ENG vs AUS 3rd T20I Highlights: Persistent rain meant the third Twenty20 international between England and Australia at Old Trafford on Sunday was abandoned without a ball being bowled as the series ended all square at 1-1. The match was due to get underway at 2:30 pm local time. However, with rain falling for several hours in Manchester on Sunday morning both the toss and match itself were put on hold, with deep puddles forming on the covers protecting the pitch and square. The official cut-off time for a five-overs per side match, the minimum length required to force a decisive result, was 5:46 pm. But a fresh downpour shortly before a planned pitch inspection led the umpires to abandon the match at 4:18 pm. (Scorecard)

Liam Livingstone said he is thriving on extra responsibility up the order after his 87 levelled England’s T20 international series with Australia at 1-1 on Friday with one match to play. Australia had posted a big total of 193/6 thanks to Jake Fraser-McGurk‘s first international 50 and contributions from captain Travis Head (31) and Josh Inglis (42). But Livingstone had a starring role with both bat and ball to set up a winner takes all clash for the series in Manchester on Sunday.

In his 50th T20 international, the spinner was the pick of the England bowlers with 2-16 despite only bowling three overs.

He then came to the crease with the hosts 34-2 inside four overs.

Stand-in captain Phil Salt‘s 39 off 23 deliveries helped his side rebuild but it was a blistering 90-run partnership off 47 balls between Livingstone and Jacob Bethell that swung the game England’s way.

“It is not easy coming in a five, six or seven. So moving up the order it gives me a bit more responsibility, time to bat, and I feel I am in decent nick at the moment with bat and ball,” said Livingstone, who has been hampered by injuries in recent years.

“Towards the end of the Hundred I felt I was getting my body back to normal, which is a thing that has bothered me the last couple of years.

“It has taught me a few life lessons but I am enjoying my cricket and playing with a smile on my face.”

Bethell departed for 44 on just his second international but Livingstone remained at the crease until the scores were tied.

Livingstone was denied hitting the winning runs when he was bowled by Matt Short, who took 5-22, but Adil Rashid‘s single saw England over the line with six balls to spare.

Earlier, England looked set for a chase in excess of 200 as the tourists made another rapid start with Head smashing his 31 off just 14 balls.

Australia were cruising along at 119-2 in the 13th over before Fraser-McGurk’s flashy innings came to an end when he was caught off the bowling of Livingstone.

Just like in the opening game of the series, which Australia won by 28 runs, it was left to the English spin attacking to limit the damage.

“Good score, felt like we were right in the hunt and we were close,” said Head, who was standing in for the ill Mitch Marsh as skipper

Former England captain Paul Collingwood believes the Jos Buttler-led side will play four spinners against India in the second semifinal of the T20 World Cup in Guyana on Thursday. The veteran cricketer said Adil Rashid is a “golden nugget” for England and will pose a challenge against Indian batters on a spin-friendly pitch at Providence Stadium amid the prediction of rain in the encounter. “He is a golden nugget for the England cricket team. He comes on naturally in the sixth over, I think the one thing about Rashid is, that his wrong’uns seem to be so difficult to pick. And he’s got real good deception. Now in T20 cricket, deception is key. Whether it’s slower balls or being able to turn the ball both ways. And he is looking really comfortable at the moment.”

“Indian batsmen generally play spin very well, but I think Adil Rashid, the way that he is bowling at the moment, we just have to wait and see what the conditions are like. There’s a chance that England could actually go with four spinners themselves,” Collingwood said during the Star Sports Press Room.

“Obviously, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone, who is actually an all-rounder who can bowl leg-spin and off-spin. And you never know, if the wickets are so dry, you can go with Will Jacks as well. So, plenty of options, but I think Adil Rashid is on top of his game, and this is the beauty of the World Cup. You’re gonna have a leg spinner now at the top of his game, confident, up against some of the best batters in the world. And that’s why it’s gonna be such a good spectacle, and we’re all down to see it,” he added.

On the other hand, former Australia spinner Brad Hogg said India would not bring Yuzvendra Chahal in the playing 11 and will stick to Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav in the spin department.

“It’s a day game, so the wicket might be a little bit dry. But this is the good thing about the Indian squad—they’ve got depth in spin. They knew that when they got to the West Indies, they were going to play more spin than pace. But they’ve still got Siraj there that they can bring in, and they’ve got Hardik Pandya, so they’ve got more pace options if they want up their sleeve. Will they bring in Chahal? I wouldn’t bring in Chahal right now. I’d stick with Jadeja. You’ve got to stick with the playing XI that you’re going with,” Hogg said.

He added that Kuldeep and Axar will be crucial against left-handers while Jadeja would be a better option than Chahal if it’s not turning.

