The 12 franchises of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 11 broke the bank as they spent more than Rs 30 crore in buying 118 players sold over the two days of the Player Auction, which concluded in Mumbai on Friday. Eight players crossed the Rs 1 crore mark for the first time in PKL history while Sachin Tanwar (Tamil Thalaivas – INR 2.15 crore) emerged as the most expensive player. Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh (Haryana Steelers – INR 2.07) emerged as the most expensive foreign player while Sunil Kumar (U Mumba – INR 1.015 Crore) became the most expensive Indian defender ever. Ajith V. Kumar became the most expensive player in Category C in this year’s Player Auction after he was acquired by Puneri Paltan for INR 66 lakh, meanwhile, Jai Bhagwan was bought by Bengaluru Bulls for INR 63 Lakh.

Arjun Rathi emerged as the most expensive player in Category D after he was acquired by Bengal Warriors for INR 41 Lakh. Furthermore, Mohd. Amaan found a place in the Puneri Paltan team for INR 16.2 lakh and Stuwart Singh was bought for INR 14.2 lakh by U Mumba.

Speaking on Friday, Anupam Goswami, Head Sports Leagues, Mashal Sports and League Commissioner, Pro Kabaddi League, said, “I would like to thank all the PKL stakeholders for yet another exceptional PKL Player Auction. After witnessing a record eight players cross the 1 crore mark on Day 1, it was remarkable to see Category C players such as Ajith V. Kumar and Jai Bhagwan attract strong bidding of over 60 Lakh on Day 2. I am extremely happy to see that all franchises have built well-balanced squads, which promises a highly competitive PKL Season 11.”

Star raider of the Player Auction Sachin spoke about being sold to Tamil Thalaivas for INR 2.15 Cr – the highest bid in this year’s Player Auction. “I didn’t expect my bid to be so high. It feels really good to join the Tamil Thalaivas. This is certainly a life-changing moment for me. The team has put faith in my abilities and I’ll certainly give my best in the upcoming season.”

Pawan Sehrawat, who returned to Telugu Titans for INR 1.725 crore, said, “I knew that the Telugu Titans would utilize the FBM card for me. I couldn’t carry out the job that I was bought for in the last season, but I’ve received another chance to complete my unfinished business with the franchise. I have worked with Telugu Titans’ new Head Coach Krishna Kumar Hooda before and I had a great experience playing under him. He’s an experienced coach and he knows how to make his raiders perform.”

From time immemorial, kabaddi has been one of the most followed and loved sports in the Indian sporting ecosystem. As the nation celebrates its Independence Day, Kabaddi, the sport that is so deeply rooted in India’s culture, took centre stage when Pro Kabaddi League stars Pardeep Narwal and Maninder Singh visited the Mumbai Public School, a government school supported by Disney Star in collaboration with Yuva Unstoppable, for the special flag hoisting ceremony. After the ceremony, Pardeep and Maninder, who are among the most loved kabaddi players in the country, had a fun kabaddi session with the school’s kabaddi team. After what was a very enjoyable kabaddi session, the two legends of the sport, on behalf of the Pro Kabaddi League presented the Mumbai Public School with gifts and a token of appreciation. The morning was rounded off with cultural programme organised by the school.

On the occasion, Pardeep Narwal said, “Kabaddi is a very important part of India’s culture, and it has been played from before independence as well. I am very happy to see that so many kids are still very interested in the sport. Today has been a heart-warming moment for us, here with the students at the special flag hoisting ceremony. I would also like to wish everyone a Happy Independence Day!”

Maninder Singh said, “Every corner in our country has kids playing kabaddi and we hope to see this continue for years to come. Kabaddi is in everyone’s blood and the love people show for the sport, keeps us motivated. I want to thank every Indian for doing their bit to support Kabaddi, and I hope they continue to do so. And we would also like to thank the PKL as they have helped make the sport better from all aspects. Happy Independence Day, India!”

