Pakistan vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Day 2 Live Updates: Pakistan have suffered an early blow with Abdullah Shafique getting dismissed by Taskin Ahmed. Earlier, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossian Shanto won the toss and opted to field against Pakistan on Day 2 of the second Test in Rawalpindi. No play was possible on the first day of the match as incessant rain played spoilsport in Rawalpindi. After losing to Bangladesh for the first time in Test cricket, nothing but a dominant win would help Pakistan make amends. (Live Scorecard)

Pakistan (Playing XI): Abdullah Shafique, Saim Ayub, Shan Masood(c), Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan(w), Agha Salman, Khurram Shahzad, Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Ali, Mir Hamza

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin does not shy away from a bold comment when talking cricket, and it was no different as he analysed Pakistan’s recent loss to Bangladesh in the first Test at Rawalpindi. Pakistan fell to a dramatic Day 5 defeat, losing to Bangladesh for the first time ever in Tests. In the game, Pakistan captain Shan Masood had declared the first innings at 448, despite the team having lost only six wickets. On a flat wicket, Bangladesh went on to post a higher total, before the Pakistan batting collapsed in the second innings. Ashwin expressed his bamboozlement.

“Teams don’t surrender on a pitch like this. In first-class cricket, strong teams will bat first and hit big,” said Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel.

“When I saw the highlights of the match, I understood that it was a proper, tiring collapse on the final day. I haven’t seen that for a long time,” Ashwin admitted.

Ashwin expressed his surprise at how the Pakistan batters got out cheaply in the second innings. Ashwin was highly critical of the Pakistan lower order.

“In the end, when Mohammad Rizwan was staging a fight, Naseem Shah played a shot and got out cheaply. I did not understand what happened. There was nothing on the pitch,” Ashwin said.

Rizwan was the star of Pakistan’s batting throughout the match. He was unbeaten on 171 when Pakistan declared in the first innings, but played a battling 51 amidst difficult circumstances in the second innings.

Former South Africa performance analyst Prasanna Raman, known by the moniker ‘PDogg’, who usually joins Ashwin for his videos, did not mince his words in his critique of the Pakistan batting.

“Bangladesh have no mystery spinners or wrist spinners. There is no threat. If you can’t bat for four sessions on a pitch like that at home, it can mean only one thing. Division 1 and Division 2 cricket needs to be brought in. Otherwise, Test cricket in Pakistan will be destroyed,” said Raman.

Pakistan take on Bangladesh again at Rawalpindi in the second Test on August 30.

Senior India batter Virat Kohli moved up two rungs to eighth place while his captain Rohit Sharma dropped a spot to sixth in the latest ICC Test rankings released on Wednesday. Joining Rohit and Kohli in the top 10 is young Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has moved up a spot to seventh. Veteran England batter Joe Root maintained his place as the top ranked Test batter in the world following their success in the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Manchester. But Root’s teammate Harry Brook has made a massive jump on the back of scores of 56 and 32 during that Old Trafford contest.

The 25-year-old has risen three places to fourth overall, leaping past Pakistan’s Babar Azam, Australia’s Steve Smith and Rohit.

Babar has dropped a whopping six places to fall from shared third to ninth following a rare failure in the first innings of Pakistan’s Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.

But teammate Mohammad Rizwan gained seven spots, achieving a new career-high rating by moving inside the top 10 at a shared 10th following his century in the same match.

Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim has achieved a career-high rating as he climbed seven spots to move to 17th.

Seasoned India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin continues to hold the top spot among bowlers while pacer Jasprit Bumrah and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja have maintained their third and seventh spots respectively.

England seamer Chris Woakes, who is up four rungs to 16th, and Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando (up 10 spots to 17th) have gained some ground while Pakistan’s right-arm pacer Naseem Shah (up four spots to 33rd) and England’s Gus Atkinson (up four places to 42nd) have attained career-best ratings following good returns from their recent appearances.

Among all-rounders, Jadeja and Ashwin continue to occupy the top two spots while Axar Patel is ranked sixth.

Known to lose his calm in the middle of the match on occasions, Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasa gave another example of his leaky temprament on Day 5 of the first Test against Pakistan. Shakib, who has caused disruptive scenes on the cricket much multiple times in the past, once again lost his cool as Pakistan wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan took his team to be ready and face a delivery. Upset with Rizwan, who has also been at the center of many time-wasting tactics in the past, an angry Shakib threw ball towards the Pakistan star.

