Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Edben crashed out in the Wimbledon men’s doubles second round after straight set defeat against Hendrick Jebens and Constantin Frantzen in London on Saturday. The second seeded Bopanna and Ebden went down to their unseeded German opponents 3-6, 6-7 (4) in little over an hour. The Australian Open winners Bopanna and Ebden conceded a break in the first set and it was enough for Jebens and Frantzen to go ahead in the match.

The match suspended due to rain when the second set was level at five games. There was no service break in the set.

Upon the resumption, the match drifted into the tie-breaker where the Jebens Frantzen took a comfortable 4-1 lead, which they never squandered.

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden lost the US Open 2023 men’s doubles final against Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury but a moment of pure sportsmanship by the 43-year-old Indian tennis star have won a lot of hearts. Bopanna and Ebden won the first set 6-2 but ended up losing the second one 3-6. With the third set 4-2 in favour of his opponents, Ebden played a brilliant forehand winner. However, Bopanna approached the umpire right after the point and explained that the ball had touched his forearm on the way. It was a brilliant show of honesty by the veteran and the point was awarded to the opponent. After the match, Rajiv Ram appreciated the gesture by Bopanna during the match.

Rohan Bopanna’s agonising wait to win his maiden men’s doubles Grand Slam title continued as he lost the hard-fought US Open final with partner Matthew Ebden to defending champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury in New York on Friday.

Playing only his second men’s doubles final at a Major tournament, Bopanna and his Australian teammate lost the title clash 6-2 3-6 4-6 after two hours and one minute. Ram and Sailsbury became the first team to win three straight US Open titles.

Bopanna was playing the US Open final for the second time in his career and this time as the oldest player at 43.

He had finished a runner-up with his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi way back in 2010, losing the title clash to the legendary Bryan brothers.

Overall, it was third Grand Slam final for Bopanna, who won his first and only Major in 2017 when he lifted the French Open mixed doubles trophy with Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski.

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi are only two male tennis players from India to have won Grand Slam titles.

Rohan Bopanna’s agonising wait to win his maiden men’s doubles Grand Slam title continued as he lost the hard-fought US Open final with partner Matthew Ebden to defending champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury in New York on Friday.

Bopanna and Ebden got the start they wanted, breaking their rivals in the very first game. The Indian’s ferocious forehand was at work. He blasted a winner on a feeble return to earn three breakpoints.

Ram only helped them by fluffing an easy backhand volley on the first chance. Bopanna consolidated the lead with an easy hold.

The sixth seeds had a chance to go up 3-0 but could not convert the breakpoint when the Briton served at 30-40. The defending champions survived a few anxious moments but eventually got on board after playing three deuce points in that third game. Ebden’s volley winner on Salibury’s return earned them another breakpoint and they sealed that when the Briton could pick up a half-volley.

This put Bopanna and Ebden firmly in control of the contest as they were now leading the first set 5-2.

The Australian came out to serve out the set and delivered. Ebden landed his serves exactly where he wanted to go up 40-0 and Ram hit his forehand return long on the first set point.

Salisbury was feeling the heat. It was evident when he came out to serve in the second set.

The Briton served two double faults and was down a breakpoint when Bopanna found a screaming backhand passing winner at 30-all, running on his left but eventually the third seeds managed to hold the third game to stay alive in the match.

Soon it was Bopanna who was now struggling with his serve. He served a double fault and Ram’s strategy of firing deep returns unsettled the Indian a bit and it was enough to steal that crucial break that put the holders 4-2 up.

Having grown in confidence with that break of serve, Ram’s serve got better and Sailsbury’s ground strokes too improved along with movement on the court.

Ram sealed the set with an ace, forcing a decider.

Clearly, the momentum had shifted.

To make it even tougher for himself Bopanna was down 0-40 in the opening game of the final set but saved all breakpoints by reeling off five straight points for a tough hold.

Heart-stopping action followed in the fourth game when Salisbury staved off three breakpoints to stay on serve.

With two teams raising the level of the tennis being played, intense action was witnessed. Bopanna served a double fault at 30-all in the fifth game to be down by another breakpoint.

The Indian went for an all-out cross court forehand winner but missed the line by a very thin margin to hand a crucial break to the rival team that consolidated the break with an easy hold.

Down 2-4 in the final set, Bopanna showed exemplary sportsman spirit and character when he himself conceded a point after a ball deflected off his right arm when his serving partner made a forehand return.

It was considered a winner as the chair umpire could not notice the deflection but the Indian himself told the umpire that he was conceding the point. Ebden held the serve and so did Bopanna in the next game.

Ram came out to serve for the championship and there was no twist in the tale.

India’s doubles ace Rohan Bopanna, who is playing some of the best tennis of his career, became the oldest Grand Slam doubles finalist in the Open Era as he and his doubles partner Matthew Ebden reached the US Open final.  Producing outstanding tennis at the Flushing Meadows in front of a handsome Louis Armstrong crowd, Bopanna and Matthew Ebden defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in Thursday’s semifinals to set a summit clash against Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. In April 2021, Bopanna said he was wondering why he was still playing tennis. The Indian star had just lost a match in Estoril with Alexander Bublik. He had lost all seven matches he had played at the start of the season, winning only a single set.

“I was sitting near the ocean and I was telling myself, ‘What am I even doing? I’m not even winning matches, I have a family at home. Should I just call it a day and just go back?’. Our daughter was four years old right now and I thought, ‘Why not? Let’s do that,” Bopanna told ATPTour.com.

Instead, Bopanna continued on and is playing some of the best tennis of his career. Bopanna and Matthew Ebden will play Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury for the US Open title on Friday.

The Indian has won five ATP Masters 1000 titles with five different partners, although he has never won a major championship in men’s doubles. Not bad for someone whose knees lack cartilage.

“It’s worn out completely. It’s just worn out. It’s not a tear. Both my knees have no cartilage and in 2019 I was on two, or three painkillers a day. [In] 2020 I started Iyengar yoga, and that actually made a tremendous difference. I went from two, or three painkillers a day to no painkillers today. I think the only time sometimes I take an anti-inflammatory is from playing two matches a day. At that time the body says, ‘Hello, please slow down, you still have no cartilage,” Bopanna said.

When professional tennis was interrupted because of the Covid-19 outbreak, Bopanna developed an interest in Iyengar yoga. He worked out four times a week for 90 minutes.

“It really made the difference. I said ‘Okay’. Then when I started playing, I felt pain-free. And then that was a whole new ballgame,” Bopanna explained.

Today, the 24-time tour-level doubles titlist does a shorter period of yoga in the morning.

“I think the yoga kind of helped align the body better, helped the mind as well [stay] calmer.  And then having the right team, I’ve had Scott Davidoff travelling with me for 12, 13 years now and that has made a huge difference to understanding how I’m playing. I’ve invested in myself in terms of bringing a good physio on board this year. Last year, I didn’t have that,” Bopanna said.

Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna and his Australia partner Matthew Ebden will take on the French pair of Nicholas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the US Open men’s doubles semi-finals on Thursday. In the quarterfinals, Bopanna and Ebden saved seven set points in first set before outclassing Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow of the USA. Bopanna and Ebden had reached the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championships where they had lost to Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski. Bopanna now has the opportunity to secure a place in a Grand Slam men’s doubles final for the second time in his career.
