Former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi has made another scathing attack at current Pakistan captain Babar Azam, stating that it is time for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to look at a new captain. In a video that has gone viral on social media, Afridi stated that enough time has been given to Babar as captain, and that now a new captain should be appointed and backed. Afridi stated that Babar has already received a lot more backing than any captain during his own era, but with little success to show for it.

“As far as Babar is concerned, no captain has received such a prolonged opportunity. I’ve captained Pakistan, as has Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq, none of us got such a long chance to captain. As soon as a World Cup would get over, we would be removed from captaincy,” said Afridi.

Recent reports surrounding Pakistan cricket has stated that PCB chairman is unlikely to introduce the ‘major surgery’ that he had earlier promised in order to avoid conflicts with senior players.

Babar has received significant criticism from several former cricketers, experts and fans after Pakistan exited the 2024 T20 World Cup in the group stage. Now, Afridi has pointed out that a new captain should be elected and stuck with.

“Babar Azam has gotten plenty of opportunities: two or three World Cups, two or three Asia Cups. In my opinion, whoever you bring in now should be fully backed,” said Afridi.

“I believe that any decision that is taken should be given a lot of time, be it the captain, coach or system,” said Afridi.

Babar Azam had resigned from captaincy after Pakistan failed to make the semi-finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, new white-ball captain Shaheen Shah Afridi was given only a few months, after which Babar was reinstated by the PCB.

Shaheen Afridi also happens to be Shahid Afridi’s son-in-law, having married his daughter Ansha in 2023.

Shahid Afridi also expressed confusion at the PCB’s decision to sack only Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the selection committee, when the entire committee consists of seven members.

Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has opened up on star batter Virat Kohli‘s form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). The former batter praised Kohli for his strong mentality, especially in crunch games against the best teams in the world. Amid debate over his strike-rate and batting intent in IPL 2024, Misbah threw his weight behind the RCB icon, and explained what makes Kohli a match-winner. Kohli is leading run-getter in this season’s IPL so far, amassing 661 runs at a strike rate of 155.16 from 13 matches.

Despite the IPL 2024 Orange Cap sitting on his head, experts have often criticised Kohli for his batting intent. Even former India captain Sunil Gavaskar questioned his strike-rate after RCB had lost seven of their first eight league matches.

However, Misbah refused to side with the critics as he praise Kohli for putting up outstanding numbers every season.

“Virat Kohli performed well in all the matches, against many teams, and especially against Pakistan. He played such an innings at a crucial stage that he caused a lot of damage to Pakistan. So even in Pakistan’s mind, there is a mentality, there’s a supremacy, and even in Kohli’s mind, he knows that he can perform well against Pakistan. He’s such a player that when the occasion is big, instead of taking pressure, he takes motivation from it. Whenever there was a pressure situation and the team was in a bad situation, I used to feel like I had to do something. And this is a factor in Virat as well, and he is a top-class cricketer. So to play against a team like India, like we did in the Champions Trophy, Pakistan or any team has to get him out early,” Misbah said on ‘Star Sports Press Room’.

The 49-year-old also slammed Kohli’s critics and said that when he is in the middle, the opposition is always under pressure.

“You can talk about strike rates as much as you want, but he’s a player who knows how to win a match and is used to it. If he is at the crease, then there is no situation or position where you are safe,” he added.

With India and Pakistan set to face off in the T20 World Cup next month, Misbah signed off by saying: “Everyone feels the pressure of playing in the India-Pakistan match. Whenever I used to play against India, if the start was good, I was confident and comfortable that I would perform. It’s in the player’s muscle memory and mind that when you perform well, you really have a big impact on the match, and the position you are in during the match also has an influence,” Misbah further explained.

Ball-tracking in action during Pakistan’s review for the wicket of Tabriaz Shamsi.© X (formerly Twitter)

South Africa edged past Pakistan by a one-wicket margin to register a thrilling win over the Babar Azam-led side on Friday. Aiden Markram hit a solid 91 but a late batting collapse from South Africa kept Pakistan alive in the game. It was left to the last pair of Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi to score the final 11 runs. Shamsi survived a close leg-before appeal that went to the umpire’s call off fast bowler Haris Rauf with eight needed. The incident took place on the final ball of the 46th over.

Shamsi was hit on the front pad on the bowling of Rauf. The ground umpire gave it not out and Pakistan reviewed the decision.