With Bangladesh needing quick wickets in order to win the series opener against Pakistan at Rawalpindi on Sunday, Rizwan was back to his time-wasting antics on the field. An unhappy Shakib, who was bowling the 33rd over of the second innings, threw the ball towards the Bangladesh wicket-keeper, with the ball flying over Rizwan’s head.

The umpire wasn’t happy with Shakib’s act and decided to scold him on the field. Here’s the video:

Bangladesh took a 117-run lead in the first innings, putting pressure on Pakistan to deliver on the 5th day. The visiting bowlers did well by sending 8 Pakisting batters packing for just 118 runs but Rizwan stood tall in the middle, holding one end to keep his team in the fight.

Earlier with the bat, Bangladesh put 565 runs on the board, in reply to Pakistan’s total of 448/6 in the first innings. Mushfiqur Rahim (191), Shadman Islam (93), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (77), Litton Das (56), and Miminul Haque (50) were the top contributors with the bat for Bangladesh as Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to break partnerships at regular intervals.

Pakistan pacer Naseem Shah even criticised the pitch curator and the board for not giving the hosts a wicket where they could make the home advantage count.

Mohammad Rizwan stunned both fans and experts with a brilliant one-handed catch to dismiss Zakir Hasan on Day 3 of the first Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh on Friday. Bangladesh openers Hasan and Shadnam Islam could add just four more runs on Day 3 before Naseem Shah provided the breakthrough for Pakistan. The delivery was pitched on good length just outside the off-stump and Hasan ended up getting a thick outside edge. Rizwan was completely aware behind the stumps and he pulled off an impressive dive on his left to complete the one-handed catch for his team.

Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam hit a fighting half-century on Friday to lead his team to 134-2 at lunch on the third day of the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.

The 29-year-old left-hander was unbeaten 53 with senior batter Mominul Haque 45 not out as the duo defied Pakistan’s pace attack on a Rawalpindi stadium pitch that has slowed down considerably.

The visitors still trail Pakistan’s first innings total of 448-6 by 314 runs with eight wickets intact.

Shadman pulled pacer Naseem Shah’s last delivery before the interval for his sixth boundary to reach a third Test half-century, extending the unbroken third wicket stand with Haque to 81.

The stand led the recovery after Pakistan removed Zakir Hasan (12) and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (16) in the extended three-hour session due to Friday prayers.

Haque has also batted with confidence, having hit four boundaries.

Pakistan employed all four pacers but are missing the services of a frontline spinner.

Part-time slow bowler Agha Salman has made little impact in his eight overs so far.

Resuming at 27-0, Bangladesh lost Zakir to a smart catch by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, diving to his left to take a one-handed catch in Naseem Shah’s fifth over of the day.

Shanto looked good during his short knock but was bowled between bat and pad by Khurram Shahzad, leaving the visitors on 53-2.

Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel knocked brilliant centuries to guide Pakistan to an imposing 448-6 declared before Bangladesh closed the second day on 27-0 in Rawalpindi on Thursday. Rizwan’s unbeaten 171 was his Test best and third century in the format while Shakeel’s 141 was equally polished as the duo lifted Pakistan from a precarious 16-3 on Wednesday. Bangladesh openers Shadman Islam was 12 and Zakir Hasan on 11, negotiating 12 overs of pace without any problem as the Rawalpindi stadium pitch has not assisted bowlers as predicted.

Bangladesh batting coach David Hemp hoped his batters match their opponents.

“It’s a pretty good batting pitch and we hope it continues like this,” said Hemp, a former Bermuda player.

“Our batters need to match Pakistan’s batters and we need to get closer to Pakistan’s total.”

Bangladesh had pushed Pakistan on the backfoot on day one but it was Shakeel who repaired the innings with Saim Ayub (56) through a 98-run fourth wicket stand before another 240 runs were added for the next with Rizwan as Pakistan blunted Bangladesh’s attack.

Rizwan, who hit three sixes and 11 boundaries in a 239-ball knock, added a quick 44 with Shaheen Shah Afridi who smacked two sixes and a boundary in a blistering 29 not out.

That allowed Pakistan to declare their first innings 78-minutes after tea.

Shakeel said it is too early to give a verdict on the pitch.

