Mumbai:

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray said today that MLAs from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will boycott the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected state assembly. alleging tampering with electronic voting machines (EVMs).

“Today we have decided that our winning MLA will not take oath today. We have doubts about EMV, we are not taking oath today in protest. Democracy is being murdered,” Mr Thackeray said.

The move comes amid a special three-day session of the newly constituted 288-member Maharashtra legislative assembly, which began today. The session, overseen by pro-tem Speaker Kalidas Kolambkar, includes the oath administration for MLAs, the election of the assembly Speaker, a trust vote for the new government, and an address by the Governor. Mr Kolambkar, a senior BJP MLA, was appointed pro-tem Speaker by Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Friday.

“The results have raised questions, the entire process seems tainted. People are unhappy, and something appears wrong,” alleged Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar.

The Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, won 230 of the 288 assembly seats in the November 20 elections. This was followed by the swearing-in of Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Minister, with Mr Shinde and Mr Pawar taking oath as Deputy Chief Ministers on December 5.

A week-long suspense over the Mahayuti’s chief ministerial candidate had prompted Mr Thackeray to label the delay as an “insult to Maharashtra.” Mr Thackeray alleged that the BJP-led coalition took over a week after the results to decide on a chief minister, claiming that the delay and lack of transparency undermined democratic principles.

Mr Thackeray also targeted the BJP’s decision to announce the swearing-in date before formally staking claim to form the government, calling it “anarchy.” “Rules seem to apply only to opposition parties,” he said.

Mumbai’s Azad Maidan has been transformed into a fortified zone for the event.

Mumbai:
BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis will take oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the third time today. The event in Mumbai will also see Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and NCP’s Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Ministers in the newly formed cabinet.

Here are 10 points on this big story:

  1. After weeks of intense political discussions, Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar officially staked their claim to form the Mahayuti government by presenting their letters of support to Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan.

  2. The swearing-in ceremony, scheduled for 5:30 pm, will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of prominent dignitaries, including Chief Ministers from various NDA states.

  3. “The swearing-in ceremony of the new government will be held tomorrow at 5:30 pm. in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I met Eknath Shinde and requested him to join us in this government, as it is the wish of MahaYuti workers. We will fulfil the promises made to the people of Maharashtra,” Mr Fadnavis said.

  4. This marks Mr Fadnavis’ return to the helm after being unanimously elected Leader of the Maharashtra BJP Legislative Party on Wednesday. He secured the post following the BJP’s commanding performance in the recent Assembly elections, where the MahaYuti alliance achieved a landslide victory with 235 out of 288 seats.

  5. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party, clinching 132 seats. The Shiv Sena and NCP added muscle to the alliance, securing 57 and 41 seats, respectively.

  6. In contrast, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition suffered a crushing defeat, with Congress winning just 16 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) managing 20, and the NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar securing only 10.

  7. The BJP’s central observer, Vijay Rupani, announced Mr Fadnavis’ unanimous election as the legislature party leader on Wednesday. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attended the legislative meeting and termed the Mahayuti alliance as a “double engine government” poised to propel Maharashtra’s development.

  8. Eknath Shinde, who served as the Chief Minister in the outgoing government, expressed his satisfaction with the Mahayuti’s governance over the past two-and-a-half years. “I am very happy with the completion of two-and-a-half years. The work done by our government–the MahaYuti government–by the three of us and our team in the last 2.5 years is remarkable. It will be written in golden letters in history. We are proud to have taken such significant decisions,” said Mr Shinde.

  9. Mumbai’s Azad Maidan has been transformed into a fortified zone for the event. Over 4,000 police personnel, including specialised units like the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), Quick Response Teams (QRT), and bomb disposal squads, have been deployed to ensure the safety of the attendees. Traffic in South Mumbai is being managed by 280 personnel from the traffic wing.

  10. The ceremony is expected to draw an audience of 42,000, with seating arrangements for 2,000 VIPs, including religious leaders and political leaders.