Ball tracking revealed that the ball would have clipped the leg stump, which meant the wicket was on the umpire’s call. Shamsi survived as the field umpire had given him not out.

Talking about the Decision Review System (DRS) after the game, former Pakistan captain Moin Khan made serious allegations. While he blamed the umpire for it, Moin added that the clipping shown by the ball-tracker was wrong.

“It was umpire’s mistake. He (Shamsi) should have been given out. At the point of impact, the leg-stump was visible. It was clearly out, and the umpire should’ve raised his finger. It could’ve gone down for referral then. I feel the clipping was shown wrong. The full ball was hitting the leg-stump,” Moin said on A Sports.

Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq also threw light on the issue by appealing for a change in decision-making.

“Umpire’s call is a big issue that needs to be sorted out. If it shows that it’s out, and the umpire has given it not out, then it should be given out. If you have to stay with umpire’s decision, then what’s the point,” said Misbah.

The Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team did not live up to expectations in the recently-concluded Asian Cup 2023. It was a great chance for the 1992 Cricket World Cup champions to prepare for the 2023 edition, but the side were knocked out of the Super 4 stage.  Despite having played in Sri Lanka extensively, where most of the match of the Asia Cup were played, before the continental event, Pakistan could not qualify for the final. They lost to India too in a Super 4 match. The Pakistan Cricket Board conducted a review of the performance recently.

According to a report by Cricket Pakistan, the meeting was presided over by Zaka Ashraf, the chairman of the PCB management committee. Pakistan captain Babar Azam, head coach Grant Bradburn and members of the technical cricket committee Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez were also present. Team director Mickey Arthur and vice-captain Shadab Khan also joined the discussion.

In the meeting, according to the report, “Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez conscientiously highlighted the shortcomings exhibited by the Pakistani team during the Asia Cup and posed several pertinent questions to the management.”

Interestingly, soon after, Hafeez resigned. he announced the decision via a post on X. “I decided to leave Pakistan cricket technical committee. I served as honorary member. I would like to thank Zaka Ashraf sb for giving me this opportunity. I m always available whenever Zaka Ashraf sb need my honest suggestions for Pakistan cricket. My best wishes for Pakistan cricket as always. Pakistan Zindabad,” he posted.

“The philosophy behind this review was to create an atmosphere of open discussion and develop consensus,” PCB chairman of the management committee Zaka Ashraf said in a statement. “The idea is to have everyone on board and debate about performances, identifying the problems and their solutions.” The review meeting was also attended by head coach Mickey Arthur, captain Babar Azam, vice-captain Shadab Khan and former skippers Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez. Dr Sohail Saleem briefed about the players’ injuries and “the way forward for players’ rehabilitation programs,” the PCB said. Pakistan pacers Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf both suffered injuries during their rain-marred clash against India in Colombo, with the former under doubt to play the World Cup. Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com “In a robust analysis, every aspect of recent team performance, player fitness, and future plans came into discussion with a view to bringing improvement to the side,” the release said. “There was an agreement on making a better approach and strategy on players’ workload. The Pakistan Cricket Board on Thursday held a review meeting of their woeful Asia Cup show in the wake of their World Cup squad announcement. All teams must finalise their 15-player squads for the cricket showpiece before the September 28 deadline, with any replacements after this date requiring approval from the ICC.

Chief selector and former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq could not attend the meeting due to a ‘medical emergency’ but shared his inputs with the PCB chief on Thursday.

The other members of the men’s national coaching staff including head coach Grant Bradburn, batting coach Andrew Puttick and bowling coach Morne Morkel “were also invited to report on the team’s recent performance”.

“We have to debate strengths and weaknesses so that we are clear about what and where we need to invest for the betterment of our team,” he added.

Pakistan failed to make the final of the Asia Cup after losing to India and Sri Lanka in the ‘Super Four’. They managed wins only against Nepal and Bangladesh.

In fact, Pakistan, who have won the Asia Cup only twice in 2000 and 2012, suffered their heaviest defeat to arch-rivals India by 228 runs in the ODI format, ahead of their mega clash in the World Cup in Ahmedabad on October 14.

“There was an agreement on making a better approach and strategy on players’ workload. The importance of strengthening the bench was also emphasized,” it added. PTI DDV TAP
