It has been a disastrous Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign for defending champions England who have won just one out of their six matches in the tournament till now. With just two points, the Jos Buttler-led side is at the bottom of the table as their latest defeat came against India on Sunday. The bowlers were able to restrict India to 229 but a uninspiring batting display saw them getting all out for 129. Former India batter Gautam Gambhir pointed out that veteran cricketer Joe Root has failed to perform in the competition and his form has been the most “damaging thing” for the English batting line-up.

“If you see England’s batting lineup, apart from Joe Root, all the other guys want to play aggressive cricket. It is the form of Joe Root that has been the most damaging thing for this batting lineup because this entire batting lineup revolves around him,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Root has scored just 175 runs in six matches and he was dismissed for a duck against India. Gambhir said that he was the anchor in the batting line-up and his lack of runs has left the others ‘exposed’.

“He was that anchor and glue who could bat from one end and the rest of the guys could actually play the way they wanted to. The moment Root hasn’t delivered, everyone gets exposed. Not a lot of guys have that ability to absorb the pressure of playing against the seaming and swinging balls,” he explained.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the top 7 teams in the Cricket World Cup along with hosts Pakistan will be eligible for Champions Trophy 2025 and as a result, England are currently in danger of missing out on qualification.

Indian cricket team fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets in two balls to leave England reeling during their Cricket World Cup 2023 match in Lucknow on Sunday. Bumrah struck on the fifth ball of the fifth over as Dawid Malan ended up chopping a delivery directly on to his stumps. It was a big wicket for India who were not able to post a big total and the passion was clear from Bumrah’s expressions. The fast bowler struck once again on the very next delivery as Joe Root was trapped LBW on a in-swinging ball that left the experienced batter completely perplexed.

England bowlers led by David Willey kept India down to 229-9 despite skipper Rohit Sharma’s 87.

Willey, a left-arm quick, returned figures of 3-45, including the prized wicket of Virat Kohli for a nine-ball duck, after England elected to bowl at Lucknow in search of a victory to cling on to their slim hopes of making the semi-finals.

Fast bowler Chris Woakes and leg-spinner Adil Rashid picked up two wickets each and a spirited performance by the fielders, who threw themselves around to stop runs, made England look a like a different side.

The 2019 champions sit bottom of the 10-team table with four defeats from five matches.

“I missed my lengths early in the tournament, and I’m my own biggest critic,” Woakes said in the innings break.

“Fielding set the tone for us. It took a bit of spin, and it’s a bit two-paced, but hopefully under lights it’ll slide on. But we’d have taken that at the start. Hopefully we can bat well and chase it down.”

Suryakumar Yadav made a fighting 49 before becoming Willey’s third wicket but the tail played out the full 50 overs.

The unbeaten hosts lost three early wickets to slip to 40-3 before Rohit steadied the innings and attempted to hit back in a 91-run stand with KL Rahul, who made 39.

Rohit survived a reprieve on 33 when he was given out lbw off Mark Wood but the opener reviewed the decision in his favour with tracking showing the ball would have missed the leg stump.

Rohit reached his second fifty of the tournament — he also hit a century against Afghanistan — to the noisy delight of the nearly-packed 50,000-seater stadium.

Rohit and Rahul, who was returning to his IPL home ground where he suffered a serious injury earlier this year, kept the score ticking before Willey broke the stand with Rahul’s wicket.

Rohit kept up the fight but fell to Adil Rashid’s leg spin after he holed out to deep mid-wicket where Liam Livingstone took a low catch.

The fielder, however, injured his knee after his leg jarred in the surface. Livingstone got back on his feet after getting medical attention.

Kohli, who endured his 16th duck in ODIs, remains one century away from equalling all-time great Sachin Tendulkar‘s record of 49 hundreds in the 50-over format.

Former captain Kohli has been in good form at this World Cup, scoring 354 runs in six matches.

Woakes struck first as he bowled opener Shubman Gill for nine in the fourth over and soon grabbed one more to send Shreyas Iyer back to the pavilion for four.

India’s ‘Chase Master’ Virat Kohli revealed “reverse slap” as the shot that he would like to borrow from England’s consistent batter Joe Root. England have, so far, failed to live up to their pre-tournament billing in the ongoing World Cup, as they sit at the bottom of the table with just two points. However, they will back themselves to pull off a victory against the hosts as the defending champions hold a 4-3 lead over the Men in Blue in head-to-head encounters in ODI World Cups.

However, if current form is anything to go by, India does appear to be the favourites in Sunday’s clash.

Lavishing praise on Root, Kohli told Star Sports, “Joe, he is great all-round the way he plays reverse slap I would like to take that shot.”

Root has played this shot numerous times against spinners as well as pacers to find boundaries and put pressure on the bowlers. There aren’t many batters who can execute this specific shot the way Root does especially in the red-ball format.

