Together with Babar Azam‘s Pakistan side, the team director Mickey Arthur is also under the spotlight owing to their poor Cricket World Cup 2023 performances. While comeback and semi-final qualification chances aren’t entirely ruled out for the Pakistan team, there remain only mathematical chances when it comes to securing a top 4 position. When Pakistan great Ramiz Raja was asked about a 1992-like comeback by former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar, the former gave a cheeky response.

Manjrekar and Ramiz were involved in a chat ahead of the start of Pakistan’s World Cup match against Bangladesh in Kolkata on Tuesday. This is when the conversation took place. Here’s how it went:

Sanjay Manjrekar:“Aapko lagta hain Mickey Arthur vo kar sakte hain jo Imran Khan ne 92 mein kiya tha (Can Mickey Arthur repeat what Imran Khan did in 1992)? “

Ramiz Raja:“Main thoda has lu, allowed hain (Can I laugh on this please? Is it allowed)?”

As for the match, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and opted to bat against Pakistan in their World Cup match. Bangladesh brought back Towhid Hridoy in place of Mahedi Hasan to their playing eleven.

Pakistan made three changes bringing in Fakhar Zaman, Agha Salman and Usama Mir in place of Imam-ul-Haq, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam also wanted to bat first but it was Shakib ho asked them to bowl after winning the toss.

“We would also like to bat first. There might be some swing in it early on because there is some moisture in it. Last match we were good in all three departments. There was some good energy. I am also waiting for a big innings, I will try to convert into a hundred. Three changes, Imam, Shadab and Nawaz out. Fakhar, Salman and Usama in,” Babar said after losing the toss.

Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur warned against a “witch-hunt” after their World Cup dream suffered a likely fatal blow on Friday. Pakistan slipped to a one-wicket loss at the hands of South Africa, their fourth defeat in six games in India. Pakistan, who were ranked as the world’s top ODI team last month, won their first two games of the tournament. However, they then slumped to defeats against arch-rivals India, Australia and Afghanistan before going down to the Proteas on Friday. They will have to win their remaining three matches and hope other results go their way if they are to sneak into the semi-finals.

“They’re going to be blaming everybody, don’t worry. It’s just the way of the world,” said Arthur.

“It’s really unfair to start a witch-hunt, certainly on (captain) Babar Azam, on ‘Inzi’ (chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq), on our coaches, on the management team.

“What I do know is the boys have tried and the effort of the coaching staff, the effort of the players has been first-class. If they would see the amount of effort that the players and staff put in, they would be amazed.”

Pakistan made 270 with Saud Shakeel (52) and Babar Azam (50) in the runs before reducing South Africa from 206-4 to 250-8.

However, tailenders Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, who had earlier taken 4-60, saw the Proteas home and to the top of the 10-nation table.

Aiden Markram had set the platform for victory with a fighting 91.

Before Friday’s match the Pakistan Cricket Board had released a statement stressing it had allowed Azam and Inzamam all powers to select the World Cup squad.

Arthur admitted Pakistan were below par in the tournament.

“Look I think at a World Cup you’ve got to be playing your best game at the right time,” said Arthur who took over earlier this year.

“Our form had sort of drifted off a little bit. And there’s various reasons. We talk about it every day as to what it could have been. But our form kind of drifted off. And again, we haven’t put the perfect games together.

“We’ve batted well, we haven’t bowled well. I do think our fielding standards have been average. So, there’s a lot of work that we need to put in and get to the standards required to win a World Cup.”

Arthur admitted Pakistan were short of a challenging total on Friday.

“I thought 300 was the par score but our bowlers had given us a real chance there and they’ve given it everything. It’s a really disappointed dressing room and our players, I know, we can be proud of tonight.”

Arthur said Pakistan showed off a fighting spirit against South Africa that was lacking in their shock eight-wicket defeat to Afghanistan last Monday.

“Tonight was a totally different feeling in that dressing room to the Afghanistan game,” said Arthur.

“In the Afghanistan game, we were average in all departments. Tonight, we were okay with the bat, I thought we were very good with the ball.

“And tonight, I’m really proud of those players because they fought right to the bitter end.”

