Australia speedster Pat Cummins said that he had no idea he had accomplished the feat of becoming the second Australian bowler to score a hat-trick in T20 World Cups before it came on the screen. David Warner’s 34-ball fifty and Cummins’ hat-trick headlined Australia’s breezy 28-run victory over Bangladesh via DLS method in the rain-curtailed clash in the Super 8 match of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Thursday (local time). The 31-year-old speedster scripted history in Antigua when he became the second Australian player and seventh overall to claim a hat-trick in an ICC T20 World Cup match.

The pacer, who returned to the team after a rest, now joins compatriot Brett Lee as the only Australian bowler to have taken a hat-trick in a Men’s T20 World Cup, after the legendary right-armer achieved the feat in 2007 — also coincidentally against Bangladesh.

The veteran pacer expressed his satisfaction at the post-match presentation for taking Hridoy’s wicket and limiting Bangladesh’s total to 140 runs.

“I had no idea, then saw when it came up on the screen. Set batter in, playing the innings, you never know how it’ll go about, so that was a big wicket (on Hridoy’s wicket) and happy to have restricted them,” Cummins said in a post-match presentation.

Cummins collected two quick scalps to end Australia’s 18th over and then removed Hridoy upon return to start over 20, completing the tournament’s first hat-trick. It capped off a strong fightback for Cummins with the ball, finishing with figures of 29/3 off his four overs.

The fast bowler spoke openly about the team’s bench strength, which comprises pacer Nathan Ellis and spinner Ashton Agar.

“Few hat-tricks in juniors, never for Australia. Ashton Agar and Nathan Ellis, on the bench, have hat-tricks and joined their club. It’s pretty awesome to tick that off. Good club to be part of,” he added.

The pacer stated that the team’s performance against Bangladesh was fairly polished, and their primary goal was to win.

“Fairly polished performance, the goal was to win and we did well with the run-rate, we’ll need to continue with the momentum going ahead in the Super 8s,” Cummins said.

The win propelled Australia to the top of Group 1 surpassing India on net run rate, and now the Aussies will meet Afghanistan on June 22.

Defending champions England’s nine-wicket loss to New Zealand in their World Cup opener would have given Jos Butter the jitters, and the skipper would like his teammates to make a strong comeback when they take on Bangladesh in Dharamshala on Tuesday. The loss against New Zealand was an early wake-up call for Buttler, whose team members know the Indian pitches and the conditions here like the back of their hand with many of them playing in the Indian Premier League.

While a score of 282 was always going to be difficult to defend at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the pace at which Kiwi opener Devon Conway and young left-handed batter Rachin Ravindra decimated the England bowling, scoring unbeaten centuries and making a mockery by finishing the contest in only the 37th over, would have jangled many a nerve in the team management and the fans back home.

While the likes of New Zealand pace bowlers Trent Boult, Matt Henry decimated the England batting, on the other hand, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and Sam Curran were simply ineffective in breaking the mammoth 272-run partnership between Conway and Ravindra.

While former England skipper Joe Root, opener Jonny Bairstow and the skipper himself made some useful contributions, a big innings was sadly lacking, which cost the defending champions the opening match.

Bangladesh would like to exploit those chinks in England’s armour when they clash at the HPCA Stadium, that has drawn flak for the reported quality of the outfield.

Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott had expressed his displeasure over the outfield at the Dharamsala Stadium following the six-wicket loss to Bangladesh in their opening match here, saying it was sheer fortune that some of the players did not pick up niggles while fielding.

Injuries so early in the tournament to any of their key players could jeopardise any team’s chances in the tournament and both side would like to avoid such a scenario.

While Buttler would like a more committed performance from both his batters and bowlers, whose best efforts could not breach the defences of Conway and Ravindra, Bangladesh would be upbeat following their winning start in the tournament.

While 36-year-old all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will always be a threat to any side, top-order batters Litton Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto, among others, have also given fine performances over the years.

In a low-scoring match against Afghanistan here on Saturday, both Miraz and Najmul smashed fine half-centuries as they overhauled the 156-run total with more than 15 overs to spare.

While England will certainly be the favourites, Bangladesh know how to turn the tide, and the defending champions know all too well that they can ill-afford a second successive loss.

Teams

Bangladesh:Shakib Al Hasan (c), Najmul Hossain Shanto, Hasan Mahmud, Litton Das, Mahedi Hasan, Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mustafizur Rahman, Nasum Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Tanzid Hasan, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Taskin Ahmed, Towhid Hridoy.

England:Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

]]>

The glittering all-round performance of Mehidy Hasan Miraz headlined Bangladesh’s smooth six-wicket victory over Afghanistan in their World Cup opener in Dharamsala on Saturday. Miraz first employed his off-spin effectively to take 3 for 25, helping Bangladesh to bundle out Afghanistan for 156, and then returned to make a crucial 57 off 73 balls in his side’s facile chase that got over in 34.4 overs. Najmul Shanto too chipped in for the Tigers with a patient unbeaten 59 off 83 balls. Chasing 157, Bangladesh were wobbling a bit at 27 for 2 after openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das returned within the first seven overs.

However, Miraz and Shanto milked 97 runs for the third wicket in just above 22 overs to carry Bangladesh closer to the finishing line.

The tackiness in the pitch made a cautious approach mandatory for the Bangladesh batters, and they responded to the task while rotating the strike efficiently through nips and tucks around.

However, they also did not miss any opportunity to free their arms. Shanto danced down the tracks to deposit Mujeeb Ur Rahman over long on for a clean six.

Fittingly, it was Shanto who brought the winning runs when he smashed pacer Naveen-ul-Haq for two successive boundaries.

Earlier, Shakib Al Hasan and Miraz exploited a slightly tacky pitch to the hilt to restrict Afghanistan to a meagre 156.

Shakib and Miraz shared six wickets equally among them as Afghanistan spectacularly imploded, as only Rahmanullah Gurbaz (47 off 62 balls) offered some token fight.

However, there was no sign of such a collapse when Afghanistan were comfortably placed at 112 for two in the 25th over.

Gurbaz and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi were consolidating their third-wicket alliance, but the pace-spin combination of Mustafizur Rahman and Miraz rocked Afghanistan with two wickets in five balls.

Miraz was the first to come to the party. Shahidi, who was struggling to force pace against spinners, finally went for a desperate big shot off the off-spinner that was snaffled by Towhid Hridoy at mid-on.

Gurbaz too soon departed as his attempt to clear Rahman ended in the hands of Tanzid Hasan in the deep.

From that point, the Afghans slipped into a panic mode, and lost wickets at regular intervals as Bangladesh bowlers mounted pressure on them with a tidy spell.

Shakib’s performance too deserved a special mention. The Bangladesh captain, who elected to field first, led the bowlers from the front with an impeccable show of spin bowling.

The veteran left-arm spinner is expected to lead Bangladesh’s bowling effort in this tournament, and Shakib showed that he is ready for the task with a fine display on this day.

The Afghanistan batsmen, who has a reasonable amount of experience in tackling spin, failed to read him either off the hand or off the pitch.

The dismissal of Najibullah Zadran underlined that point. Zadran failed to read a ball that came along with the hand and held its line.

The ball went past his tentative push to rattle the stumps, and Afghanistan were in all sorts of trouble, a position that ended with their defeat.

The Cricket World Cup, which starts in India on October 5, will bring together the cream of the white ball world. The crowds will hurry to watch established stars like Ben Stokes, Virat Kohli and Trent Boult but they will also be on the lookout for the new generation of players to emerge from the tournament. AFP picks out five who will be vying to make a name for themselves.

Noor Ahmad (Afghanistan)

It is always exciting when someone a little bit different comes along and 18-year-old Noor is certainly that, a left-arm wrist spinner with a high action and good control as well as decent pace. He made his Under-19 debut for Afghanistan when he was just 14 and was only 17 when he made his full ODI debut against Sri Lanka last year and then took 4-10 against Zimbabwe in his only T20I thus far. Noor starred for Gujarat in the IPL and is in demand from numerous franchises around the world – in India he will offer important back-up to his idol and influence Rashid Khan.

Expert view from Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan: “That little kid, he just wants to learn. He has got the opportunity now and I am so, so happy he has been delivering. It’s great news for Afghanistan cricket.”

Matheesha Pathirana (Sri Lanka)

Since the retirement of the great Lasith Malinga after the 2019 World Cup, Sri Lanka have been looking for a shock bowler who can take wickets and tie up the batsmen at the close of the innings. In Pathirana they appear to have found the most like-for-like replacement possible. Also a slinger, with an even lower arm action than his model Malinga, the 20-year-old speedster with a penchant for yorkers, stepped into the fast lane when MS Dhoni pulled him into the Chennai IPL squad late in 2022 as a replacement for Adam Milne. With a perfect sense of theatre, he took the wicket of Shubman Gill with his first ball. He only made his ODI debut against Afghanistan in June but if Sri Lanka lift the trophy for the second time it will surely be part due to ‘Baby Malinga’.