Ahead of the clash, Virat was also seen bowling in the nets with the bowlers. Along with the players who form India’s usual bowling set-up which includes Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, the likes of Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav and Virat also bowled a few deliveries as well.

India currently sits in second place in the tournament’s standings with 10 points and has a net run rate of 1.353. South Africa leapfrogged after they defeated Pakistan in a nail-biting one-wicket victory.

India: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav.

England: Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Brydon Carse, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.

England batter Joe Root named India’s stalwart batter Virat Kohli as the “greatest chaser of all time” ahead of their upcoming clash in the World Cup on Sunday at Lucknow’s Ekana stadium. England have failed to live up to their pre-tournament billing in the ongoing World Cup as they currently sit at the bottom of the table with two points. However, with their backs against the wall and faced with a do-or-die battle, the Three Lions will go all out to pull off a victory against the hosts. The defending champions hold a 4-3 lead over the Men in Blue in head-to-head encounters in ODI World Cups.

However, on current form, India appear to hold the upper hand going into Sunday’s clash.

Virat has been influential in India’s unbeaten run in the World Cup so far, playing match-winning hands in all the team’s chases. The former all-format captain steadied the ship when India found themselves in a sticky situation against Australia and New Zealand.

Hailing Virat, Root told Star Sports, “Virat is probably the greatest chaser of all time his record is incredible.”

Virat’s performance with the bat could be a major factor in determining the outcome of the game. There are some quality bowlers in England’s star-studded department who could pose some questions to the experienced batter. But for Virat, pacer Mark Wood and spinner Adil Rashid will be the two bowlers he would like to face on the field.

“Mark Wood I have played against him a few times he is a great bowler he has the skill set to trouble batsmen I would like to test myself against real pace,” Virat said.

“Adil Rashid, he is a very underrated bowler and he has been doing well for England a very challenging bowler I look forward to play against,” Virat added.

India: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav.

England: Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Brydon Carse, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.

Two-time ODI World Cup winners India take on England, the reigning champions, in the 29th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on October 29 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Led by Rohit Sharma, India have won all their five matches in the tournament so far. The Indian team beat New Zealand by four wickets in their latest encounter in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Virat Kohli’s 95 and Mohammed Shami’s 5/54 headlined the team’s commanding performance against 2019 World Cup runners-up New Zealand. India, earlier in the tournament, defeated Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Australia – all in run chases. England, on the other hand, have had a poor start to their title defence with four defeats in five matches. Their only win was a 137-run success against Bangladesh while they have lost to New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

The English side, however, has the upper hand against India in ICC Cricket World Cup history. England have won four and tied one of the eight matches in this fixture. India, though, lead 57-44 in overall ODI wins in this fixture.

Here are the key player battles to watch out for in the India vs England ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match:

Rohit Sharma vs Mark Wood

Rohit Sharma is India’s second-highest run-getter in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with 311 runs in five matches. He boasts a strike-rate of 133.47 in the tournament, smashing 33 fours and 17 sixes so far, while averaging 62.20. Rohit will be key in neutralizing the new ball threat of England’s firey pacer Mark Wood.

Rohit has scored 73 runs in 86 balls against Mark Wood in ODI cricket, hitting 12 fours and a six. Wood, meanwhile, has dismissed the Indian captain only once.

Virat Kohli vs Adil Rashid

India’s leading run-scorer in this tournament is Virat Kohli with 354 runs in five matches. He slammed a century against Bangladesh while scoring fifties against Australia, Afghanistan and New Zealand.

Adil Rashid, on the other hand, is England’s second-highest wicket-taker this edition with six wickets. In spin-friendly conditions at Lucknow, Rashid will be a handful for the Indian batters in the middle overs.

Virat Kohli and Adil Rashid have squared off in eight ODI innings. Kohli has scored 108 runs at a strike-rate of 93.10, including seven fours and a six. Rashid, meanwhile, has dismissed Kohli thrice with an average of 36.00.

KL Rahul vs Moeen Ali

Another key matchup in the middle overs of the Indian innings would be KL Rahul against Moeen Ali.

KL Rahul has been impressive throughout the World Cup 2023, scoring 177 runs in four innings, remaining unbeaten thrice, headlined by the match-winning 97 against Australia. He has notched 708 runs in 18 ODIs in 2023, smashing five half-centuries and one ton. The BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow is also where KL Rahul plays franchise T20 cricket, wherein he averages 46.25 with the bat.

Moeen Ali hasn’t enjoyed a successful campaign this edition. However, he has picked up nine wickets and bowled at an economy rate of 5.13 against India in this format.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul has scored 32 runs in 46 balls against Moeen Ali in ODI cricket. Although the Indian batter hasn’t been free-scoring against the English off-spinner, Moeen is yet to dismiss Rahul in this format.

Jonny Bairstow vs Jasprit Bumrah

England opener Jonny Bairstow will be responsible for providing his team a flying start against unbeaten India in the ICC World Cup 2023 encounter. Bairstow has amassed 127 runs in five matches at a strike-rate of 90.07 so far in this tournament.