“I love the thought of the question, though. Chahal against England would be okay. But there are a couple of left-handers in the batting lineup for England as well, which could do a little bit of damage. Kuldeep Yadav has been bowling exceptionally well, and Axar Patel has been going well. Jadeja hasn’t been that flash, but he gives you so much in the field, as well as with the bat. And he’s a player that, in the right conditions, he can also lift with the ball. If it’s not turning and if it suits pace, I reckon Jadeja is a better option than Chahal as well. So, I’d stick with Jadeja,” Hogg added.

Quinton de Kock made a coruscating fifty and bowlers responded bravely to the challenge of defending a sub-par total as South Africa thwarted a late England surge to eke out a tight seven-run win in their Group 2 Super Eight match in the T20 World Cup at Gros Islet, St Lucia on Friday. England had done well to keep South Africa to 163/6 in spite of De Kock’s 38-ball 65, but lost their way despite a spirited fightback from Harry Brook (53) and Liam Livingstone (33). They eventually finished at 156 for six.

South Africa’s perfection in executing their plans of taking the pace off the ball corresponded with England’s refusal to show intent as the defending champions did not find a single boundary between the fifth and the 12th over.

Brook and Livingstone did extremely well to stage a fightback to bring England back into the game but South Africa held their nerves, despite making plenty of errors, to keep their winning run in this World Cup intact.

England were still significantly far from target needing 46 runs to win from the final four overs but Ottneil Baartman, who had been measly throughout the group stage, sent down plenty of full-tosses as 21 runs were knocked off in the 17th over.

But Kagiso Rabada (2/32) stamped his class as he had Livingstone (33 off 17b, 3x4s, 2x6s) caught at deep backward square leg in the 18th over.

Marco Jansen then allowed only seven runs in the penultimate over to leave England needing 14 runs off the final over, in which Anrich Nortje (1/35) did well to remove Brooks and seal Proteas’ win.

Brook and Livingstone came together in the 11th over with England needing 103 to win from 58 balls. They added 78 from 42 but it was not enough as England paid a heavy price for being meek in the beginning.

Reeza Hendricks deserved all credits for pulling a catch out of thin air, putting a stunning effort at extra cover while diving to his left after Phil Salt (11) hit one hard against Rabada in the second over.

With Salt was dismissed early, England were neither quick off the blocks nor did they change approach to counter South African tactics.

Jonny Bairstow (17) failed to make the most of a lifeline given to him when Heinrich Klaasen dropped a regulation catch running in from backward square leg off Rabada in the third over.

However, with South African bowlers keeping it tight another chance came their way when Keshav Maharaj lured Bairstow to slash one wide of the off-stump and the batter obliged by hitting in the air. Nortje grabbed the chance.

The wily Maharaj then foxed England skipper Jos Buttler by taking the pace off a delivery which he hit straight to deep midwicket, where Klaasen did not make any mistake.

Moeen Ali (9) was bounced out by Baartman with Maharaj taking the catch as England skidded to 61 for four around the halfway mark.

Earlier, South Africa squandered a blistering start by Quinton de Kock (65) as England managed to keep the Proteas to a low total.

With De Kock (68, 4×4, 4×6) going hammer and tongs to take the scoring rate to nearly 10 an over for most of their first half, England fought back hard with regular wickets courtesy excellent fielding which remained the highlight of their effort.

Apart from De Kock’s fireworks, David Miller’s late resistance, 43 off 28 balls (4×4, 2×6), saved SA the blushes.

From 86 for no loss at one stage, South Africa had slipped to 113 for four by the 15th over, losing the momentum.

Amid the steady fall of wickets at one end, Miller held his ground and his late charge helped South Africa go past the 150-mark.

England vs Australia Live Updates, T20 World Cup Super Eight: Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow eye recovery for one-down England in the chase of 164 runs against South Africa in St Lucia. Earlier, Quinton de Kock made a forceful half-century but the Proteas were limited to 163 for six by England in their Group 2 Super Eight match. De Kock made 65 to lay a solid platform, while David Miller scored 43 to provide the South African innings the late impetus. Punjab Kings’ all-rounder Liam Livingstone on Monday returned to England from the ongoing IPL to undergo a knee recuperation ahead of the next month’s T20 World Cup. Along with Livingstone, Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals), Will Jacks and Reece Topley (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) also have left the IPL to join England squad ahead of the T20I series against Pakistan, beginning on May 22. The Kings are already eliminated from this IPL after managing just four wins from 12 matches and they are currently at the bottom of the table with eight points.

“IPL done for another year, had to get my knee sorted for the upcoming World Cup,” Livingstone wrote on his Instagram wall.

“Thanks once again to the Punjab Kings fans for all their love and support. Disappointing season as a team and personally, but as always, I loved every minute of playing in the IPL,” he added.