Over the past four years, Disney Star, in collaboration with Yuva Unstoppable, has been transforming government schools across India, positively impacting thousands of students through their CSR project, The School Transformation Program. This unique initiative is designed to reduce dropout rates and promote education through a range of interventions, including WASH support, STEM labs, digital classrooms, sports facilities, libraries, new classrooms, and solar electrification. The program has a holistic focus on creating technologically advanced and environmentally conscious schools, paving the way for a brighter future. It has steadily expanded, reaching schools in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Gurgaon, Bengaluru, Kochi, Keezhillam, Kothamangalam, Kolkata, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, Chennai, and beyond.

As the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) approaches its 10th anniversary on July 26, Mashal Sports announced the PKL Season 11 Player Auction, which is scheduled for August 15 and 16 in Mumbai. The league’s journey began a decade ago with a nail-biting match between U Mumba and the Jaipur Pink Panthers in Mumbai. After successfully concluding the tenth season of the Pro Kabaddi League from December 2, 2023 to March 1, 2024, the league has become the second sporting league in India to complete 10 seasons, as per a PKL release.

According to a release, Mashal Sports revealed a new logo ahead of Pro Kabaddi League Season 11. The logo showcases the colours of saffron and green similar to the Indian tri-colour, portraying the game of kabaddi as the country’s proud sport.

Anupam Goswami, League Commissioner, Pro Kabaddi League, said they are delighted to announce that the player auction for Pro Kabaddi Season XI is being held on August 15 this year.

“Kabaddi, which has been India’s unique and popular sport for several millennia, is strongly showcased as a world-class competitive discipline at Pro Kabaddi. This is a great achievement for all the stakeholders of Pro Kabaddi as well as the Kabaddi ecosystem of the country under the custodianship of AKFI. We will strongly celebrate this achievement with patriotic fervour at the Season XI Player Auction.”

Iran’s Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh emerged as the costliest player in history of Pro Kabaddi League auction after he was bought for Rs 2.35 crore by Puneri Paltan, while India’s Maninder Singh was roped in by Bengal Warriors for Rs 2.12 crore, in Mumbai on Monday. The two-day auction began on Monday with 12 teams bidding for players, both Indian and overseas, from categories A and B. The auctions for categories C and D will take place on Tuesday.

A total of 137 matches will be played in the 10th edition of PKL. As many as 132 league stage matches will be followed by the playoff comprising five matches — two eliminators, two semifinals and the final.

The base price in category A was Rs 30 lakh, category B was Rs 20 lakh whereas in categories C and D, the base prices were placed at Rs 13 lakh and Rs 9 lakh respectively.

For Iran captain Shadloui (all-rounder), whose latest appearance was in the Asian Games final against gold medal winners India, there was intense bidding right at the start which also reset the record of costliest player — for both Indian and overseas.

U Mumba and Gujarat Giants began the bidding and were soon joined by Puneri Paltan and Telugu Titans. The Iranian was eventually picked up by Puneri Paltan for Rs 2.35 crore as Patna Pirates, his former team, did not exercise their right of Final Bid Match (FBM).

“We needed someone on the left. We came with the mindset of picking him up at the auctions,” Puneri Paltan coach BC Ramesh told the media.

Gujarat Giants bagged Fazal Atrachali for Rs 1.60 crore, with the star Iranian player also attracting the biggest bid for a defender in the tournament auction’s history.

India’s all-rounder Rohit Gulia went to Gujarat Giants for Rs 58.50 lakh with Patna Pirates once again opting against using their FBM.

All-rounder Vijay Malik saw bids being made by Bengal Warriors and UP Yoddhas, who were joined by Telugu Titans and U Mumba. He was acquired by UP Yoddhas for Rs 85 lakhs with his former team Dabang Delhi KC deciding against using FBM.

Indian raider Maninder, who has played for Jaipur Pink Panthers and Bengal Warriors, attracted heavy bidding in category A. He was roped in by Telugu Titans for Rs 2.12 crore but eventually went to Bengal Warriors, who used their FBM to retain the player.

