase to perfection. Trott revealed that breaking down the target on a whiteboard in the dug-out is being employed to ease out the pressure of a chase.

There is a bit more focus with regards to breaking it down into smaller targets, for sometimes you know sitting out in Pakistan getting chasing 280 and starting on nought, it’s a long way,” Trott said.

“If you break it down, that seems a lot more manageable, so those sort of little things, motivating the players and keeping them in touch with where we want to be. And that’s also a feel-good fact, if you know you are on the right track, it’s also a nice feeling as well.”

Afghanistan’s sumptuous Cricket World Cup 2023 triumph against Pakistan on Monday went down in history as one of the team’s finest in the sport. Having not beaten Pakistan in 7 ODIs before, the Afghans outplayed Babar Azam‘s men in Chennai to send shockwaves around the cricketing spectrum. As the entire team celebrated this monumental victory, head coach Jonathan Trott gave a rousing dressing room speech, lauding his players for what they managed to pull off on the field.

“There’s a lot of emotions, a lot of passion. That’s great. Let’s just make sure we enjoy tonight. Make sure we look after each other. Let’s make sure we enjoy this. Let’s take the confidence from this. Enjoy tonight. I think Nabi. 10 of us for 31. Well, done. Noor, first World Cup game three wickets, well done,” Jonathan Trott said in a video shared on Instagram.

For Afghanistan, Noor Ahmed spun web around Pakistan batters, bagging 3 wickets in his maiden World Cup game. With the bat, it was Ibrahim Zadran who top-scored with a knock of 87 runs off 113 balls. Ramat Shah (77), Rahmataullah Gurbaz (65) and Hashmatullah Shahidi (48) also played important roles in the chase of 284 runs.

“Our batters, I thought the way that we started, Ibrahim and Gurbaz I thought that was outstanding. That’s world-class batting. You guys played cricket shots. That’s what we’ve got. We’ve got a lot of talent. If we just apply ourselves in the way that Rahmat and the skipper played.

“Yeah. there are things to work on. And if we can get those sorts of little things right, that will help us win games like this more often and more consistently. But let’s make sure we take this confidence and this belief in this change room now and the happiness and we apply to every time we train and every match we play from here on it. Very excited for you boys. I’m very happy, very excited. Very proud,” Trott further said in the video.

After a few close encounters between the two sides in recent times, Afghanistan finally got one over Pakistan for the first time in one-day internationals, and the team’s coach, Jonathan Trott, was all praise for the way his side dominated the game on October 23.

“Well, yeah, it doesn’t take a lot to see the passion and the rivalry between them. You know, (in) Asia Cup, we had a very disappointing loss last year. And then we had a series against them a couple of months ago, a three-match ODI series, in which a few times we were in the game, and I am just glad today we were in the game again and managed to get across the line,” said Trott on the significance of Afghanistan’s historic victory over Pakistan.

The former English batter also felt the win would give the team’s batters a sense of self-confidence that they could do this consistently and inspire the next set of cricketers back home.

“Very happy for a few of the batsmen who have, hopefully, will now have that self-belief that we can go on and trust their games and be very confident for the games coming forward. I think for the country, it just shows the amount of talent, and as it was when we were fortunate enough to beat England, it inspires another generation of players to pick up a cricket bat or ball and work on their fielding and fitness,” he added.

Crediting the performance of the openers in setting up the victory, Trott said, “The turning point for me was the start that Ibrahim and Gurbaz gave us – I think it is always good when you’re chasing a total like that. You need a good start, and there is less pressure on the players coming in. So those two batsmen, I think (were) outstanding. I’m very happy for Ibrahim getting into the tournament now and showing everybody on the world stage what a good player he is.”

The Afghan coach also praised Rahmat Shah’s unbeaten knock of 77 and how he anchored the chase. “I thought the players in the middle, their emotions were outstanding. I think to have a historic win like this as well for the players, you could easily get ahead of yourself or get a bit nervous or panicky. I thought the way that Rahmat Shah played, there are still a few things, a few singles he could have maybe taken to take the pressure off himself, but the shot that he played there to hit a straight six sort of broke the back of the game and the way that the captain played as well, you know, took the pressure off the changing room,” the 42-year-old explained.

Meanwhile, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam felt his team’s bowlers and fielders did not put their best foot forward, resulting in the former champions’ third-straight defeat of the tournament.

“This loss was very hard as a team. I think we were not up to the mark in bowling and fielding. In the middle overs, the spinners didn’t bowl as they should have and didn’t put pressure on them,” said Azam.

“In fielding, you must put in extra effort and be fit. You should focus on the ball, not on other thoughts, and when the ball comes, you have to be proactive as a fielder, so I think we are lagging a little bit as a fielding unit,” added the Pakistani skipper.

Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott hopes Sunday’s World Cup win over England will “encourage boys and girls” to take up cricket even though the country’s Taliban rulers ban women from playing sport. The 69-run victory will be regarded as one of the biggest shocks in the history of the tournament as Afghanistan ended a 14-match World Cup losing streak. “It’s not just cricket that the guys are playing for,” said Trott, who recognised the significance of a win for a nation reeling from recent earthquakes and the Taliban’s fractious international relations.

“The guys are very knowledgeable of the things and the hardship that some people are going through because of the natural disaster and for various other reasons.

“And so, if this can give a smile to people’s faces but also encourage boys and girls to pick up a cricket bat or a cricket ball and get playing cricket wherever they are in Afghanistan, then that’s the sort of the goal that’s been achieved.”

Before Sunday, Afghanistan had only won one match at the World Cup when they defeated Scotland on their 2015 debut.

They lost all nine matches they played at the 2019 tournament in England, including a 150-run rout at the hands of the hosts.

But having scored 284 on Sunday thanks to dashing opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz‘s blistering 80 and Ikram Alikhil‘s 58, Afghanistan’s bowlers set to work.

Only Harry Brook with 66 showed any real defiance while spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan claimed three wickets each as England were dismissed for 215.

– ‘Knock-on effect’ –

The result left both sides with a win and two losses each after three games of the 10-nation tournament.

“This win is significant, certainly in the manner and by the margin as well,” added Trott.

“There’s a lot of confidence that will hopefully come from this, it’ll have a knock-on effect to all the other games, but not only in this World Cup, but for the future as well.”

Trott knows all about World Cup shocks. In 2011, he was part of the England team humbled by Ireland in Bengaluru despite him scoring 92.

“That’s the beauty of the World Cup, isn’t it? That’s what cricket’s about, it pushes and pulls you so much emotionally as a player and as a coach.

“But we can compete with anybody in the world.”

Next up for Afghanistan are New Zealand who have three wins from three games including seeing off England in the tournament opener.

New Zealand, runners-up at the last two World Cups, will be favourites.

Trott, however, believes that his players’ exposure to the international game through Twenty20 franchise cricket has only served to bolster Afghanistan self-belief.

“I think the fact that a lot of our players have played with the English players in franchise cricket, they get to know the ins and outs of each player so there’s that familiarity and also the confidence,” he explained.

“Sometimes I think when you see big Test playing nations you sort of hold them in high regard. I think playing with players like that you see that they are human and you are just as entitled to win.”