“The ball was moving early on (Wednesday) but if you look at Bangladesh’s bowling they bowled short of length and had they pitched it up they would have got more success,” said Shakeel.

“Let our bowlers bowl tomorrow then we can have a final say on the pitch.”

Bangladesh failed to get a wicket in the first session as Rizwan and Shakeel batted superbly to help Pakistan reach 256-4 at lunch.

Off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz ended Bangladesh’s frustrating wait for the wicket, luring Shakeel out of the crease as wicketkeeper Litton Das removed the bails, ending a brilliant 261-ball knock.

Shakeel also scored his third Test century and hit nine boundaries.

Shakeel also survived a freakish run out attempt on 138 when he stepped out of his crease while leaving paceman Hasan Mahmud‘s delivery, but made it back as Das hit the stumps.

Agha Salman made 19.

Pacers Hasan Mahmud (2-70) and Shoriful Islam (2-77) were the pick of Bangladesh bowlers, while Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan grabbed a wicket each.

Resuming at 158-4, Shakeel and Rizwan added 98 runs in an extended two-hour and 15-minute morning session after play on the first day was delayed by a wet outfield.

Looking for early wickets, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto used all his bowlers but none could replicate the success achieved on day one.

The two-match series is part of the World Test Championship’s third cycle with Pakistan currently sixth and Bangladesh eighth on the nine-team table.

Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan ran 4 runs© X (Twitter)

In one of the rare instances in Test cricket, Pakistan pair Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan had to run between the wickets to add 4 runs to their total on Day 2 of the first Test against Bangladesh. It was Shakeel who drove a ball towards mid-off on the bowling of Nahid Rana. Shoriful Aslam, placed at mid-off, managed to get his hand on the ball, hence reducing the speed. Though his fielding prevented the ball from touching the boundary rope, the Pakistani duo still managed to run between the wickets and complete four runs.

The ball stopped near the long-off boundary after hitting Sharful’s hand, prompting Najmul Hossain Shanto to hunt it down. Shanto had to run from the mid-on region all the way to the boundary down the ground to pick up the ball, hence giving the batters ample time to run four.

The non-striker Mohammad Rizwan seemed to be quite tired at the end of the act, and threw his gloves and bat on the ground to let himself catch his breath. Here’s the video:

Pakistan started well on Day 2 after losing 4 wickets on Day 1. The likes of Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood, and Babar Azam departed before even getting into double digits. Saim Ayub was dismissed on 57 runs before Shakeel and Rizwan also scored their respective half-centuries.

The new-ball pairing of Shoriful Islam (2-30) and Mahmud (2-33) jolted Pakistan after a delayed start of 230 minutes due to a wet outfield after overnight rain.

Shoriful removed the home team’s skipper Shan Masood for six and then star batter Babar Azam for a two-ball duck before Pakistan launched their recovery on a greenish pitch.

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto wasted no time in sending Pakistan in to bat after winning the toss and had them on 81-3 at tea.

Mahmud gave the visitors the first breakthrough when Abdullah Shafique was smartly caught at gully by Zakir Hasan for two in the fourth over.

Shoriful then had Masood caught behind off a sharp delivery, with Bangladesh successfully reviewing a not out decision by South African umpire Adrian Holdstock.

Azam nicked a leg-side delivery in Shoriful’s next over and was caught by wicketkeeper Liton Das for his first home-ground duck in 14 Tests.

Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam got off to the worst possible start to the Bangladesh Test series, as he got out for a two-ball duck on Day 1 of the first Test in Rawalpindi. Coming in to bat at no. 4 after the dismissal of captain Shan Masood, Babar soon followed suit. Babar edged a delivery by Shoriful Islam, which was grabbed behind the stumps by a diving Litton Das. While it was Babar’s eighth duck in Test cricket, he also brought up an unwanted first.

The duck was Babar’s first in a Test cricket match on home soil. It continues a poor run of form for Babar, who averages under 40 (37.41) in his last nine Tests.

Babar need not worry about the record of most ducks by a Pakistani batter, as his eight is still well short of Danish Kaneria‘s 25.

Despite the failure, Babar continues to be the only batter in the world to be ranked in the top five in all three formats. He is currently ranked third in Tests, behind Joe Root and Kane Williamson.

Pakistan’s rebuild after early scare

Despite tottering at 16/3 after Babar’s dismissal, Pakistan managed to fight back on a day where rain delayed the start of the contest. Pakistan lost just one more wicket after that, ending Day 1 on 158/4.

