Tabraiz Shamsi was palpably relieved after surviving a close leg before appeal on ‘Umpire’s Call’ as that one major decision as all but brought curtains on Pakistan’s Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign after a one-wicket defeat to South Africa, their fourth on trot in the tournament. Chasing 271, the Proteas were down to the final pair, and Shamsi faced a strong LBW appeal off Haris Rauf’s bowling, which was given not out by the on-field umpire. As a convinced Rauf opted for the review, it was the ‘Umpire’s Call’ that handed Shamsi the much-needed lifeline by the barest of margins, which somewhat proved to be the decisive factor in the encounter.

“When I walked down the wicket, Keshav (Maharaj) told me that it was sliding down the wicket. So, I felt cool about it,” he told reporters after the conquest.

Maharaj, whose calculated approach was lauded by one and all felt that DRS calls can go either way and South Africa as a unit felt same when Rassie van der Dussen got a contentious leg-before decision off Usama Mir’s bowling when there was confusion with regards to Umpire’s Call and what showed on replay.

As the on-field umpire adjudged him out, the review showed a double umpire’s call, which was heart-breaking for the Proteas.

However, Maharaj felt that despite having mixed feelings, the team had to accept what the technology said.

“Obviously, we felt differently. But when the technology says otherwise, we have to accept it.”

Talking about the chase, Shamsi said that since they had time and deliveries left, they believed to get the job done.

Shamsi admitted that Pakistan pacers were getting the old ball to reverse.

“We knew we had a lot of time, so it was just a matter of getting forward and putting the bat in the way. They were always going to come for the stumps, and the ball was reversing.” “I love it (those nervy moments). That’s probably the only four runs that I have scored the whole year, but with those guys running in and bowling quick, I have never seen the ball as clearly as today. For some reason, it didn’t feel like a pressure situation.” One of the talking points of the South African innings was Marco Jansen’s dismissal off Haris, as he gifted his wicket having already hit him for a four and a six in the over.

However, Shamsi clarified that the batters in his squad have the freedom to take the best shot at that moment.

“If he didn’t get out, we wouldn’t be having this question. We give guys the freedom to take the best option that they think is the best at the moment.” “There’s no pressure on any specific guy to do the job. It didn’t come out for him today. Next game, the ball goes for a boundary, and he is still there batting and winning the game for us.” He also expressed satisfaction with his bowling performance, having claimed a 4/60 and Player of the Match award.

“Very happy with that. Obviously, the guys up front are doing a great job. Full credit to them who bowled before me. We are a unit. Today was my day to take the wickets, but they obviously set it up, and it was my job to continue and make it easier for the guys,” he added.

On his part, Maharaj credited the top-order batters for setting up the platform.

“I was just watching the ball, and I felt confident of being in a position where I could just place the ball in the right area. We know Shaheen, the calibre of a pacer he is. It was quite difficult but lucky enough that we got through the period.” “The batters set it up for us. Yes, there were situations where we felt we had to take the risk. But, the bigger picture was that there were 40 balls to go, and a run a ball would have been enough. (With the field placement) we had to fight our temptation (of going for the big hits).” Maharaj was also elated to have a great depth within the squad, saying, “Fortunate enough to have a lot of depth in our squad, especially from the fast bowlers’ perspective, which is encouraging to see.”

Legendary Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram criticised skipper Babar Azam after the team slumped to narrow defeat against South Africa in Cricket World Cup 2023. South Africa lost wickets in a heap after a solid start to the run chase but Pakistan were not able to break the final wicket partnership between Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj. With the pacers completing their entire quota of overs, Babar gave the ball to Mohammad Nawaz but he ended up conceding a crucial boundary that clinched the game for South Africa. While Babar was seen shouting at Nawaz after the match, Akram said that although people will blame the bowler, the responsibility will actually fall on the skipper Babar.

