Following Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain’s victory over Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad, her father, Tiken Borgohain, expressed confidence in his daughter’s performance in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. Lovlina defeated Hofstad 5-0 in the women’s 75 kg round of 16 bouts on Wednesday. Borgohain, a bronze medalist in the 69 kg category at Tokyo 2020, is seeded eighth in her first 75 kg Olympic tournament. “It was a good fight. She won her first bout 5-0. I think she should try harder. The next round will be even tougher,” Tiken Borgohain told ANI.

“I don’t think it’s good to look too far ahead. She will try her best and give 100% in the Olympics. If she plays well, she will definitely achieve good results,” Tiken added.

Making her Summer Games debut, the 20-year-old Hofstad adopted an aggressive approach in the first two rounds. However, Lovlina was resolute in defence, smothering her opponent’s punches while countering with precision, according to Olympics.com.

The Norwegian boxer improved in the third round, but it wasn’t enough to outscore the reigning Asian Games silver medalist. With this win, Borgohain advanced to the quarterfinals.

Borgohain will face Li Qian of the People’s Republic of China, who defeated her for the Asian Games gold in Hangzhou last year.

The Lovlina Borgohain vs. Li Qian women’s 75kg quarterfinal is scheduled for Sunday, August 4, at 3:02 PM IST.

On Tuesday, India faced setbacks in boxing in both men’s and women’s events. The Philippines’ Nesthy Petecio knocked out Indian boxer Jasmine Lamboria in the women’s 57 kg round of 32 match.

Like Preeti, Jasmine struggled from the start, trailing at the end of the first round, with four out of five judges awarding ten points to the Philippine boxer.

In the second round, Petecio continued to dominate, appearing at ease throughout, and all five judges awarded her ten points.

In the third and final round, Jasmine needed a remarkable comeback to turn the bout in her favour. However, the comeback never materialised, and she lost the match 0-5 on points. Amit Panghal also exited the Paris Olympics following a loss in the round of 16 in the men’s 51 kg category.

Amit lost to Zambia’s Patrick Chinyemba by 1-4. In the initial rounds, Amit was highly aggressive, and both boxers traded punches. But in the third round, judges ruled entirely in favour of the Zambian boxer, who won by a split decision of 1-4.

World champion Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) locked an Olympic quota for herself by moving into the final while Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Narender Berwal ( 92kg) signed off with bronze medals at the Asian Games on Tuesday. Borgohain, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist, cleverly managed her bout against Asian Championship silver medallist Baison Manikon of Thailand to win by an unanimous 5-0 decision and remain in the hunt for a gold medal in the continental showpiece. Preeti, whose father is an assistant sub-inspector in Haryana Police, put up a good show but lost 0-5 to reigning flyweight champion China’s Chang Yuan. She has already secured an Olympic quota.

Narender went down 0-5 to Olympic and world championship medallist Kamshybek Kunkabayev of Kazakhstan in the semifinal to miss out on an Olympic quota.

In a bizarre incident, Sachin Siwach lost his 57kg quarterfinal 1-4 bout to Lyu Ping in three minutes and 7 seconds after the Chinese sustained a cut on his forehead following a clash of the head between the two boxers.

Ping had won the first round 4-1 and when it was clear he couldn’t continue boxing due to the bleeding, the judges decided to rule the bout in favour of the Chinese.

In the first bout of the day, both southpaw boxers showcased their high skill and ring IQs in the opening three minutes. While Preeti looked to poke and peck with a right hook, the Chinese kept landing right hooks.

At one point, the 19-year-old Indian landed a double jab, followed by two right hooks and two body shots to score crucial points. But Chang replied aggressively with a right cross and a flurry of jabs.

The Chinese boxer was cleaner with her punches and the four of the five judges ruled in her favour in the opening round.

In the second round, Preeti dialled up the intensity, trying to break Chang’s defence. But the Chinese, who enjoyed the crowd support, defended well, moving around the ring.

Chang was warned a couple of times for hitting behind the head of Preeti. Having done enough, the Chinese boxer continued to defend in the final three minutes to take the win.

In the 75kg semifinal, Borgohain controlled the bout by using her long reach and kept landing straight punches.

Trailing after the opening round, Manikon went all out in the next three minutes only to lose steam in the final round. Borgohain was the fresher of the two in the final round and just evaded whatever little punches Manikon threw at her.

After landing a few blows early on, Narender went into his shell. The Kazakh boxer asserted his authority taking the round 5-0.

In the next six minutes Kunkabayev showed more urgency, landing punches at will as Narender looked clueless. Trailing on all cards, the Indian was probably trying to go for a knockout but that punch never came.

Hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and Olympic medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain will be the flag-bearers of the Indian contingent during the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Hangzhou on September 23. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) took the decision on Wednesday to have joint flag-bearers for the continental showpiece. A total of 655 Indian athletes are competing in the Asian Games this time, which is the largest contingent ever. “We arrived at the decision after much deliberation today,” Indian contingent Chef de Mission Bhupender Singh Bajwa told PTI.

“This time we will have two flag-bearers leading the contingent at the Asian Games — hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and boxer Lovlina Borgohain,” added Bajwa, who is also Wushu Association of India chief.

Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra had done the honours at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.

Lovlina had won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in the 69kg category. This year, she won gold in 75kg category at the World Women’s Boxing Championship in New Delhi.

Harmanpreet is one of the best drag-flickers in the world and was part of the team that won the historic bronze at the Tokyo Games, breaking the more than four-decade-long Indian hockey team’s medal drought in the Olympics.

The Indian men’s hockey team would be aiming for a gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games to secure automatic qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Bajwa will be assisted at the Asian Games by four deputy chefs de mission as the job entails a lot of responsibility.

Bajwa is also the chairman of the Indian Olympic Association-constituted ad-hoc committee for wrestling.
