Mitchell Starc Pauses Run-Up Twice, Avoids Running Out Non-Striker Kusal Perera In Australia vs Sri Lanka World Cup Clash https://artifexnews.net/mitchell-starc-avoids-running-out-non-striker-kusal-perera-warns-batter-instead-watch-4485080/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 08:46:18 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/mitchell-starc-avoids-running-out-non-striker-kusal-perera-warns-batter-instead-watch-4485080/ Read More “Mitchell Starc Pauses Run-Up Twice, Avoids Running Out Non-Striker Kusal Perera In Australia vs Sri Lanka World Cup Clash” »

For the first time in the Cricket World Cup 2023, Australia had the opportunity to inflict a non-striker run-out, a form of dismissal that often triggers debates on social media, in the match against Sri Lanka on Monday. Mitchell Starc, with the ball in his hand, could’ve dislodged the stumps at the non-striker’s end where Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera was placed. However, Starc decided against doing so in the first instance and instead gave the batter a warning. Starc also informed the line umpire about the same, highlighting how Perera is becoming prone to leaving his crease early.

The non-striker dismissal has often triggered debates among two schools of thought. One believes in inflicting dismissal whenever an opportunity arises while the other believes a warning should be given. Starc, it seems, belongs to the latter.

A few minutes later, Starc paused his run-up once again, thinking Perera was leaving the crease early this time too. However, the Sri Lankan wasn’t as early as the last time on the second occasion.

As for the match, Sri Lankan skipper Kusal Mendis won the toss and elected to bat against Australia in the Cricket World Cup match at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium. Both teams are yet to open their points tally in the top global ODI event. While Australia have lost to India and South Africa, Sri Lanka have lost to South Africa and Pakistan.

Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis said the wicket might turn a bit in the second half which will give some advantage to bowlers.

“We will bat first, the wicket is looking good and it might turn a bit in the second half. We have two changes. Dasun and Matheesha are not playing and Chamika and Lahiru Kumara are playing. Unfortunately, Dasun is not playing, really important match today. The par score might be 280-300, hopefully, we can manage that,” he said

Pat Cummins, the Australian skipper said at the toss that the team has worked on areas it needs to sharpen up.

“We probably would have batted as well but do not think it is too big a difference. The last two days we had training sessions and everyone is very clear on quite a few areas we need to sharpen up. We are playing the same team.”

Jasprit Bumrah provided the Indian cricket team with a perfect start to the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka as he dismissed Kusal Perera on the third ball of the match on Sunday. The ball pitched on the middle stump and sharply swung outside tempting Perera to push at it. The left-hander could not stop himself and ended up edging it back to the wicket-keeper. KL Rahul was alert behind the stumps and he pulled off a good catch by diving full length to his left. It was a a brilliant start to the game and Mohammed Siraj followed it up with six wickets, bundling out Sri Lanka for 50.

Later, the Rohit Sharma-led side chased down the target in just 6.1 overs and clinch the Asia Cup title with a 10-wicket victory.

Talking about the match, Sri Lanka opted to bat first but Siraj soon made them regret this decision as they were reduced to 13/6 after he took four wickets in the 6th over.

Kusal Mendis (17) and Dushan Hemantha (13*) swung their bats for a while, offering tiny moments of respite. Siraj ended with 6/21 in his seven overs while Pandya took 3/3 in 2.2 overs. Bumrah also got 1/23 in five overs as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 50 in 15.2 overs.

Ishan Kishan (23*) and Shubman Gill (27*) chased down the target in 6.1 overs without any loss of wicket.

India captured its eighth Asia Cup title and Siraj took home the ‘Player of the Match’ award. Kuldeep Yadav (nine wickets) was given the ‘Player of the Series’ award for his bamboozling spin bowling in the tournament. Shubman Gill with 302 runs in six games and one century and two fifties, scored the most runs in the tournament.

Charith Asalanka was the star for Sri Lanka as he slammed six runs in the final two balls of the match to guide his side to the Asia Cup 2023 final after a win over Pakistan. Asalanka was unbeaten on 49 off 47 deliveries and he was able to finish the game well after Kusal Mendis provided them with a brilliant start to the run chase. However, the one cricketer who has earned a lot of praise besides these two was Pramod Madushan who sacrificed his wicket to get Asalanka back on strike on the fourth ball of the final over.

Madushan missed a ball from Zaman Khan and although Asalanka made a run for it from the non-striker’s end, he stayed inside the crease to make sure that they cannot be dismissed if the wicket-keeper comes up with a direct hit. Rizwan went for the direct hit but was unable to hit the stumps.

Once Asalanka crossed over, he started running and although Zaman was able to complete the run-out on the other end, Asalanka was back on strike and that proved to be the game-changer.

Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad was all praise for Madushan.

Great game awareness from Pramod Madushan yesterday night. Did not leave the crease until Asalanka made it. Very impressive. @ashwinravi99 probably one of the finest at making good use of the rules would be v impressed,” Prasad posted on the X (formerly known as Twitter).

Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin replied to his post with an interesting analogy.

“Absolutely! Just He missed the ball, Asalanka was charging down the pitch ( high octane pressure ) and yet this guy stood his ground until the keeper missed his attempt and then started running. All I can say is that these sort of reactions come from practice and this happens mostly in Tennis ball cricket,” he replied.

It was a case of so close yet so far for the Pakistan cricket team as they failed to reach the Asia Cup 2023 after a last-ball defeat against Sri Lanka in their Super 4 clash on Thursday. With 8 runs needed to win from the final over of the rain-affected game, Pakistan pacer Zaman Khan was able to keep the Sri Lanka batters in check as he conceded just two runs in four balls. But, Charith Asalanka proved to be ultimate hero for Sri Lanka as he scored six runs in the last two balls to clinch the win. The Pakistan side was left stunned as skipper Babar was visibly upset at how the game ended for his team.

Kusal Mendis‘ 91 and an unbeaten 49 by Charith Asalanka helped Sri Lanka edge out Pakistan by two wickets in a last-ball thriller of the Asia Cup to set up a final clash with India.

Chasing a DLS revised target of 252 in the 42-overs-a-side contest in Colombo, Sri Lanka needed eight from the final over and achieved the target with Asalanka’s winning hit on the last ball at 1.07 am local time.

A raucous home crowd rejoiced but the result broke the heart of millions of fans awaiting an India-Pakistan final in the 50-over tournament, a prelude to the upcoming ODI World Cup.

The left-handed Asalanka held his nerve despite Shaheen Shah Afridi’s two wickets in two balls in the penultimate over and the first four balls from Zaman Khan giving away just two runs and a wicket in the 42nd over.

Mendis set up victory with a 100-run third-wicket stand with Sadeera Samarawickrama, who made 48, but Asalanka took it on himself after their departure.

“Kusal and Sadeera played brilliant knocks. I think they are the best players of spin in the Sri Lanka squad,” said skipper Dasun Shanaka.

“And Charith, showed great character. Special feeling, back to back finals. I must thank the crowds who kept supporting us, and looking forward to the finals.”