Young left-handed Saim Ayub, playing only his second Test, proved the hype around him as he scored a gritty 56 off 98 balls. Ayub was ably supported by Saud Shakeel, who ended the day unbeaten on 57. Shakeel was accompanied by wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan at stumps, who’d notched up 24 in only 31 balls.

Pacers Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud both picked up two wickets each for Bangladesh, but they would be ruing not capitalizing on their brilliant start. Bangladesh are chasing their first-ever win against Pakistan in Test cricket, having a 0-1-12 record till date.

Pakistan’s star trio Babar Azam, Mohammed Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi, are unlikely to get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for featuring in the upcoming Global T20 Canada, sources told Geo News. The sources informed Geo News that the players won’t get an NOC despite the league schedule, avoiding any clashes with Pakistan’s international fixtures. Pakistan will play the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, which will kick off on August 21. The Canadian League will be played from July 25 to August 11.

It was also reported that the reason for the likely denial of the NOC is that players playing in all formats will not be issued the certificate according to the policy. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is not in favour of issuing NOCs to players because of the hectic schedule that lies ahead of them.

Star pacer Naseem Shah was also denied an NOC last week to feature in The Hundred. The sources informed Geo News that, after reviewing the application submitted by the Pakistan cricketer, the decision to deny the NOC has been taken as a preventive measure.

The sources stated that Naseem’s application has been dismissed to safeguard him from injuries since the youngster features in all three formats for Pakistan and suffered injuries and fitness challenges last year.

Apart from the star trio, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Nawaz, Asif Ali, and Iftikhar Ahmed also have Global T20 Canada contracts.

Earlier this week, PCB chairman Naqvi stated that the players would get the NOC based on certain criteria. Players who fulfil the criteria will get the NOC.

“The players will be promoted on the basis of their fitness and performance. There’s no place for players who do not fit the criteria. There’ll also be no compromise on discipline,” said PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi.

In their crucial World Test Championship matches against Bangladesh, Pakistan red-ball head coach Jason Gillispie has already hinted at the possible unavailability of star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi for the series.

Shaheen and his wife, Ansha, who got married last year, are expecting the birth of their first child. Due to this, he could miss the Test series against Bangladesh next month.

“Shaheen can miss Bangladesh Test matches due to childbirth. We can give him [some] rest if he wants to stay with his wife till then,” Pakistan’s red-ball coach, Jason Gillispie, said last week.

Pakistan Test coach Jason Gillespie highlighted the importance of fitness in the team ahead of their two-match red-ball series against Bangladesh in August. In the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan crashed out of the group stage and received massive backlash from former Pakistan cricketers and some sections of fans. Fielding and inconsistency were the two aspects of the Pakistan team that were heavily criticised. Apart from that, the fitness level of the players also turned out to be another point of backlash for the players.

Some sections of fans, along with former Pakistan cricketers including Wasim Akram, Kamran Akmal and many more stars, have been critical of the players’ fitness.

Gillespie is looking to improve the fitness level within the team and said, as quoted from Geo News, “In international cricket, you have to remain fit, there are no questions on that. In international cricket, everyone should know about the importance of fitness. It is the main component of a sportsman.”

After Babar Azam was reinstated as the white ball captain in place of Shaheen Afridi, Shan Masood is expected to lead the side in the two-match Test series.

Gillespie disclosed that he has had conversations with the Test skipper and will hold talks with the players about the brand of cricket that they want to play.

“I have talked to Shan Masood [Pakistan’s red-ball capain] one or two times, I’m hoping we will play positive cricket. I will [also] discuss with the players about what brand of cricket they want to play, the team will be selected while taking the opposition and conditions in mind,” he said.

“If a player is good for the team, he will definitely be selected. I’m in contact with Gary Kirsten [Pakistan’s white-ball coach] for players’ workload management,” he added.

The former Australian pacer asserted that his focus is on red-ball cricket and he has had conversations with previous coaches as he aims to improve the team.

“My focus is red-ball cricket. I will also travel to Australia and watch their players. I have talked with Jeff Lawson and Shaun Tait [Pakistan’s former bowling coach] on the Pakistan cricket team,” Gillespie said.

Pakistan’s Test series against Bangladesh will begin on August 21 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The second Test will be played on August 30 at National Stadium Karachi.