The ODI World Cup 2023 match between arch-rivals India and Pakistan has become a talk of the town, not just for the brilliance of the game but also for the post-match comments of the visitors Team Director Mickey Arthur. After the match ended in the favour of the hosts by seven wickets, Arthur mentioned that the atmosphere inside the Narendra Modi Stadium did not feel like it was ‘an ICC event’. Arthur’s comments invited a lot of backlash as many former cricketers came forward and criticized him for his choice of words.

Arthur said: “Look, I’d be lying if I said it didn’t. It didn’t seem like an ICC event to be brutally honest. It seemed like a bilateral series; it seemed like a BCCI event. I didn’t hear ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ coming through the microphones too often tonight.” Arthur, however, said that the lack of support in the crowd could not be used an excuse for the team’s heavy loss to India.

“So yes, that does play a role, but I’m not going to use that as an excuse because for us it was about living the moment, it was about the next ball and it was about how we were going to combat the Indian, the Indian players tonight,” he added.

In a recent podcast, former England skipper Michael Vaughan took a dig at Arthur while agreeing with former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist‘s praise for Rohit Sharma.

“Gilly, you are absolutely spot on about Rohit. His tactical awareness out in the middle, just managing the players, as you mentioned [Mohammed] Siraj, giving him an extra over just to give him a boost. But his best move without doubt, the move that won the game and the Pakistan coach alluded to it afterwards, is Rohit obviously said to the DJ, just do not play ‘Dil, Dil, Pakistan’,” said Vaughan in a podcast.

“If you play, Pakistan will win. Do not play that song. Make sure that they don’t hear that inspirational song. That was clever from Rohit. Most captains don’t think about things like that – DJs, music. Rohit is ahead of his time,” he added.

Team India will now be squaring off against New Zealand in their next match on Sunday in Dharamsala.

Former England cricket team skipper Michael Vaughan took to social media to brutally troll Pakistan following their shocking defeat against Afghanistan in the Cricket World Cup 2023 in Chennai on Monday. Pakistan were completely outplayed by Afghanistan who chased down the 284-run target with three batters scoring half-centuries after a brilliant show from spinner Noor Ahmad. Vaughan referred to Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur‘s comments regarding the team’s unofficial anthem ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ not playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad when they were defeated by hosts India on October 14.

“I presume ‘Dil Dil’ Pakistan wasn’t played in Chennai today,” Vaughan posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Earlier, Arthur complained about Pakistan’s lack of support in the ground during the match against India but his comments were criticised heavily by experts and fans alike.

Coming to the match,  Afghanistan put on a superb batting and bowling display to hand Pakistan a stunning eight-wicket defeat in the Cricket World Cup 2023.

Chasing a 283-run target, Afghanistan were lifted by Ibrahim Zadran (87), Rahmat Shah (77 not out) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65) as they scored 286-2 in 49 overs.

Pakistan had made 282-7 in their 50 overs with 74 from skipper Babar Azam and 58 from opener Abdullah Shafique but the total did not prove tough enough for a clinical Afghanistan.

Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, with a 45-ball 48 not out, hit the winning boundary as Afghanistan improved upon their highest ODI chase of 274 against the UAE in Dubai in 2014.

The win is Afghanistan’s first-ever over Pakistan in eight ODIs and came eight days after their shock victory over defending champions England in Delhi.

India’s comprehensive 7-wicket victory over Pakistan in Cricket World Cup 2023 has been the talk of the town since the conclusion of the contest. The result has seen many former Pakistan cricketers raise questions on the ability of Babar Azam‘s men to go the distance in the tournament. India’s victory, on the other hand, earned them many plaudits from fans and experts. However, Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur is confident if his side’s ability to go as far as the final of the tournament. However, former India pacer S Sreesanth isn’t sure Pakistan can ever beat India in an ICC event.

With two wins in their first three matches, Pakistan are still well in the fray for a top 4 finish in the league stage of the campaign. But, as far as beating India is concerned, Sreesanth has his doubts.

“Mickey Arthur said we’ll meet in the final. I don’t think Pakistan can ever beat India in an ICC trophy and or in any other event considering the team they have. Even our C team can beat Pakistan’s main XI. Make an IPL XI of players who are not playing, even they can defeat the Pakistan team,” the pacer told Sportskeeda.