Expert view from Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood: “He absorbs information very quickly, and he’s very quickly able to apply that to his game. He does it his way.”

Gus Atkinson (England)

When England won the 2019 World Cup, they swore by pace. In Jofra Archer and Mark Wood they had two quicks who could go beyond the 90mph mark on a consistent basis. Wood is back again but with Archer still recovering from a long-term elbow injury — he will be in India an official reserve — the mantle has been handed to Atkinson. The 25-year-old paceman broke through this year with some fine early season performances that earned him an England call-up for the ODI series against New Zealand in September. He only took one wicket in three matches but it is the promise of a 95mph bowler that is exciting the English.

Expert view from former England captain Alastair Cook: “He doesn’t look like he uses that much effort to get the ball down at a decent lick. It looks like there is a bit more untapped pace.”

Teja Nidamanuru (Netherlands)

If it is the dream of every Indian cricketer to play in a World Cup, not many of them would expect to do it for the Netherlands. Such is the case for 29-year-old Nidamanuru who was born in Vijayawada in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh but brought up in New Zealand — before hitching his wagon to the Dutch. Nidamanuru qualified for them in May 2022 and struck an impressive half-century on debut against West Indies. But it was his 76-ball 111 against the two-time World Cup winners in Zimbabwe in June as the Dutch tied the 375 target, that marked him out as one to watch. The West Indies, who lost the game in the Super Over, missed out on the World Cup for the first time with the Dutch taking their place at the top table.

What he says: “It’s surreal to even just be sitting here and talking of playing in a World Cup. The road to it has been hard but it feels worth it.”

Towhid Hridoy (Bangladesh)

From his days in the Under-19s, Hridoy was picked out as a 50-over gem and this may be the moment for the wristy middle-order dasher to take Bangladesh to their first ever World Cup final. Now 22, Hridoy began to enjoy T20 franchise success before being brought into the national side for the T20 series against England in March, guickly followed by the ODI series against Ireland. He has now chalked up five 50s in his 17 ODIs and, perhaps using a bat given to him by his mentor Mushfiqur Rahim, there may be more to come in India.

Expert view from Bangladesh assistant coach Nic Pothas: “He has a high ceiling in terms of his skills. He has a lot of potential and a desire to learn. I am excited for what he can do.”

]]>

Shubman Gill gave an awesome display of his talent while registering his fifth ODI hundred, but Bangladesh managed to eke out an unexpected six-run win over India in an Asia Cup Super Four match In Colombo on Friday. Gill’s 121 off 133 balls was exceptional. But it was not enough to drag India past Bangladesh’s 265 for 8, built around fifties by Shakib al Hasan (80) and Towhid Hridoy (54) after they were put into bat. India were bowled out for 259. Axar Patel (42 off 34 balls) tried gamely to bring India back into the game with some heavy blows, but the target stayed just beyond India’s grasp.

But in the tournament’s context, the result did not matter as India had already entered the final. They will face Sri Lanka on Sunday. But the night belonged to Gill, despite the end result.

Gill’s batting is all about timing and minimalism. He pulls but not with the flourish of Rohit Sharma, and he drives but not with the flair of Virat Kohli. But Gill lends his own aesthetics and grace to his game. Sample this.

Shakib dropped one a bit short and Gill stepped out just enough to meet the ball in its pitch. It was not the shimmy of a ballet dancer, but the precise footwork of a boxer.

There was no explosive loft over covers that one would normally expect, but Gill ended the moment with a simple check drive that sailed for a six over wide long-off.

Gill did that twice in one over against off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz – once over long-on and the second time straight over the bowler’s head.

The knock was remarkable also because Gill hardly received any support from the other end.

Apart from Gill none of the Indian batsmen looked part on this night, and they started the chase on a disastrous note.

Since Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya were among the five rested players, India needed heftier contributions from captain Rohit Sharma and the rest of the batters.

India also gave a break to pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

But the contributions from other batsmen never really arrived, as the highest partnership in India’s innings was a 57 between Gill and KL Rahul for the third wicket.

India started the chase in a rocky manner as Rohit departed in the first over itself, perishing to Tanzim Hasan after a half-hearted, uppish drive.

Tilak Varma, who made his ODI debut in this match, shouldered arms to Tanzim only to see his stumps getting disturbed.

Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, who played one sweep shot too many, failed to get going against a plethora of Bangladesh spinners. Among the ruins around him, Gill batted with a lot of composure. But his innings was destined to end as a study material to his unique batsmanship, rather than a catalyst to an Indian win. He holed out in the deep off Mahedi Hasan.

Earlier, Shakib and Hridoy exploited the reduced firepower in India’s bowling attack to score half-centuries. Shakib, who added 101 runs for the fifth wicket with Hridoy, made a confidence-boosting fifty for himself after struggling to make an impact recently with the bat.

The left-hander was severe on Axar, hammering the left-arm spinner for two consecutive sixes, but he found the desired only from the young Hridoy. The Shakib-Hridoy partnership also rescued Bangladesh from total disaster which they appeared to have headed at 59 for 4 in the 14th over.

But they could not expand their knocks as Shakib was cleaned up by Shardul Thakur, while Mohammed Shami accounted for Hridoy. However, Nasum Ahmed (44 off 45 balls) pushed Bangladesh past the 250-run mark as Indian bowlers lost some direction towards the business end.

India could have brought curtains on Bangladesh innings much quicker had they held on to three catches – Suryakumar, Tilak and KL Rahul being the offenders.

That laxity on the field and by the bowlers helped Bangladesh to post a competitive total that proved just enough.

A sparkling 93 by Sadeera Samarawickrama that preceded a spirited bowling effort helped Sri Lanka overcome Bangladesh by 21 runs in their Asia Cup Super 4 match in Colombo on Saturday. Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka (3/28), spinner Maheesh Theekshana (3/69) and Matheesha Pathirana (3/58) were on the money with the ball as they bundled out Bangladesh for 236, after posting 257 for 9. The visitors offered a hard fight through young Towhid Hridoy (82 off 97 balls, 7×4, 1×6) but the night did not have space for a one-man super show.

Now the Lankans can make a genuine charge towards the final with two matches remaining, but Bangladesh’s hopes of entering the title round were all but over after this setback.

They had lost to Pakistan in the Super 4 opener at Lahore by 7 wickets on Wednesday.

However, Bangladesh began their chase with them having a real chance to overhaul Lanka’s total.

Openers Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mohammad Naim added 55 runs in 11.1 overs, but Shanaka broke the burgeoning alliance.

Miraz pulled Shanaka straight into the hands of substitute Dushan Hemantha, and he soon dismissed Naim with a sharp bouncer that the batter edged to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.

Bangladesh found themselves at 83 for four soon, but veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim and Hridoy added 62 runs for the fifth wicket to take Bangladesh back on track.

Mushfiqur was not really at his fluent best but Hridoy played some lovely shots en route his fourth ODI fifty, especially in the arc between mid-wicket and fine leg.

When the boundaries were difficult to get the 22-year-old Hridoy kept the board pushing through sharp running between the wickets.

Shanaka returned to snap the threatening alliance, dismissing Mushfiqur, and a little later Theekshana trapped Hridoy in front of the wicket as Bangladesh’s spirit gradually ebbed away.

Earlier, Samarawickrama, whose 93 came off just 72 balls, and Mendis, who made an even fifty, fought hard but Lanka found the going a bit tough and ended up with a total that was just about challenging.

After the early departure of Dimuth Karunaratne, who edged pacer Mahmud to Mushfiqur behind the stumps, Lanka found some sanity through Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis.

Mendis and Nissanka (40 off 60 balls) added 74 runs for the second wicket but the partnership was not always smooth.

Mendis, in particular, was scratchy in the middle and there were edges and false shots galore in his 60-ball knock.

Nissanka was relatively more fluent, but a clever slower delivery from Shoriful Islam ended his stay, as even the DRS could not save the batter from the leg-before verdict.

The home side lost three more wickets in the span of next 14 overs as they struggled for a lively middle-over phase.

Samarawickrama took charge of the situation at this juncture.

One of Sri Lanka’s better ODI batters this year, Samarawickrama negated a rather slow pitch and Bangladesh bowlers during his fluent innings.

The right-hander was sure in his feet movement and judged the length very early, a pulled six off pacer Hasan Mahmud stood as a testimony to that.

Samarawickrama and Shanaka added 60 runs for the sixth wicket that carried them past the 200-run mark before the latter got out to Mahmud, who was impressive while taking three wickets.

Samarawickrama, who eventually got out in the last over of the innings, could have carried Sri Lanka to a better place with a bit more support but that was not forthcoming.

But the Lankan bowlers ensured that his knock did not go in vain.