Bairstow will go up against India’s Jasprit Bumrah early on in the innings. Bumrah, meanwhile, is India’s leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 11 dismissals. He has also maintained a commendable economy rate of 3.80, despite bowling in the first powerplay and death overs.

Jasprit Bumrah has dismissed Jonny Bairstow once in 44 balls in ODI cricket. Bairstow, on the other hand, has accumulated only 22 runs at a strike-rate of 50.00 in this head-to-head, 12 of which are in boundaries. Bumrah has bowled 33 dot balls against Bairstow in this format, gaining the upper hand ahead of the clash in Lucknow.

Joe Root vs Ravichandran Ashwin

England’s batters, barring the win against Bangladesh, have failed to notch big scores. On spin-friendly conditions in Lucknow, it will be another uphill battle for the Three Lions. Joe Root, one of England’s best batters against spin, will be key in this clash. He has averaged 35.00 in this World Cup, slamming two half-centuries – versus New Zealand and Bangladesh. Root has scored 739 runs in 21 ODIs against India, including three centuries.

India are expected to play Ravichandran Ashwin against England on Sunday. The off-spinner has scalped 35 wickets in 23 ODIs against the Three Lions at an average of 28.00, making him a fruitful option for Rohit Sharma and Co. at Lucknow.

Joe Root, however, has a slight upper hand against Ravichandran Ashwin in ODI cricket. Root has scored 97 runs in 134 balls, striking at 72.38, smashing six fours and a six. Ashwin, meanwhile, has dismissed him twice and bowled 69 dot balls. An average of 48.50, although, gives the Englishman an advantage.

How Can England Still Qualify For Semi-Finals” »

In the history of the ICC Cricket World Cup, we have rarely seen a defending champion capitulate as badly as England have so far in the 2023 edition. The 2019 champions are off to a disastrous start, losing four of their opening five matches in the tournament and their title defence mission seems to have reached an impasse way earlier than expected. Their only win in India in the ongoing tournament came against Bangladesh, where the quintessential English white-ball side of the last few years turned up.

In the other matches, however, they looked far from the team the world witnessed since the Eoin Morgan revolution began in 2015. They scraped through to a par total against New Zealand in the tournament opener before the Kiwi batters humbled the English bowlers in the run chase, while their star-studded batting line-up just fell apart against Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

With every team registering points in the tournament, the bottom half of the table is not a long distance away from sneaking into the top four. This may well work for the English team, who are currently closer to the exit doors than the knockout stages.

England find themselves in the ninth position after their defeat to Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. Their net run rate of -1.634 works against their favour, but we have seen some unlikely probabilities being materialised in sports, so this isn’t entirely out of the reckoning.

England will face table-toppers India next in Lucknow, followed by Australia, Netherlands and Pakistan. The fixtures could not have been more challenging, but that is the need of the hour for the Three Lions.

Can England make it to the ICC World Cup 2023 semi-finals? Here’s a look at all the scenarios that could unfold and where it would put the defending champions.

1.  England win the next four matches – 5 wins, 10 points

England’s best chance, as is for most teams in the bottom half, is to win all their remaining matches. However, England are likely to face stiff competition from teams like India, Australia and Pakistan. Even after winning all their remaining matches, the most definitive probability is that there will be two or more teams with as many points as England, bringing the battle down to net run rate.

The best comparison for this is the 1992 and 2019 editions, which were organised in the same format. In 1992, Pakistan (eventual champions) progressed to the semi-finals with four wins in nine matches (plus one extra point for a no-result). In 2019, New Zealand sneaked through on net run rate in the fourth position with five wins (plus one extra point for a no-result).

History says there is still scope for England if this scenario plays out, but this will also require them to pick up at least two massive victories to lift their catastrophic net run rate.

2. England win three of their four matches – 4 wins, 8 points

There is an outside chance for England to make it to the top four with only four points, like in the case of Pakistan. However, for that to happen, they will require the current top three to continue winning their matches, unless it is against England. Even among the other seven, they will require teams above them to constantly drop points. Such a scenario is a little unlikely, as more often than not, teams England want to lose, are facing each other, thus resulting in one of them getting points.

A defeat in any of their remaining games will virtually end their campaign unless we see the rarest cricketing probability work its magic in the wind and push England into the top four out of the blue.

3. England win two of their four matches – 3 wins, 6 points

England will be knocked out of the tournament.

4. England win one of their four matches – 2 wins, 4 points

England will be knocked out of the tournament.

5. England lose the next four matches – 1 win, two points

England will not only be eliminated but also pick up an unwanted record currently in Sri Lanka’s hold. Sri Lanka, who won the 1996 World Cup, won only two matches in the following edition in 1999, making it the worst performance by a defending champion in ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup history. England are on the verge of levelling or surpassing this record.