The India vs Pakistan contest was held at te Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The venue is truly the largest cricket stadium in the world, with a capacity of about 132,000 people. Sreesanth made some rather bold statements, saying Pakistan can’t even dream of playing in such big stadiums.

“Pakistan cannot even dream of playing in such a big stadium. We gave them a chance, but if you play like that, you won’t get such changes again,” Sreesanth asserted.

After a morale-shattering defeat against India, Pakistan next face the mighty Australia on October 20. Having lost two of their three matches in the campaign, the Aussies are keen to get some positive results under their belt in their bid for semi-finals qualification.

Former Indian cricket team fast bowler S Sreesanth was not pleased with Pakistan Team Director Mickey Arthur‘s comments regarding the Cricket World Cup 2023 feeling like a “BCCI event” rather than an “ICC event”. Following Pakistan’s disappointing loss against India, Arthur complained about the lack of support for Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and even alluded to a slight advantage for the Indian cricket team. During an interaction with Sportskeeda, Sreesanth said that it feels like a BCCI event whenever India plays and even insisted that Arthur should be shown the movie ’83’ with subtitles.

“Wherever India plays, it never seems like an ICC event is going on. It will always seem like a BCCI event. We should show him [Arthur] the movie 83 with subtitles. Then he can understand where BCCI was and where it is now. The journey is very important. It’s a motivational and inspirational story.”

“BCCI has risen to the top on its own with much difficulty . The administrators and players are very good now. Even if our C team plays in the World Cup, it would be a brilliant team. What will the ICC say? All the revenues and everything… Would Mickey Arthur have said the same thing if the World Cup was being held in England? Even when I played in Durban for two years, I felt I was in India,” he added.

Meanwhile, legendary Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram criticised Arthur for his comments.

In a chat on A-Sports, Akram fumed at Arthur, asking what his plan was for his batters to face the mystery spinner Kuldeep Yadav. For Akram, the comments Arthur made didn’t make any sense.

“Bhaiya hame ye batao aap logo ne kya plan kiya tha? (Brother, tell me what was the plan?) Kuldeep Yadav ko kaese khelna hai? (How did you prepare to play Kuldeep Yadav?) That’s what we want to hear. Not this random stuff. You think you can get away with this. No, you can’t, unfortunately,” he said.

After the India vs Pakistan Cricket World Cup match, which the Babar Azam-led side lost, one comment which has gone viral came from Pakistan Team Director Mickey Arthur. In the much-hyped India vs Pakistan clash at the Cricket World Cup 2023, The hosts dominated both with the bowling and batting against Babar Azam’s side. Batting first, Pakistan were all out for 191 with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav picking two wickets each. India, boosted by brilliant innings from Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer, reached the target easily.

After the match ended, Pakistan Team Director Mickey Arthur gave a unique response. He mentioned that the atmosphere inside the Narendra Modi Stadium did not feel like it was ‘an ICC event’.

Arthur said: “Look, I’d be lying if I said it didn’t. It didn’t seem like an ICC event to be brutally honest. It seemed like a bilateral series; it seemed like a BCCI event. Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has called Mickey Arthur for his comments. “That was totally uncalled for and unprofessional. It was something that was beyond his control and something he should be the last person to be worried about. His job is to motivate players, irrespective of the circumstances. It won’t have a good effect on the team if he makes such statements,” Salman Butt said on his YouTube channel.

Pakistan’s team director Mickey Arthur, under fire over his team’s embarrassing show against India in the Cricket World Cup 2023 match on Saturday, left a few scratching their heads with his comments in the press conference after the match. Arthur’s remark suggesting that the India vs Pakistan clash in Ahmedabad seemed like a BCCI event over ICC as he didn’t hear ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ enough in the stadium didn’t go down well with fans and a few former cricketers. Wasim Akram, a legend of the game, took a swipe at Arthur, suggesting he should be talking more about what Pakistan’s plans for the match were than diverting attention with such comments.

Wasim Akram’s former teammate Moin Khan also echoed his sentiments, saying Arthur is only trying to divert attention. For Moin, the BCCI should be praised for organising the event in a manner in a way that helped them make the most of the ‘home advantage’.