“There were a couple of mistakes at the end. When a team loses then criticism is natural. The last over was given to Nawaz. I know the whole country will attack Nawaz but at that time Usama Mir had two overs left. Who was bowling better at that moment? Usama Mir. Who had more chances of baffling the tail-enders with googlies? Usama. His first three-four overs weren’t good but he got two wickets for you. So Usama should have bowled that over, then Nawaz. Otherwise, the captaincy was fine. he bowled the main bowlers, got wickets. But I didn’t understand why he gave the ball to Nawaz in that over. His confidence was not there. The angle he creates with his release point will always take the ball down the leg side. So that was a massive mistake from our captain,” he said on A Sports.

However, Akram also pointed out the positives that Pakistan can take from the match and he was all praise for Haris Rauf and Mohammad Wasim for their bowling performances.

“They made a game out of it. Haris bowled his heart out. It was good to see Wasim making an impact in this game. He’s got the talent, we all know but he didn’t get consistent chances. Today he was very good. His pace was up, bowled consistently over 140. He got some swing and troubled the South African batters,” he concluded.

Babar Azam lost his cool on Mohammad Nawaz after Pakistan were narrowly defeated by South Africa in Cricket World Cup 2023 on Friday. Pakistan came agonisingly close to clinching the match but the last wicket pair of Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi were able to eke out a memorable win for the Proteas. With the pacers all bowled out, Babar handed the ball to spinner Nawaz and he was not able to take the all-important final wicket. He was slammed for a boundary by Maharaj as Pakistan’s Cricket World Cup dreams were dealt a massive blow. After the match, Babar was caught shouting at Nawaz and the video of their interaction has gone viral on social media.

South Africa survived a late charge from Pakistan to pull off a thrilling one-wicket win and move closer to the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup 2023 on Friday.

Aiden Markram hit a solid 91 and at 206-4 South Africa were well on course to comfortably chase down a 271-run target. However, it was left to the last pair of Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi to score 11 runs while surviving 11 balls.

Shamsi survived a leg-before appeal that went to umpire’s call off fast bowler Haris Rauf with eight needed before Maharaj hit spinner Mohammad Nawaz to the square-leg boundary to pull off the win in 47.2 overs, sparking wild celebrations in his team’s dressing room.

“Really happy, you play enough cricket to know sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it doesn’t,” said Shamsi who finished on four runs.

Maharaj (seven not out) also added 10 runs for the ninth wicket with Lungi Ngidi (four) but Rauf took a stunning catch off his own bowling to send Ngidi back.

The win took South Africa top of the table with 10 points from five wins in six matches. Pakistan, however, have lost four in succession after opening the tournament with back-to-back wins.  They have four points and will need results to fall in their favour if they are to sneak into the semi-finals.

Pakistan cricket team’s fielding has been criticised heavily during the ongoing Cricket World Cup 2023 and they once again suffered a comedy of errors during the match against South Africa on Friday. Temba Bavuma played the ball softly towards mid-on and went for a quick single. The fielder Agha Salman collected the ball but Mohammad Rizwan’s call for him to throw it resulted in a wayward throw towards the bowler’s end. The throw was far away from the stumps and it ended up hitting the bowler Mohammad Nawaz who looked in pain as the commentators were left in splits following the incident.

Left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi grabbed four wickets as South Africa bowled out Pakistan for 270.

The 33-year-old finished with figures of 4-60 while paceman Marco Jansen took 3-43 after Pakistan won the toss and batted, looking for a win to revive their World Cup hopes.

Pakistan have lost three of their five matches while South Africa have four wins and one loss.

Middle-order batter Saud Shakeel scored a fighting run-a-ball 52 and skipper Babar Azam a solid 65-ball 50 while Shadab Khan chipped in with an aggressive 36-ball 43.

Pakistan can take heart from the fact that South Africa collapsed to an upset defeat against the Netherlands while chasing 246 in Dharamsala last week.

Pakistan would have scored fewer runs had Shakeel and Shadab not lifted them with an 84-run stand for the sixth wicket off 71 balls following Azam’s dismissal at 141.

Shadab hit two sixes and three boundaries while Shakeel’s second fifty in the tournament had seven hits to the rope.

It was Jansen who hit Pakistan early with the wickets of openers Abdullah Shafique (nine) and Imam-ul-Haq (12) in the first seven overs.

