Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain crashed out of the Paris Olympics after losing to China’s Li Qian in the women’s 75kg quarterfinal at North Paris Arena on Sunday. With Lovlina’s 1-4 split result, India failed to win any medals in boxing events in Paris. Following her loss, Lovlina spoke to IANS and expressed her disappointment for not being able to recreate her heroics from the previous edition. “I am having trouble accepting this defeat as I failed to achieve what I thought I would. I have to see where I lacked in the contest, if I knew beforehand where I lacked maybe I could have been champion,” Lovlina told IANS.

Alongside the disappointment of Lovlina’s elimination, many fans were left frustrated with the result of Nishant Dev’s quarterfinal bout against Mexican fighter Marco Verde as the Indian dominated the first two rounds but the fight was adjudged 1-4 in favour of the opponent.

Many fans have questioned the transparency of the scoring system in boxing which Lovlina brushed upon during the conversation.

“Boxing is a different sport, it’s difficult to figure out what is happening in the game as you may feel like you have won but it is up to the judges’ perception of how they score the bout. You can’t really say what is right or wrong, you just have to accept it,” she added.

The 2024 Paris Olympics have been a bittersweet one so far for India with many athletes having incredible campaigns but missing out on medals in crucial matchups. However, one of the greatest stories in the opening fortnight has been that of Manu Bhaker.

The 22-year-old became the first Indian woman shooter in the history of the Olympics to win a medal when she bagged bronze in the 10m air pistol women’s event. She followed her history-making win by becoming the first Ievent Indian to win two medals at a single edition of the Olympics post-independence when she teamed up with Sarabjot Singh to secure bronze in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team and just missed out on her third when she finished fourth in the women’s 25m Pistol category.

She has also been given the honour of being India’s flag-bearer at the closing ceremony of the tournament. Lovlina expressed her joy for Manu and thanked her for bringing ‘pride to our nation’.

“I am so happy for her. She did what we could not do in this Olympics and winning two medals is an incredible feat so I want to thank her for keeping the pride of our nation,” concluded the 2020 Tokyo Bronze medallist.

The highly anticipated Olympics 2024 are all set to kick-start from July 26 and will conclude on August 11. The Olympics will be hosted in Paris and a total of 206 countries will be participating from all over the world. Lovlina Borgohain Secures Silver Medal In Grand Prix 2024 Competition

Olympic medalist Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain secured a silver medal in the Grand Prix 2024 competition held in the Czech Republic. On the final day of the competition on Saturday, Lovlina lost 2-3 in her third bout against Li Qian of China. The competition was held in a round-robin format from June 12 to 15. Lovlina won her first bout 3-2 against England’s Chantal Reid but lost the second bout 0-5 against Cindy Ngamba of the Olympic Refugee team. Lovlina will be one of the boxers to represent the country in the Paris 2024 Olympics, which will be held from July 26 to August 11.

She had won a bronze medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the welterweight category.

India bagged six quotas in boxing for the Paris Olympics 2024 with Amit Panghal (51 kg), Nishant Dev (71kg), Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57 Kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) in different categories.

Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 75kg), two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen (women’s 50kg) and Preeti Pawar (women’s 54kg) had clinched their respective quotas in the Asian Games at Hangzhou last year.

The rest of India’s three quotas came during the Boxing World Qualifiers event in June. Amit, Nishant and Jaismine all won their quarterfinal bouts in their respective weight categories to obtain the quota.

In the Olympics, India will be looking to outdo their all-time best tally of seven medals, including a gold, which they achieved in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In the Paralympics, India will be aiming to outdo their best tally of 19 medals, including five gold, achieved at the 2020 edition in Tokyo.

Asian Games 2023: Boxer Lovlina Borgohain Settles For Silver, Parveen Hooda Signs Off With Bronze

Tokyo Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain put up a lacklustre display to settle for a silver as Indian boxers signed off with a haul of five medals at the Asian Games on Wednesday. Parveen Hooda couldn’t overcome the height disadvantage against two-time world champion Lin Yu Ting of Chinese Taipei in the women’s 57kg semifinal to sign off with a bronze. Borgohain’s defensive performance cost her the gold as she was out-punched in the lop-sided final. The reigning world champion was thrashed by home favourite and two-time Olympic medallist Li Qian in the 75kg final. With Borgohain’s loss, India’s campaign came to an end. The country’s boxers thus signed off with five medals, including one silver and four bronze. In the last edition, India had won a gold and a bronze.

“I gave my best but could not bring the gold. I am happy with my performance. I will try to change the colour of the medal in the Olympics,” Borgohain said after the bout. (Asian Games Medals Tally)

“I committed some mistakes like I was playing closer to the opponent and got a point cut. I will work on the mistakes I committed,” she added.

Fighting for gold, both Borgohain and Qian looked tentative, trying to size each other up.

Borgohain, the reigning Asian champion, was unwilling to attack until the referee asked her to start fighting following which she landed right punch.