“(He) diverting attention. A lot of people are disheartened and you’re making them emotional. I think he should discuss what is his job as a professional rather than showing a new path. As a coach, he shouldn’t have said that.”

“We should praise them (BCCI or making the most of the home crowd). Hamare yahan event ho so ham bhi isi tarah utilize karen. (If we host such events, we should also utilize them). We should learn from them.”

Former Indian cricket team opener Aakash Chopra was not pleased with Pakistan team director Micky Arthur’s comments regarding the Cricket World Cup 2023 match between the two sides being a “BCCI event” rather than an “ICC event”. Arthur said that the Pakistan cricket team did not enjoy any kind of support at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and even complained about their unofficial team anthem – “Dil Dil Pakistan” – not playing at any point of time. Chopra took a jibe at the statements saying that a song cannot be an excuse as the Babar Azam-led side was defeated comprehensively.

DJ wale babu mera gana baja do…I mean seriously???? Did we hear Sri Lanka complain about the fact that the Hyderabad crowd was chanting ‘Pakistan Jeetega’?? I’ll be genuinely surprised if the DJ at Narendra Modi Stadium played ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ even once today,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Earlier, Arthur expressed his displeasure regarding the organisation of the India vs Pakistan match.

“Look, I’d be lying if I said it didn’t. It didn’t seem like an ICC event to be brutally honest. It seemed like a bilateral series; it seemed like a BCCI event. I didn’t hear ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ coming through the microphones too often tonight.”

Arthur, however, said that the lack of support in the crowd could not be used an excuse for the team’s heavy loss to India.

“So yes, that does play a role, but I’m not going to use that as an excuse because for us it was about living the moment, it was about the next ball and it was about how we were going to combat the Indian, the Indian players tonight,” he added.

‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ is a popular song sung by famous group Vital Signs fronted by late Junaid Jamshed. It is like a second anthem that blares from loudspeakers at all ICC events.

Pakistan were defeated by seven wickets in the much-anticipated clash against India.

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur admits he knows Sri Lanka’s “strengths and weaknesses” inside out having spent two years at the helm of his Asian rivals. Former champions Pakistan and Sri Lanka clash at the World Cup in Hyderabad on Tuesday, allowing Arthur the opportunity to renew his acquaintance with players he helped develop as coach between December 2019 to November 2021. “Yeah, I know their strengths and weaknesses so we will have plans put in place for all of them,” Arthur told AFP.

“They are a dangerous side so we will have to be at our best to beat them.”

Pakistan defeated the Netherlands in a nervy performance by 81 runs in Hyderabad on Friday to open their World Cup campaign.

They overcame a top order failure, recovering from 38-3 before posting a challenging 286 with half centuries from Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan.

They then bowled out the Netherlands for 205 in 41 overs.

“I enjoyed the first win even though it wasn’t a great performance,” admitted Arthur.

“But we did enough to win and when the game was on the line we had players standing up.”

Pakistan are likely to keep the same line-up for Tuesday’s match, handing a lifeline to out of form opener Fakhar Zaman who scored just 12 against the Netherlands.

“I am not worried about his form, he is a good player and is just one innings away from a big score,” said Arthur of the only Pakistan batsman to have made a double century in ODI cricket.

Undone by South Africa’s record-shattering 428-5 in their opening game on Saturday in New Delhi before losing by 102 runs, 1996 champions Sri Lanka will take confidence from their battling reply.

Sri Lanka will also be buoyed by their two wicket win against Pakistan last month that propelled them to the Asia Cup final in Colombo.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka admitted his side has been hampered by the loss of three frontline bowlers.

Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga were ruled out of the tournament completely through injury while Maheesh Theekshana remains with the squad but sidelined with a hamstring injury.

“It was tough to manage things without three key bowlers, but that is part of the game,” said Shanaka after the South Africa match.

“I am happy with the positive intent we showed with the bat and the first ten overs with the ball were good too.”

Kusal Mendis hit a whirlwind 42-ball 76, with eight glorious sixes, while Charith Asalanka (79) and Shanaka (68) frustrated the South African attack before Sri Lanka were dismissed for 326 in 44.5 overs.