Azam added 48 runs for the third wicket with Mohammad Rizwan who made 31 with a six and four boundaries.

The skipper added another 43 for the next wicket with Iftikhar Ahmed who scored 21 with a six and a boundary.

Shamsi dismissed Iftikhar caught at long-on and Azam behind the wicket sweeping to derail the innings until Shakeel and Shadab rebuilt.

Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee broke the stand by dismissing Shadab in the 40th over while Shamsi sent back Shakeel and Shaheen Shah Afridi (two).

Pakistan cricket team chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq had a clear reply for a reporter who compared the statistics of Pakistan spinners with that of Kuldeep Yadav during the Cricket World Cup 2023 squad announcement. Pakistan went with Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan as their main spin options and the reporter compared their statistics with Kuldeep following a disappointing show at the Asia Cup 2023. In response, Inzamam said that the statistics were all correct but he could not select Kuldeep for the Pakistan cricket team as he plays for India – a response that left everyone in the room laughing.

“You have come up with some good stats on both bowlers but let me say that I cannot select Kuldeep Yadav…for me that’s an issue as he is from another team,” he told the reporters.

“We have selected Shadab and Nawaz because we wanted continuity. The World Cup squad is planned for years ahead, and cannot be changed abruptly. Shadab and Nawaz have been doing very well for Pakistan for the past two years. They have not been taking wickets in the middle and performing up to their own caliber but they have done so in the past and we have confidence in them,” Inzamam added.

Fast bowler Naseem Shah who suffered an injury during the recently concluded Asia Cup is not part of Pakistan’s Cricket World Cup squad.

But veteran pacer Hasan Ali has made a comeback into the Cricket World Cup squad. Babar Azam will lead the Pakistan cricket team at the Cricket World Cup while Shadab Khan will be his deputy.

Pakistan bowling coach Morne Morkel on Wednesday said injuries to their premier quicks is a big blow ahead of a must-win Asia Cup match but a “fantastic opportunity” for up-and-coming talent. Naseem Shah has been ruled out of the team’s final Super Four match — effective semi-final — against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Thursday. Pakistan Super League star Zaman Khan came in as replacement and walks directly into the team, which was announced on the eve of the key match. Naseem and fellow quick Haris Rauf were injured in the team’s previous Super Four clash of the 50-over tournament, a prelude to the upcoming ODI World Cup.

“A big blow, picking up those little niggles, but in this same sort of thing what a fantastic opportunity for the guys coming in,” Morkel, a former South Africa fast bowler, told reporters.

“After going down against India, it’s a must-win game for us come tomorrow and I’m quite excited to see the new guys stepping in, to see their character, to see how they respond.”

Zaman, 22, flew in from Pakistan and is already a popular name in national cricket after his heroics in this year’s PSL for champions Lahore Qalandars.

“I’m excited just to work with him, cconnect with them and build that relationship and help him develop, because he’s a match winner,” Morkel said of the quick who defended 13 runs of his last over to star in Lahore’s title defence this season.

Shaheen Shah Afridi leads the Pakistan pace attack that rattled India in the Asia Cup group match, which was washed out after just one innings.

But Shaheen and company took a hammering in their last meeting with India, who posted 356-2 in a match played across two days due to rain.

Morkel said the 228-run loss to India has been a good learning experience ahead of the 50-over showpiece event where they will meet their arch-rivals on October 14.

“Those are fantastic learnings for us,” said Morkel, who rated Shaheen as “world-class”.

“The more tough situations we can face leading into the World Cup, that’s brilliant. You know, we’re gonna grow from this and then come back stronger.”

Critics have pointed at Pakistan’s lack of quality spinners, a major drawback on turning Sri Lankan wickets, but Morkel insists the slow bowlers remain ready to perform.

Pakistan made five changes to their team that lost to India with Mohammad Haris, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim and Zaman coming in.

Pakistan XI: Mohammad Haris, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam (capt),  Mohammad Rizwan (wkt), Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan (vice-capt), Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Wasim, Zaman Khan