The two boxers did throw punches at each other but without much accuracy with none of them making much of an impression in the first round, which involved a lot of clinching. Borgohain was warned twice for holding and Qian narrowly took the round 3-2.

The second round followed a similar script with both boxers clinching each other. Borgohain was once again passive and after her third warning, she was hit with a point deduction for excessive holding.

Trailing after the first two rounds, Borgohain needed to be proactive but the Indian seemed content with a silver.

“Also there were lots of positive which I can take. Qualifying for Olympics from this tournament was more important to me and I achieved it,” she added.

Parveen struggles to overcome height disadvantage

Parveen, who won the 63kg bronze at the 2022 World Championships, went down to Lin via a 5-0.

Standing at five feet and seven inches, Parveen was at a disadvantage against Lin because of her height, which made it difficult for her to land scoring punches.

Lin, on the other hand, capitalised on her two-inch advantage. The 2018 bronze medallist pounded Parveen with a range of punches while fighting from afar.

Trailing on all five cards, Parveen tried a more aggressive approach in the second round but the 27-year-old Lin used her experience to ward off the Indian’s blows by using her nimble feet.

Parveen did find success sporadically but that was not enough to convince the judges as Lin kept on landing punches consistently.

Lin, who has three World Championships medals to her name, had also grabbed a bronze in the 2023 edition earlier this year, but was disqualified after she failed an eligibility test.

The 23-year-old Indian has already secured an Olympic quota for next year’s Paris Games along with two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), and Borgohain.

None of the male pugilists could earn Olympic quotes with only Narender Berwal ( 92kg) winning a medal.

India’s Asian Games 2023 Schedule: Indian Stars Will Be In Action Even Before Games Begin – Find Full Schedule

After the Asia Cup in cricket, the focus now shifts on the 2023 Asian Games. India will be aiming to scale new heights at the Asian Games 2023 after registering their best-ever medal count at the 2018 edition. The 2023 edition of the Asian Games will start on September 23 in China’s Hangzhou and will go on till October 8. The 19th edition of the Asian Games will witness a 655-member strong Indian team in action in 41 disciplines out of 61. The games will be played across 56 venues, with 481 gold medals on offer, as per Olympics.com.

Though the games will officially start on September 23, sports like cricket, football, volleyball and beach volleyball will kickstart from September 19 onwards.

Cricket
1st Game: India Women’s vs TBD – September 21

The men’s and women’s cricket teams, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Harmanpreet Kaur will be making their debut at the continental level event. The women’s team will start its campaign on September 21 and the final will be on September 25. After this, the men’s cricket teams will kickstart their campaigns from September 27 and the title clash will take place on October 7. Indian men’s team will play its first match on October 3.

Football
Men’s: India vs China (September 19, 5 PM IST) and India vs Bangladesh (September 21, 1:30 PM IST)
Women’s: India vs Chinese Taipei (5 PM)

The Indian men’s team is being led by Sunil Chhetri. Several top players are missing from the men’s team.

Volleyball

Athletics

India will field a contingent of 68 players in track and field events, this will be India’s largest representation in the sport. Olympic and World Champion Neeraj Chopra will be India’s biggest face at the event, aiming to replicate his gold-winning heroics in Jakarta in 2018. Athletics competitions will be held from September 29 to October 5, with the men’s javelin throw final on October 4 as its biggest attraction due to India’s ‘Golden Boy’ Neeraj.

Neeraj is not the only Olympic medalist from India as badminton star PV Sindhu, boxer Lovlina Borgohain, wrestler Bajrang Punia and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu are also playing at the Asian Games. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze-winning men’s hockey team is also playing.

Badminton

Badminton competition will be held from September 28 to October 7, with Sindhu leading the 19-member Indian team which will feature Commonwealth champions Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy, who is also the bronze medalist at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships held last month.

Weightlifting

Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Chanu, a former World Champion as well will be making her Asiad debut in women’s 49 kg weightlifting on September 30. Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist Bajrang Punia, the defending champion in men’s 65 kg freestyle wrestling will play on October 6.

Boxing

Meanwhile, boxing at the Asian Games will be a qualifying event for the Paris Olympics next year. Two-time and current world champion Nikhat Zareen will kickstart her campaign in women’s 50 kg from September 24 and Lovlina will represent India in women’s 75 kg from September 26 onwards. Boxing competitions will end on October 5.

Hockey

The hockey competition will also serve as a Paris 2024 Olympics qualifier, with Indian hockey teams aiming for gold each, which will give them a direct ticket to next year’s multi-sport extravaganza. The men’s hockey event will kickstart from September 24 and the Indian women’s hockey team will play from September 25.

Hurdler Jyothi Yarraji, steeplechase racer Avinash Sable, long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, former Asian champion boxer Shiva Thapa, Indian table tennis stars Manika Batra, Sharath Kamal and teen chess prodigy R Praggnanandhaa are some other high-profile players who will be in action.

The games were originally slated for 2022 but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in China last year. India had registered 70 medals in 2018 at Jakarta, their best tally to date.
