Pune:

Heavy rain has led to waterlogging in several areas in Pune and Kolhapur and paralysed normal life. Schools have been shut and several residential apartments in Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad have been flooded. Three people have been electrocuted while wading through a waterlogged street.

Three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have joined rescue work at Ekta Nagar, Sinhgad Road and Varje areas. Some places have water up to the waist level. The Baba Bhide bridge on Mutha river is now underwater after the water level rose following the downpour.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has reviewed the situation and asked the district administration to stay alert. Pune collector Suhas Diwase has ordered the closure of all tourist spots in the district for 48 hours. He has also said traffic movement will be prohibited on bridges in danger of being submerged. The district administration has also asked residents to stay indoors and step out only if it’s necessary.

Khadakwasla dam has reached its full capacity due to heavy rainfall. An alert has been issued to residents living along Mutha riverbank.

At Deccan Gymkhana area, three people were electrocuted early today when they tried to recover a handcart from a flooded street. Abhishek Ghanekar, Akash Mane and Shiva Parihar were street food vendors and used the handcart as their stall.

Mumbai, too, is receiving heavy rainfall and some areas in Dombivali have been flooded. The Andheri Subway has been closed due to waterlogging. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said that Vihar Lake, one of the seven lakes supplying water to the city, started overflowing early today. The capacity of the lake is 2769 crore litres.

The weather office has issued a red alert for Maharashtra Thursday and has predicted extremely heavy rain.