Manjeet attracted bids from Tamil Thalaivas and Patna Pirates, who took him for Rs 92 lakh with Haryana Steelers not using FBM.

In category B, Mohammad Nabibakhsh and Arkam Shaikh were snapped up by Gujarat Giants for Rs 22 lakh and Rs 20.25 lakh respectively. Shaikh was retained by using FBM.

Nitin Rawal (Rs 30 lakh) went to Bengal Warriors, who used their second FBM to rope in Shubham Shinde (Rs 32.25 lakh). U Mumba added Girish Ernak (Rs 20 lakh) and Mahender Singh (Rs 40.25 lakh) while Bengaluru Bulls took Vishal (Rs 20 lakh). Sombir went to Gujarat Giants for Rs 26.25 lakh.

There were no bidders for Sandeep Narwal, Deepak Niwas Hooda, Ashish, Manoj Gowda, Sachin Narwal, Gurdeep, Ajinkya Kapre and Vishal Bhardwaj.

The Indian women’s kabaddi team players struggled to hold back their tears after beating Chinese Taipei in the final of the Asian Games. In what was a nail-biting encounter, India edged their opponents 26-25 to claim the gold medal, which was also India’s 100th at the Hangzhou Games. After the referee blew the full-time whistle, the Indian players broke down as tears of joy flowed down their cheeks. Players hugged each other and celebrated the historic moment for the country.

This was India’s third gold in women’s kabaddi which was introduced in the 2010 Asian Games. India won gold in the 2010 and 2014 editions but settled for a silver in 2018 after losing to Iran in the final.

This time the Indians faced Chinese Taipei, an emerging kabaddi nation, in what turned out to be an edge-of-the-seat summit showdown.

The two sides were tied 34-34 in the group league match and both knew that it was going to be a tough final.

India were well ahead at 14-9 at the half time, courtesy of a super raid from Pooja, who was one of the stars of the intense final that also saw the team’s coach being cautioned with a green card.

The next 15 minutes saw a nerve-wracking display of tremendous game from both sides with the lead getting exchanged quite a few times.

Chinese Taipei narrowed down India’s lead to 16-14 soon after resumption. With less than five minutes remaining on the clock, Chinese Taipei won a crucial video referral as the scoreline read 19-17 in India’s favour.

From there, Chinese Taipei were on the ascendancy. There were just two Indian players on the field when a Chinese Taipei player made the raid. One Indian player was out as she touched the backline and the other failed to get hold of the opposition raider.

Chinese Taipei took four points — two from the raid and two for sending India All Out — and that took them ahead at 21-19.

Pooja then got one point from her raid to reduce the margin to 20-21. The next Chinese Taipei raider could not get any points and the onus was on India to make things even.

At this point, captain Ritu Negi took a masterstroke of a decision as she stopped Pushpa from going for a raid. She sent Pooja instead who did a marvellous job as India got two points to lead 22-21.

It was not over yet and the match got more intense as the two teams were locked 22-22, 23-23 and then 24-24.

At that stage, raider Pushpa won a point for India as 53 seconds were left on the clock. Chinese Taipei took a review but that was turned down, sealing the fate of the match in favour of India.

Chinese Taipei won a point through their raider to reduce the score to 25-26. The Indians played out the remaining few seconds before jumping into each other’s arms in celebration.

“We worked really hard after losing the gold in the 2018 Asian Games. We waited for five year but our hard work paid off,” said captain Ritu Negi who was also a part of the silver-winning team at the 2018 Asian Games.

India had lost to Iran in the final in Indonesia.

“Our players were a bit nervous towards the end but they kept themselves under control and ultimately pulled off the win,” coach Edachery Bhaskaran said.

“Chinese Taipei are now a very strong side. They have trained in India in the past and will keep on improving. We also have to work harder and maintain our hold.”