Hence, Livingstone will not be available for PBKS’ last two matches of the tournament against Rajasthan Royals (May 15) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (May 19).

The injury is not of serious nature but the England management, as per ESPNcricinfo, decided to give him more time to get it treated prior to their home T20I series against Pakistan.

After that series, the defending champions will travel to the West Indies for their T20 World Cup engagements, starting on June 4 against Scotland in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Livingstone had a lean IPL this season, scoring 111 runs from seven matches and took just three wickets.

Meanwhile, other England players in the IPL who are part of their World Cup squad – Moeen Ali (CSK), Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow (PBKS) and Phil Salt (KKR) – will be home-bound very soon.

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is halfway through and we have our favourites set. The league stage, which consists of 45 matches, has completed 24 matches as of October 25. While the World Cup has seen many sparkling performances, plenty of big names have been surprisingly poor. This has resulted in teams like England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka struggling to make their mark in the tournament. Here’s a look at the XI that has been well below expectations, thus not helping their side’s cause at all.

1. Temba Bavuma

South Africa’s Temba Bavuma has only played three of their five matches, missing out the other two games due to illness. Bavuma, however, has not been up to the mark and has not made it beyond the powerplay overs in any of the matches he has played. Bavuma has scored 59 runs in three matches and his strike-rate of 64.83 isn’t helping South Africa’s cause as well.

2. Jonny Bairstow

At the beginning of the tournament, fans would expect Jonny Bairstow to be one of the top five run-scorers, as the Englishman comes with such a reputation. However, he has been underwhelming so far in the tournament, scoring only 97 runs in four matches. Bairstow also has great experience of playing in Indian conditions and the numbers do not do justice to his ability.

3. Babar Azam

Pakistan’s World Cup campaign got off to a good start but totally lost track with three defeats on the trot. However, they are yet to get a meaningful contribution with the bat from their skipper Babar Azam. Currently ranked world No. 1 in ODIs, Babar Azam has scored 207 runs in six matches at an average of 34.50. This tally includes only one half-century and his struggles have reflected directly on the team’s performances.

4. Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler has been a key figure in England’s ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup triumphs, but in India, the skipper is struggling to make his mark. He has scored 87 runs in four matches, averaging 21.75. He got a few good starts but is yet to contribute with a trademark innings, which usually wins England matches by itself.

5. Najmul Hossain Shanto

Najmul Hossain Shanto is one of the more experienced players in Bangladesh, but the tournament so far has not been memorable for him. Shanto even captained the side in a couple of matches when Shakib Al Hasan missed out. However, in five matches, he has only scored 74 runs and comes in to bat at a crucial No. 3 or 4 position, which ultimately puts the side under pressure.

6. Liam Livingstone

England’s World Cup campaign has not been working wonders and it is largely because their star batters haven’t turned up. Liam Livingstone, who has good experience of playing in Indian conditions through IPL, has struggled to make his mark, scoring only 34 runs in three matches. He has picked up two wickets with the ball, but with him not firing with the bat, England have been falling short in the middle order.

7. Dhananjaya de Silva

Sri Lanka depend heavily on Dhananjaya de Silva as he is one of the few players who can contribute well with the bat and ball. Silva, however, is yet to pick up a wicket with the ball and has been expensive (economy – 6.73). With the bat, he hit 73 runs at a strike-rate of 74.48, which is far from the standard he operates in.

8. Shadab Khan

Pakistan’s star all-rounder Shadab Khan is struggling to make the most of the spinner-friendly conditions. He is yet to make a difference with the bat as well, forcing Babar Azam to drop him in the match against Australia. He scored 74 runs in four matches while picking up only two wickets at a bad average of 90.

9. Maheesh Theekshana

Maheesh Theekshana’s mystery spin was supposed to catch batters by surprise and give Sri Lanka the edge in the bowling attack. However, the off-spinner isn’t enjoying the best of tournaments, picking up only two wickets in four matches and averaging a poor 76 with the ball. With Sri Lanka being riddled with injuries, they desperately need him to return to form.

10. Mustafizur Rahman

Mustafizur Rahman is one of the best pacers on his day, but at the ICC World Cup 2023, he has been far from his best. The left-arm seamer picked up only two wickets in five matches and is averaging 119.50 with the ball. Mustafizur Rahman is the bowler captains go for at crucial times and with the pacer not being up to the mark, Bangladesh have struggled further.

11. Fazalhaq Farooqi

Afghanistan have had a terrific campaign so far, where they have already exceeded expectations. However, the side needs a lot more from their new ball bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi. Farooqi picked up two wickets in the tournament, which included a good new ball spell against England, but he has been far too inconsistent. Farooqi averages 79 in the tournament and his economy too is above six, which isn’t a good sign for Afghanistan.
