After Pakistan’s 13-run defeat to Australia in the second T20I in Sydney on Saturday, captain Mohammad Rizwan emphasised the impact of missed opportunities on the field. Speaking after the match, Rizwan praised his bowlers but acknowledged the critical mistakes that cost his team the game. “The bowlers bowled really well. But if you drop crucial catches, it will cost you the game,” Rizwan stated, underlining the significance of fielding in tight contests.

“We all know the pitch wasn’t easy to bat on. Catches were crucial,” he added.

Rizwan lauded Haris Rauf for his exceptional performance, as the bowler returned impressive figures of 4/22.

“Haris loves Australia because of the pace and bounce,” Rizwan remarked, noting Rauf’s effectiveness in Australian conditions.

Looking ahead to the series decider, Rizwan remained non-committal about potential team changes.

“Not sure about the changes for the third game. We will see what the situation demands,” he concluded.

Pakistan will aim to recover and address their fielding lapses as they prepare for the final T20I against Australia in Hobart.

In the match, Australia, after winning the toss, got off to a flying start with openers Matthew Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk forging a fifty-run partnership in just 3.1 overs. Fraser-McGurk was the first to fall, dismissed by Haris Rauf for 20. Skipper Josh Inglis followed soon after for a duck, also falling to Rauf. Short, who scored 32, was bowled by Abbas Afridi, leaving Australia at 56/3 within six overs.

Marcus Stoinis added 14 before being dismissed by Sufiyan Muqeem, while Glenn Maxwell managed 21 off 20 balls before falling to Muqeem as well. Tim David contributed 18 off 19 balls, including two boundaries, but became Rauf’s third victim. Xavier Bartlett was dismissed for 5, also by Rauf, who finished with outstanding figures of 4/22, the best T20I bowling figures against Australia on Australian soil. Aaron Hardie made a crucial 28 off 23 deliveries before being caught behind off Abbas Afridi. Spencer Johnson was the last wicket to fall, dismissed for a golden duck by Abbas, who ended with 3/17. Australia’s innings concluded at 147 all out.

In reply, Pakistan’s chase got off to a poor start. Star batter Babar Azam managed only 3 before being dismissed by Xavier Bartlett. Sahibzada Farhan followed, falling to Johnson for 5. Johnson then removed captain Mohammad Rizwan, who struggled to 16 off 26 balls. Salman Agha was dismissed for a golden duck by Johnson, leaving Pakistan reeling at 44/4 in 9.3 overs.

Pakistan reached 50 in 10.2 overs and 100 in 14.5 overs, but the middle-order collapse continued. Usman Khan and Irfan Khan offered some resistance with a fifty-run partnership. However, Usman was eventually dismissed by Johnson for a well-made 52 off 38 balls, including four boundaries and one six. Johnson claimed his fifth wicket by dismissing Abbas Ali for 4.

Adam Zampa further dented Pakistan’s chase by dismissing Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, both for ducks. Sufiyan Muqeem was run out without scoring, and Haris Rauf was dismissed for 2 following a sharp throw from Tim David. Pakistan needed 16 runs in the final over but fell short, being bowled out for 134.

Apart from Johnson’s stellar performance, Bartlett chipped in with a wicket, while Zampa impressed with figures of 2/19 in his four overs. Johnson’s five-wicket haul earned him the Player of the Match award.

Australia, now leading the series 2-0, will aim for a clean sweep as they head to Hobart for the final T20I.

Pakistan are likely to field an unchanged playing XI versus Australia in the second One-Day International in Adelaide on Friday. A source close to the team said there had been some discussion on handing debut to left-arm wrist spinner Faisal Akram but the pitch appeared to be more encouraging for pacers. “The likelihood is that Pakistan will field the same eleven that lost the first match by two wickets in Melbourne. The same combination of four pace bowlers, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Muhammad Hasnain and Naseem Shah, who has been cleared to play after a slight strain in the first match forced him off the field,” the source said.

He also said Pakistan would depend on their part-time spinners, Agha Salman, Saim Ayub and Kamran Ghulam, who were not called upon to bowl in the opening ODI, which Australia won with 17 overs to spare.

Openers Abdullah Shafique and Saim Ayub will get another chance to open the innings, with all eyes on star batter Babar Azam, who has been struggling for form. He was dismissed for 37 in Melbourne after a scratchy innings.

“There has been talk about trying out all-rounder Aamer Jamal in place of Mohammad Hasnain, but the team management, including interim head coach Jason Gillispie, feel it would be unfair to drop Hasnain after just one game as he was playing in an international after more than a year,” the source added.

Pakistan playing XI for 2nd ODI: Muhammad Rizwan (c & wk), Agha Salman (vc), Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam, Irfan Khan Niazi, Kamran Ghulam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Muhammad Hasnain and Naseem Shah.

Mohammad Rizwan’s Blunt Take On “King” Tag After Being Named Pakistan Captain https://artifexnews.net/if-i-start-considering-myself-a-king-mohammad-rizwans-honest-stance-on-pakistan-captaincy-6887291/ Mon, 28 Oct 2024 01:43:20 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/if-i-start-considering-myself-a-king-mohammad-rizwans-honest-stance-on-pakistan-captaincy-6887291/ Read More “Mohammad Rizwan’s Blunt Take On “King” Tag After Being Named Pakistan Captain” »

Pakistan’s newly appointed white-ball skipper Mohammad Rizwan on Sunday said that he is here to “serve the 15 men” of the team and not to act like a “king”. Ahead of Pakistan’s limited-overs tours of Australia and Zimbabwe next month, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced star wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan as their new skipper with Salman Ali Agha as vice-captain. Rizwan has replaced Babar Azam. Speaking at the press conference in Lahore, Rizwan said that his side will try their best to show that “there’s no lack of fight” in the team.

“If I start considering myself a king as captain, then everything will fall apart. Rather, as a leader, I am here to serve the 15 men of the team. This is how it should be. Regarding achievements, we have messages and support from everyone in our box, who are asking us only one thing: fight, fight, and fight. They keep sending us this message again and again, and we will try our best, to show the whole nation that there is no lack of fight in us,” Rizwan said.

Rizwan further talked about his responsibilities as the skipper of the side and said that his role would be to carry out tasks, attend presentations, and handle conferences.

“Look, as far as these rumours are concerned, they may have been heard from somewhere, but if I am part of a group, it’s the Pakistan team’s group–our whole group. Now that I am captain, for me, the most important thing is that all fifteen players of Pakistan are captains in their own way. My role as captain is to carry out tasks, attend presentations, and handle conferences. I’m doing these things, and, all of our Pakistan team members are also captains in their own right because, as you can see, everyone is leading in one way or another,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan announced 15-member squads for white-ball series tours to Australia and Zimbabwe starting from November 4 onwards, with star batter Babar Azam being rested from the Zimbabwe tour.

Mohammad Rizwan will be available for both Australia matches and the Zimbabwe ODIs but will not participate in the T20Is.

Pakistan will also have three debutants in their midst – Kamran Ghulam, Omair Bin Yousuf and Sufyan Moqim, while Aamir Jamal, Arafat Minhas, Faisal Akram, Haseebullah, Muhammad Irfan Khan, and Saim Ayub have joined the ODI squad for the first time.

ODI squad for Australia: Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Arafat Minhas, Babar Azam, Faisal Akram, Haris Rauf, Haseebullah (WK), Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Rizwan (WK), Muhammad Irfan Khan, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: Pakistan Chase Down Highest Target In World Cup History To Beat Sri Lanka https://artifexnews.net/pakistan-vs-sri-lanka-pakistan-chase-down-highest-target-in-world-cup-history-to-beat-sri-lanka-4469214/ Tue, 10 Oct 2023 17:31:56 +0000 https://artifexnews.net/pakistan-vs-sri-lanka-pakistan-chase-down-highest-target-in-world-cup-history-to-beat-sri-lanka-4469214/ Read More “Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: Pakistan Chase Down Highest Target In World Cup History To Beat Sri Lanka” »

Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique clubbed centuries as Pakistan chased down the highest target in World Cup history to beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in Hyderabad on Tuesday. The diminutive Rizwan overcame leg cramps to score a 121-ball 131 not out while Shafique hit a 103-ball 113 as Pakistan overhauled their 345-run target in 48.2 overs. The victory gives Pakistan two wins in as many games and a huge boost in confidence ahead of their high-profile clash against India in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

Highest targets chased down in World Cup history:

345 by Pakistan against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad (2023)

328 by Ireland against England in Bengaluru (2011)

322 by Bangladesh against West Indies in Taunton (2019)

319 by Bangladesh against Scotland in Nelson (2015)

313 by Sri Lanka against Zimbabwe in New Plymouth (1992)

Sri Lanka’s imposing total of 344-9 was built around brilliant hundreds from Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama.

Rizwan cracked eight boundaries and three sixes while Shafique’s knock had ten boundaries and three sixes as Pakistan improved on the previous highest World Cup chase of 328 by Ireland against England in Bangalore in 2011.

Rizwan added a match-turning 176 run stand for the third wicket with Shafique and another 95 for the fourth with Saud Shakeel who made a 30-ball 31.

Rizwan and Shafique lifted Pakistan from a disastrous start in which they lost Imam-ul-Haq (12) and skipper Babar Azam (ten) to pacer Dilshan Madushanka.

Haq, who completed 3,000 runs in 67 innings to become the second joint fastest to the milestone, hooked into the hands of the fielder while Azam edged a flick behind the wicket.

Shafique, who replaced out-of-form Fakhar Zaman, justified his selection by reaching his maiden hundred off 97 balls.

Shafique fell in the 34th over to Matheesha Pathirana but Rizwan continued the chase, reaching his third ODI hundred off 97 balls.

He hit the winning single and raised his hands in delight.

When Sri Lanka batted, after winning the toss, Mendis smashed the fastest century for Sri Lanka in a World Cup match with a 77-ball 122, his highest score in ODIs and third century.

– Mendis dropped twice -It was an innings spiced with 14 boundaries and half a dozen sixes, leading the charge for Sri Lanka while Samarawickrama hit an 89-ball 108 for his maiden hundred.

Samarawickrama hit 11 boundaries and two sixes.

Mendis twice escaped dropped catches — Shaheen Shah Afridi dropped him off his own bowling in the fifth over and then Imam-ul-Haq blundered in the next over again off Shaheen on 18.

Mendis completed his 50 off 40 balls with his seventh boundary, lifting Sri Lanka from the early loss of Kusal Perera (nought) in the second over to Hasan Ali.

Mendis put on a 102 with Pathum Nissanka whose 51 came off 61 balls with seven boundaries and a six.

Once Nissanka fell to Shadab Khan, Mendis and Samarawickrama unleashed some superb hitting against Pakistan’s pacers and spinners alike, adding 111 for the third wicket.

They were savage on fast bowler Haris Rauf, hitting him for two sixes and a boundary in the 21st over.

When Shaheen came back for a second spell, Mendis cracked three fours in the 25th over.

Hasan was hoisted by Mendis for a six to allow the batsman his third hundred off 65 balls.

It was his first century in three-and-a-half years but he had made 76 in the opening defeat to South Africa and now has at least five half-centuries in his last seven ODIs.

Previously, Kumar Sangakkara held the Sri Lanka World Cup record with a 70-ball hundred, scored against England in 2015.

Mendis’s previous best was 119 against the West Indies in Hambantota in February 2020.

Mendis hit two sixes off Hasan’s 29th over before he holed out at deep mid-wicket boundary.

Hasan then removed Charith Asalanka for one but Samarawickrama and Dhananjaya de Silva (25) added 65 for the fifth wicket.

Hasan finished as the best bowler with 4-71 while Rauf took 2-64.
